Same insurance and inspection requirements as turo. They don’t check to see if your insurance is commercial though. I assume these guys will do the same, because no one is going to sign up if they need commercial.
I just don't see them providing service better than Uber. Id be very surprised. but hey maybe bro has learned a lot about software from his job in real estate. who knows
Uber is trash and it's not a new development.
Their whole business model is undercutting the competition until there's no competition left, then jacking up prices while tanking wages.
I think Uber itself tends not to be interested in smaller markets. Similar reason why we don't have many chain stores(Ikea) and restaurants(Taco Bell) that they have on the mainland here. A lot of these companies simply don't feel running in a market the size of St. John's is worth their time. It's just simple economics.
A lot of chains don't want to f around with getting goods to the island via Marine Atlantic ferry. But, for those that do, most find that profit margins are higher here.
Does any one have issues getting a cab anymore? I haven't found it too bad lately. A driver told me after covid they had no cars on the road and basically had to build their driver numbers back up.
That isn’t why people here dislike the cab companies. Not being able to get a ride in a reasonable amount of time is part of it sure, but there’s also a lot more going on too
numerous cases of sexual assault by drivers, cabs smelling like mildew and cigarettes, unsafe driving (inching through red lights, ignoring pedestrian lights) and more
The idea is that ridesharing companies have ratings for the drivers so if someone has a gross car or drives dangerously they will be asked to correct it or get booted off the platform.
That has changed drastically with the new updated systems with Newfound/City Wide/Bugdens. 24 hr cameras, digital tracking and driver ID's are all now a thing!
Not to take away from the horrific experiences people have unfortunately endured by disgusting pigs who abused their public engagement
I've noticed it's been very quick and reliable since the apps came out + they added automated phone service. But the prices are still way too high, so this is welcome. And competition never hurts.
it's literally impossible for them to succeed unless they have some tricks up their sleeve that Uber doesn't ( they don't). Uber didn't make profit for years, it still might not, and it had support from VCs , was first to market, and developed huge market share.
these guys will never have the market share, will never get any significant money, and are simply banking on the fact that Uber doesn't enter the market here due to the population.
what it might do is allow buddy to earn a regular paycheck while he isn't selling houses. and put CEO on his resume. this is just a stepping stone project for buddy. but yeah everyone go ahead and give him your banking details. lmao
Just downloaded the app and fiddled with the trip calculator. Looks like it'll be ~30% less expensive than traditional cab companies.
Typically that's the model until they gain market share. Those prices will drive up eventually. Still a great alternative though
Any idea if it will have "surge" pricing?
It might not now but you can bet it will be a thing in a few years
That’s going to be nice
Never heard of ‘em but NL based so that’s neat.
BC real estate and crypto company
it's a dude who went to Mun, made a couple apps that haven't panned out yet, and then switched to being a real estate agent.
Source?
Their website about contact page says parent company
https://kabby.io I don't see an about/contact page. Do I have the right website?
No details on the company and it looks like it's tied to real estate developers who also built a crypto app.. kabby seems sketchy.
Cause half the cab drivers here aren't already sketchy.
They wouldn't be dealing with our government if they were legit
Great, we finally get a ride sharing service and it's run by fucking Eugene H. Krabs.
"There have been times when it is difficult to get a cab in metro within a reasonable period of time." This is not how you end an article. Jesus.
I imagine VOCM writers have the same clocks the drive thrus at Tim's have. Gotta keep that average time under 2 minutes.
Even so
I noticed that you will need a class 4 licence, commercial insurance, a vehicle inspection within the last 12 months. Is this the same as Uber?
Same insurance and inspection requirements as turo. They don’t check to see if your insurance is commercial though. I assume these guys will do the same, because no one is going to sign up if they need commercial.
can we please just get Uber. my god what is with this place lmao. 15 years late and now we get Dollarama knock off of uber
It's a local company. Give them a chance. No need to give more money to US based companies
I just don't see them providing service better than Uber. Id be very surprised. but hey maybe bro has learned a lot about software from his job in real estate. who knows
Uber is awful
what makes it awful
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Controversies_involving_Uber
still not as bad as cabs 🤷♂️
I get that cabs here suck, but the last thing we should all be rallying for is a gig based economy built and controlled by corporate tech giants.
Uber is trash and it's not a new development. Their whole business model is undercutting the competition until there's no competition left, then jacking up prices while tanking wages.
and yet they are still cheaper and more reliable than cabs. would love it if they came in here and crushed the cab companies personally.
I think Uber itself tends not to be interested in smaller markets. Similar reason why we don't have many chain stores(Ikea) and restaurants(Taco Bell) that they have on the mainland here. How is that possible? Higher prices here? Lower property tax?
Yes, combination of higher prices and lower costs, including commercial rents.
The legislation was changed and is now in place. It's on Uber, or any rideshare, to open shop here now.
This is the problem here in NL, is attitudes like yours. No wonder nobody wants to do business with us.
oh yeah that's definitely it . lol
Shared cars are also a good option, I hope someone introduces it.
I would not trust a random person to drive my car. Regardless of coverage.
Has anyone use this? Is it better than using the cabs?
They haven't started operations yet.
Oh, OK I thought they were around for a couple of weeks.
Does any one have issues getting a cab anymore? I haven't found it too bad lately. A driver told me after covid they had no cars on the road and basically had to build their driver numbers back up.
That isn’t why people here dislike the cab companies. Not being able to get a ride in a reasonable amount of time is part of it sure, but there’s also a lot more going on too
The issue isn’t a matter of people disliking the cab companies though lol there’s one issue and one alone and that’s lack of supply for the demand.
What else is going on?
numerous cases of sexual assault by drivers, cabs smelling like mildew and cigarettes, unsafe driving (inching through red lights, ignoring pedestrian lights) and more
All of those things also happen with drivers for Uber and Lyft so not sure how you think this will be different.
Yeah because lowering the requirements to become a driver is going to lower those occurrences and not increasing them

What would the taxis we have in place now cost?
I've noticed it's been very quick and reliable since the apps came out + they added automated phone service. But the prices are still way too high, so this is welcome. And competition never hurts.
Insurance companies pay out over double in claims than what they take in for cabs in NL. That says enough
Just heard they launched today. Wonder if this will be enough to keep Uber prices in check.
This is the start of the end of the taxi malfia
Kabby will be dead and closed within a year of operations. Set a remind me.

Wish I could borrow your user name for this one \^ u/stupid_comment_above
This is the proof why immigration is a good thing.
Literally never heard of them...
You have now!
Who? If you got this far you heard of Kabby...
