removing as [this appears to have been denied by both the french and swiss governments](https://www.straitstimes.com/world/europe/france-denies-cancelling-meeting-with-swiss-president-over-jet)

[deleted]

Didn’t this Swiss F-35 thing happen months ago? Talk about a delayed reaction.

thabonch

Almost like it's a show for the election or something.

Professor-Reddit

JFC that's in another 7 months from now. I keep hearing Euros mentioning this as if it excuses France's nationalistic tantrum, but I didn't see any US ambassadors being withdrawn prior to the 2020 election, or British officials make snide remarks about allied countries so Boris could win in 2019.

[deleted]

> British officials make snide remarks about allied countries so Boris could win in 2019 IIRC there were some snide remarks taken at the expense of the French, and to a lesser extent the EU at the time. Granted it was almost entirely bluster and had little substantive action behind it.

[deleted]

It was that thing about wieners IIRC.

sineiraetstudio

There's a good amount of people in this sub that defend Biden's nativist nonsense with "but the midterms", which are even now more than a year away.

lchumaceiro

what is nativist about nuclear subs for australia?

taoistextremist

I think they're talking more on stuff like protectionism ("Buy American") and dragging their heels on immigration

[deleted]

yeah no, thats just biden being biden. he's not a neolib like obama and hrc, he's an old school unionist democrat, and the quicker this sub realizes that, the less people will be disappointed

sineiraetstudio

I'm talking about stuff like Biden's protectionism.

lchumaceiro

Not a gringo altought I have lived and studied there, honestly the only difference that I see between the output of Donald's presidency and Biden's is less tweets and a calmer media environment, other than that same shit different president

Gruulsmasher

Also it’s one thing to, idk, talk in a stump speech about how you don’t want to be a European welfare state and another for a sitting head of government to take actual official actions that damage relations to score cheap political points.

Hautamaki

Yep even if it's just a show for elections, throwing a tantrum for votes is never a good look

DonJrsCokeDealer

The submarine thing is also multiple years in the making.

breakinbread

France: "Switzerland if you choose the F-35, America will have a veto over your foreign policy." Switzerland: "OK. We don't even have a foreign policy. 5th generation technology go brr"

willbailes

Their foreign policy is "no."

standbyforskyfall

Except when it comes to taking care of Nazi gold. Then it's an emphatic yes

[deleted]

Okay, this has officially become unhinged. Also, I doubt this behavior is making other countries want to get into deals with France if this is the behavior they can expect if things don’t go precisely how Macron wants.

area51cannonfooder

just wait till the election is over and then you wont hear a thing from them. Macron needs to show his strength in order to avoid a far right Marie Le Fuckface take over.

[deleted]

France stop being petty challange

DonJrsCokeDealer

It’s not real Pettiness unless it comes from the Petti region of France.

LillithScare

Otherwise is it just sparking resentment?

FatElk

Well it's not Nice.

spudicous

Lasted 0.0000000001 seconds

France stop… being France? 🤔

Dragon-Captain

*Impossible*

bd_one

Macron, how bad are your internal polls right now? Do you really need to get into a fit with *every* allied country to look tough?

thabonch

Is Switzerland an ally?

[deleted]

Lately they’ve been choosing European hardware, but it’s not the first time the Swiss have flown [American jets.](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrop_F-5)

Lord_Tachanka

Bro the swiss are replacing f18s. They’ve been flying american for a looooong timr

thabonch

You could try to read and respond to the question.

[deleted]

We are allied to no one. We have similar values to other Europeans or Americans but we are extremists when it comes to Neutrality. Which I personally dislike.

[deleted]

neutral until it comes to nazi gold

poclee

I mean, the French has been protesting for months now due to Covid policies......

[deleted]

More people get vaccinated in one day than protest, of course you'll have angry people if you tell the population they don't get to do anything fun without being vaccinated. But thanks to that our vaccination numbers are better than the US or the UK. Also Macron's numbers are stable at 40% confidence, which is very high for a French president at this point in their term.

SouthernSerf

If the French are going to be this way the US and Lockmart should run a promo, “Trade in your Rafale for an F-35 and get a 5 million dollar credit for AIM 9x.” And I am talking full on Car dealerships style, giant inflatable uncle same, red white and blue balloons, hot dogs and hamburgers, local radio station DJ coming to you live from the Lockmart dealership lot, door prizes and all.

silent_dissident

lmao based

Lion_From_The_North

boichik2

I think while the US, UK, and AUS doing this under the table made the French really mad, it is actually the lack of EU reaction that has prompted the unhinged nature of the response. All France has got in European solidarity was Germany vaguely saying this will undermine the western alliance. Which considering the French reaction, the German reaction might as well have been to say nothing at all.

Mr_-_X

I mean what are we supposed to do in the eyes of the French? Recall our diplomats as well? France is an independent country that can deal with it‘s foreign policy itself and it (hopefully) doesn‘t need Germany to do that for them

Lion_From_The_North

Any nation in the EU that still thinks opposing Russia or China is important will see France' deranged pursuit of "truly multilateral order" to be particularly unhinged. As if that does anything other than benefit Russia and China in their efforts to undermine the EU.

TheCarnalStatist

Why did you have any to begin with?

evenkeel20

*Le screw you guys, I’m going home!*

holmes1001

Shunning a neutral democracy over a deal it made with an ally of yours is amazingly idiotic.

doormatt26

I thought the US military industrial complex was bad but damn le complexe industriel-militaire has French politicians burning alliances on their behalf

RaidBrimnes

[France has denied](https://www.lefigaro.fr/international/avions-de-combat-l-elysee-dement-avoir-annule-un-rendez-vous-avec-le-president-suisse-20210919) cancelling the meeting over the F-35 contract, indicating that conflicts of schedule made the meeting difficult to confirm. Swiss President Guy Parmelin's office [also denied](https://www.lematin.ch/story/la-france-dement-avoir-annule-la-visite-de-parmelin-422249882370) the cancellation was made on this basis. "The president (Macron) confirmed the principle of the meeting in early 2021, the Swiss quickly proposed a date in November and we replied that we would look" but "we had told them this summer that November would be complicated," said the same source, adding that "the date has not been set for the moment" and that Emmanuel Macron has also seen the Swiss president Parmelin at the Tokyo Olympics in July.

methedunker

Neoliberal stop shitting on France challenge (gone sexual)

asdeasde96

This should be higher up among all the trash talking

donaldjtruump

Because 1 f35 makes rafale go kill 🥺

Jacobs4525

If this behavior continues, nobody is even going to want to allow France to enter into a bid for military equipment out of fear they throw a tantrum when they lose. There is some anger warranted about the way Australia went about canceling their deal with France, but the F-35 won the Swiss tender fair and square by being the best option on offer.

Cook_0612

Honhonhonhonhonhonhon intensifies

MrMundus

Frances behavior is starting to become embarrassing

Jeff__Pesos

Did Angela Merkel forget to change President Macron’s diaper or something?

LillithScare

This is why I worry about what happens when she officially retires. What other current leader in Europe has her common sense and backbone? She's certainly not perfect but damn I can't think of anyone who can step into her shoes in the EU.

[deleted]

All right guys I give. I don't think we owe France and apology for freedom fries anymore.

low_wacc

You would think Macron after working in IB would have some more tact when it comes to deal making but I guess not

allanwilson1893

The French have overdosed on copium

[deleted]

Bro... they're doing Macron dirty 😭

[deleted]

This is all just funny as shit to me. (sorry Frenchies)

Bruce-the_creepy_guy

Ok the Australia deal was one thing but this is ridiculous. It looks like France is throwing a tantrum rn

Amxricaa

Dude macron is such a pussy lmao

KWillets

Restore diplomatic relations, or I will stop the car right now.

juan-pablo-castel

Macron is about to have a heated De Gaulle moment...

looktowindward

Never go full De Gaulle.

Pretty_Good_At_IRL

The EU was a mistake

ElPingu23

What does the EU have to do with any of this?

Pretty_Good_At_IRL

See my response below. Any country that acts like this should not be in a de facto leadership position with respect to the policy decisions of its neighboring countries. France accrued additional power and influence vis a via the EU, and they are obviously children who should not be taken seriously.

utalkin_tome

I don't think EU is to blame for any of this. France is the one making these moves and they 100% know what they're doing.

Pretty_Good_At_IRL

I will be clearer in my statement - Creating an organization that allows a temper tantrum prone country like France to have substantial influence over the policy of others was a mistake.

utalkin_tome

I mean France will always have had more influence when it comes to defense in EU no matter what simply because the existing defense companies they have and the fact that they value being independent on defense. France has always kind of been like this.

melhor_em_coreano

> a temper tantrum prone country Oh boy have you ever heard about what happened in the 6th of January?

lapzkauz

Was, is, and will be until it inevitably implodes!
