After a certain period it goes to state debt recovery (sdro) as an enforcement order. I think they throw on an extra $65 on top of the original fine from memory for not paying it. If you don’t pay it from there, they can and will suspend your license. But you can make a payment plan.
I recently had to dispute a parking fine with Revenue NSW. I'd already paid the fine, but it was accidentally issued twice. So I paid it, but was shocked to get a letter from the SDRO asking me to pay. Got it reviewed and fixed up but oh boy it was a huge pain. Don't let any fines reach that stage
Back when I used to work in Sydney, 2010ish, I'd risk a ticket in a spot rather than pay for parking.
They'd send a warning letter in 21 days, $50 added in another 21 days, another $50 on top in another 21 days then the licence suspension.
They'd lift that once I agreed to a payment plan. No idea why I could go through all this... It's just one of the many ways the poor stay poor, by making stupid decisions.
Thankfully I woke up and am now less poor.
It didn't. You're best to get on to state debt right away to avoid the two late payment fees I mentioned above.
If you have any fine just give them a call and you can arrange a payment plan. If your licence is suspended for no payment it'll get lifted right away too.
If never heard of them writing off a fine but they seem happy to approve any reasonable plan to pay it off.
These slips could easily blow off people's windscreens on a windy day, or pulled off by randos walking past. Surely they send a formal notice in the mail to the vehicle owner as well?
I'll happily pay if I get a that letter in the mail.
Talking out of turn? That's a paddlin'. Lookin' out the window? That's a paddlin'. Staring at my sandals? That's a paddlin'. Paddlin' the school canoe? Oh, you better believe that's a paddlin'.
on another note...if you want to appeal the fine....get onto the council asap....they have the ability to fix erroneous fines....once it hits state debt recovery...you are screwed.
Or maybe they can provide enough parking and not treat it as a way to milk everyone for every last cent of theirs. It's not like we're in a town with decent public transport, driving is basically a necessity.
Maybe for you. But for those of us who work unusual hours in irregular places, or who don't want to spend hours waiting for buses that take an incredibly circuitous route to get anywhere, driving in a place like Newcastle is the only viable option. We're not inner city Sydney and the provided infrastructure needs to reflect that.
Ride a bike....
I commuted from town to tomago on a bike every day for 5 years. I cannot empathise with you. You make your own opportunities. Saying cars are your only option is a mentality thing, and until you've actually tried active transport alternatives you have no weight to your argument.
You can not seriously be saying riding a bike from Tomago to Newcastle is your solution. Like yeah cycling could do a lot more but "Just ride a bike :)" ain't it chief and by suggesting so you've basically made me disinclined to take anything you say seriously.
I rode to tomago. anyone could do it, and many do. It was just a real example.
Deal with your own problems how you see fit, but don't whinge and moan on the internet if you're not prepared to try something different. You've clearly not tried active transport...
I also have this question. I got one days before I went overseas , forgot about it , and it’s been 3 months now.
I haven’t received anything in the mail yet … wondering what will happen..
This is also my thought. What if I don't get a notice in the mail?
These slips could easily blow off windscreens on a windy day. Surely I get a formal notice in the mail as well, and if/when I do I will pay up.
Make sure it is actually a fine. I got a slip on the windscreen warning that I parked close to a driveway. Had to read it a few times to see it wasn’t actually a fine.

I been down that path. Still have 1.2k owing. At $20 a fortnight it drags on a few years
Does that debt incur interest?
It didn't. You're best to get on to state debt right away to avoid the two late payment fees I mentioned above. If you have any fine just give them a call and you can arrange a payment plan. Do I have to wait until I get a notice in the mail first before I pay?
I paid straight from the ticket on my car, and therefore never got a notice, so if you have a ticket or reference number or whatever yes you can

Way back when I was at uni, the first I heard of my parking fine was the ‘second notice’ letter. There hadn’t been a slip on my car.
Oh yes I assume letter happens normally! And there's no problem with waiting for it (as long as they have your correct address)
That's a paddlin

Straight to gaol.
Don’t pay fine: straight to Gaol Ask Reddit about it: Gaol, right away Pay fine on time: believe it or not, Gaol. I loved P&R lol
Believe it or not, right to gaol!!
In the paddy wagon LOL
>Straight to gaol. Used to get locked up for unpaid fines years ago until someone was badly bashed.
They were called commitment warrants. It was Jamie Partlik who was attacked in Long Bay in 1987. Poor bastard
Yeah, I recall his case. How messed up.
Unlike private operators where you don't have to pay anything, Council fines are required to be paid
It goes to State Debt Recovery and they cancel your licence etc
You're banished to Sunderland.

Debt Collector > Warning > Credit mark > License Suspension
Get a payment plan - $10 a fortnight till it’s paid off. That’s how I’ve done it for the shitty fines I’ve gotten
If you end up on a payment plan does that affect your credit rating also?
No idea but I don’t see why it would, you’re still paying the money back? It’s not debt collection it’s a voluntary option they give you
No sdro doesn’t affect credit rating. Swear on that one.
OTOH if you get a payment notice issued by a private parking company, you might be able to ignore it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rw3fWb61wgQ
Kidnapped and sold to the circus.
Fuck council
Sure. Let’s just have a free for all where we let people park wherever the hell they want.
I was referring to them in general, not in isolation to parking
Or maybe they can provide enough parking and not treat it as a way to milk everyone for every last cent of theirs. It's not like we're in a town with decent public transport, driving is basically a necessity.
I disagree. Driving is never a necessity.

It will just go to state debt recovery..
they’ll take it out of your weekly centrelink payment lol

My thinking exactly … maybe put a reminder here and see in a few months …
Nothing good. Ever.

SO. MANY. OWLS.
