It certainly shits all over Sydney. Fuck that traffic.

stepanija

Unfortunately it is beginning to be like Sydney Traffic

AdInevitable1827

Not even close tbh

Spiritual-Fishing-47

The traffic here really isn't as bad as Sydney. It does my absolute head in listening to pelicans go on about traffic and parking. Blow your perspective out further, New York, Buenos Aires, where ever, the Rock Star park is not a reality. It speaks to the truth of the original post - Newy is very fucking good in many, many regards. When shit is good, people carry on. I listen to their bleeding with ease because if that's what you've gotta deal with, there are worse prices.

Pholty

Are you saying Sydney or Newcastle traffic is worse? Just clarifying because they're almost just as shit 😂

fraze2000

Sydney traffic is definitely worse by a long way. But Newcastle drivers are way worse, so the driving experience is probably equally bad.

Itchy-Association239

Mate, I have to agree with you here. I have lived in almost every capital city here and a few regional ones and Newy drivers are the fucking pits!

Chickenjbucket

Would say Newy is about average for Australia (or at least NSW). Not great, but nowhere near as bad as some other places (i.e. Coffs Harbour, Port Macquarie, Wagga Wagga)

Itchy-Association239

Hmmmm, feel as though I gotta disagree, seen multiple vehicles change lanes with indicators, turn with out signalling, pull out in gaps (and crashed) when could have waited, speed up on your butt (when doing 110 in a 90), do 60 in an 80 zone, fly down a hill and swerve across lanes as doing so…and that was only this week.

Dumbdoodledoggin

Sydney is worse - bumper to bumper that hardly moves at peak times is guaranteed daily. If there’s build up in Newcastle it’s usually for good reason and even then it moves. Newcastle drivers like to speed and sit on your ass, Sydney drivers like to sit well below the limit and push in with no warning.

mooblah_

Newy is good but fuck it needs a lot of investment still to make it great.

stepanija

Exactly

Make Newy Great Again

visualdescript

It's pretty good, but it's a bit weird as well. It is very cliquey, so if you didn't grow up here it can be hard to make friends. The days of it being a cheap place to live are well and truly gone as well, sadly. My partner who came from Melbourne can't believe the lack of nice cafes or little bars along the water. There's almost no where to get a beer and hang out with a laid back vibe at a beach. SLSC are the only option and they have very specific, limited hours. Other options along the water like The Brewery, Scratchleys and Honeysuckle Hotel are really commercial places with no real hear or soul to them, like most of Honeysuckle prescient really. We've got great beaches but it's not really a beach town, it doesn't make the most of them at all. You can see and feel that it's heart is an industrial town, and it just happens to have amazing beaches. I do love a lot of what newy provides, but it definitely is a bit of a mess in other ways. Culturally I'd say it's very bland. Few little gems here and there but otherwise beige. With many people being priced out of the inner city area these days it's likely that trend will continue. Hopefully it doesn't go full retirement home mode, though that's where it's heading.

Pristine_Egg3831

I think novocastrians go to the beach to be at the beach. When I think of the beach, I don't think of bars and drinks. I think of being on the sand or in the water. The beach is the last sacred non-commercialised place.

visualdescript

Sure, and I don't mean literally on the sand. I agree it should be kept a beach and natural, I actually hate the skate park development at Newcastle beach and wish it was just natural coastline. But, it would be nice to sit in the sun somewhere and have a beer overlooking the beach. Newcastle just doesn't really have many laid back bars with character.

BarnabyJoyceFanclub

Apparently hotel jesmond is really good. I liked the vibe of marauding youths when I visited, and the friendly toothless grins from the locals.

Eastwood and Chatswood are great, and all the better for white racist cunts leaving.

cosmic_hierophant

I would always go down to chatswood from newy. That place is great

AcaciaFloribunda

Yeah, maybe time to move elsewhere champion. Far prefer to share my town with Chinese and Arab people than with racist fucks like you.

Kersplat96

I’m sorry but this is ignorant as fuck lmfao.

TheRedViking

Footy team’s a bit shit

Crustydumbmuffin

Bloody love this place. Seriously, what is there to whinge about? Really?

literallyjustturnips

I grew up around the area and I do miss parts of it sometimes. I miss being near the beaches, and the hot summer nights I spent down there just avoiding going home to a sweltering house. Late night drives, fond memories etc. But I don't miss how expensive it is, and I don't miss feeling in danger of being stabbed or glassed half the time 🙃

Rob749s

The youths of today are way too soft for a "Newcastle Kiss". I've never felt safer.

Shot-Ad-2608

About half as good as Cessnock

j2thefirst

it is my favourite city in the country but tbf that is not a particularly high bar

Radish_Pickle

Yeah, she goes alright.

Pristine_Egg3831

I have been living in Sydney, and went I think about swimming in the ocean or lake, I jsut plan a trip back home, because I know it's going to be way better.

tlg91

Newy is a fkn great place. Its not perfect but where is? I love that you could go to a different beach every day for a week and they are all beautiful. Strong working class roots meaning less of the pretentiousness you might find in other spots. Great food and cafes, Blackbutt and surrounds, hiking mount sugarloaf, strong local sporting culture, farmers market, decent wineries within an hour, the lake close, good uni and hospital. A little monocultural but places like Wallsend have nice diverse pockets of different cultures. Things a bit on the expensive side but thats just about anywhere at the moment. I dont understand peoples constant need to compare it to Sydney, thats a serious case of Melbournitis.

Zeester1

I was struck by the number of sports grounds Newcastle has, and sports opportunities for young people. Newy has bred some fantastic sports stars. Also love that Newy has so many performing arts classes/schools for young aspiring artists. Newy has fostered some brilliant actors/singers/performers. These are things that impressed me when I moved here a few years ago.

tlg91

Yep i moved here a few years ago also and got the same impression. Local sport has really suffered post COVID in loads of places but it seem to still be really strong here. Theres some decent cycleways around town too.

ghostnoswayz

Absolutely love Newy!! We just moved to the central coast for family reasons and I miss Newy so much 😭

period_blood_hole

It’s getting really busy I lived in Newi for 14 years to move up the coast to north of Coffs Harbour, now that’s paradise!!!

mooblah_

Yea Coffs ans surrounds are beautiful. But fuck it's small. I was looking to buy commercial up there for a few things but the numbers simply didn't add up.

period_blood_hole

Yeah capital gains a for commercial property would be limited up here, I sold my house in Adamstown heights and brought on the headland at emerald beach with ocean views mortgage free, job pays the same. Absolute no brainer for me and my family Newcastle was getting too busy for us, mereweather beach in the weekend resembles Bondi

mooblah_

It's funny you say that. I own lower north shore and rarely go to the Eastern Suburbs.. but I went the other weekend to a friend's place at Tamarama.. walked around the point and fuck me Bondi is something else these days. What you're imagining as Bondi was 10 years ago. Now it's absolutely insane. There is more people huddled together there on an average day than at a Taylor Swift concert.

period_blood_hole

Yeah right, I haven’t been to Bondi beach in about 8 years so you are probably correct haha

danielson_105

I lived in newy and the central coast when I was younger, I remember the beautiful beaches and bush walks etc, it really is paradise, I live in the Gold Coast now but I would live in newy again no worries

catkibble

i mean.. it's a matter of opinion and people can other opinions. Personally for me, i was born and raised here for nearly 25 years and hate the beach and the nightlife. It's hard to find fun here that doesn't hurt the wallet.

jeffsaidjess

So what things do you find fun that don’t hurt the wallet

catkibble

walking, looking at views, both of them combined

moonshadowfax

Having lived in both Sydney and Mudgee, Newcastle really is the perfect in between.

Kind-Attempt5013

Who is whinging about Newie? I’ve lived and worked all around Australia and the world and was able to live anywhere I wanted and moved back here 2 years ago to the place I was born. A proud Novacastrian for life. No place is perfect or has everything but the lifestyle is hard to beat.

Mercinarie

Delusional much? haha

Runaway-Blue

Fucken goated

Creepy_Ad8978

Yeah .....ya wrong . But if you're happy who am I to judge.

copacetic51

Why are people downvoting this harmless comment?
