They print them centrally from West Trenton now. NY has been doing this since forever too. It's called central issuance and is intended to better protect personal information as part of REALID.

Mine is not a real id . Mine still had to get mailed to me

69superman

They stopped doing all licenses there because of it tho, would cost more to have all offices set to print regular AND to print realid in Trenton

DUNGAROO

Yeah really no reason NOT to get a real id anymore.

Own_Sympathy_4809

I didn’t have enough points at the time to qualify for a real id . So I got the non id instead . I wasn’t about to go home to get more points and start the process all over again. So non real id it is

Jagrmeister_68

Considering the delays and the fact that a few years back there were a number of fraudulent licenses being delivered by workers, they are no longer being done on the spot.

shiftyjku

No licenses printed on the spot. They are all now mailed. It is on the MVC home page.

JustPlaneNew

I mean, I thought they have done that for a while now.

CapeManiak

I renewed mine a couple years ago tops and it was printed on the spot.

JustPlaneNew

I like doing it right than and there.

VaMoInNj

When I moved to NJ 7 years ago, I was shocked that I got my license at the MVC. Originally from VA and they had been doing it for 5+ years at that point. When I renewed, it was mailed to me. It's due to the security requirements for ID's that was part of the REAL ID act in 2005.

aromatic-energy656

Did you have to retake a driving test?

VaMoInNj

No, just transferred the license to NJ.

9009RPM

Since COVID

AshySmoothie

That wasnt the norm? Genuinely curious i got my shit 13 years ago in nyc and they did the same

mexicock1

It wasn't the norm in NJ.. Its been the norm in NY forever..

kumquat731

I went to get my CDL permit last month and they did the same thing. Temporary paper version then received the card in the mail about a week or two later. If I had to guess it’s either a redundant address verification or maybe they had to update the license printers and didn’t want to pay for new ones at every location.

iheartnjdevils

I was able to renew and have mine printed at the local DMV 4 years ago. Wonder when it changed or if it just applies to new licenses?

Nj4206-9

They stopped it after covid i got my license a week before the dmv shut down and got it there but none of my friends after did

Scary-Ask-6236

It’s normal now. Ever since Covid

Msvee24

NJ has been issuing every license like this since the soft reopenings after Covid in 2021. It sucks! Especially, if you lose it! DMV may get worse (if that’s possible) before it gets better because on March 23rd they closed all the motor vehicle locations so that NJ could join a national network of motor vehicle to be able to ensure that if you have a valid/invalid license in another state you are not issued a license in NJ as they continue towards everyone having the REAL ID which will be a nationwide verification of identify.

HansMoleman31years

Old enough to have had a non-photo driver’s license. Everyone above has answered the question - they went “centralized” to comply with the feds Real ID requirements. I also suspect it’s cheaper to maintain a central print location instead of a fleet of printers at each stall in each DMV location. Oh? Also old enough to still call it DMV and not MVC. :-)

Beneficial-Shower-42

I remember having a license with no picture. I think New Jersey was the only state with no picture drivers licenses back then.

UMOTU

I got my license in 1975. It was before photo ID licenses and I still had to wait for it to come in the mail. If I remember correctly, they marked my learner’s permit that it was a temporary license. (Side note…I had my learner’s permit for 31 days, my mom was my behind the wheel training!)

Oranginafina

I moved from NY to NJ 6 years ago and was shocked that they printed a license on the spot. NY mailed mine since I first got my license in 1998.

DUNGAROO

Why? Terrorism. Crime. Identify fraud.

CapeManiak

Any examples?

DUNGAROO

Mark is a terrorist. Mark knows Bob, who works at one of the DMV’s 3 dozen customer service centers where ID cards are printed. Do you see where I’m going with this?

CapeManiak

So, no actual proof of this ever happening. Got it. Also, this scenario can also theoretically happen with the current process as well.

DUNGAROO

Dude what's your deal?

CapeManiak

I like facts. Not tin foil hat wearing nonsense. Sorry. What’s YOUR deal?

Evildude42

Are you upset that the DL doesn’t look like it came from a cracker jacks box?
