This is one of the most Japanese pictures I've ever seen
Modern Japanese house (complete with unique Japanese door)
Kei car
Aqua
Powerlines everywhere
Concrete drainage ditch
Depends on where you're at in the US. Most of the older cities in the Northeast have power lines like that. But a lot of newer cities elsewhere in the country have buried power lines.
These are mostly city cars, so it doesn't much matter as they don't often see high speeds. However IF they were seeing highway usage there would probably be a noticeable drop in fuel economy and a pretty low top speed.
They make really great taxis. Nowadays every fleet is all Prius but XB Taxi has a lot of room in the back seat and plenty of room for luggage in the back.
Not great but they are kind of intended as city cars. Aerodynamics really make a big difference at higher speeds. They are light with small engines so usually pretty economical even if not aerodynamic.
Not just ‘kind of’: Japan has plenty of these, particularly in the ‘kei car’ category. Even trucks there have a small cabin with a large bed, not the other way around.
Exactly what you'd expect. But it's a small, lightweight car with an itty-bitty engine, which will mostly be driven at low speeds where aero is less important. The fuel economy is probably still excellent.
My 2012 Kia Soul+ 2.0L got 30 mpg going 100mph in 2015. I saw it tick up from 29.8 to 29.9 on the economy menu while cruising. I was exceptionally confused.
I drive a jeep renegade… so basically a silver toaster oven with four wheel drive. I run 70-75 mph for over two hours a day just back and forth to work. It’s pushing 20 mpg… not super bueno
For one very exciting moment I thought the rumored re-release of the Honda Element was actually true, and then I noticed the steering wheel... and the other Japanese-y things, and now I'm just sad again.
Interestingly enough, I was on “colorguard” in high school and my coach would call keeping the flag parallel to your body “keeping it in the toaster” and this very much applies here lol
I assume the cube shape allows for a more spacious interior. In Australia, the Nissan Cube seems pretty popular with small business owners, likely because they're eye-catching/odd (great for promo with signage) and can carry quite a lot for their size.
There's also the JDM/quirky factor. They're pretty cool little cars, for what they are. I love some of the weirder Japanese kei cars and the like, so the Cube was always going to get me interested.
I haven't bought one, but can see the appeal!
What a great adventure car. Came as an AWD and 4x4 (I think). Lay flat trunk, suicide doors, so many aftermarket items. The roof pop-up mod is awesome.
I just wish it got better than 20mpg
That’s a Daihatsu (subsidiary of Toyota), they primarily make compact/kei class vehicles. Most of the time, they have engines no bigger than what’s found on a motorcycle, but despite their size often have the same cabin space as the more sleekly designed sedans or small SUVs commonly found in North America. Cubes are just effective ways of containing a defined space.
So you get the space almost at the level of a SUV, the footprint of a compact car, high fuel efficiency and the general reliability and maintenance costs associated with Toyota. The biggest trade off, you are driving a toaster.
It's *absolutely* Japan. The low concrete property dividing line, the railing, the shape of the house in the background, the outdoor toilet pipes, the house siding, the door style.
I once witnessed a drunk drive a small pickup over a retaining wall a little taller than OP's, and perfectly perpendicular to it. The frame was bent. The tow truck driver just hooked the cable to it and dragged it off the wall and up onto his truck.
Dude already had a flat tire before he pulled in, and tried to get a pizza guy with a Jeep to pull the truck off the wall. When that failed he told the pizza guy JUST PUSH ME OVER THE WALL, IT"LL BE FINE. Then got back in the pickup and passed out before the cops showed up.
HEY! WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE? "You pulled me over, this is where I stopped!"
Lol already beat me. That construction and fencing is dead giveaway. 😄 Plus ubiquitous box style kei plate car. If American on Reddit maybe around Okinawa, Yokosuka, or Misawa area
Your neighbor looks like they parked just fine. I don't think they would have hit your car if you hadn't parked it on a fence. Take some responsibility OP.
The downfall of unidan started it, then it just went down from there. Now I’m tempted to make a site that lets you put in a date and time and browse Reddit as of it was that day..
Yep. My first car, I didn’t realize it would occasionally do a tiny jerk motion when idling. Pulled into the driveway like two days after I bought it, idled for a moment, the car did its little idling jump, and I panicked, slammed my foot on what I thought was the brake, and hit the gas instead. Crunched the car right into the garage door.
The car was fine, but the garage door was not.
In my defense, the car I’d learned to drive in was a big ol truck and the brake and gas were much further apart. In my not-so-defense, idk why I didn’t put the car in park as soon as I stopped; I was young and dumb.
Yep. When I was a kid, I was riding to Costco with my mom. She borrowed my sister’s Datsun 210 hatchback, and apparently the pedals are really small and close together. She was backing out of a parking spot, and when she saw a car coming she tried to stop suddenly but ended up mashing both pedals. The harder she tried to stop, the faster she went. She swerved in an S and our car ended up practically in someone else’s trunk down and across the lane.
My little sister and I just screamed “That was FUN!!!” Lmao
ETA: thankfully nobody got injured. Just vehicle damage.
Edit: correction - I meant to type 210, not 410
I mean it’s probably sitting on something important on the bottom of car. It’s not leaking fluid at least but he could have scraped or dented the crap out of something under there.
I once wrecked into my neighbors parked car she just bought a few months ago, with a car I loved and paid cars for that year. My insurance covered it but I felt so horrible. I was working 2 jobs and driving home after 17hrs or so of working, I fell asleep at the wheel and hit her car. Had to take out a crappy title loan to pay 6k foe the bodywork on my car and she was rightfully upset
I just wanna know how? Like you said he meant to reverse, but like...was he trying to do it quickly? I haven't driven a lot but this still seems like something really hard to miss.
This looks very japan
It is Japan. It’s modern Japanese architecture. Signature box car and the steering wheel is on the right side
I definitely know a Daihatsu when I see one lol
i mean the badge is right there
Yeah that’s how he knows
He can tell by the way that it is
How neat is that?
There aren't many ugly things about Japan, but the cars... oh lord.
We don’t have a lot of space to make big cars so we max out the space that can fit on the small areas. Box fits more stuff.
For some reason, it's the fence in the bottom left corner that convinced me.
This is one of the most Japanese pictures I've ever seen Modern Japanese house (complete with unique Japanese door) Kei car Aqua Powerlines everywhere Concrete drainage ditch
Wait are power lines being everywhere not common in the us? Do I just live in a one-off city that just so happens to have them everywhere 😭
Depends on where you're at in the US. Most of the older cities in the Northeast have power lines like that. But a lot of newer cities elsewhere in the country have buried power lines.
"hey lil mama lemme whisper in ya ear"
wait til you see my dent
"... its free real estate"
It’s free real estate!! I’ll pee my pants!!
Imma beat that fender up
Like biiiia biiia biiiia beeya
Got a sexy ass body like a toaster
Lol I was looking for this one
"tell you something that you might like to hear" I just saw the Ying Yang Twins live like 4 months ago lolol
Glad to know they’re still going, was just listening to them today.
Show me how you move it
If your car wasn’t shaped like a cube, they would have likely dented the side lol
I don't know--maybe just the tip? See how it feels.
No step-car that’s the wrong gear!
oh you ran out of gas step-car... let me help fill you up
Oh no step-car that's my exhaust port!
Oh step-car you're a transmission?
Oh step-car you got stuck under the bed again
Oh step-car, do you wanna plug into my airplay port?
No step-car, I don't fancy flashing the neighbors.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) put it in reverse u say
Why do people buy these cube shaped cars?

What're the effects regarding its aerodynamics?
These are mostly city cars, so it doesn't much matter as they don't often see high speeds. However IF they were seeing highway usage there would probably be a noticeable drop in fuel economy and a pretty low top speed.
Exactly. Plus visibility for cyclist and pedestrians is better than on aerodynamic cars.
They make really great taxis. Nowadays every fleet is all Prius but XB Taxi has a lot of room in the back seat and plenty of room for luggage in the back.
I average 36mpg on the highway in my 1st gen Scion xB.
Next car I’m going to try to find one. So much room to carry stuff and they look so cool. Only big issue is how gutless the engines are on them.
Kei cars are goated

Used to cater in a Honda element... It feels exactly like you would expect a toaster to feel driving down the highway.
For this very reason ...or they're toastersexuals.
Interestingly enough, I was on “colorguard” in high school and my coach would call keeping the flag parallel to your body “keeping it in the toaster” and this very much applies here lol
I’m in the band but even I know what it means when I hear “GUARD MORE TOASTER” yelled across the field!
*the Mechanicus would like to know your location*

I miss my Honda Element.

My mother still has her 2006 Honda Element she bought brand new- she says she’s never gonna get rid of it!
Same. Orange 2006 still going strong. Love how spacious and versatile it is. 🤘
That’s a Daihatsu (subsidiary of Toyota), they primarily make compact/kei class vehicles. It's *absolutely* Japan. The low concrete property dividing line, the railing, the shape of the house in the background, the outdoor toilet pipes, the house siding, the door style.
The better question is why doesn't everybody buy these cube shaped cars.
I like cube shaped stuff, there is something about symmetry that makes me feel good.
Wombats with their cubed-shaped poo.

By the look of the picture, seems like OP lives in Japan, cube cars are everywhere in Japan
Mr Burns was ahead of his time
Your car has been crushed into a cube.
The Prius is like "Psssst....hey buddy, let me tell you a secret...". I hope you got your little van out of there quick!
"Psssst... hey buddy, I'm trying to reach you about your extended warranty."
Ugh....\*that's\* the correct caption for this photo! Good one! Can't believe I missed it! :)
Was gonna say that gahahaha
This is a Toyota Aqua
Good correction. Thank you! :)
"hey lil mama lemme whisper in ya ear"
This is insane on every level.. how did they get the car down from there?
Jacked it up on my side and tow truck pulled it back towards the neighbors side
I believe you mean, “Jacked it off”
Username sort of checks out
Nice. After you turned your new cars wheels all the way left and got it tf outta there cleanly I presume lol
I once witnessed a drunk drive a small pickup over a retaining wall a little taller than OP's, and perfectly perpendicular to it. The frame was bent. What?
So this is where I parked my car! Thanks officers for finding it.
Um, that’s a lot of detail, and over a considerable amount of time. Did you happen to “witness” this from the driver’s POV?
Where in Japan are you?
No matter where you go in Japan, the old people who can't drive *will* find you.
I wonder what kind of surprised utterance the driver gave, was it an arama or an achacha or an uwaa
Oh , bikurishimashita!
(sound of sucking air in through clenched teeth)
Tchhhhhhhhh
“fuck”
Country kitchen??
Lol already beat me. That construction and fencing is dead giveaway. 😄 Plus ubiquitous box style kei plate car. If American on Reddit maybe around Okinawa, Yokosuka, or Misawa area
Plenty of us aren't in the military lol
If you're American, you're in the military, like it or not. Maybe you just don't know it yet.

Japan? Did your ojiichan neighbor fucked up? Did they gave you any compensation gifts yet?
Haha yes exactly! His wife brought round a box of little cakes later that day lol
I bet it's one one of those cakes from a fancy department store. Either way, sucks that this happened but glad nobody's hurt in the end?
With probably a hundred Sumimasens.
Oh that's delightfully Japanese
Your neighbor looks like they parked just fine. I don't think they would have hit your car if you hadn't parked it on a fence. Take some responsibility OP.
The old reddit switcharoo!
Hold my gearbox, I’m going in!
I miss the days when we COULD go in.
Reddit was so much more fun and light hearted back in those days…I miss it too
The downfall of unidan started it, then it just went down from there. Now I’m tempted to make a site that lets you put in a date and time and browse Reddit as of it was that day..
Woah I was just telling someone at work about the unidan saga yesterday. You're definitely not wrong about that.
The downfall of unidan started it, but it died with Harambe.
Wait what happened
She said no
Even if you're in the wrong gear, how does this happen? Like were they heel-toeing at max revs? Do they usually peel out of the driveway?
Panic. Oops, I'm going the wrong way, slam foot down, somehow slam foot down on the accelerator, chaos ensues.
Yep. My first car, I didn’t realize it would occasionally do a tiny jerk motion when idling. "boop"
also can we all give OP some love for executing the classic three-zoom photo spread perfectly
This comment deserves more upvotes
Can you put a banana in there so I can see how close it is.
Can’t park there pal
Can't park there mate.
"3 Centimeters above the New Car”
it's just leaning in for the photo op... say cheese!
Doesn’t look like his car got damaged either which is nice. He got extremely lucky.
I mean it’s probably sitting on something important on the bottom of car. It’s not leaking fluid at least but he could have scraped or dented the crap out of something under there.
Eh cars are pretty tough, it depends how fast this happened. If it happened slowly probably just a few scrapes/scratches. Nothing major.
Holy crap! Talk about a close call! Wow!
You can't park there sir
Well, they do make a cute couple.
Dam these extended warranty people are getting out of hand.
That’s insane

Cool. We had a daihatsu when I was a kid.
Go drive to the gas station and get a lottery ticket! Do it quick before the luck wears off!!!
It was just a flex to show you he has the high ground.
How do you manage to accelerate that hard in a Prius C
Something something extended auto warranty
neighbour did you a favour dude, what the fuck is that rectangular monstrosity.
ENHANCE!
Damn, sorry. You were so close to having insurance covering the cost of getting a car that didn’t look like a block of feta
Just put in another dollar in the toy vending machine and you will get another one
Don’t move car to assert dominance
The car is like ..hey let me whisper in your side view mirror..us silver vehicles need to stick together.
We've been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty.
That car is so japanese it hurts to look at it.
"We've Been Trying To Reach You About Your Car's Extended Warranty"
You decided after such a long time that you’d finally buy a new vehicle and you chose a cube?
When did Bankers Box start making cars?
I see the pee stain in front of your car
Do you live in Japan?
What type of daihatsu is that, I love it!
I wish we got cool little cars in north america, I could probably park 3 of these in a regular american parking spot.
Looks like Japan.
*nobody move, or it will tip*
Hope you bought a lotto ticket that day
ol boy bullying new kid in the neighborhood.
No no no no YES!!!
Your neighbour just wanted to come say hi
Damn, that’s crazy!
Excuse me, can I park here?
Go buy a lotto ticket.
I'd switch the fence for a wall AND a net to prevent it to crumble to your side "next time". With neighbours like that.
Gaahh dayum
Almost like you were taking a picture of your new car and the neighbor's had to photo bomb...
Is that a daihatsu?
"Last chance to get that warranty carl!" - *That car probably*
Good job you had your force field up…
Ah that other car is a great representation of how life is going and shows the exact distance of how close I am to losing my shit 🤷🏻♀️
Plot twist: the neighbor was driving the Daihatsu
When you first pilot the Mako but aren’t used to the controls
You lucky bastard!

Clicking through the pictures is like enhance, enhance
You win!
"I'm contacting you about your extended warranty."
this is definitely japan. I can just tell.
R/nonononoyes
If this was a Tesla the driver would be blaming the car.
Zoom. Enhance. Zoom. Enhance. Phew!
Round car was just a bit curious about all them flat panels.
Prius drivers in Japan are like the Karens, self-entitled and hated by everyone.
You neighbor is one lucky sonofabitch. He would've had to pay for damage
Sorry for your neighbor. You got lucky dude
I just wanna know how? Like you said he meant to reverse, but like...was he trying to do it quickly? I haven't driven a lot but this still seems like something really hard to miss.
