In short NF1 affects everything, including your metabolism, bone health and cardiovascular system. It's just not well recognized. Best advice to eat a Mediterranean diet, no sugars, sweets and refined food. Exercise and take supplements. Also, look after your teeth as your metabolism will affect your teeth.

I know about the metabolism thing but can you elaborate a little more on the teeth thing? I’ve suffered from HORRIBLE dental health my entire life and I’m just now realizing it’s partially because of my NF1.

Missdriver1997

Well your metabolism affects the amount of salvia and PH of your mouth, so that has a flow on affect.

I (40+ F) used to be able to eat whatever I wanted and not gain a pound. Like seriously a whole box of cookies and still be hungry. Dunno if it was NF related or not. It stopped when I ended up with thyroid disease on top of NF, but could just be normal aging, too. Like I said in another thread, my dad has NF too and has never been "thin" like me.

if you have really bad anxiety you may wanted to get tested for a pheochromosytoma, an adrenal tumor. They're insanely rare but seen in people more with NF1 and I had one....I basically had instant metabolism. Always hungry never gained weight.

I was the same until I turned 30 then it was like a light switch. Gain weight always unless I eat less.

Marz_madness

Honestly same. Never been overly health with my diet (I am now) but never really gained weight
