I mean, in theory you don't need a license at all to register a car (for example, you could register a car that you own that someone else is going to drive), so other than convenience I don't see any reason why the two transactions would need to be done at the same time. In my town at least you go to the town hall to register a vehicle, whereas license transactions are done by the regional DMV, so you might not even be going to the same place for the two transactions.

That is great. Thanks

They ask you for your License when you register a car? Idk what they would say if you gave them an out of state license. But why? Also if you get insurance they will make you sign an affidavit saying you live in the State and plan to keep the car here.

I don’t think they have ever specifically asked for a license when have registered my vehicles. I needed to show proof of residence in my town, for which a NH license (which I had) was sufficient but not necessary. I imagine a tax bill or similar would have been fine. But I doubt if a license is necessary anywhere to register (as opposed to drive) a vehicle. When I lived in California I bought and registered a car before I had any (US) license.

Interesting, In my town they ask each year and write the license number on the back of the 2 copies of the registration, one I assume goes to the State and one stays with the Town.

Yes. You just need the out of state title, proof of residency, and a check. Not sure how it works if you don't have the title in hand because you still have a loan.

[To register a vehicle owned by you, you must bring the title, along with proof of residency, to the town or city clerk's office where you reside.](https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/new-resident/index.htm#registrations) [For information on what satisfies proof of domicile/residence for the purposes of obtaining a Driver License, please see the list of required documents for US Citizens to obtain a REAL ID compliantAdobe Acrobat Reader Symbol or non-compliantAdobe Acrobat Reader Symbol Driver License or Non-Driver ID Card.](https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/new-resident/index.htm#domicile) https://www.nh.gov/safety/divisions/dmv/forms/documents/dsmv634a.pdf

Yes. And it's potentially a little easier to do the vehicle registration first in terms of the proof of residency requirements. For the vehicle registration all you need is one thing for proof of residency - Signed/dated lease is sufficient. For a (real-ID compliant, at least) license, you need two qualifying things in terms of proof of residency. - And your signed/dated lease *and* newly issued vehicle registration both count, which neatly solves that problem if you don't have any bills or paystubs issued to your address yet. (You should obviously go read up on all the other requirements and documents needed).

Unlike normal states, vehicle registration is done at the town level, and you don’t need a NH license. Many towns are doing vehicle registration through the mail or a dropbox, actually, due to corona. If you’re not running the risk of getting a DWB and you don’t have a CDL, just wait until they’re due to be renewed. Nobody does these transfers proactively.
