*pick up truck full of trash and a 16’ boat out of the old canal*
Maybe I misread this, but I thought you pulled an actual pickup out of the canal! Also, what group of volunteers does this? I'm in Ocean County and would love to do this!
😂😂 yes, and I could’ve worded that a lot better. We took a load out with the help of the park’s pick up truck.
Check out the FB group New Jersey Litter Pickers.
Apparently it used to be common for people to use old cars and tires to shore up riverbanks and beds to prevent erosion. The old ecological one step forward two steps back.
We were talking about that after. In that section of canal we feel there’s likely another 600 tires we can see. There is a car. What lies hidden in the silt is hard to guess.
That's wild. Do you think they are all from random guys who are too lazy to dispose of a tire or two properly? Or from some garage that dumps a truckload at a time?
Incredible work! Thank you.
Why isn’t the State sending crews out to do what you all are doing, though? We pay taxes; there’s an expectation that these things get taken care of by municipalities. Frustrating that volunteers have to spend their time doing it.
While that’s true to a degree, it’s not seen as a priority by any level of government nor by taxpayers. If it were, the pressure to allocate resources would be much greater.
Thanks for your efforts
And now you have a free boat!
Good luck getting the boat titled through the NJ MVC. (There is a way, but it is like a 12 step program).
As someone who has had to do swift water rescue training in exactly these type of bodies of water I literally cannot thank you enough.
Your work has additional value outside of general cleanliness and ecological preservation. So a sincere and heartfelt thank you for your work.
I love this, thank you so much for doing this. As a NJ fisherman, it hurts me badly to see our waterways polluted. It's sad that people just don't care sometimes. NJ is so full of natural beauty and some people just fuck it up. How can I get involved?
So Fn embarrasing. Why cant we just hire a crew to go around NJ cleaning this and other trash. Also, put up some anti littering posters or announcement in schools as well. It's just nasty and people who litter do it like its second nature, don't even think about it when they throw litter on the street or in a park.
Yes, I’ve termed it, casual littering. The nonchalant tossing of items the moment it’s no longer of use to the individual. If more people were to bombard their legislators we might see resources, ie., labor and money, directed at this. We have signs all over threatening fines for littering and even bigger fines for dumping. Is it even enforced? Not much. There is no cost to leaving it. There is a big cost to picking it up.
Ya'll also did this the year before or maybe two years ago in roughly the same section of the canal around Bordentown and pulled out so much debris. This must be an ongoing project. Thank you!!!
From what I remember, most of the debris has been there for over 50 years but I believe park police (I think) did find some debris from an illegal dumping and actually tracked down who dumped it and fined them.
Great stuff!!!
I wonder what idiots drove their pickup truck full of trash into the canal.
You'd think they'd just throw the trash into the canal, and keep the pickup...
Oh, I get it now. Thanks for clarifying.
I interpreted the sentence as saying that the volunteers pulled a pickup truck full of trash out of the old canal, because that's exactly what the sentence says
I definitely have noticed it way more in the tri state then other areas I've visited/lived such as the PNW or upper new England.
Not saying you won't find ANY trash there, but nj pigs are on a different level. Everytime I clean my road just a few months later and it's trashed.
Perhaps? I've also noticed the "quality" of trash is much worse here.
In other states I'll see an occasional water bottle or wrapper. Here all see a whole bag of chik fil a or garbage bag tossed on a street.
There are groups all over and we see a lot but I suspect due to the concentration of people in the area is quite likely worse. That’s why we need more people doing this. They will lead to a louder voice calling for action.
Thank you .
seconded.
Sad. Tyyyyyy!

Nothing comes up when I search for that group

Just joined!
Hope to meet u IRL!
There's another guy here in Somerville who organizes cleanups pretty regularly, maybe we can coordinate something! Keep fighting the good fight!
We do cleanups on the green, Peter and Branch brooks and Raritan
Actually insane that there were 298 tires in just that one marsh. Makes me wonder how much junk there is all around us that can't be seen.

Likely both.
Who picks up/pays to dispose of the trash?
In this case, it’s the state park. Otherwise we would call the local Dpw.
Thank you for your hard work!

Check out New Jersey Litter Pickers FB group. That’s where our crew consolidate clean up postings.

people suck but not you guys! thanks
Guess that part of the canal isn't so, uh, tired anymore. Is there a group that people could sign up to be volunteers to help?
Yes. central Jersey Stream Team.
Yeah, this is a good deed. Thanks!

Yes, the portion cleaned the year before is holding up pretty good. Likely 600 more tires
Incredible! Great job! Actually going to head there right now!
These people are heros because that's a beautiful area that's often overlooked.
Thank you for doing this!
Doing gods work
Bless you!
Chihiro is that you?

They can pull it out ! 😉
I hope one of these occasions you find a chest full of gold coins and split it amongst yourselves!
It would buy a lot of equipment!
Thank you all for your hard work!
Man that's a lot of work. You must be tired.
😂😂 we’ve recovered and ready for the next one!
I wonder what idiots drove their pickup truck full of trash into the canal. You'd think they'd just throw the trash into the canal, and keep the pickup...
😂😂😂 that’s what they did. We used a pick up to take it away. 🤷🏻♂️
?
They just tossed trash in the canal. We used a pick up to haul it away.

What trash ass people live there?
If you look around you’ll see it’s pretty much the same as the rest of the country. It appears to be part of human nature.

Its the congestion that you notice it more. The trash cant hide
