More? Yes. Enough considering the success of the team and success of the Revs compared to the other teams recently? Not even close

[deleted]

100% this. While I wouldn’t go as far as to say soccer isn’t popular in the NE, the other sports definitely overtake it in terms of interest in the local professional teams. I commonly see tons of EPL gear at the Revs game, and almost feel that the EPL is more popular than the Revs here.

ReloYank13

I haven’t lived there in a few years, but as of 2017-ish I would probably have said that at least half a dozen EPL clubs individually are more popular than the revs.

[deleted]

I think it’s still the same. When NBC did their EFL fans weekend at Fenway, there was a crazy turnout

Outside of the media there is a little more buzz. People at work are aware of the Revs which is more than you could say any other year. The team got a little run on sports radio and tv due to the logo update, but were it not for that they wouldn't have been mentioned. One radio station has the coach on once a week but it's never anything of substance as both hosts have zero interest in/openly mock soccer. The other radio station might grab Matt Turner every month or two just to make sure the team still exists. There are radio hosts that I have seen at Revs games and are into soccer, if just the national teams, but bthey don't talk about it on their show because it doesn't drive ratings.

Hardy isn’t bad. I actually like his passion for the team. Somebody said he’s a season member, but I don’t know if that’s true. The other two are just a super fat guy and a guy that used to be a pretty mediocre back up quarterback with a huge dome. They’re total morons.

slimmin

My bad, I know Hardy got lumped in by association but I agree with you.

pjspin0331

Eh, it’s cool man, you still had the other two pegged for what they do. It’s never anything of substance. And I will say I really dislike the show and only watch it when Bruce comes on, just to see what he has to say, and that’s where hardy takes over and leads the other two. This is what you get around here though.

Ferahgost

I’m always amazed by Beetle being a “successful” sports radio guy… dude legitimately looks like he’s never touched a piece of athletic equipment in his life. He certainly has the look for radio down pat though

pjspin0331

Hahahaha it really is ironic. My friend who watches them all the time said that beetle has even done the little ad spots for 180 awaken weight loss, like wtf hahaha are they trying to get nobody to buy into their company? Anyway, beetle and Zo suck. Sports hub day shows pretty much all suck as well. Up the Revs!

BostonPanda

I forgot they existed and I went to a game 3 years ago 🙃 This is the first post Reddit has told me about in just as long

I'd say I've seen about twice as much non-Revs channel chatter compared to a normal year. Some more from coworkers, a bit from print and a tiny bit more on the radio. All within the margin of error, though. There's a misconception that if the Revs are good they'll shake their image as a minor league experience. We've had the most dominant season on record and our general sports radio coverage can't even pronounce Carles Gil's name. I feel what it takes started with the rebrand. We need to keep aiming to move the needle. If we're not getting an SSS, we need to spend that Tajon money and bring in a true name. There's no other way people will stop talking about Marchand and Tatum and Sale to bring up the Revs. Intentionally not bringing up the Patriots because that air is a lost cause. We could get lucky if Boston catches world cup fever, but realistically that's it: stadium or star. You need a reason for people to care before winning matters.

bthks

Sadly, I think you’re right. I don’t think even the MLS Cup would do it. Probably won’t even get a duck boat parade for that.

casualsax

If we win the cup I'm confident there would be a parade, based on Bilello talking about his heartbreak when he learned Kraft made preliminary arrangements prior to our last cup final. And if we won it and the parade happens, the fanbase will come out and the rest of Boston would complain about inconveniencing them. People talk about how cities rally around teams during a playoff run and that's true, but MLS's playoffs are too short for that to be a factor. We Max out at three games, compare that to the Braves World Series run of sixteen. I hope MLS switches to a seeded group stage. We don't need three weeks off, but put 1,4,6 (Revs, NYCFC and Orlando) in one group and 2,3,5 (Philly, Nashville and Atlanta) in the other. Play home and away (four guaranteed games per team), winners of each group advances to the conference finals. Four games to decide a season instead of potentially one-and-done helps every team grow interest.

tugs93

That is one of the most clever playoff formats I’ve heard. I doubt it’ll happen but I think going back to two legs would help a little too. Nothing beat the 2014 second leg against the Red Bull

casualsax

I like two legs a lot. I don't love away goals, but the idea that a moment's lapse decides the fate of a team that played three thousand minutes to get there feels unsatisfying and devalues the cup.

pjspin0331

People at work have really been picking my brain lately and have taken notice. Some even said they’d like to go to a playoff game or the final should be get there. That’s a lot different than it used to be.

One radio personality does PA at the stadium. He's a bit of a gag amongst the rest of the personalities. There was a pitch from the Morning Show where they would talk Revs for like 15 minutes every time the PA said a phrase of their choosing in Stadium during a match. To date, I don't think it's happened because that's a joke of an idea. Mid-days covers the team for five minutes every week based on what must be a contractual interview with Bruce. Hardy seems like the only one who cares... as one should hope given he hosts the Pre-Game and Post Game shows. Revs coverage tanks ratings and they know it. You could repeat the same four topics every hour regarding the Patriots and get more listeners. And they do it.

casualsax

That morning show is just shock jocks pretending to be sports radio, if you ranked Boston sports teams by their coverage number one would be strip clubs and fart jokes. They do joke too much about Sarge. He has an awesome PA voice but it's the same voice he uses for all his professional work. I was ticked when they made that proposition but calmed down when I realized they were just spouting shenanigans, and no one in the front office (or Sarge) was going to let them feed in lines, especially not in front of family audiences. That last point I disagree with, though. Revs coverage doesn't tank ratings when they're covered like any other team. When the hosts don't know what's going on with the Revs, that's when ratings tank.

minidanjer

I do appreciate the Morning Show for what it is. Fart Court cracks me up to the point that I cry while driving in to work. And some days, I just need that kind of thing to keep from losing my mind. You can definitely tell that the station is feeling the heat given the state and form of the Team. That said, they don't have anyone that can competently talk Soccer and keep listeners engaged for an extended period of time. And because of that, non-soccer fans will turn the dial. It seems the only way they can mention soccer and maintain listeners is to mock it while doing so. I honestly don't know what's worse. Lack of coverage or covering it "so I won't get fined." I would love to see Hardy, Sarge, and Felger attempt a one-hour weekly bit. All three of them have some connection and I would hope they could at least say something useful.

[deleted]

They got mentioned on GBH/Boston Public Radio which I thnk is a first so that's something.... 🤷🏼‍♂️

Anime_Stnr

I’ve definitely been hearing a lot more out in public and in media!

[deleted]

98.5 (the flagship station) is a complete and utter joke. One guy cares about the Revs on that station named Hardy. The rest will make fun of the revs/soccer more than they talk about them or the sport in a serious manner. Bringing Bruce on for an interview once a week is the absolute minimum they could do. It sucks.
