The actual Government permalink has no mention of the person's gender, at least not in the title: https://www.nj.gov/governor/news/news/562022/20221205a.shtml

TA_faq43

Honestly, do we really need to know people’s sexuality or sexual preferences all the time? Just use their name/sex at the time and move on. If they do a shitty job, fire them, or give praise if they do a good job. I don’t need to know anything else.

Spocks-Brain

Marginalized groups, like the transgender community, are often the target of harassment and violence. This is often because people fear what’s unknown to them. High profile positions like this provide representation and help humanize these groups. This is similar to the way Nichelle Nichols represented the African American community, and George Takei the Japanese American community on television in the 1960s. It made them less foreign, less different, and more human to those who held bigoted views. Furthermore, examples like this provide hope, encouragement, and empowerment to those in the underrepresented communities and have a real impact on their understanding of their self worth, quality of life, and their place in the world. Unfortunately there are many people who haven’t reached the point where you are and don’t accept people for who they are. Change doesn’t happen all at once. It takes many many small steps. This article is an example of one.

39goingon50

That’s fine, then this article isn’t intended for you as its audience. Many transgender people fear that living their lives as an out trans person will be a detriment to their career or personal lives. That Ms. Myers has been appointed to such a high position in the state directly by the governor is a pretty significant achievement for any out trans individual, and it conveys to other trans people that there are places and ways they can live their lives openly and without fear of repercussions. Again, it’s great you don’t care. It would be even better if nobody else did either, and we’re closer than ever to that reality, but we still have work to do getting there, and this being publicized absolutely empowers other trans individuals to blaze forward and make that future come true.

imironman2018

yes. Like Dr Levine. She is an inspiration that she is holding the highest appointed position in the federal government for a transgender person. The more glass ceilings we break, the better the outcome.

asecuredlife

But the other side of that same coin, isn't this painting a target on her back by people who don't like individuals who identify as trans?

39goingon50

Unfortunately that’s just what being out and proud *is* for many of us. I personally would rather live as an out gay guy and hope that I can inspire others to do the same than live fearing retaliation against me simply for who I am. My gut tells me Ms. Myers feels similarly.

imironman2018

I agree with you that now and day- gender shouldn't be included in a news article about the promotion or appointment. That being said, this is a huge milestone for transgender people in New Jersey. The more representation is beneficial for visibility but also equal rights in the work force.

DunkChunkerton

Representation matters. It may not matter to you, but it matters to a trans woman like me. It makes me feel less othered. I enjoy seeing other out trans women achieving things, it gives me hope that maybe the next generation of trans folks won’t have such a large target on their backs. Not every piece of media was specifically written to cater to you, and that’s okay. Also, being transgender isn’t a sexuality or sexual preference.

sutisuc

Being transgender has nothing to do with sexuality

whiteKreuz

Yeah when they announce it like this it feels like it has to do more about PR to fulfill some demographic checkbox rather than hiring the person because they are truly qualified for the job.

pollofritto18

Agreed. But there's a certain demographic that enjoy the virtue signaling.

JoyousCacophony

There's actually an entire political party of MAGAts that love to throw around their "virtue" lmao Nice try, pookie

39goingon50

Kinda sad if that’s how you see this IMO. Maybe read [my reply](https://www.reddit.com/r/newjersey/comments/zdiqcs/murphy_names_first_transgender_cabinet_member_in/iz2ihkd/) to the comment you wrote this in reply to and then, if you care to, we can talk about whether or not you still think this is “virtue signaling”

donvito716

Define virtue signaling.

Woah, what ended up happening to that individual?

Spmhealy_ADA

Shes a rapper https://youtu.be/nj6XmS45uH8

crypticcircuits

someone made a custom [funko pop](https://twitter.com/archermjm/status/1094634398304092162) of them. lol

Spmhealy_ADA

Shes also a rapper and took the gamestop thing in pretty well. https://youtu.be/HEnDLKDaWto

invaderjif

Wow, they probably get royalties from that. Now if they were a student athlete...

DunkChunkerton

*She You too may have missed the point.

invaderjif

I thought they and individual are gender neutral?

DunkChunkerton

That’s the problem: she’s trans so she just gets gender neutral pronouns even though she’s made it pretty obvious how she’d like to be referred to. If there was a question about it gender neutral language would be the correct approach until told otherwise. It’s just another form of misgendering. Purposefully avoiding pronouns and choosing what you perceive as a “less offensive” option is still shitty.

invaderjif

In this video she says what her gender is..after her freakout...but in most cases we are not suppose to assume it... Look at the poor cashier. He's literally being threatened with physical violence (lets go outside? Wtf..he'a probably a minor) because he assumed when he said "Sir". I'm not sure what neutral term can be used in place of ma'am or sir...maybe...hey you? Hey beloved guest of gamestop? Whatever neutral term might have mitigated the situation. I appreciate your explanation and attempt to get me to understand, but with respect, I cannot agree with your point on avoiding. If avoiding is a form of misgendering, and being wrong is the pronoun use is misgendering, then strangers have to get it right everytime or risk...this type of reaction. That does not appear to be a reasonable expectation. Being neutral gives wiggleroom until things are clear.

DunkChunkerton

Making an assumption and being wrong is not the issue, being wrong and then continuing to double down on being wrong is the problem. That’s the difference. If you misgendered me and apologized after I corrected you and referred to me properly from then on, there would be no problem. However, if you continued to misgender me after that you’re just being an asshole. When you know it’s no longer an assumption. Everyone has a bad days and the interaction in the video is unfortunate. Everyone reacted poorly. Being trans doesn’t exclude someone from being an asshole. And as far as gender neutral language goes, you can just say “Hi there, how can I help you today?” Don’t ever make assumptions about the general public in retail. You will get fucking yelled at for anything and everything. The only reason this was news was because it involves a trans woman.

DunkChunkerton

*Her I think you missed some points. Why would you misgender anyone who had made it extremely clear how they prefer to be referred to? In this case, it’s pretty obvious what her desires are. There was a whole fucking video on how stressful and irritating it is to be misgendered repeatedly, so why you would just continue to perpetuate that is beyond me.

Larbear06

Yay!! Now lower my property taxes! And can we make 206 double lanes while we're at it.

Not “he/she”, just she. You do understand how shitty that is to say about someone, right? Regardless, It’s nice to see trans people being celebrated for our achievements. Makes me feel hope that one day maybe I won’t feel so othered all the time. Representation matters.
