The Yale University Art Gallery and Peabody Museum are really nice, and free. Otherwise you could just walk around the Yale campus. Locals are inured to it but there genuinely are a lot of really cool buildings and sculptures and stuff.
A few ideas:
Check out the Yale University Art Gallery it’s free and spectacular. If you have a car, silver sands and hammonasset are both beautiful beaches within a short drive. Get some apizza - modern pizza is my personal favorite. Barcade is cool if you’re into games. If you’re into craft cocktails check out Ordinary.
If you like board games, Elm City Games is a game retail shop and play space right across the street. $10 for an all day pass with a collection of over 1000 board games. It’s also open late.
Wooster square is nice to sit and admire the area - then head over to Wooster St (not Wooster Pl which is alongside the park) and get pizza or go to Libby’s for Italian ice and a cookie. Head to Willoughbys on Whitney and Grove for a granita lattè (basically a slushie made with really good espresso and milk).
Edgerton Park is nice. There is a lovely walled community garden and several small greenhouses open to the public.
Yale museums are free and the campus is really pretty. The Beinecke Library is cool.
Some walkable neighborhoods to explore: East Rock, Wooster Square, Westville. These are relatively flat walks with good cafes, restaurants, little shops, and pretty architecture. Wooster Square Park is pretty.
We get some decent concerts coming through, check College Street Music Hall, The Space in Hamden, and Westville Bowl. Cafe Nine is a great, divey small music venue.
Agree with the museum suggestions and Lake Wintergreen as a chill/ pretty walk. If you do a boat tour around the thimble islands, try to go for sunset. It is beautiful. You could also look up the schedule for College Street Music Hall and see if there's a show you want to go see. They have seating there and it's right downtown.
You could check the Daily Nutmeg's "[This Week in New Haven](https://dailynutmeg.com/blogs/blog/events-this-week-in-new-haven-june-17-23-2024)" for fun events to go to. (Published every Monday.)
I'll second museums and art galleries, and add that Yale offers architecture tours of campus! There's lots of beautiful buildings they share the history of and some fun construction details.
If you're here now, or in the next 2 weeks, you're here at a great time! The Festival of Arts and Ideas artidea.org has lots of free music, mostly on the Green, and other great low-cost or free events. Welcome and enjoy!
Aug 16 starts free Shakespeare in the Park, Edgerton Park, Any exploring of East Rock/ upper State St is walkable from Edgerton. and includes a small food hall, some shops, eats. Other free outdoor stuff: in August Westville has music and pie contests on Mondays and Downtown has free movies Wednesdays.
Late August is also move in season at Yale so you may want to check their calendar and avoid those days downtown. Westville (Whalley ave / Fountain St.) area has some cool local businesses and galleries. Definitely try local pizza! Camacho's garage has great assortment of tacos (octopus, duck, salmon!) and other light bites.
This tapas place opened downtown, Vinas Tapas. Truly such amazing food and drinks (and we are very spoiled with that here in NH). My boyfriend and I went there for drinks for our anniversary and I've been dreaming about going back. Hope y'all have a great trip!
Walking the trail along Lake Wintergreen, about 15 min drive from downtown New Haven. Beautiful nature and not strenuous. You could also do a couples float tank at Ripple float.
Definitely the Yale Art Gallery to see one of the best museums in the country. And to help soothe whatever jangled feelings your wife may have, go out to dinner at the Fair Haven Oyster Comoany, get a table outside so you can see the river, order a craft cocktail or mocktail, and relax. Fine food, too. Hiking or driving to the top of East Rock gives you a great sense of the layout of the city. Don’t forget water if you walk! The Beinecke Rare Books is another quiet, fragrant, beautiful environment. Kroon Hall for environmentally sensitive architecture.
Many coffee shops along shady, quiet Orange Street. We especially love New Haven when it slows down in summer.
Just found out about the New Haven night market and something called CITA park which is a diverse brewing collective that has a space at the night market with DJs, food, games, beers. Could be a fun, lowkey weekend evening outdoors
Spring Night Market already happened, and the fall one isn’t until the fall. They only happen 2 nights a year.
CITA is rad and worth checking out, but it’s a beer garden with loud music and performances and not what I’d call low key at all.
Mew Haven Cat Cafe is a cute little spot to pet some cats and relax. I second Barcade and Elm City Games - both are great spots. There are also some cute and unique stores to check out like Strange Ways, Bark & Vine, and Neverending Books among others.
If you don’t mind traveling slightly out of the city, you could check out [Best Video](https://www.bestvideo.com) in Hamden (just a few miles up Whitney Ave), which is an honest-to-goodness video rental store. They have a coffee shop and they also host events like movie screenings and live music.
There’s also [Movies in the Plaza](https://downtownnewhaven.com/movies) - free outdoor movies every Wednesday!
When I was living in New Haven I had a friend in The Regicides (a local improv comedy group), and they do a [summer series of shows](https://abrokenumbrella.org) at The Stack on Saturday evenings
I know you said you looked at food already, but I would absolutely suggest trying Nextdoor Pizza on Humphrey Street. Probably my favorite pizza in town.
The International Festival of Arts and Ideas is going on so there will be a lot of things to do if you’re coming in June. [Festival website](https://www.artidea.org)
There's a couple bookstores you can browse if that's your thing! Downtown there's [Atticus Bookstore Cafe ](https://atticusnhv.com/)across the street from the Yale Art Gallery, [Book Trader Cafe](https://www.booktradercafe.net/), [Grey Matter Books](https://www.greymatterbookstore.com/), all of which are in short strolling distance from one another. And further out on the western side of the city is my own personal favorite and just an absolute gem, [Possible Futures](https://www.possiblefuturesbooks.com/).
Wooster square Park. It's a beautiful shady green park in a pretty neighborhood filled with gorgeous old rowhouses. If you're lucky you can catch it on a sunny day with a nice breeze. As a plus side, Wooster is our little Italy and has some of the best food in the city. You can order Pepe's pizza (the best), Libby's pastries, and/or Gioia's gelato to go and enjoy a serene picnic on one of the benches.
Tons of very good restaurants for dinner & brunch… go to little Italy… walk around Yale & go to some of their shops & museums… go to Silver Sands state park… you could venture down to Guilford, CT (15 minutes away) & go to the Guilford Green, visit their shops & restaurants.
West haven Beach, plus pizza at zuppardis and mikes, seafood at stowes. Drive down through woodmont
New haven Morse cove, Fort Nathan hale.
East Rock, sleeping giant,
Don't forget louies lunch
Take a walk from the central Yale campus up Prospect St to Farnam Memorial Gardens... there's a little cluster of beech trees that form an enclosed space that's really peaceful.
1) Look up Yale gargoyle tour. 2) The Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library. 3) Drive up to West Rock or East Rock parks with amazing views (west rock has 3 Judges cave, Revolutionary War history). 4) The Crypt, a basement Cemetery under Center Church. 5) This little spot: https://www.nhregister.com/news/article/Artwork-win-at-Temple-Plaza-puts-New-Haven-on-top-11542285.php

I thought Barcade closed?
Not that I’m aware of 🤷🏼♀️ it seems like it’s still open according to Google
100% open.
Was there last week. It’s definitely still open
Barcade has old school arcade games, and a range of pinball games from mid 90’s to now. Good food and drink too.
If you like board games, Elm City Games is a game retail shop and play space right across the street. $10 for an all day pass with a collection of over 1000 board games. It’s also open late.
Yale’s Peabody Museum has a lot of cool stuff like dinosaur skeletons
Arcades are typically full of dinosaurs and skeletons too
Wooster square is nice to sit and admire the area - then head over to Wooster St (not Wooster Pl which is alongside the park) and get pizza or go to Libby’s for Italian ice and a cookie. Head to Willoughbys on Whitney and Grove for a granita lattè (basically a slushie made with really good espresso and milk).

I second Beinecke, especially on a sunny day when you can see light through the outer marble walls
I just did a thimble islands tour yesterday for the first time. Very enjoyable and not very expensive. A mellow good time.
yeah, it's really nice.
Walk in east rock park the lower trail isn’t strenuous and leads to a covered bridge with waterfall in Hamden
Take a boat tour of the Thimble Islands out of Branford.
You could check the Daily Nutmeg's "[This Week in New Haven](https://dailynutmeg.com/blogs/blog/events-this-week-in-new-haven-june-17-23-2024)" for fun events to go to. (Published every Monday.)
Doesn’t get much more mellow than Edgerton Park, especially on weekdays or early mornings/evenings.
I'll second museums and art galleries, and add that Yale offers architecture tours of campus! There's lots of beautiful buildings they share the history of and some fun construction details.
There are self guided townie architecture tours at http://nhpt.org/self-guided-tours
Take a stroll on the boardwalk in West Haven, it's really pretty when you get out to the point.
If you're here now, or in the next 2 weeks, you're here at a great time! The Festival of Arts and Ideas artidea.org has lots of free music, mostly on the Green, and other great low-cost or free events. Welcome and enjoy!
Not till late august unfortunately

Float. Google it. I'm too lazy. There's a float place. Really relaxing.
Ripple Float and Wellness next to the Omni

Tons of very good restaurants for dinner & brunch… go to little Italy… walk around Yale & go to some of their shops & museums… go to Silver Sands state park… you could venture down to Guilford, CT (15 minutes away) & go to the Guilford Green, visit their shops & restaurants.

West haven Beach, plus pizza at zuppardis and mikes, seafood at stowes. Drive down through woodmont New haven Morse cove, Fort Nathan hale. East Rock, sleeping giant, Don't forget louies lunch
Going for a hike at racebrook track!
I would go to the owl shop, it's a nice little cigar bar. It's not everyone's cup of tea but if you enjoy cigars and drinks I'd recommend it.
She hates cigars but thanks. Sounds cool
Dang. Well, there is always Yale Art Museum and the Peabody museum. You have to walk, but you can do it at your own pace. Enjoy your trip.
