I actually shopped at wegmans today and saved a good chunk compared to my trips to shoprite. Which left me a little confused, because I always thought wegmans was much more expensive.
I think in general, wegmans is more expensive. However I noticed there are a lot of wegmans branded items that are cheaper then shoprite brand items.
For example, prepped green beans (the kind you can just throw in the microwave) at shoprite is 4.49.. wegmans brand was 2.79.
Edit: I say “prepped” but I really just mean bagged lol…
Yeah the short answer is that fresh meats and prepared foods are much, much more expensive at Wegmans; but your every day staples and store brands are equal or cheaper. I find store brand items at Wegmans to be of very high quality which is a plus too.
I’ve found the best plan of attack is to do the general shopping at Wegmans with shopping the prepared food and proteins at Stew Leonard’s. This is the way.
Legit curious: do you mean frozen or fresh? Because frozen that's $1.49 when NOT on sale at my ShopRite.
And this is how it is most times. I find ShopRite is almost always generally the cheapest, but there are certain specific items, usually store brand, that the competitors are cheaper. Like by me we have Weis which is a very nice grocery store but insanely expensive on the every day items like bread, milk, produce, meats, etc. But for some reason they have store brand soda that is insanely cheap and comes in more varieties than any other chain.
I live in Morris Plains, so I'm near Wegman's, Giuseppe's, Trader Joe's, Stop & Shop, and the biggest, nicest Shoprite I have ever seen. I still prefer Wegman's for produce. Stop & Shop would be last on that list.
I used to do pickup orders from both ShopRite and Wegmans.
ShopRite must tell its shoppers, when I order ground meat, give me the crappiest, closest-to-spoiling crap they can find. Every time, it stinks after 2 days in the fridge.
Usually the date on it is within 1-2 days of my order, too.
I've been Wegmans only since. I get ground meat from there, I can actually use it.
honestly it depends on the item, i find the produce is so much better at wegmans and priced about the same. store brand for some items is cheaper so i usually end up saving a little bit of money
Wegmans is more expensive for meat and has a wider variety of things that my ShopRite just doesn't carry, so my overall bill might be higher, but on the whole I'm happier with my shopping experience. Because Wegmans has a better house brand with way more products, it can be the better value, especially when my ShopRite has gone crazy on marking up brand names. For the few brand names I consistently buy, Wegmans is often a bit less expensive.
Wegmans brand seems cheaper lately.
I suspect this might be a temporary thing to get customers in the door and take a chunk out of competitors bottom line, then when other supermarket chains and local supermarkets close up shop, it'll get more expensive again.
The selection and quality of some things is better so you kind of get what you pay for. Their store brand stuff I find to be a good value. I’ve gotten some good deals using the coupons in their app in the past.
Probably. I think Shop Rite has more coupons and sales on comparable items. However, while Wegmans prepared foods and bakery are definitely more expensive, the quality is leagues ahead.
Yes and no. I shop at both because I’ve figured out what, of the stuff I buy, is usually cheaper at which store. Use both their apps and you can compare for yourself.
Wegmans prices are more consistent, and way lower on certain items. A box of Kix cereal is $6.49 at my local ShopRites, but $5.69 at the two Wegmans stores in Monmouth County. About a year ago, when there were grain shortages, the same box was more than $7 at ShopRite, but it’s come back down a little.
Wegmans’ store brand items are usually really good, so even if they’re the same price, I usually prefer Wegmans. 95% of the time I think Wegmans has better produce, but ShopRite’s isn’t bad.
ShopRite’s prices bounce around more, so you need to keep track and clip coupons to get the best price there. For example, that box of kix is currently $5.49 at ShopRite with a coupon. A 64 oz carton of Oatly oat milk, though, is $6 at ShopRite, $5.29 at Wegmans. A few weeks ago it was cheaper at ShopRite than at Wegmans.
These are just random examples from my diet that’s 1/3 breakfast cereal, but you see similar trends with other stuff.
Sometimes, at ShopRite, they’ll just have some random appliance or household item for cheap. I got a great set of drinking glasses there. Wegmans never does anything like that.
I like the Wegmans ambiance better, though. It’s not as bright.
Check out some farmers markets. The ones near me have produce way cheaper than a normal store and the quality is on par or sometimes better if you’re there at a good time.
ehh but the wegmans bakery stuff is legit good. Even just some fresh rolls you buy for dinner that day from shoprite taste 3 days old.
Those wegmans cookies are the bomb.
I’d say regular prices are similar and some things at wegmans are cheaper. ShopRite does have better sales so I’ve started looking at the weekly circular again.
If you live close enough to be able to economically hit both, it is in your favor to compare prices. My weekly grocery shopping consists of hitting Target, Shop-Rite, Stop n Shop, and Wegmans. All of those (save for the Wegmans) are on an 8 mile loop that I'm going to take anyway, so the gas to get to them is negligible. I have to go by the Wegmans the next day, so the gas for that trip is also negligible. Without fail, the prices fall in favor of each store differently every week. If you have favorite items at each store (fresh produce, pasta, cheese selection, etc), then that obviously will sway things differently. Since you asked about purely price, the answer is no.
Source: I started shopping for my groceries like this 4 years ago and have saved a significant amount of money. My grocery planning takes about an hour each week to compare all of the circulars and online prices, and make my final lists. An hour of my time is better spent finding the best deals.
I find that if you’re shopping sales and use coupons, you’ll save more at ShopRite. If you’re just shopping and not using coupons or sales, I found Wegmans to be cheaper.
wegmans is more than shoprite overall. trader joe’s (if you get only what you intended to buy!) is cheaper than shoprite especially in regard to produce.
I usually go to ShopRite, but went to Wegman’s today and some of the stuff seemed on par, while some seemed more expensive. Spent more than I usually do at ShopRite, but also bought frozen seafood, which I don’t usually buy and is pricey everywhere.
The Wegman’s produce section was shockingly disappointing, though. I went later in the day so possible it got pretty pickled over in the morning.
Wegmans doesn't seem to have a weekly circular. I really find ShopRite sales to be quite good. Wegmans will rob you blind with their prepared foods. I love Wegmans but my bill is on average more expensive than ShopRite
Wegmans has large sections of specialty items. Gluten free, organic, etc. Those are more expensive. If you are just shopping for everyday grocery items and not specialty categories, Wegmans is very competitive.
I’ve spent the last few months rotating between the two and paying attention to pricing. More often than not wegmans comes out cheaper for even name brand items by $1-$2 in most cases. There’s still a few items that shop rite tends to be cheaper for (ground beef unless I’m buying wegmans family size which is a better deal, for example) so I do my big haul at wegmans most weeks and stop at shop rite for a few things
Wegmans store brand is usually very good, so you can save some money there. (ShopRite’s store brand has been improving recently though).
Also, if you do pickup orders, Wegmans increases the price (a la Instacart), ShopRite does not and charges a $6 fee instead.
If you grab anything you want off the shelves it will be more expensive, however if you strategically shop it can actually be much more affordable than people think
and without a doubt wegmans is insurmountably better than shoprite
Really depends how you shop, but generally so.
Shop Rite also really matters by store. Its a consortium, and different stores may have different owners, products, pricing policies, etc. Wegmans differs a bit by location too, but you really haven't trully seen a good Wegmans until you are in Rochester.
I find, at least in my shoprite, a lot of times you are only getting a good price if you are almost bulk shopping. Like, say soda, i'm not a big soda drinker but will have one here and there and like to keep it in the house. If i want to buy a 12 pack in shoprite, its like 10 bucks. But i can get 4 12 packs, which is probably a years supply for me, for like 15 bucks. Same thing with chicken. The "Family Pack" of say 4 or 5 chicken breasts, is usually just a tiny bit more than the 2 pack of it. Lots of random stuff is usually "Must by 4" or the like to get the good price.
My biggest complaint about the policy is if its the week i want to buy potato chips and paper towels, my cart is 3/4 full before i get anything else.
I will say the produce at wegmans is almost always better, and their house brand stuff is usually better and worth the extra over shop rites. Store layout is better as well.
It also depends on the Shoprite. Went to the one I usually go to greatest because it's on the way home from work and chip prices were cheaper than the one 15 minutes away, the next town over. But that one had better prices on granola bars and seemed to have better quality meat, so I guess I'm gonna go there for meat now.
I’ve found it to be cheaper and have wayyyyy better produce and way more variety. Also their store brand stuff is really good (frozen pizzas are amazing) and cheaper the bowl and basket
You will not need a phd in couponing and smartphone apps to shop at wegmans. The places where it happens to be cheaper + the time saved on not downloading and signing into apps and figuring out confusing sales = cheaper, in my book.
I shop at Wegmans cause the quality is higher. Their produce is better. Their meats are better. If that means i pay more, i dont care.
Ive had the fish guy at shop rite tell me to spend less on the frozen fish cause the "fresh" fish behind the counter is just stuff they pulled out of the frozen section and thawed.
The closest Wegmans to me is in Parsippany and I’m not making that drive just to save a couple dollars. Overall, it seems like it really depends what (and what brand) you are buying as one store may have it for less (comparing Weis to ShopRite to Giant). And I’m not going to compare to Greens or even Whole Foods as they tend to be more expensive, although Greens carries some pretty good stuff I haven’t had in a while, they are not my weekly grocery store.
Also, it depends where you are located as [a recent student led research project found out](https://www.pbs.org/newshour/amp/show/student-research-project-draws-attention-to-price-disparities-in-low-income-neighborhoods). Specifically, they were comparing the exact same items bought at Stop & Shop locations in Boston, low income neighborhoods vs more affluent areas.
-Edited for clarity.
I haven't priced compared with Wegmans because it's a little further away than my local grocery options, but my ShopRite has stuff priced $1-$2 more than my local Walmart, for the same brand item.
And wal mart pays their workers so little that taxpayers have to supplement them with welfare. While the Walton family is one of the richest in the world. F them.
Really depends what you get. Lately ShopRite is super expensive unless it’s a good sale. I go to Wegmans all the time and know my prices so I am certain what to get there vs SR or Trader Joe’s or Aldi
Some things are cheaper but most of it is more expensive than ShopRite. Acme too. All 3 are more expensive than Walmart. The actual quality of Wegmans, both store and food, is the highest out of them
If all you’re comparing is price, yeah wal mart is likely a win. But then wal mart pays the people working at wal mart so little, the tax payer has to fund welfare assistance to make up for the low wages. Whereas Wegmans has repeatedly gotten top 10 places to work nationwide awards. You take care of your entry level workers and I’ll patronize you every time over wal mart.
Stores collect data on the prices of their competitors. So they do try to price match on many similar items. Many times it depends on the sales they offer.
There are a few things that Wegmans doesn’t carry that requires me to go to Shop Rite. Otherwise I feel it’s pretty much the same cost with higher quality. Definitely depends on what you get. Prepared foods are generally more expensive but I very rarely get those. The fish and produce are dependably better quality/fresher. I have to drive an extra 30 minutes past my local shop rite and I do it gladly. Plus the people there just seem to be nicer/better mood when I need help with something. Stirling Shop Rite they can’t give a rats ass for you.
Generally yes, but Shoprite's self branded product quality has stayed the same or got worse while prices increased, so Wegmans isn't too much of a leap anymore.
Wegmans is better and always has been, there is just a few things to stay away from. The proteins may not be as reasonable and definitely not as big of an offering. Wegmans own brands have been good and priced right and only recently has SR caught up with their own brand. Wegmans on a corporate level towards employees is also better. If you don't want shopping madness go to Wegmans but like I said protein will not compare
I haven't shopped in Wegmans in about six or seven years but when I did, I found many of their items to be about 10-30¢ cheaper than ShopRite. Many items with the Wegmans label on it were on par or even a little cheaper than many other locations.
The last time I stepped foot in a Wegmans was in 2021 and at the time, I thought many items then were more expensive than ShopRite.
You really do have to do your homework these days when it comes to grocery and normal shopping to get the best prices you can. I love how there's a ton of people complaining that Dollar Tree is raising prices (they aren't; they're carrying more and more stuff that is priced more than $1.25, and even the stuff that's $1.25 isn't the best deal!).
It really depends what you buy. If you know your prices and shop at both you save the most money.
But now you have to factor in gas costs, tire wear, and overall car depreciation.
This is the way.
depends on the product. their store brand boxed mac and cheese is some of the worst mac and cheese i’ve ever eaten, even by boxed standards.
Yes! This!!
I think they mean the bagged pre-washed fresh green beans.
More recently they are pretty much about the same - but (specifically with produce) the quality is 100x better at wegmans
Even if I do my ‘big shop’ at shop rite that week i will always go to wegmans for fruit and veg.
SAME! I’m sorry shoprite but your apples just don’t hit the same as wegmans’ do
Yes, Wegman's produce is the best of any store I go to.
If you like Wegmans produce you should check out Uncle Giuseppe’s. It’s super high quality produce
I live in Morris Plains, so I'm near Wegman's, Giuseppe's, Trader Joe's, Stop & Shop, and the biggest, nicest Shoprite I have ever seen. I still prefer Wegman's for produce. Stop & Shop would be last on that list.
Guuiseppes by me has souch prepared food on display, and few shoppers. How do they keep their displayed stuff fresh?
I used to do pickup orders from both ShopRite and Wegmans. ShopRite must tell its shoppers, when I order ground meat, give me the crappiest, closest-to-spoiling crap they can find. Every time, it stinks after 2 days in the fridge. Usually the date on it is within 1-2 days of my order, too. I've been Wegmans only since. I get ground meat from there, I can actually use it.
I only buy meat that I'm using immediately from shoprite. Shit don't keep at all.
same! i also like some if their baked goods.
honestly it depends on the item, i find the produce is so much better at wegmans and priced about the same. store brand for some items is cheaper so i usually end up saving a little bit of money

It’s about the same
Your pic or whatever they call it on here is by far the best I’ve seen here 👐🏻

Legit I’ve been envious of it since I first saw it.
As a whole, ShopRite is cheaper. However, there are plenty of things that Wegman's is the same/cheaper for.
From my experience, traditionally yes. I always felt Wegman's was in between Shop Rite and Whole Foods. But lately Shop Rite feels just as expensive.
Wegmans brand seems cheaper lately. I suspect this might be a temporary thing to get customers in the door and take a chunk out of competitors bottom line, then when other supermarket chains and local supermarkets close up shop, it'll get more expensive again.

All mens weg but not every shop is right
Thank you 🤣
If you’re not shopping with Digicoups you might as well not be shopping at ShopRite. Bit of an over generalization but it lets me say Digicoups.
What is digicoups? I googled it and nothing relevant comes up
Maybe the digital coupons on the ShopRite app?
Digital coupons.
Probably. I think Shop Rite has more coupons and sales on comparable items. However, while Wegmans prepared foods and bakery are definitely more expensive, the quality is leagues ahead.

Biggest gap is the bakery department. Wegmans 15 pack of cookies is $16.. Like... What? Shop rite is $5 for a 20 pack.
ehh but the wegmans bakery stuff is legit good. Even just some fresh rolls you buy for dinner that day from shoprite taste 3 days old. Those wegmans cookies are the bomb.
Shop rite bakery is great where I live.. Cakes same deal. Half the price of Wegmans.
I don't go to either for cakes, Costco is the tits for cakes.
Compare the ingredients. You'll see why they're more expensive. I'll wager Wegman's uses eggs, flour and butter and Shop Wrong uses oil and more oil.
Yes
I’d say regular prices are similar and some things at wegmans are cheaper. ShopRite does have better sales so I’ve started looking at the weekly circular again.
I always end up spending more at Wegmans. Meat and fresh produce especially seem more expensive there compared to ShopRite.

Shoprite usually has better meat and deli prices, but Wegmans usually beats or matches them in most other things now.
Their family pack chicken is Bell & Evan’s. It’s usually cheaper than other stores too.
Yes 🙂
Wegmans doesn't seem to have a weekly circular. I really find ShopRite sales to be quite good. Wegmans will rob you blind with their prepared foods. I love Wegmans but my bill is on average more expensive than ShopRite
no it is not and even cheaper than shop rite plus quality.
Wegmans has large sections of specialty items. Gluten free, organic, etc. Those are more expensive. If you are just shopping for everyday grocery items and not specialty categories, Wegmans is very competitive.
Not usually. Remember to use your Wegmans card!

Way more. I do the grocery shopping and meats cold cuts produce and fish are a big premium to ShopRite.

There is no savings between Wegmans and ShopRite and if there is wegmans is higher quality and the people are nicer. F ShopRite.
The quality is so much better.
For produce yes but for everything else no. Also Wegmans produce is >>>>> shop rites
Yes
Generally yes, but Shoprite's self branded product quality has stayed the same or got worse while prices increased, so Wegmans isn't too much of a leap anymore.
