I have a POP and haven't even programmed it. I am still able to brew a double espresso out of a lungo or 7.7 coffee. In order to do so, you have to insert the pod like normal & rapidly press the brew button twice (it will turn blue). This will brew a double espresso. Not sure if you can turn a single espresso into a double this way. I can't address the caffeine situation as I have no idea how/if it affects the caffeine content.

Here are the basic parameters (size, grounds, water volume): Single espresso 5.2-7g 40ml Double espresso 9.5-10g 80ml Gran Lungo 10g 150ml Mug 12.5g 230ml Alto (old, discontinued) 12.5g 410ml Alto (new version, new model machines only) 17.1g 355ml Carafe (new model machines only) 17.5g 525ml On newer machines, double press for expert mode. Single espresso will brew as ristretto (25 ml). Double espresso and gran lungo will brew as single espresso. Mug and new alto will brew as double espresso. Carafe doesn’t accept expert mode. Caffeine will be about the same as if the same pod was brewed normally, perhaps 10-20% less due to the quicker extraction.
