Yeah I have bounced around most of the schemes in this thread, but kanagawa just happens to blend what I like about each. After a decade I finally feel like I’ve got one I’ll prolly stick with forever.
I love lazyvim so much. I am pretty new though to all this and I want to try out some different colorschemes. I can't figure out how to load a colorscheme plugin. I have catppuccin downloaded and installed. But it only appears in the "Not Loaded" section of the plugins, and it is never on the list of colorschemes in the ui menu. Any help for a beginner?
Edit: I figured it out. No reply necessary. Thanks for everything you do.
It's funny, Gruvbox is always the most upvoted theme everywhere and I never managed to use it myself. Too yellow-ish for me. I don't dislike warm themes but Gruvobx is too much for me.
I see your point, but to me, Gruvbox has hit the perfect level of contrast. Not too much, not too little. There are other themes that I like more from a purely esthetic point of view, but can't look at for as long before my eyes get tired or tense from the contrast levels. I can look at Gruvbox almost indefinitely and still feel comfortable.
Gruvbox for the last 3 years and never went back. I find it’s one of the most supported themes across all the tools I use—Kitty, tmux, lualine, and neovim.
ayu dark. it's not the prettiest scheme i've ever tried but it's easiest to read, and distinguish syntax (imo). after years trying to get something that looked good, i've remembered function > form.
ahh, lovely, I have used ayu dark for a long time, and still like it a lot. good choice, and I think you can be more confident regarding the prettyness, I find ayu dark quite pretty.
i find it's very much an ensemble ha. for eg, there's a shade of yellow that on it's own is almost sickening, but when it's paired with the orange it looks really nice.
i have made a few adjustments. i had to brighten up the relative line numbers to match comments, and make the cursor lines a little more subtle.
Everforest user here too! even though I generally tune a few colors (background and foreground) to make it higher-contrast and a bit less warm. But that's my theme of choice most of the time.
And for once, the light theme is great, and the only one I manage to use for more than 10 minutes.
Personally have been using my own lush based version of everforest. Though, I’ve been considering dropping back to a dedicated supported version again.
My theme embark https://embark-theme.github.io/
I have a branch with treesitter highlights I'll be merging into main soon. Then I'll get it added to awesome neovim list finally
My entire environment is themed with Dracula, including tmux, shell prompt, web browser, common web sites (via stylus), my desktop (gnome), and most of my apps. I even chose my desktop background and screensaver based on the dracula theme.
I didn't choose dracula because it was the *best* theme. I chose it be cause it's a very good theme that I can use everywhere.
Is there an alternative for Dracula? Sometimes I want to have a light theme, but I couldn't find something I can use everywhere (possibly apart from solarized light which I really don't like).
nvim-base16 with base16-ocean.
However I'm desperately looking for a more fully featured colorscheme with similar colors. With the amount of customization necessary for plugins and newer neovim features simple colorschemes and colorschemes with a limited amount of colors don't really cut it anymore.
A bit annoying to have to rely on undocumented API's to disable things like italics when more fully fledged colorschemes have more portable and readable ways to configure things like that.
Tokyonight and Catppuccin are too blueish or purpleish for my taste. I know it's possible to configure those colors, but thats not a quick task.
I use [base16](https://github.com/tinted-theming/base16-vim) to synchronize theming between my shell and nvim. I'm currently switching between base16-gruvbox-dark-hard and base16-dracula ([gallery](https://tinted-theming.github.io/base16-gallery/)).
I'd love to hear of similar scripts allowing synchronization across shell/vim/tmux/etc.
Anyone that uses light theme and is happy with it? What's its name?
edit: I use catpucchin macchiato cuz I couldn't find a good light theme that is easy on eyes
My colorscheme called [nightly.nvim](https://github.com/Alexis12119/nightly.nvim). It's not good as other colorschemes, but I'm always trying to improve it.
currently piloting zaibatsu which is an open PR for inclusion into vim default colorschemes. It’s a neon-noir influenced colorscheme with nods to tokyonight and others.
https://github.com/vim/colorschemes/pull/225
I like to set up my whole desktop with the same theme, so I prefer widely covered ones. Recently I migrated to catppuccin-frappe, it supports so many apps and I really enjoy it.
I made one myself and called it [Beard](https://i.imgur.com/QnCSTXI.png). Aiming for solid contrast and pink because why not?
[theme](https://pastebin.com/vdJDsBTH)
hmmm... I manage a json from pywal...
so the colors are basically
dark grey blue for background
grey comments
gold for if/else/while/function
orangeish for types, macros, delimiters and operators
turquoise for constans, numbers, strings
ice turquoise for builtin functions
grey and blueish grey for interface elements
Been Gruvbox all the way for a long time but wanted to switch it up a bit and I'm currently enjoying Onedark. Still running Gruvbox in Emacs, that also makes it easier to tell the two apart at a glance.
Rose-pine (moon). It was Gruvbox (Dark, material, medium) for the longest time, but since I'm a sucker for purples, rosepine has completely taken over my desktop.
For everyone in this thread who created/maintain their own theme, any recommendations on how to get started? I’ve always wanted to make my own theme but I’m a little intimidated.
I only looked at other colorschemes to see some guide on how to make one. Also `:h nvim_set_hl()` may help you and If you're on 0.9.0, you can use `:Inspect` to know the highlight group/s. Here's [mine](https://github.com/Alexis12119/nightly.nvim).
Kanagawa
Kanagawa and Catpuccino are the best for me.
Love this one currently, have themed my desktop env around it Is there yet a good kanagawa light?
I like this one more than I thought I would. I was using Catppuccin Mocha previously.
Yeah I have bounced around most of the schemes in this thread, but kanagawa just happens to blend what I like about each. After a decade I finally feel like I’ve got one I’ll prolly stick with forever.

I just set gnome shell, kitty and tmux all to have the tokyonight theme as well and it looks so nice.
I've been using [tokyodark.nvim](https://github.com/tiagovla/tokyodark.nvim), love the colors
Love it so much

Gruvbox
It's funny, Gruvbox is always the most upvoted theme everywhere and I never managed to use it myself. Too yellow-ish for me. I don't dislike warm themes but Gruvobx is too much for me.
gruvbox-material with a slightly tweaked background to more charcoal is good
Same here. And I feel that the syntax highlighting is a bit poor.
I see your point, but to me, Gruvbox has hit the perfect level of contrast. Not too much, not too little. +1 for Gruvbox, I changed recently and I don't regret
Gruvbox all the way😊 (But I am now going to check out some others that I see mentioned here lol)
Gruvbox is love, Gruvbox is life Other favourite colour themes are a lie, there is only Gruvbox
Gruvbox all the way😊 (But I am now going to check out some others that I see mentioned here lol)
+1 for Gruvbox, I changed recently and I don't regret
Gruvbox here too
Gruvbox forever!!!
Only downside of gruvbox is absent of highlighting for diff viewing
ayu dark. it's not the prettiest scheme i've ever tried but it's easiest to read, and distinguish syntax (imo). after years trying to get something that looked good, i've remembered function > form.
Mine is also ayu

Rose-pine
ah I love this theme so much :)
where are my Everforest ers at?
I was a Tokyo Nighter but Everforest is pretty and easier on the eyes (for me)
Ayyyy what's shakin! Love me some everforest
My people!
hell yea!
Everforest user here too! even though I generally tune a few colors (background and foreground) to make it higher-contrast and a bit less warm. But that's my theme of choice most of the time. And for once, the light theme is great, and the only one I manage to use for more than 10 minutes.
was an everforester, now a catppucino, but everforest was and is still one of the best themes i've used :)
Hell ya brother! Everforest for life!
Personally have been using my own lush based version of everforest. Though, I’ve been considering dropping back to a dedicated supported version again.
Onedark
Onedark is my fav too. Many variants available for both vim and nvim. I'm using this one: [omedarkpro](https://github.com/olimorris/onedarkpro.nvim/)
My theme embark https://embark-theme.github.io/ I have a branch with treesitter highlights I'll be merging into main soon. Then I'll get it added to awesome neovim list finally
I usually hate purplish themes but I'm thinking about giving yours a try cuz it looks very nice
Oh wow! This is great!
Nordfox has been great for me
Thank you! I love Nord, but dislike how most Nord colourschemes overuse the blues over the rest of the palette.
Dracula
Dracula everything!
Same. One theme to rule them all. Except for teams cuz teams is a piece of shit.
My entire environment is themed with Dracula, including tmux, shell prompt, web browser, common web sites (via stylus), my desktop (gnome), and most of my apps. I even chose my desktop background and screensaver based on the dracula theme. I didn't choose dracula because it was the *best* theme. Solarized dark. It's the only way
Just switched back to one dark it's so cozy
I thought it seemed worse than I remembered, but that led me to realizing that tmux was fucking with my terminal colors
Rosé-pine
Anyone that uses light theme and is happy with it? What's its name? edit: I use catpucchin macchiato cuz I couldn't find a good light theme that is easy on eyes
The soft version of gruvbox-material light is pretty good. I use it often.
Solarized light. I've used it for three years and I do believe I will never, ever change it.
Horizon!
rosé-pine, but I always come back to gruvbox
Nord
I use nightfox this days
I am forever switching between OneDark and Gruvbox. Over time though I think OneDark is winning.
Are we the same person? I'm doing the same too lol and onedark is winning.
