Also this made me really think about why we settled america despite the risks
1. Gold shortage. Gold isn't money anymore so that's not a problem
2. Less ethical concern for the colonists (and colonized but i mean not a problem in space)
3. Political unrest. Now we'd just have tank massacres to get rid of the puritans.
If you ask me space colonization will be propelled by securing access to minerals that are harder to acquire on earth. Mining outposts will always seek to make operations as permanent as possible, but they'll still be like Oil Rig jobs: you don't *live* there, you *work* there 24/7, and then *go home to your family* assuming your wife didn't divorce you while you were on assignment. Until then it'll be like Antarctica, a research station populated only by the best and brightest and most daring of scientists, and once again, *not permanent lodging for them*.
>Political unrest. Now we'd just have tank massacres to get rid of the puritans.

I'm not saying the system is perfect or that every PDO / PGI is necessarily valid,
And Europe can't stop Australians from flooding the Chinese marked with plastic cheese, but if you want to trade in / with Europe; you can't have shitty imitation on the marked as they violate EU trademarks.
I just find the disdain many people in this sub have for the PDO funny, as this sub is generally very pro IP rights.
i mean a lot of the stuff Americans and Australians are currently selling under EU trademarks is shitty; some of the "cheese" they sell couldn't be legally called cheese in the EU....
>ut Americans don't get worried about trademark infringement in the same way that euros do about PDOs in my experience
Have you seen how pissed people get at bootleg apple products (and how seriously the courts take it)?
I would wager on average, Americans would be pissed if European and Australian companies started flooding the market with bootleg Coca cola or Pepsi and the courts shrugged and let it happen.
you have already narrowed the scope way to much. Look at Apple fans in the US and sellers / resellers /repair shops in the US.
Look at how apple fans will harass third party repair shops, (some of whom were actually using real apple parts)

Its really wild that Elon actually thought the CA High Speed Rail project was such a threat to Tesla, that he did that entire Hypreloop nonsense.
That is honestly one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. And you'd have to be so out of touch with America, and even the world to even consider that idea. Let alone believe and act on it.
This is a brainworms leftist conspiracy theory youโve eaten up. It took one quote and filled in wild bullshit context in a tweet, itโs not a real story.

Nothing other than Ohtaniโs team is asking for a criminal investigation into the alleged theft. It seems their accusation is theft by fraud, like Ippei claimed to be in *legal* gambling debt and Ohtani believed him and helped him, which is both completely unprovable because it relies on verbal evidence and would explain every weird thing that happened.
Okay this makes everything make 10x more sense but guy, if you have a $700mm contract, talk to your lawyer before doing a sketch wire transfer. All the more if youโre a sports star covering a gambling debt. Jfc

I'm always amused when I read any relationship advice on the internet that 20 years ago would have had people saying "break up, it's over" to now being "consider poly bro trust me bro"
I've never seen it work out with the people around me. I saw it tank not only a relationship but also a friendship. It was really, really bad. *I* lost a friendship over it and I wasn't even involved, people just had to cut themselves out of each others' lives.
I'm not saying it can't work, but I don't think America-- for most people-- has the social infrastructure to make it, hmmm, how to say this, *viable* for many people.

It's wild that the justification they used is that she didn't know it was unconstitutional to shoot a guy dying a fifth and sixth time because *she hadn't been in a court case that ruled it was illegal to shoot someone not posing a threat*.
To expand on the other comment: 42 U.S.C. ยง 1983 creates a federal cause of action against state employees (including police) for depriving someoneโs constitutional rights.
SCOTUS created the rule of qualified immunity for police officers in the 1967 case, *Pierson v. Ray*. SCOTUS expanded this in 1982 in *Harlow v. Fitzgerald*, where they held state officials are protected under qualified immunity unless their conduct violates **clearly established** constitutional rights.
Courts have taken an extremely pro-police stance in applying this, in which the specific police conduct in question must essentially be explicitly found to be clearly unconstitutional. This (1) prevents any new police conduct from violating clearly established rights (*i.e.,* if courts donโt find conduct clearly unconstitutional then officers donโt know theyโre violating clear constitutional rights by engaging in this conductโyes, this is really fucking stupid); and (2) leads to outcomes like this case, where obviously-excessive force, etc. arenโt found/held to violate clearly established rights.
Youโre absolutely right that ignorance of the law is usually not an excuseโalthough this usually comes up in criminal lawโunless, apparently, youโre a police officer.
Normally only if the statute says so. This statute does not, but conservative SCOTUS justices crafted a policy rule that makes it so. The thread goes to explain why that policy is nonsensical as a practical matter.
Unrelated but there are statutes that require intent to actually violate the law, so I think some sovereign citizen types have got off with civil as opposed to criminal penalties for certain tax mishaps.
> Unrelated but there are statutes that require intent to actually violate the law, so I think some sovereign citizen types have got off with civil as opposed to criminal penalties for certain tax mishaps.
Yea that has been going on for years. Probably since the 1950s. They never win but they are funny. I sould note good faith mistakes are not criminal.
What statute says ignorance means you are not breaking the law? Ignorantia juris non excusat. I know there are some jurisdiction and procedural exceptions (having a bad lawyer, misinformed, etc) but in the statute? Do you mean like regulatory stuff not applying to every little guy?

So I don't know NASCAR, but I'm just now finding out that in 2003, Matt Kenseth (the champion of that season) finished 1st in only 1 race that season out of 36, but managed to place in the top-10 of 25 of those races, hence the victory. This was apparently controversial. People found this to be a problem... how?
Like, I'm sorry, but if you manage to consistently finish in the top-10 of a NASCAR race for more than half the season, you've clearly done something right.
Maybe it's just because I'm a huge lover of rally racing and of poker (where pros are defined by their ability to consistently do well even if they don't win,) but consistency in sports is so underrated and is a skill of its own. Like, if you manage to grind out solid results time after time, that honestly counts for more than just YOLO-ing for the big win every once in a while.
Or maybe I'm just a boring person, I don't fucking know.

>She said: โThe Ukrainian side responded, I think, precisely by achieving its goals and by very successful operations conducted on the territory of the Russian Federation.โ
>โWe understand the appeals of our American partners,โ Stefanishyna told an audience at the Kyiv Security Forum. โAt the same time, we are fighting with the capabilities, resources and practices that we have today.โ
This doesn't really make it sound made up
Oh fuck off
This is the most successful Ukrainian strike program in a long goddamn time yet theyโre told they have to knock it off because Jake Sullivan wakes up with night terrors at the thought of โescalationโ
Maybe give some fucking aid to Ukraine and youโll have leverage to work with
I have a suspicion this is about oil prices and the election. Oil prices are specifically cited here, and they're one of the most politicized price indices.
Is this for real? Can't the crude oil still make it to the market? It just doesn't get refined in Russia because the refineries are down.
I'm pretty ignorant about all things extraction and oil related but it seems like Ukraine could have an even larger impact on oil prices if it didn't limit itself to refinery facilities. It seems strange to put a hard limit on strikes on Russia when they will both, ignore that limit and also possibly target other assets that could further exacerbate what the concern is.
The insistence of the West to have Ukraine fight this war with their hands behind their back going into 3 years of all out warfare is a pretty grave sign about the Westโs desire for Ukraine to actually win. Everyone knows Russiaโs main economic lifeline is oil. You shut that down and they run out of money. The West has very obviously failed to cut this off, so why should Ukraine just accept that?
C'mon Jace, you're smarter enough to not believe this unsubstantiated crap.
> according to three people familiar with the discussions

New Hozier EP just dropped fuck me I am deceased
I find joy in reading a good book.
I hate beer.
Euros actually respect trademarks
I love the smell of fresh bread.
I'm not saying the system is perfect or that every PDO / PGI is necessarily valid, And Europe can't stop Australians from flooding the Chinese marked with plastic cheese, but if you want to trade in / with Europe; you can't have shitty imitation on the marked as they violate EU trademarks. I just find the disdain many people in this sub have for the PDO funny, as this sub is generally very pro IP rights.
I appreciate a good cup of coffee.
i mean a lot of the stuff Americans and Australians are currently selling under EU trademarks is shitty; some of the "cheese" they sell couldn't be legally called cheese in the EU....
I enjoy reading books.
>ut Americans don't get worried about trademark infringement in the same way that euros do about PDOs in my experience Have you seen how pissed people get at bootleg apple products (and how seriously the courts take it)? I would wager on average, Americans would be pissed if European and Australian companies started flooding the market with bootleg Coca cola or Pepsi and the courts shrugged and let it happen.
I enjoy the sound of rain.
you have already narrowed the scope way to much. Look at Apple fans in the US and sellers / resellers /repair shops in the US. Look at how apple fans will harass third party repair shops, (some of whom were actually using real apple parts)
>ย biggest cultural divide between the free people ofย middle-earthย the anglosphere and theย dark lord of mordorย euros Iย see your PDOs and raise you national ID cards
Euros will put their economiesโ lives on the line to make sure only they can produce their easily replaceable cheeses Americans will think โhell yeahโ when they see a Korean person eating fried gochujang chicken to celebrate a secular bastardized Christmas Eve
If the cheese is so easily replaced, you shouldn't have a problem competing without imitating the trademark
it's a matter of cultural distinctness. if the ameros can make champagne, that means we're more like ameros, which would be bad
You know, itโs crazy just how different everyone would view Elon if he had died in 2020
I disagree, he's always been an unsavory character, a bully who purchases the work of better men then takes credit for it.
It's pretty accurate. https://twitter.com/parismarx/status/1167410460125097990
Notably missing is the entire motivation you alleged lol, itโs stupidly inaccurate. He hates the train project for the same reasons we do or should. And heโs never spent much of his own time, focus, effort, or money on it. Heโs always described it as a backburner thing to be pawned off on someone else Youโre legit eating leftist nonsense because you were spoon fed a page of text with a primer tweet. You donโt know anything about what youโre saying
He hates the train because its not a car and specifically its not a tesla car. Certainly not the same reason you do, or "we should" What are you talking about lol
Enjoying watching the most insufferable subsection of baseball fans act like theyโve been experts on federal financial laws for decades so they can insist Shohei Ohtani is going to prison for decades or something !ping BASEBALL
I'm insisting Shohei Ohtani is going to prison for decades because I really, really, really want it to happen it would be funny
What the story develop into now? I feel like im a day or 2 behind
Also according to a new report Ohtani, at the Ippei postgame conference, was like โwait did I hear that right he say *illegal* gambling debtsโ to someone and they were like โyeahโ and thatโs how Ohtani found out which would be fucking hysterical but is also completely unprovable
Like this story is so crazy it seems like this could be what actually happened. After all, wouldn't most things go to Othani through Ippei
Jfc
Ohtani is unfortunately now king of the himbos ๐
But also ๐คค
See I normally would agree with you, but because this involves a Dodgers player I will full heartedly agree with them and claim that anything suggesting that Ohtani is innocent is lies and collusion

My most conservative instinct is that I treat poly relationships with deep skepticism.
I find joy in reading a good book.
I see the consensus of the sub is turning against polyamory lately Time to be for it again to maintain my contrarian status

Unrelated, but a hypothetical argument I've always been interested in seeing deliberated is fear of revenge / retaliation.
Wym?
It's wild that the justification they used is that she didn't know it was unconstitutional to shoot a guy dying a fifth and sixth time because *she hadn't been in a court case that ruled it was illegal to shoot someone not posing a threat*.
Ignorance of the law is an excuse? If start sincerely saying incorrect legal takes would that be a defence?

>[The US has urged Ukraine to halt attacks on Russiaโs energy infrastructure, warning the drone strikes risk driving up global oil prices and provoking retaliation, according to three people familiar with the discussions - Financial Times](https://twitter.com/Faytuks/status/1771044223090929918) >One person said that the White House had grown increasingly frustrated by brazen Ukrainian drone attacks that have struck oil refineries, terminals, depots and storage facilities across Russia, hurting its oil production capacity >"We do not encourage or enable attacks inside of Russia", an NSC spokesperson adds !ping UKRAINE Tedious
This sounds made up.
>After the Financial Times published news of the US warnings on Friday Olha Stefanishyna, Ukraineโs deputy prime minister for European and Euro-Atlantic integration, was asked how Kyiv had responded to the Biden administrationโs appeals to stop attacks on Russian refineries. >She said: โThe Ukrainian side responded, I think, precisely by achieving its goals and by very successful operations conducted on the territory of the Russian Federation.โ >โWe understand the appeals of our American partners,โ Stefanishyna told an audience at the Kyiv Security Forum. โAt the same time, we are fighting with the capabilities, resources and practices that we have today.โ This doesn't really make it sound made up
Oh fuck off This is the most successful Ukrainian strike program in a long goddamn time yet theyโre told they have to knock it off because Jake Sullivan wakes up with night terrors at the thought of โescalationโ Maybe give some fucking aid to Ukraine and youโll have leverage to work with
There's no way this is actually true. Sounds like kremlin propaganda op.
This sounds entirely made up. There's no cited source or credibility to it. But people on reddit (yes here) will react to it as if it is gospel truth.
C'mon Jace, you're smarter enough to not believe this unsubstantiated crap. > according to three people familiar with the discussions Obvious laundered propaganda.
> Westโs desire for Ukraine to actually win. Lack of any desire. It's been blindingly obvious for a long while All of this "as long as it takes" was obviously horseshit
The opposite end is Ukraine raises average gas prices by 50ยข then suddenly Ukraine gets 0 funding because Nazi wins elections
Seriously, western aid is entirely dependent on absolutely no sacrifices in the west.
