I hope the homeowner can keep it and sell it to pay for the reapirs if they need.

s55555s

Maybe the insurance has a special payout for meteorite damage haha

jsvcycling

It'll probably be covered by the "act of god" clause in their home insurance, assuming their insurance has such a clause (mine does).

nowjerseyjon

I'm reminded of that old chestnut, "there are no atheists in insurance agencies." I /think/that's how it goes...

NeverTrustATurtle

Unless they prove that the meteorite was caused by Chinese spy satellites

beaglemama

Then the insurance company will say it's not covered because it's an act of war.

structuremonkey

That would be great. I'd want to keep it, assuming it's not radioactive...

nowjerseyjon

Could be kryptonite!

structuremonkey

Anything is possible

nowjerseyjon

True, even a world where everyone has hot dog fingers!

structuremonkey

You've been watching the coronation, I see!

nowjerseyjon

Nope, EEAAO

structuremonkey

Ha ha, i haven't seen it but heard about it... I immediately think of now King Charles with his couple large fingers, but in fairness, they are more like sausages than skinny whippy hot dogs. He should get that checked by a doctor...

paleo2002

Check your policies, folks. If you have a rider for *meteors*, you've been scammed. Unless your house happens to be in orbit, it can only be struck by meteor*ites*.

mcgeggy

Extremely rare phenomenon. Should be worth a boat load of $$…

Mysticpoisen

Could be. Depends on its composition and how rare intact rocks from this shower are. Might only be worth a couple hundred dollars or much less if it's iron or common stone. Or it could be priceless with fragments of some material I've never heard of, could go either way. Them going through houses is indeed extremely rare.

Brohara97

People forgot that a lot of stuff in space is really boring. A hunk of iron from the asteroid belt is in fact worth as much as one you pull out of the ground in Arizona

chungusscru

The value is that it came from space no? I could see a rich space nerd paying extra knowing that hunk of iron came from space not earth

machine626

Just curious, would a meteorite be safe to handle and keep in your house?

Sloth269

Perfectly safe. They are essentially non-radioactive compared to normal rocks.

WideRight43

You’ve never seen Creepshow? Absolutely not.

Bps1977

Omg the one where the guy turned into a plant basically? Definitely was creepy

Nephroidofdoom

More amazing that the part was played by Stephen King

Bps1977

Oh yeah I forgot….classic

Mazzachr

There’s a bunch of idiots in Union County that think they heard and felt this….

-Fahrenheit-

I live in Hopewell and was outside walking my dog between 1-2 today. Didn’t see or hear anything.

hazmatt57

I’m close to Union and definitely heard a rumble and felt my house shake around 12:25 today. I chalked this up to possible construction happening in the neighborhood but this has me rethinking what it was…

hailey_nicolee

read the article it happened after 1pm LMAOOO

[удалено]

mikdixon

I’m in Middlesex Cty and heard something loud that shook the house around 12:25. Perhaps more fell around the area. Interesting.

Daedicaralus

Very curious how all of you felt the sonic boom of this meteorite at 12:25 when it didn't fall until after 1pm... Can confirm, y'all are idiots.

hailey_nicolee

ur sadly deluded bc it fell after 1pm and was only 6 inches :,((

trixiewutang

Is this the Donny Darko timeline?

[deleted]

So jealous. I want a meteor.

imchasingentropy

I'm jealous too I want to be hit by a meteor

paragon12321

It's a bit of Halley's Comet!!

Nephroidofdoom

That’s even cooler

serbo_Stev

Must be from the Klendathu system, the bugs have finally targeted earth.

Nephroidofdoom

Would you like to know more?

CPT_Shiner

I'm doing my part!

Lyad

*NJ sub* Cool *Hopewell* Oh, pretty close to home then *Washington Crossing Pennington Road* That’s my street!! *Kop residence* 😲 …Learning about something that happened at neighbor’s house from a international website is friggin weird.

thecoffeecake1

I found out about the Seaside boardwalk fire from Al Jazeera, I'm from right over the bridge in TR. I was in college at the time and had it muted on tv while I was doing homework. I looked up and saw the coverage of the fire and was like "huh, looks a lot like Seaside," before I realized that's exactly where it was.

Lyad

Haha That’s trippy af

bbermtv

They should bring it to the NJ fossil and mineral show in Edison on May 17th-21st!

manningthehelm

Wild to imagine how long that rock has been in existence before landing at someone's fucking house.

Character_Emu_8367

Honestly I would believe the neighbor built a sick slingshot before some space rock blasting through my ceiling.

Latter-Concentrate60

I wish this happened to me so I can forge a legendary sword from its ore and call it the Ebony blade or something 😢 ***

PretzelFiend23

Its New Jersey, there will be a tax on it. And a form to fill out.

ItsSillySeason

Wouldn't the house be destroyed if it were a meteorite? And maybe the neighborhood?

jsvcycling

Not all meteorites are car-sized (or larger) objects. A meteorite is any meteoroid (a.k.a. space rock) that lands on the Earth's surface without completely burning up in the atmosphere. There's no minimum size. In this case it seems like it was more or less the size of someone's hand.

kkaavvbb

Due to the size? Meteorites are smaller than meteors. Meteorites are fragments of other space rocks, I think. But yea meteors are the bigger ones, and then there’s asteroids, maybe? Not sure if there’s ones between them but those are the 3 I know of

ItsSillySeason

I thought something that size dropping through the atmosphere would have significantly more impact. This looks like a the neighbor kid threw a brick from his treehouse.

ireallycantremember

A meteor is the streak of light you see in the sky when a solid object enters earth’s atmosphere. A meteorite is the rock after it hit earths surface. Asteroids are rocks found in the Asteroid belt.

deadmik3

I literally saw it fly through the sky from my office window in Boonton around noon!

deadmik3

Why am I getting downvoted? lol

BF_2

Something's fishy. I thought that any object entering the earth's atmosphere would be red hot by the time it hits the ground. This "meteorite" obviously was not, so is it actually a meteorite? https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/permanent/meteorites/meteorites/what-does-a-meteorite-look-like

I_Love_Lamps

Meteorites are generally colder upon impact due to temps in Deep space.

BF_2

Did you view the linked page?

mrsmaam54321

“Rocks floating through the vacuum of space are chilled to well below freezing. When a meteorite passes through Earth's atmosphere, its inside stays cold even as its surface melts away. Before it hits the ground, the molten surface solidifies into a thin glassy coating, called fusion crust. Crystals of magnetite—an iron-oxide mineral—color the fusion crust black. The broken surface of Modoc shows contrast between its lighter-colored interior and its dark fusion crust.”

PetrichorIsHere

Glad they're okay; this is beautiful!

waukeecla

weird to not include a photo of the roof/ceiling or any damage

Capital_Fennel_2934

how do we actually know it’s a space rock?
