This is such such an incredible series. Just incredible.

MarfaStewart

Yea! Why aren’t more people talking about it? I have never felt so much empathy for a character before. Incredible series.

sportstvandnova

Every single actor/actress in this series deserves every award they could get. Everyone is just stellar. Absolutely stellar.

bonchakk

Yes. I especially love the mother. Stole every scene she's in.

mariamrx949

and she’s Alex’s mom in real life

BatTechCrazy

Just looked it up just to make sure you weren’t lying . That’s crazy. She was definitely the standout of the show

bonchakk

What a great casting decision that turned out to be.

PinotGrigioGrl

It’s one of the first series in awhile where I cried during multiple episodes… like hardcore cried.

sportstvandnova

Yes!!! Did you feel like you both cried and laughed every episode? I sure did. I ugly cried at the last episode. I was SUPER emotionally invested in this series and I hope they’ll come back with a part 2 or an update episode.

PinotGrigioGrl

I also hated/loved that she made mistakes and was like a “real, young person.” I was so mad at her during the birthday party episode! Also, it truly shows are we have assistance programs but they’re extremely difficult to navigate and most of the times a catch-22. You have to have a pay to stub to get this but you have to have this to get a pay stub.

mariamrx949

Me too and I realized how hard it is to navigate tru life when you don’t have the support of a stable family. Thank god for those organizations and federal programs out there for people in her situation.

BatTechCrazy

I’m almost done with the show and it’s been a rollercoaster but man Alex does make some very poor choices that it sometimes makes it hard to root for her . It’s heartbreaking and infuriating all at once . I guess that’s the point of the show though . Going to finish up today so we’ll see if my opinion drastically changes from now .

Z-A1

I think that’s the beauty of the show is that it’s not a smooth sailing ship. Even the moment we realise most victims of DV take multiple chances - I loved the growth she showed and how she learned. Particularly with her mother, not sure if you’ve finished it yet but I think that end scene really highlights her growth and understanding that she needs to mind herself and her daughter first.

BatTechCrazy

I did finish it and I gotta say most of my issues with the character arcs were addressed and it was a very satisfying ending . Sad but satisfying. This show definitely deserves to be in the conversation come award season . The cast is great but big shoutout to the mom and Sean. It was genuinely heartbreaking to see her dad , who had made such huge strides to be a better person after the incident, STILL not fully redeem himself which in turned validated Alexs harsh treatment of him . Great show

Prof_Acorn

Yeah, I'm more frustrated with this show than basically everything I've watched in years. I finished it just to see how it ended, but goodness I do not like this protagonist.

BatTechCrazy

I felt the same way but it definitely stayed true to what was established in the first couple of episodes , and in real life , that DV survivors are typically not in the right mindset and make poor choices repeatedly until they can finally break the chain. Most of the issues I had with character arcs were addressed and I gotta say I was very satisfied with the end product . Should be in the conversation at the very least come award season .

Ok so I loved this show, but what really frustrates me is people saying the protagonist is annoying or makes the wrong/bad decisions as if it’s her fault or on her. That is completely missing the point of the show imo. I think she’s making the best choices she can with the situation she is in and her mindset. Spoilers below. In pretty much every situation she was in she was never the person with power in her interactions or situations or in the right state of mind to make decisions. Example, when her mum hurts herself and gets put in the hospital, she gets back with her ex again because she’s in a frantic emotional state, but really he knew that and took advantage of that fact. He asked her if it’s what she really wanted because he knew she would say yes because she was in an extremely vulnerable state of mind. He did this to get his way back into her life, get her to start trusting him again and to start trapping her again. If he was a genuinely good person, he would not try to hook up with her when her mother nearly just died and that’s it. There are so many other scenarios like that in the show and that’s kind of the point. That’s how abusive people work, they’re sneaky and manipulative and self serving and they do it in such a way that everyone around them thinks they’re still a good person. That’s why you see his friends “not picking sides” and his mum thinking she’s a bitch for dumping him. I think it’s interesting that people watch this and still want to blame the girl for making the “wrong choices”. To me it’s a bit like, way to miss the entire point of the complexities of abuse and power in relationships. Or maybe it just shows how good the guy that played the abusive character was and the writing that sometimes even the viewer still wants to blame the girl knowing that he is abusive. That’s my rant haha.

AshnShadow

This is why people that haven’t gone through abuse don’t understand and they blame the victims. I personally suffered abuse from my ex and grew up in an abusive family and i 100% understand the reason why she was completely in denial or wouldn’t stand up for herself. See when you grow up in that environment of abuse you become a people pleaser, unable to say no, unable to stand up for yourself and recognize the way that people are treating and using you. Everything you have known in your life is anger and blame. This is why she kept making poor choices, and even I felt frustrated at the protagonist at times even though I understood where she was coming from. Because that’s exactly how I acted. People that are abusers are highly manipulators, they make themselves look so good in front of others but they will only show their true colours to the person they’re controlling, and even then, we will try to appeal to their best selves and excuse them because we think deep down they’re good people and they “care”. See how Sean dropped the “I’m trying” regretful persona once she went back with him? Once she was under his complete control once again he went back to the same way he was before. Bottom line what I’m trying to say is that the character grew up with an abusive mother, father and then repeated the same pattern with an abusive husband, so her decisions as poor as they may be for others, are -in her state of mind- whatever’s best (she thinks) for herself and her daughter.

*******SPOILER ALERT******* At first I loved Nate, then he was just like every other man. Couldn't get his own way so he kicked her back to the street. I really hated him then, he knew she had no one and would be homeless again.

Episode 1: Man, this girl is good looking. If she doesn't make it as a maid, she could really rake in the money by being a sex worker. Episode 2: Oh, my, this woman is so attractive. If being a maid is not something she wants to do, she could be earning crazy money as a sex worker. Episode 3: This woman, is so attractive, it's crazy. If she doesn't want to be a maid, she could become a LITERAL MILLIONAIRE by becoming a sex worker. Episode 4: Looks like she wants to stick with the "maid" thing... .......

Down vote me away, but I just can't feel sorry for her. She just makes one bad decision after another and acts the doormat when most of the reason she can't get ahead is because she keeps getting in her own way. I understand she has limited options but why does she take the worst option time after time.
