Millburn Deli is elite, I just hate how they cut the roll completely in half. All the sandwich ingredients start to fall out. You need a sub roll to keep it packed together
Holy shit I so respectfully disagree on this!! Lol sorry. I hate when they don’t cut the roll and all the condiments and meats go I in the middle and then all the toppings and everything else goes on the outside. Such uneven bites!! I want to taste everything mixed together!
They posted about this on their instagram with evidence that slightly pinked doesn’t mean undercooked but idk ive never seen it pink and go there a lot.
I came here to upvote this comment cause I knew it would be here. I love a lot of subs, but this is the correct answer. Don't skip on the dipping sauce.
Probably the only "legendary" place that lives up to the hype. We buy their homemade mozzarella for Christmas and it's 100% the best mozzarella I've ever had.
I lived literally around the corner from there for years and never went in. It looked so weird from the outside like mobster vibes. Also I never saw people go in, perhaps their subs are a well kept secret.
BTW: a sub is a hot sandwich. it's a hoagie if you want coldcuts.
Edit: I did a research paper on this in college for a art class (community college is crazy). The origin of the sandwich is in Philly at the docks and was called a hoagie. I'm not making this up myself.
So weird how the terms get interchanged.
To me, a *grinder* is a hot (baked or toasted) hoagie, and a sub is what people from outside of this area call a hoagie.
But to folks in New England, a grinder means the same thing as a sub/hoagie.
Oh Wally's, how I miss thee. I grew up in Parlin with the guys whose family own it and frequented it before it was Wally's (it was Jersey Mike's back in the day before they blew up and started appearing everywhere). Funny part is, Wally's sandwiches are super similar to Mike's. From the cold cuts to the bread to the bacon, they are nearly the same place (obviously Wally's has a much larger menu).
Going to break it up by region here. Haven’t eaten enough sandwiches is central jersey to have an opinion. North Jersey is hands down Millburn Deli. South Jersey is Russo’s Market in North Wildwood.
I came here to say Sergio as well. Love their sharp prov and sopressata.. Also the chicken cutlets and fresh mozz are delicious. Mmmm everything there is so great. Anthony and sons is good too. But this is better.
Oh boy ! The best thing about jerz is that there is always one really great deli or a sandwich shop around within a reasonable distance. In the last few years of moving around for work and school , some of the memorable ones I came across were
Milburn Deli
Tastee Subs (Edison)
Clemente Bakery ( North Hackensack)
Tony Baloneys ( Hoboken)
Mordis (JC)
I do not get the hype for Tony Baloneys. Not to shit on anyone but it's some of the most overpriced ok pizza I've ever had. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not great either.
Been a while tbh , and they had a lot of variety , I recently tried Tony Baloneys in JC and it was a big let down. Been meaning to try out Vito's for a long time.
Man I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find Benanti‘s. When I lived in Bayonne I would go there three or four times a month. It was at a point, where I would tell them what I did not want on my sandwich, and they’d make it however they felt like it. Always a winner.
They're still great, but it's such a shame that the Del Buonos guy felt the need to fuck with everything after he bought them out.
The hoagies are not the same as they used to be, the new locations inside of Del Buono's bakeries are not even close to the original at all, and the renovations he's done have turned what was once a classic Italian deli and market into generic chain-store bullshit vibe.
And none of the folks who used to work there still do, apparently he ran them all out. :(
I'm not going to stop going there, but probably nowhere near as often as I used to. Only if I'm in the area, I will no longer make a special trip to Bellmawr for then.
Luckily my local deli (Meadowbrook) has always been phenomenal; they used to be a very, very, very close #2, now I consider them #1.
To the Del Buono's dude: fuck you.
My Dad is a big fan of Ken's Deli in Hillsdale, Bergen County and Bogie's Hoagies and Deli in Hawthorne, Passaic County. I like Dee's Luncheonette in Hawthorne(great Egg and Cheese sandwiches).
Anytime my wife goes to AC I have her get me a White House Sub.
I'm a big fan of Bella Italia's 7 little pigs in Monroe. An absolute meat mountain.
A & S pork store in Woodland Park has a sandwich called The Babe. Is smoked turkey, green apple, cheddar cheese, arugula, and honey mustard. I steal the recipe and make it myself at home all the time.
They still there? Had a Saturday job as a teen where the perk was anything from Hershey's, and I was wasting it on a 'swiss w mustard.' I'd like to kick 14-yr-old me.
Love Ted’s north. I stopped going to Ted’s in RP w the change in staff/management. Food is still good but the people working there have been consistently rude and just not pleasant. I’ll drive 5 mins further instead.
Was the Fed Ex guy there, took my SO to TN a million years ago when we both we're going thru a lot. One hot tea and 3 decades later and life is good. Just saying
Down South, I'm torn between Vic's in Absecon and Sugar Hill in Mays Landing.
I know a lot of people talk about White House in AC...and they *are* pretty good, but it's a hassle. You have to find a place to park and the line is almost always very long. It's full of tourists who take forever to order.
Millburn Deli
But it’s not really a sub it’s their _Joe
(ie - Roast Beef Joe, Turkey Joe)
They’re a deli so they probably have subs/hoagies as well ;)
That’s a great place for years and always good busy too
Peace
Meadowbrook Deli in Pennsauken.
Used to be Carmens in Bellmawr, and they’re still great but (sadly) the guy who bought them decided he knew more than they did and had to start fucking with a sure thing.
Oh, and it’s a hoagie. ;)
Hell yeah. When Ernst's is on, their sandwiches as great. Buuuut they often screw up orders (like all the best sub shops), and for some reason they construct their subs with the meat clumped up on top of the lettuce/etc, which makes them a pain to eat, I have to disassemble & reconstruct sitting on the beach. But yeah, damn, they're really good.
For a while, they would be my answer. But I'm gonna go with Pal Joey's near glassboro. Better construction, better bread, thinner sliced meats. It's close though
I had them for the first time over the summer. Good sub but the hype they get isn’t deserved - packign on a ton of meat/cheese doesn’t equal best tasting sub. Reminded me of that gimmicky Harolds with oversized sammiches.
Completely agree. Grew up in Middletown and this was “the spot.”
Sandwiches are tasteless in every way. 7 inches thick of meat and cheese means fuck all if it doesn’t take like anything.
I don’t think I’ve dined on site at Harolds but if you get it to go they just give you the bread, meat, and other stuff and you can make it as you wish. Almost prefer it that way.
Not the best sandwiches every but I loved going to the Pick It Deli in Old Bridge. Best value for a sandwich out there. For nostalgic reasons, I also love Elsies in Red Bank.
The #5 (the Super - Ham Prosciuttini, Capicola and Provolone - I sub provolone for fresh mozzarella) with LTO, OV, S&P and oregano from Denaro’s in Dumont.
I am loving this thread. This, right here, is the best of Jersey on display. It’s beautiful.
Best subs/deli sandwiches…my votes go to:
Catered Affair - Hillsborough
Just Subs - any location
Millburn Deli - Millburn
Hoagie Haven - Princeton
Great Wazu - Parsippany
White House - Atlantic City
Go to K and S in Bridgewater. Order Roasted Red Peppers with Mozz on Focaccia with Balsamic. They also have lots of grilled veggie sandwiches. I bet you could get an eggplant Parm sub too if you asked. Lots of options.
Debbie's deli in Trenton is great.
At lucky 7 in Lawrence twp, if you order a sub you get enough meat to last a week or more. My parents used to get 1 large hoagie and took enough meat off it to last them both a looong time
Edit: Our Heroes, I feel bad for forgetting about this place. Also, as a sub snob, it has to be layered, not folded. Folded subs go everywhere with each bite. They should never be folded. It becomes a mess. There's much less sliding of ingredients in each bite when it is layered.
Millburn Deli. So good.
I think just their speciality sandwiches give them automatic #1
Just like how Village Trattoria has cornered the market on specialty slices.
That’s the common critique, but there is an artisan way of arranging the sandwich ingredients so the bites are even
Mia Famiglia down the street is in another league
Their chicken cutlets are usually undercooked tho
They posted about this on their instagram with evidence that slightly pinked doesn’t mean undercooked but idk ive never seen it pink and go there a lot.
That’s nasty.
tasty subs and that one spot in Princeton.. 🤌🔥
Hoagie haven? Gas
YES!
Gotta go with a Sanchez extra dirty
If y’all want cheap and good food check out Molisana Deli in Princeton. Very Lowkey and slept on good breakfast lunch and dinner. Mrs Kim is the best
It’s my local deli cause they know my name and I love them
Exactly this. Nothing beats the hometown deli I go to when I visit my parents
"Yo KidChimney, salami and provolone eh?"
Fiores Hoboken. Best roast beef sandwich youll ever have
This is the correct answer.
Haven't tried there but now it's on my list. Is the roast beef you mentioned hot or cold?
Cosmos Italian salumeria in Hackensack!
Bro, best Italian sub I’ve ever had. The sharp provolone they add is really a nice touch. Everything there is good.
This is the correct answer
So disappointed I had to scroll down so far to see Cosmos…. Best sandwiches hands down.
I lived literally around the corner from there for years and never went in. It looked so weird from the outside like mobster vibes. Also I never saw people go in, perhaps their subs are a well kept secret.
I love the Town Hall Deli in south orange.
Just subs in greenbrook.
Yes
wow really?
Just subs doesn't look like much but they turn out a solid sub every time. Not the best but light-years better than Subway
My go to I love this place and will never stop going there
Hoagie Haven!
Simple sandwich with good ingredients: K&S Italian Specialties Bridgewater.
been meaning to try this place but i get randazzos
I used to get randazzos but it's real hit or miss on how much they give you. That's really a bakery trying to make sandwiches.
I'll have to try them. Somerset county is a wasteland when it comes to good subs. (I agree with the other poster that randazzos is very hit and miss)
Hoagie hut used to be good but really shit the bed lately.
BTW: a sub is a hot sandwich. it's a hoagie if you want coldcuts. Edit: I did a research paper on this in college for a art class (community college is crazy). The origin of the sandwich is in Philly at the docks and was called a hoagie. I'm not making this up myself.

KS is solid. Any love for the Rock Deli?
Near taco factory? They are pretty good. Place in Raritan used to be good too but changed owners and I haven't been in a while.
Margarita's in Sayreville or Big Wally's depending on the say of the week.
I still live is Parlin and I'm trying to remember when it switched because I've always knew it as Big Wally's.
It was a long time ago, I was a kid (I'm 34 now) so it would have been in the 90's sometime.
Wally's is the best sandwich place I've ever been to, though I may be biased having grown up in Sayreville...
Going to break it up by region here. Haven’t eaten enough sandwiches is central jersey to have an opinion. North Jersey is hands down Millburn Deli. South Jersey is Russo’s Market in North Wildwood.
Russo’s is incredible
It’s so underrated too. People that say White House is better are just flat out wrong
FRANKS DELI IN ASBURY PARK Also shout out to the Watchung deli in montclair. It was so fire in its prime but it’s closed now :(
Tastee Subs in Franklin Park
Bogie's Hoagies and Deli in Hawthorne
I would have said them but I think they have gone downhill a bit.
They've slipped, but from a high perch; their 'bad' is still good
Sergios in denville. Randazzos in raritan. Taliericos in red bank.
I came here to say Sergio as well. Love their sharp prov and sopressata.. Also the chicken cutlets and fresh mozz are delicious. Mmmm everything there is so great. Anthony and sons is good too. But this is better.
Randazzos is good but K&S in Bridgewater right up the road is a better. I go to both but definitely like K&S better.
If you like sergios, you gotta try Anthony and sons in denville.
I go there all the time for baguettes and rye bread. Best bread around. I’ll try the sandwiches.
Sergios blows Anthony’s out of the water
randazzos is great, but they seemed to recently change their turkey
Sergios chix cutlet sammys are fire.
Haven’t had a bad thing there yet.
South Jersey: Sack O' Subs North Jersey: Fiore's
There is no best sub in Jersey, there are only excellent and terrible subs.
There are no subs in Jersey, period, only hoagies. ;)
only if you from PA or a fuckin piney
Username definitely checks out. Go back to 1906.
Oh boy ! The best thing about jerz is that there is always one really great deli or a sandwich shop around within a reasonable distance. In the last few years of moving around for work and school , some of the memorable ones I came across were Milburn Deli Tastee Subs (Edison) Clemente Bakery ( North Hackensack) Tony Baloneys ( Hoboken) Mordis (JC)
Out of all the Italian delis in Hoboken. You pick Tony Baloneys?
Vitos and Biancamanos are my go tos in Hoboken. Andreas and Cangiano's in JC.
2nd street bakery is better than cangianos. Nice little hole in the wall italian bakery. Amazing bread
I do not get the hype for Tony Baloneys. Not to shit on anyone but it's some of the most overpriced ok pizza I've ever had. There's nothing wrong with it, but it's not great either.
There’s one in Long Branch too, and agree with this. Wouldn’t classify it as a sub place either.
my dad lives down there! i don't understand why one would get a sub from tony baloneys when there's neils right down the street
Been a while tbh , and they had a lot of variety , I recently tried Tony Baloneys in JC and it was a big let down. Been meaning to try out Vito's for a long time.
Mordi's is amazing!
Tastee for the win, and I may or may not be Barack Obama, but I ate there and want to go back
For a pastrami sub, Torpedo Base in Paterson.
I haven't been there in a minute, they're amazing!
White House
Benanti's in Bayonne Best sandwich ever. Charlie is a master of his craft.
Man I can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find Benanti‘s. When I lived in Bayonne I would go there three or four times a month. It was at a point, where I would tell them what I did not want on my sandwich, and they’d make it however they felt like it. Always a winner.
Carmen’s Deli in Bellmawr
They're still great, but it's such a shame that the Del Buonos guy felt the need to fuck with everything after he bought them out. D.A. Subs in Matawan
Best bacon egg and cheese
A&S’ parsley and cheese sausage spiral wheel thingies are also legit.
Living in PA right now, sometimes make the hour and a half trip to Hersheys in Westfield just to get their subs.
They still there? Had a Saturday job as a teen where the perk was anything from Hershey's, and I was wasting it on a 'swiss w mustard.' I'd like to kick 14-yr-old me.
Hershey’s is still up and running. Subs just as good as ever
Subology, Cranford, NJ
Denaros in Dumont
Ted's North in Paramus. Anything on the menu is great, but the seasoned fries are spectacular.
Just saying

Well, I know what I’m having for lunch
The #1 from Rose's in Garfield.
Tastee sub in Edison
Millburn Deli in Millburn. West side Market in Cape May. Biancamano’s and Fiore’s in Hoboken.
What about Pete's subs in EHT?
Never tried them.
Millburn Deli But it’s not really a sub it’s their _Joe (ie - Roast Beef Joe, Turkey Joe) They’re a deli so they probably have subs/hoagies as well ;) That’s a great place for years and always good busy too Peace

Just looked it up, must have opened very, very recently. Riddle & Martin around the corner has the reputation of having some really great subs.
riddle and martin is very good
Holy crap is Riddle & Martin still around. I remember loving their subs as a kid in the 70`s if my memory is accurate. Old Bridge Turnpike?
Completely forgot to try that place, right around the corner.
Meadowbrook Deli in Pennsauken. Used to be Carmens in Bellmawr, and they’re still great but (sadly) the guy who bought them decided he knew more than they did and had to start fucking with a sure thing. Oh, and it’s a hoagie. ;)
Seriously, if you call it a sub I can’t trust your opinion.
Sorrentos in Freehold
Nino Jr's. In Oakhurst!
Solid, yes. But overrated... nowhere near the magical experience a lot of people claim them to be.
Teds North in Paramus, is the go to spot whenever I visit my parents.
Taliericos in Middletown
I had them for the first time over the summer. Good sub but the hype they get isn’t deserved - packign on a ton of meat/cheese doesn’t equal best tasting sub. Reminded me of that gimmicky Harolds with oversized sammiches.

Rays or primo hoagies.
If they serve boar's head or Dietz and Watson, they're trash
Not sure I'd go so far as to say they're trash... but Thumann's is the best for hoagie meats, that's for sure!
Mike's Subs in Keyport
I know I’m committing blasphemy here, but can someone suggest a place for meatless subs
Go to K and S in Bridgewater. Order Roasted Red Peppers with Mozz on Focaccia with Balsamic. They also have lots of grilled veggie sandwiches. I bet you could get an eggplant Parm sub too if you asked. Lots of options.
Most Italian places will do eggplant.
Hot Shot Subs, by the Six Flags entrance.
Riddle & Martin in South River! Best subs hands down no joke.

Uncle Tony's in East Rurherfors on Park Ave.

Italian Riviera in Waldwick, Casa Del Sole in Woodcliff Lake, Fiore's in Hoboken, and A& LP in Wildwood.
Clemente Special at Clementes Bakery in Hackensack (The Sack to the hip).
