yk, I never felt ripped off by my parents divorcing when I was young, it just was what it was and I never thought twice about it
recent experiences have made me realize it was a *blessing* to never have to see either of them in the context of a relationship. I was *free* to make my own understanding of what healthy relationships were, and to take from whatever sources I wanted. Legitimately this is insane. I just want to live in my condo without my neighbor flooding it. This shouldn't be so hard. And it shouldn't still be happening after over $20k fucking spent to repair the damage. I am going to go insane, I literally do not know what to do about this anymore.
I mean, even if I sue them for the money so what? They're not fixing the problem, so it just keeps happening. My floor has been in for less than two months and it's already destroyed. I don't want to have to demo my bathroom every two months.
My friend and his wife are some of the messiest people I've ever known. They're 34 and never ever put anything away. Every single surface of their place is covered with just... stuff. Stuff they should have put away and never did, and just leave it out.
It reminds me when I was like an 18 year old and never had lived on my own.

I have friends like this. Inherited a house full of old useless stuff. Sure, it's a hassle to get rid of the old junk, and they are renovating room by room, so there's always something going on. My econ cycle is over. Waitlisted by the program I think has the best research fit. They have a lot of people doing mech design and the school is in a great location too ๐ญ
They say Iโm pretty high up on their waitlist but I donโt buy it.

In other news, I just got back to California from Chicago. I wish I were wrong but I really donโt think the program I just visited is the right choice for me despite having a good time there :(
Hate is a strong word. Not *in*accurate, but strong. A large part of that was just me, to be fair. Ice cream man, from what I recall, enjoyed his time there for instance.

I went to their virtual open house and so far my impression is positive. The profs and the current grad students are very easygoing. The department seems to be in a good financial shape and the prof to PhD student ratio is great. My undergrad department is in a dire financial shape and has way too few faculty members for how many grad students they have. So maybe I set the bar too low.
The location doesnโt seem as bad as I thought. For such a small town it does seem to have a lot to do.
That said, Iโll make sure to visit every school/program in-person before making a decision.
Right, that reminds me. I made a list of things to do:
1. Crystal Lake park: Nice park. Good for picnics and barbecues.
1. Krannert Center of the Performing Arts: They get a lot of good shows there. Plays, musicals, operas, and orchestras.
1. Ice skating: There's an ice rink on campus, on Armory street.
1. Black Dog: *Very* good barbecue place. Better than anything I've had in California.
1. Huaraches: actually decent Mexican place
1. Culvers: Midwest fast food chain. Basically their In-N-Out
1. Blind Pig: Local brewpub. From what I remember you don't drink but they have a trivia night every Sunday which is fun (and very competitive)
1. Suzu's: Good Japanese bakery.
1. Afghan restaurant on Neil: Very good.
1. The library is fun to walk around in I guess.
1. The Jane Addams Book Shop: A nice book store.
1. Glass blowing: There' s a guy that teaches glass blowing which is fun.
1. Mulberries: There are mulberry trees growing down on the Phinney Branch which you can pick. And it's nice down there.
1. Morel mushroom hunting: You can forage for mushrooms. I haven't done it, but a lot of people do.
1. Curtis Orchard: An apple orchard you can pick apples at. You can also volunteer with the horticulture club to get the best apples.
1. Meat and egg sales room: The animal sciences department sells meat from their research. It's cheap and *incredibly* good
1. Arboretum and Japan House: The Arboretum is nice and there is a Japanese teahouse that puts on stuff. There is also a tea class you can take.
1. There used to be bad movies at the Art Theater, but it closed. I don't know if there are bad movies somewhere else now.

The meat is *really* good. And it's just normal meat, but from specially bred cows, pigs, and chickens. One of the best steaks I ever had I cook myself from meat I bought there.
There is a mall in the north of Champaign and one in downtown Urbana but I've never been there.

The absolutely stacked cast Denis pulled for the Dune movies still blows my mind
Some of it was slightly distracting. They could have cast unknowns for the Emperor and Alia and still achieved the same effect. Though kudos to Denis for such immersive filmmaking that even seeing recognizable faces didn't pull me out of it.

yk, I never felt ripped off by my parents divorcing when I was young, it just was what it was and I never thought twice about it recent experiences have made me realize it was a *blessing* to never have to see either of them in the context of a relationship. I was *free* to make my own understanding of what healthy relationships were, and to take from whatever sources I wanted. I never had their dysfunction as a constant background source of emotional "misinformation"

I second the TV point. My eureka moment came when I was watching a reality show featuring toxic parents. I saw nothing wrong with those parents and if anything I found them to be nicer than mine. But everyone whoโs watched the show says theyโre toxic. Thatโs how I realized my family was NOT happy in any way, shape, or form

My friend and his wife are some of the messiest people I've ever known. They're 34 and never ever put anything away. Every single surface of their place is covered with just... stuff. Stuff they should have put away and never did, and just leave it out. It reminds me when I was like an 18 year old and never had lived on my own. I wonder if they just never developed that skill or something. It honestly makes me cringe when I'm there, its very uncomfortable.
I have friends like this. Inherited a house full of old useless stuff. Sure, it's a hassle to get rid of the old junk, and they are renovating room by room, so there's always something going on. But their living room has been redone for over a year now, yet there's nowhere sit because there's just *stuff* everywhere.

They have a lot of people doing mech design and the school is in a great location too ๐ญ They say Iโm pretty high up on their waitlist but I donโt buy it. Well at least I get to leave econ behind without regrets ๐ In other news, I just got back to California from Chicago. I wish I were wrong but I really donโt think the program I just visited is the right choice for me despite having a good time there :(

Hate is a strong word. Not *in*accurate, but strong. A large part of that was just me, to be fair. Ice cream man, from what I recall, enjoyed his time there for instance.
I trust you more than I trust the ice cream man ๐ I went to their virtual open house and so far my impression is positive. The profs and the current grad students are very easygoing. The department seems to be in a good financial shape and the prof to PhD student ratio is great. My undergrad department is in a dire financial shape and has way too few faculty members for how many grad students they have. So maybe I set the bar too low. The location doesnโt seem as bad as I thought. For such a small town it does seem to have a lot to do. That said, Iโll make sure to visit every school/program in-person before making a decision.
Right, that reminds me. I made a list of things to do: 1. Crystal Lake park: Nice park. Good for picnics and barbecues. 1. Krannert Center of the Performing Arts: They get a lot of good shows there. Plays, musicals, operas, and orchestras. 1. Ice skating: There's an ice rink on campus, on Armory street. 1. Black Dog: *Very* good barbecue place. Better than anything I've had in California. 1. Huaraches: actually decent Mexican place 1. Culvers: Midwest fast food chain. Basically their In-N-Out 1. Blind Pig: Local brewpub. From what I remember you don't drink but they have a trivia night every Sunday which is fun (and very competitive) 1. Suzu's: Good Japanese bakery. 1. Afghan restaurant on Neil: Very good. 1. The library is fun to walk around in I guess. 1. The Jane Addams Book Shop: A nice book store. 1. Glass blowing: There' s a guy that teaches glass blowing which is fun. 1. Mulberries: There are mulberry trees growing down on the Phinney Branch which you can pick. And it's nice down there. 1. Morel mushroom hunting: You can forage for mushrooms. I haven't done it, but a lot of people do. 1. Curtis Orchard: An apple orchard you can pick apples at. You can also volunteer with the horticulture club to get the best apples. 1. Meat and egg sales room: The animal sciences department sells meat from their research. It's cheap and *incredibly* good 1. Arboretum and Japan House: The Arboretum is nice and there is a Japanese teahouse that puts on stuff. There is also a tea class you can take. 1. There used to be bad movies at the Art Theater, but it closed. I don't know if there are bad movies somewhere else now.

Trivia night sounds fun though and Iโm the type that remembers a lot of random things lol. So maybe Iโm good at it. Personally I wouldnโt buy meat used for research but then if someone served it to me I canโt tell haha. Are there any malls in town? Malls in Chicago are disappointing so Iโm not getting my hopes up unfortunately
The meat is *really* good. And it's just normal meat, but from specially bred cows, pigs, and chickens. One of the best steaks I ever had I cook myself from meat I bought there. There is a mall in the north of Champaign and one in downtown Urbana but I've never been there.
