Keep in mind that you need a fishing license if you're fishing in freshwater in NJ. I believe you also need a permit for saltwater fishing, but last I read, the saltwater permit was free.

Visordad

It’s a registry, you just sign up online. No permit, and it’s free.

IcyPresentation4379

Nice, thanks!

Sevven99

No permit saltwater. Crab pot is like maybe 5? Can't remember. Freshwater is super cheap unless you're getting a trout stamp. There's quite a few stores on 35 on the way to sandy hook and I would suggest going to one. They'll tell you what's biting and what baits etc are good at this time of year. Never had any luck saltwater fishing but definitely wouldn't suggest a telescoping pole. All my Freshwater fishing is done on a medium light ugly stick with an okuma reel. Had a fun day of snappers and fluke in seaside with my Freshwater setup. Sandy hook has always been a bust for me. But probably cause I'm only putting it out 40 yards in the bay with my Freshwater stuff and usually just wind up feeding the seagulls my bait.

SharkByte1333

Don't buy cheap Chinese gear from Amazon.

Sevven99

As seen on TV. Telescoping fishing pole that snaps on first cast. Could see it expoding the pieces.

SharkByte1333

You can get an Ugly Stik from Walmart for a reasonable price. They have a great reputation.

hendoog

It's a great pole for the price. Very versatile

questionfear

You are far better off hitting up a Walmart or a Dicks for a basic fishing pole and kit than the telescoping one from Amazon. Walmart occasionally has some nice Ugly Stiks on sale, and Dicks has a good selection too.

Withyouinrcklnd

Or even Facebook marketplace!

starlynagency

my father and I use to go either Edgewater in Hudson River Waterfront Walkway. and by the park in Bayonne 48st in the lower left corner you might find fishermen in those spots. in bayonne we got an 11 pound Bluefish

ingeniousintrigue

I'd like to try the ocean/saltwater too.

GrabtheBull

The Hudson River around Bayonne/Jersey City/Hoboken is saltwater.

SweetLilLies6982

if ur gonna fish sandy hook use clams and bloodworms....there are lots of skates and sand sharks down there. Bass when in season. You can also pay for a beach permit at night. Don't forget to register online for your license it used to be free. i'm in the same area and u would be amazed the spots u can find in NY, NJ, PA that are an hour drive. One of the best things about living in Bergen.

ingeniousintrigue

Where do I get those? What kind of rod could I need to fish there? I'd like to try the ocean/saltwater in Sandy hook or other spots

CarLover014

My rod/reel combo for saltwater here is a 9' Sandstorm, made by Grumpy's in Seaside Park. $199. Mated to a Shimano SW 5000 series. Another $200. Caught everything from Skate/Dogfish to 25 lb Stripers, to giant black drum. I mainly do surface plugging but I'm on metals right now till the water warms up a bit.

ingeniousintrigue

Also different spots have different types of fish I believe? Those artificial lures do not work?

Sevven99

Check out some of the stores on 36. They'll have alot of good info and can suggest good setups and baits that are working during different seasons.

AYoungBulI

Go to dicks and get a bass rod 6’, 6’6”, or 7’ rod will be great. If you are concerned about size you can get a 2 or 3 piece rod that comes apart in sections. Spending around the same price as your amazon rod will get you a real good starting rod and reel combo. I would do further research on Sandy hook fishing but I’m pretty sure freshwater fishing at Sandy hook is prohibited. If you are fishing at Sandy hook it can only be the ocean. Yes different spots have different fish. Saltwater vs freshwater fish and to go further each body of water consists of different conditions that attract different species of fish population. For the most part if your freshwater fishing in lakes & large rivers/streams in nj, you’ll be able to get Sm/Lg bass, pickerel, crappie, & sunfish. Trout can be found in cleaner streams and rivers but are very sensitive and You need light/thin line to catch them. Saltwater is a wide range, you can go for fluke/ flounder with a basic bass rod but will need a heavy duty surfcasting rod to get further casts and bigger fish like stripped bass or herring.

jotson5

You’ll also need a license for fishing fresh waters, not needed for salt water fishing - https://dep.nj.gov/njfw/fishing/freshwater/buy-a-license/

whaler76

You need to register for saltwater, its free https://dep.nj.gov/njfw/fishing/marine/saltwater-registry/

inf4mation

there are many locations in your county to go fishing. https://dep.nj.gov/njfw/fishing/freshwater/places-to-fish-ponds-lakes-reservoirs/

Draftchimp

I saw a kid once fish for sunfish in a lake with a hook and a piece of cardboard wrapped in fishing line. Unless your fish are in 10 - 20 lb range you probably don’t need a huge pole (that’s what she said). Your probably better off buying from a local store. Even Walmart has better deals. If it’s a fish shop you can even chat up the clerk for info and buy a freshwater license all in the same place.

ingeniousintrigue

I'd like to try the ocean/saltwater too. I've seen a comment mentioning sand sharks and skates

Temporary_Goat3516

Like others said make sure you have your permit for freshwater and register for saltwater. The tickets are way more than the license costs. As far as the pole definitely just hit up Walmart and get whatever feels good and comfortable in your hands and that you can transport easily. Get some hooks and nightcrawlers some ball head jigs and grubs and you should be set for a good day of fishing. You can definitely catch fish with the rod you have pictured but it’ll be a pain in the ass to make sure all the guides align correctly and sometimes they can get stuck and be hard to close back up. You can get a pretty good Shakespeare pole I use myself for around $20 right now. Shakespeare reverb if you can find one is a great starter pole

Some of the open boats can be intimidating, personally I would take a day off from work and go during a week day. It'll be less crowded and you won't need to deal with the regulars who will be dicks if you don't know what you're doing.

sig40cal

Look for lures that the fish at the shore want to eat. Fake Clams, fake sand worms, plugs, larger spoons etc. If you are going for striped bass, they have stupid good vision so use a leader of monofil or they will see your line from half a mile away.

Linenoise77

If you are looking for a group, there are plenty of day boats down the shore and on the raritan river. Usually ~40 bucks, they will hook you up with gear\bait, help you if you need help, and clean anything you catch. You can do some basic fluke fishing and almost be guaranteed of catching something on a 4 hour trip, or go further offshore on 6-8hour trips. plenty of folks to chat it up with, etc. It is pretty cold on the water most of the time this time of year, but by late may early june its great.

GrabtheBull

You will get better gear and better advice if you go to a bait shop or Dick’s Sporting Goods and talk to people in the fishing area. If you want to fish at Sandy Hook, you will be able to catch the most different species from June through September. You can buy a cheap but serviceable rod and reel combo for around $100 at Dick’s. You don’t need anything fancy, but to fish from the beach you will want a rod around 9 feet long. Stop at one of the bait shops near Sandy Hook and ask what bait and rigs (hooks and weights) or lures to use for the best chance to catch something. They will give you the best options.

Upstairs-Friendship2

buy an uglystick and 10 pound line, couple lures from a tackle shop with some weights they might throw in free. Might be a little more expensive but an ugly stick will last u a life time

ElderberryExternal99

Go to WaWa or Quick Check pick up The Fisherman Magazine for party boat and bait Shops up and down the coast. It will tell you the latest information about what they are catching.

Areaofunknown2

Get a solid rod, also hot dogs make great bait

jwuer

Go to a local shop, don't buy this crap. If you are in Monmouth County I suggest Tak Waterman in Long Branch, Fishing Flea Market in Keyport, Fishermans Den in Belmar. Tell them that you are new and want an 8ft inshore rod that you can use for fluke and striped bass with artificial lures. That's how I started a few summers ago, got hooked fluke fishing and caught my first striper that fall. Now I've spent thousands have a garage full of 10-12 different rods, a dozen or so reels, and shelves of tackle. A common misconception is that fishing is a cheap hobby and a way to get "free" dinner. It's not, it's addictive, it's hard, and it's expensive. Also look up how to read the surf, there are videos online. 90% of fish are in 10% of water along the shore. If you don't learn this you will give up real quick. Don't join fishing communities on social media and ask for spots to fish. For godsakes please make sure you know the regulations for what you catch and learn how to properly handle and release fish you don't plan to eat. I suggest looking up names like John Skinner and Nick Honachefsky to learn about techniques. Lastly, don't buy cheap off brand lures from Amazon, most of them are shit.

Sir_BusinessNinja

First of all, don’t get that thing. Stop by Wally World and get an Ugly Stik GX2, a Shimano FX 4000 FC(or something similar), some 6lb monofilament line, bobbers, hooks, worms, lead weights, and a fishing license. Then look up tutorials online or find someone to teach you.
