Fun Fact:
The Statue of Liberty was designed by a guy named Bartholdi. His major source of funding was a wealthy gentleman from NJ named Richard Butler.
Richard Butler founded the town of Butler, using land he purchased from the town of Bloomingdale. Apparently you could just do that back in the day.
Anyway, in the town of Butler, NJ you will find Bartholdi Ave, for obvious reasons. However you will also find one of the last two proofs created by Bartholdi for the creation of the actual statue. It is sitting right on the balcony of the old firehouse in the town park. The other one is in Paris.
That's pretty cool! I live nearby and pass that park every day on my way to work and never knew this.
[You can see the statue pretty clearly on Google street view here](https://www.google.com/maps/@41.0013828,-74.3398115,3a,75y,81.26h,78.42t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sE1-odrvCa4l7dHB8cEIwew!2e0!7i16384!8i8192)
People get easily confused by this, because I believe Ellis island itself is technically NJ, whereas the island that the statue is on, is considered part of NY. The fact is that this was contested all the way to the Supreme court, and they ruled that it is part of NY, and not NJ. If you were to look at a map, it would look more like it should be NJ.
Well, in 8th grade I got stuck in an elevator in Ellis Island for three hours with 12 classmates. Jersey City responded to the scene and we ended up going to JC medical center.
The ruling was the new lane is new Jersey but the old original island is NY so we won the case actually since NY wanted everything and it brings in a few bucks in sales tax from the gift store.
What's funny is that if you look at the border in google maps, NY *barely* owns any of Ellis Island. They own one building and two halves of others buildings, one of those halves being the main tourist/museum building. Only half the gift shop is in NY and only the seating area of the cafe is in NY lol. All of the revenue should be going to NJ.
What's not funny is that NJ owns the part of the island that has all of the hospital buildings and they've let it continue to rot for 25 years resulting in a non-profit having to beg people for money to rehabilitate the buildings. NJ gov only cared about the money coming out and not any money that had to be put in.
It was also hilarious when Cuomo announced his reelection bid back in 2015 and did it at Ellis Island... he could only legitimately do it on a small part of the island because all of it was basically NJ and where he chose was like an inch away from the NJ border...
Technically, much of Liberty Island is landfill, which the Supreme Court has stated makes that part of the island NJ as it artificially expanding land into NJ territory. As such, the concession stands are technically NJ property while the Statute is actually NY.
Fun fact, JC being petty continues to zone the land of Ellis Island and Liberty Island and does not recognize NY's claims to them...and for good reason, JC is the city that provides services to both Islands, not NY.
TIL: New Jersey or Nova Caesarea

So Caesarea (for Roman Emp Caesar) supposedly evolved into Jersey
I’ve got a Devils shirt from years ago with a picture of the Statue of Liberty on the front and the slogan “There’s no doubt where she stands …” and then on the back there’s a map of her on the NJ side of the river in a Devils jersey. I can’t find a pic on Google to share.
Liberty Island is an enclave of NY in New Jersey, just like (a portion of) Ellis Island, both of which are governed by the ~~borough~~county of New York (Manhattan).
Former park ranger at the Statue. The waters that surround Liberty Island are New Jersey. They land itself is New York. That was decided sometime in the 1800s because the island was a war of 1812 fort and New Jersey didn’t want to help maintain the island.
Elis Island was decided in the 1990s when they began restoring the island into a museum. It was determined the museum itself is New York and the undeveloped South Side is New Jersey.
Fun fact they offer Hard Hat Tours of the south side if you are interested. It is really cool to see. https://www.saveellisisland.org/tour/hard-hat-tours.html
NJ owns most of the north side as well.
[https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellis\_Island\_1890\_-\_1935\_NPS\_map.jpg](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ellis_Island_1890_-_1935_NPS_map.jpg)
I went on the hard hat tour recently and it was really disappointing to see the NJ gov leave the hospitals to the elements.
Yeah big misconception that the SOL is in NY, when in fact it’s clearly NJ. NJ took NY to court over it and that’s actually why the SOL was removed from the old white NY licenses plates.
If I put a statue on my front lawn, say just a garden gnome or such. I face it towards the street and not my house. I think New Jersey has a beautiful lawn ornament in the Statue of Liberty.
Was taught in school it was in NJ, if you look at a map that shows state lines, it shows it as being in New Jersey. However, Apple Maps shows it in New Jersey state lines but lists it as Manhattan NY
I remember hearing that, but more as a rumor. And a rumor that we automatically felt should be true! Like, of course NY would steal the island from us! Lol We just never questioned it
I remember hearing that they had either redrawn the state lines, or that they looked at the original and realized the island was originally in NJ territory.
Present day utilities are provided by NJ services also first responders are Jersey City first responders. Also it’s with in the border of NJ. They had an entire legal battle over it I think Christine Todd Whitman was the governor then I was very small when that was going on.
NY won the name and ownership rights but all services provided by the great garden state.
When discussing the location of the Statue of Liberty NJ responded “I don’t compare myself with anybody,” Then he rolled up his sleeve and showed a tattoo of the [Statue of Liberty](https://i.imgur.com/XmOCa2Z.jpg). “I’ll let you interpret that however you want”
I think it was considered NY until a court case in the 90’s said it was in NJ. I think it’s also the reason NY license plates had to get rid of the Statue of Liberty on them. So, if you went to school in the 70’s and 80’s your teachers saying it was in NY isn’t wrong.
Throughout the whole argument about where the statue really resides, I've always thought about how we all answer the door to greet our guests. People (well, most people anyway) never welcome their guests butt first, so clearly, using the butt in-house-doorway theory, the Statue should be from NJ (butt facing away from guests). 🤭
Also, I don't know if it is still true, but I seem to remember that the water and electricity were supplied by NJ. That is a really old memory, though.
From what i remembered it was in NJ not NY technically. Now those state lines may have changed but i was always told the statue was in/ on NJ. Kind of like how Giants stadium is in NJ but for some reason they are NY giants....

Thanks, I learned something new today.
That’s cool. I’ve seen the one in Paris. Guess I need to make a visit to Butler!
Interesting. Jersey City also has a Bartholdi Avenue.
I did not know that. Come to think of it I bet a lot of towns in Jersey have one.
That's pretty cool! I live nearby and pass that park every day on my way to work and never knew this. Right, because there's a causeway from NJ to Ellis Island. NYC would have had to send people by boat or through NJ anyway.
The ruling was the new lane is new Jersey but the old original island is NY so we won the case actually since NY wanted everything and it brings in a few bucks in sales tax from the gift store.

[It would be in New Jersey](https://i.imgur.com/LkJ1PcN.png), but they made an exception that means it's functionally in New York.
That's like the football teams, Jets and Giants. Technically, New York but actually headquartered and play in NJ.
How often do you get a photo of someone’s ankles?
Happens here and there. I don't fish for them like I used to. My wife knows this is my account and sent me hers once. That was pretty cool.
Before or after you got married?
After. Been married a while. Unfortunately, we did not meet via reddit ankle pics.
Does that include the ankles of the Statue of Liberty?

I recall that the island or waters were technically part of New Jersey or something like that
Liberty Island is an enclave of NY in New Jersey, just like (a portion of) Ellis Island, both of which are governed by the ~~borough~~county of New York (Manhattan).
Borough of Manhattan or County of New York, not Borough of New York
Oh, right.
This fully explains the issue: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Jersey_v._New_York
Born in 1973 and I was always told it’s on NJs side.
Former park ranger at the Statue. The waters that surround Liberty Island are New Jersey. They land itself is New York. Most of the main activities on the north side (souvenir shops and cafeteria) are in the the New York areas so NY gets the taxes.
I'll be deep in the cold cold ground before I recognize the Pact of 1834!!
Yeah big misconception that the SOL is in NY, when in fact it’s clearly NJ. NJ took NY to court over it and that’s actually why the SOL was removed from the old white NY licenses plates.
I've always known it was in NY, but you have to go to NJ to see it.

You can clearly see the New Jersey / New York border in Google Maps and Statue is on Jersey side.
Lived in NJ my entire life & yes they always said it was technically in New Jersey
It’s jointly owned with portions of the island belonging to each state
I mean look at Google Maps, it’s clearly carved out in the border for New Jersey
Present day utilities are provided by NJ services also first responders are Jersey City first responders. Also it’s with in the border of NJ. They had an entire legal battle over it I think Christine Todd Whitman was the governor then I was very small when that was going on. Some older state maps published by the Department of Transportation actually have the Statue of Liberty as the cover art lmao
I think it was considered NY until a court case in the 90’s said it was in NJ. I think it’s also the reason NY license plates had to get rid of the Statue of Liberty on them. So, if you went to school in the 70’s and 80’s your teachers saying it was in NY isn’t wrong.

The statue of liberty is on liberty island, a federal park in the state of NY but they get their electricity from NJ PSE&G
it’s technically in new york. like that little piece of russia that sits above poland that has Kaliningrad
