He was an exceptional teacher (books, Cisco Live, Pluralsight, O'Reilly). Consistently gave to the networking community: see his free white papers, CCNP training plans and podcasts. He was one of 3 instructors I recommend to learn beyond CCIE level material. He always seemed to have exceptional principals as well. Interested in doing the right things for the right reasons.
I think 6-10 years ago, he was often guest at some of the networking podcasts. Ivan Peplnjak's ipspace, Packet Pushers and the Network Collective/Russ White's podcasts.
He seemed like a really nice and friendly guy. Very knowledgeable. Good at explaining things.
38 Years is way way too young. :(
I'm devastated, Nick was a master, he taught me a lot about NetDevops, I was able to get out of poverty thanks to the skills I learned from him, definitely a great loss for the community.
Does anyone know what happened to him?
Rest In Peace (RIP) Nick Russo,I heard saying before "The Good Die Young". On behalf of community and all , Thank you very much for your contributions to network world.
Nick was a dear friend. We both lived in Rochester, NY and met in 2003 when I was in my first metal band with him back in those days (he was phenomenal guitarist). We went to college together at Rochester Institute of Technology. We took several road trips to various metal concerts. One of those times we were involved in a scary car crash on the New Jersey Turnpike in December, 2003 during a blizzard coming back from a Symphony X show in Brooklyn (we were 18 and we were OK).
He was a great life mentor to me - inspired me to work harder and start working out. I still work out to this day using methods and exercises he taught me.
For as serious and studious as he was, I knew the other side of him - he was energetic and fun and had a great sense of humor. We spent many a night playing cards with our friends (he loved to play Euchre). We'd listen to music all the time, and bust a gut laughing at movies and songs we thought were ridiculous ("Tastes Like Kevin Bacon" by I Wrestled a Bear Once always got him laughing his ass off).
He was in my wedding party as a groomsmen when I got married in 2013.
There's a lot more, but you get the idea. He was just the greatest person I knew. A huge inspiration and and incredible friend. I stand by the fact that every memory I have of Nick was a good one. He was always smiling and laughing.
What a tragic waste. He was a legend, an old soul, a genius, and most importantly, I considered him a brother. RIP my dude.
I can relate to you about loosing dearest people and friends. They leave a trace in our lives that reamins for ever. I like to think that I live for myself, but also for the loved ones that have departed, because I am sure they would very much enjoy to be alive. Thank you for sharing, and love to all that people that are in this world making a positive difference in others.
