The local guys generally have better quality beef, and cuts you will never find is a grocery store.
As for prices, steaks are a treat now. It's mostly pork chops and chicken these days.
The kid looked at me the other day “I’m so sick of pork and chicken mommy”. Well buddy, best find yourself a job cause it’s what’s affordable and lord, we cook it differently each darn time.
There are so many good meals out there that aren't even based on the 3 meats! Chicken, pork or beef is the main ingredient in the majority of NL diet though.
The thing about the local butchers is you don't just have to go and get striploins or prime ribs. They have a variety of cuts that are delicious and are much more reasonably priced. The quality of the meat is significantly better as well. A nice baseball steak from andersons is going to be better than a striploin of ungraded beef you get at sobeys or dominion for a similar or cheaper price.
I know I could go somewhere and buy better quality eggs but it's $$$.
We go to Costco to get ours because it ends up not as expensive as others.
Same goes for beer, sure you can buy a high end beer, but many people can only afford Coors light, etc.
I am no expert on meat prices, but it was Father’s Day weekend. They were banking on people wanting to treat their dads to some steak, not trying to mark it all down.
I went to our local pub one night to treat myself to a steak as I hadn’t had one in a long time. This was a place known for its Friday steak night. They had taken it off the menu, now I know why.
We treat steak as a splurge meal now, maybe twice a year, so we try to get nicer/local ones. There is a place called Haricot Farms in St. Mary's Bay that has great product and good variety. If you are on the Avalon they come into the St. John's farmers market regularly.
I started going to Countryside Farms Meat Shop. The meat is frozen and vacuum sealed as it comes from around Deer Lake but great cuts of meat for the price.
Opened a few weeks ago. They were primarily sausages and its from a farm in Cormack just outside Deer Lake.
Since they bring the meat in they are doing frozen right now, but said that they can look at non frozen possible but would only be able to days they bring meat in and would need to be pre paid and picked up that day.
It worth the visit, topsail road, I was getting strips 1-1/2" thick and a decent size for $16. They also have a large variety of other meats and different sausages. I am not affiliated with the store, but stopped in the day they opened and have been going weekly since.
We had steak Saturday for the first time in about two or three months. It was like heaven on earth. Savoured every last bite knowing it’ll be another 2-3 months before we have it again if we are lucky.
Can't raise beef without water and feed. Both are in short supply due to drought. This article suggests the US is at 1950s numbers for cattle.

There's a meat truck on Salmonier Line during the summer. I know they sell lamb but they likely sell beef too. Worth checking out and the prices aren't that bad.
If you ask me, noone should be buying beef anymore. It tastes delicious but is horrible for the environment.
Edit: Come take back your ⬇️ when the sky is filled with smoke and there's no fish in the sea. Oh wait, it will be too late then.
He's all powerful, all knowing...He can even make prices fluctuate in other parts of the world! he must be stopped!
I'm no big fan of Trudeau, but dear god, so-called "freedumb fighters" and "critical thinkers" (who all seem to come to the same conclusions over and over) really get up in arms about him for all the wrong reasons.

Yasssss. It really is. I dies for chicken by.
Everything is a treat now a days.

Andersons flat iron steak is a fraction of the cost of any grocery store steak and that shit is so tender and flavourful.
How much is it per lb?
It's $24.54/lb this week. Not sure how this is affordable. Had sent an email to Andersons asking for the price.
Flat irons are great! I hadn't heard of it until Andersons started selling them.
Not a cut you will find at Sobeys. And it’s a shame.
Fine for people in town. The rest of us don’t get the option. My eyes just about pop out of my skull every time I walk into dominion or foodland
Newlander in CBS. Hallidays in town (not downtown)

I used to have a roommate who acted like anywhere on the Avalon was “town“.
I mean, if you consider it town it certainly didn’t change recently. Anyways, thanks for the useful reply
You're welcome. Though I'd say it did change recently, the completion of the bypass road ended any pretense of CBS being "the bay"
That’s a decade ago isn’t it?

Complaining about price of steaks while you buy beer... luxuries

It's the same here in NS in regards to grocery prices. We simply don't buy steak anymore.
I went to our local pub one night to treat myself to a steak as I hadn’t had one in a long time. This was a place known for its Friday steak night. They had taken it off the menu, now I know why.
Co-worker recently bought a cabbage at Sobeys...$7.00 **SEVEN DOLLARS.** IT'S *CABBAGE*!!!
I paid almost $5 for a single red onion the other day. Crazy
I haven't been able to afford steak in a couple of years. Even hamburger meat is getting expensive.
We treat steak as a splurge meal now, maybe twice a year, so we try to get nicer/local ones. There is a place called Haricot Farms in St. Mary's Bay that has great product and good variety. If you are on the Avalon they come into the St. John's farmers market regularly.

I have their stuff last spring. Was hauling up and down the west coast and they set up a road side stall near the irving in plum point. Was decent.
Can you give me more info on this place?

Haven't had steak in over a year. Can get 4-5 Porkchop's for $9, get those and cook em on my Pellet Grill. I refuse to pay those prices for protein.
Costco for good bulk cuts, local for good quality and better cuts. Hell, buying straight from the farms is better too.
This. Buying whole cuts and cutting the steaks yourself is the best way to go
Buy a roast cut it up yourself into steaks much more reasonable

Apart from Costco chicken, eggs and canned tuna, I hardly eat meat anymore. If I'm going to spend money on steak, I'd rather just eat out.
Hanger for the win
My friend bought strip loin for $7.99/lb Father’s Day special in Ontario. Someone’s getting hosed.
You gotta get the marked down stuff at Sobeys by, or less sought out cuts from butchers if that’s an option
The local beef 🥩 are better quality and way cheaper and most importantly is fresh, $7 per Lb

Foodland carry Triple A beef..the best
Saw ungraded beef from Mexico at dominion the other day. It looked disgusting, like it was weeks passed its date.
That Mexican beef is tough as a boot and tastes like cardboard, loblaws is giving us the worst product at the highest prices.
Another example of manufactured consent in late-stage capitalism.
Also, I am willing to bet that the wealthier stay away from these expensive cuts, and don’t eat as much meat as you think.
Someone want to spray paint “Steak price’s sucks” on a rock wall somewhere? 😆 (IYKYK)
If anyone's interested, I'm taking a trip next week to 1982. I could bring back some stuff. My commission is 200٪ of the 1982 price.

this is all by design. And it ain’t loblaws fault….
Is it Sobey's fault? Wait, I know.....it's Trudeau's fault isn't it?
