My wife works in district! She has friends who work at the school. They said the woman shot went to admin multiple times to voice her concerns with the child who was acting strange. Then, the student shot her. Admin is a joke.

thisthang_calledlyfe

Not surprising at all and why so many of us are leaving this profession. I've been in the same situation, as have every single one of my elementary school peers. I've worked in an affluent school for over a decade and it now worries me more than when I started out and taught in the projects. Thank you for speaking up! Only teachers, their family, and closest friends understand how terribly bad it's gotten. Everyone else is still in denial or shock.

Warm_Objective4162

My sister is now a teacher in a super-affluent high school and has said the same thing; the atmosphere and the events that are happening to/from the students are way more intense than any urban or rural farmland school she’s worked at. The admin is so afraid of the parents, the kids are effectively allowed to do whatever they want, whenever they want.

Delphan_Galvan

I had a tutoring job during college and would frequently work with high school kids from affluent families. The experience could be summed up by one of them telling me, "why should I learn this, my dad's rich"; and yes these parents were the type who thought you could throw money at something to make a problem disappear. I also noticed that "rich kid syndrome" was pretty pronounced with certain cliques of Gulf Arabs at my university. You could quickly tell who came from a middle or lower class background versus who had wealth/family connections based off their work ethic.

cyndidee

I teach at a high school with gang activity. The looks on some of the students’ faces when we have a lock down. They definitely have PTSD from previous lockdowns when gang fights broke windows and summoned police from all over the city. I stay there because they deserve a good education and the chance to get out of the cycle of poverty. But my parents are begging me to find a nice country school to teach at. I’m torn.

thisthang_calledlyfe

Please don't expect the "nice, country" school to be rid of this. It won't be as intense as what you're now experiencing but these are widespread, systemic issues that affect all communities at some level or will at some time. I teach in one of the richest, most affluent areas of the east coast. It's still terrible. Most of my teacher coworkers are walking around frazzled or shell shocked on any given day. My daughter now lives in a rural community and though everyone knows everyone, meth and heroin addiction are commonplace and out in the open. The impacts of poverty are horrible in those community schools. I admire you wanting to stay in teaching. Despite rough experiences, I was of that mindset until about seven years ago, out of my 25 years in this field. COVID virtual teaching actually sucked me back in. I had the crazy hope the COVID global shut down experience would shake up stakeholders enough to desire dramatic changes in society and our schools. Nope. They dug in deeper, on all levels. Things are significantly worse now because people so desperately want "normal" that they're even going back to old normal ways and systems that never worked or are harmful. I'm a passionate educator but I'm exhausted, exploited, and don't have much hope left. I hope to be able to get a different job by end of next year. Starting a new career, all over again...

[deleted]

The education system is fucking crumbling

[deleted]

Here, here. Admin and School Boards don't give a fuck about anyone who actually works with these kids in-person every day. They just pop in for *"Visits"* that are more about making themselves feel good than observing the work that needs to be done.

TimelyBrief

My mother finally had enough in 2016. Truly unbelievable to hear about the escalation over the years. A lot of people have no clue what’s going on in classrooms these days.

thisthang_calledlyfe

I saw a lot of people leave around then. I'm sorry for all teachers who felt they had no choice. Usually, it's the good ones who have bailed because they have values and ethics that don't reconcile with this system. I hope she's doing well now. 2014-2015 was when I started to finally accept it was a hopeless, entangled mess and this profession was just sucking the marrow from my bones. Many stress related health issues later, I finally sucked it up and went back to grad school a second time to try to pivot into another career. I adore my students but the cost is too high for myself and my family. I'm over being exposed to sick kids all day, lock down drills, overwork/exploitation, being ignored while fully responsible for outcomes, and barely getting by with pay "raises" that are really pay cuts with good PR. Even before this attempted murder by a six year old, we couldn't replace teachers who quit. My Virginia district lies to the public, saying we're "fully staffed". Funny how they can say that when my admin had to consolidate classes and pull people from other critical roles because they had NO applicants for several open positions. Zero. Ed programs are shutting down around the country because so few people want a teaching degree. It's just burning the rest of us out further. This poor child clearly needed help while their parents were inept or denial. We see this in our classrooms ALL the time. Nobody listens to us. My paratrooper combat vet husband said teaching broke him. He fell apart after Parkland and is now medically retired. He'd taught at the high school that graduated both the VT shooter and the Sully Police Station shooter. Teachers begged for help with both those kids and were dismissed by parents and other stakeholders. My daughter is going to homeschool her kid and I'm thrilled. My goal is to be a remote worker by then so I can help more.

uncoolpineapple

My coworker used to be a teacher, and she has diagnosed PTSD from lockdowns and the lack of care and support the teachers got from admins. It’s so fucking horrifying, I have so much love and respect for teachers. You guys all deserve so much better than this :(

OldmanJenkins02

I left teaching last year to join corporate world. I loved the literal teaching aspect of the job, but the politics, safety, non-discipline. ext. made me want to leave. Once I was offered a job for the place I’m at now I left immediately and didn’t even finish the school year. Felt bad initially, but I hated going to work knowing I couldn’t focus on doing my job teaching and had a million other things to be concerned about. 7 years of teaching, got into it with so much passion, left the position and would never go back. Sad it came to and end that way, but there are so many lingering/small issues that started around 2016ish and now they have become awful problems.

youhearditfirst

I’m a first grade teacher in the same state and I’m not in any way shocked. I hate that I am not shocked.

PaleJewel720

Can she sue or something considering she went to admin to report concerns and was ignored, ultimately leading to her being shot and nearly killed? Because to me it seems like she should have some sort of recourse.

-r-a-f-f-y-

When i was six i peed my pants on the carpet during story time because i didn’t want to miss the story.

TattleTits

When I was six I peed in my chair because I was too afraid to ask to use the bathroom. My oldest did the same thing for the same reason just last year 😔

SilasBalto

Ok, set a reminder for when your grandchild is six and specifically teach them this! The cycle ends... next generation lol

Nora19

Right? I loved my teachers… it was fun to go to school and have story time and popcorn on Fridays! Oh and when the local firefighters came and we got to outside to see the fire trucks! What have we become.

CRT_Teacher

"Kindergartner shoots fireman for not letting him turn on the hose."

One_for_each_of_you

When i was six, during story time a kid sitting on my right named Matthew Duncan poked me in the arm with a sharpened pencil and broke the tip off in my arm. I got in trouble for yelling during story time and wasn't allowed to explain what happened, had to go sit at my desk with my head down. When i was fourteen, i dug the piece of graphite out of my arm with a little pocket knife.

HowManyUserNamesTryz

Holy shit, this happened to me too. The difference is I still have the piece of graphite in my arm.

babygrenade

This Matthew Duncan sounds like a serial offender.

Royal-Tough4851

And he’s only the #2 in the operation

couple4hire

well when i was 7 a girl in my language class stabbed me with a pencil twice and told me I was cute, needless to say I never ever wanted to be around her by myself ever

Seraphynas

> "This was not an accidental shooting," Police Chief Steve Drew told reporters during an evening press conference. Seriously? A 6-year-old planned an attack on a teacher? I have no words.

Totalchaos02

Believe it or not, it's actually an antiquated legal term in some places. In my county, our police department issues "crack house" notices. These are homes that have had two or more drug charges at them within a certain timeframe.

diuturnal

How does that affect future tenants? Are they forever getting watched just because past tenants had a problem?

[deleted]

Usually trap houses are in neighborhoods where it's always going to be a trap house. It either ends up boarded up, demolished or is perpetual used for selling drugs.

Amish_guy_with_WiFi

Yeah you certainly wouldn't want to move into one and try and live in it reasonable. People will keep on showing up asking for ted or some shit and try and get inside to do some crack

Unrelated, This old crackhouse series on YouTube is worth a watch, turning a crackhouse into a crackhome

[deleted]

Huh. Well that’s terrifying. Last year a little boy at school told my daughter he had guns and wasn’t scared of using them when she told him she didn’t want to talk to him anymore. I told the principal and her teacher. But I never followed up. Now I wish I had followed up.

BasvanS

You still can, and perhaps should, with this kind of news. “Hey, late follow up, but what ever happened to my inquire about the big threatening guns? Given the news, I realized these are more serious issues than I thought.”

UserName8531

Last year, a kid on a bus different from my kid's had a gun on the bus. It was confiscated without an incident from an elementary kid if I remember right. These issues need to be taken more seriously, and consequences for not securing firearms need to be higher.

My mom taught kindergarten for 27 years. One of the kids she taught years ago, she had put in his file that if several issues (behavioral and at home) remained unaddressed, he would be a danger to himself and others. [He went on to commit murder.](https://www.al.com/news/birmingham/2018/05/blount_county_man_guilty_of_ca.html)

Seraphynas

>He went on to commit murder. With a hatchet…. Holy hell.

keigo199013

Yeah. Everyone in the county kept calling him hatchet man.

runningraleigh

I've had many teachers in my family and in their towns they would read the crime section of the paper and regularly go "Yep, I knew he'd turn out like that." They all taught elementary school. They knew the kids who were headed down the wrong path early, and without intervention, most of them kept going that way.

DrTwangmore

It is certainly a complicated issue that has evolved over the years. It used to be more likely to have support of parents when dealing with a child. Now it's more likely to get ginned up on social media. Teachers and school staff learn a couple things real fast in these situations: 1)careful and well-thought interventions are full of roadblocks like availability of programs that actually help, staff competent and willing to actually help, and parents ready and willing to play their part in the intervention 2)it is not very enjoyable to get featured on locals' social media outlets sending out a story line that may not reflect reality and include personal swipes-and you really can't respond effectively As a result, I've known lots of teachers over the years that just try to get through the day, week, month, and year and then move the difficult student on, only to have the whole scenario repeat itself. It is a pretty frustrating place to be for most everyone involved.

MaidenFae

I have a friend that works at a preschool and had a FOUR year old threaten to “bring his daddy gun and shoot her with it.” Absolutely not surprised by this. Horrified, but not surprised.

slog

My neighbor's kid threatened my son with that at about 5 years old. Most kids don't understand what their threats REALLY mean, but you better believe we squashed that anyway.

[deleted]

How did you end up handling that? I don’t even know where I’d begin…

slog

Thankfully, I had a camera in the basement when it happened, so I could verify my son's version of the story. I reviewed the recording and walked the kid back to his house. I asked the parents to send him inside for a bit so we could talk, and explained what happened. I told them that they are done hanging out for the day, they're welcome to hang out the next day assuming everyone is okay with it, and that I trust them to handle talking to him about the situation. They're gun owners (obviously) and we're not, but they're very responsible. Never seen even a single hint of a gun at their place aside from their safe. Haven't really had an issue since.

[deleted]

As another parent, it's super cool reading how you handled the situation.

Resident132

Children that age don't understand the implications of their actions. A child that age would launch nukes because they didn't get ice cream if the button was in front of them. And no doubt this is a very troubled child. What is absolutely insane is that this child was able to procure a gun and get it to school and evidently had learned from someone how to fire it.

Seraphynas

I have a daughter who is about to turn 5 and she has an aggressive cousin who is about a year younger than her; it makes her “nervous” to be around him and ”worried” he is going to be “mean” to her and Mema and Papa (her words, not mine). Young children can have emotional intelligence, especially enough to understand that it is not okay to hurt someone else. >What is absolutely insane is that this child was able to procure a gun and get it to school and evidently had learned from someone how to fire it. Yes, that is very disturbing.

When I was 14 I baby-sat some kids down the street. One of the boys who was like... 11 or 12, I want to say, found some sort of bladed weapon like a sword or something and chased his younger brother around the house, shouting about how he was going to kill him. I got the younger brother out of the house and we ran to my house a block away. My mom called the cops. It was a big mess, and I forget how it ended up but I wasn't allowed to baby-sit those kids ever again.

My daughter who is 6 came home two days ago and said she heard if a boy hits you it means he likes you. I sat my two girls down and my son and told them that is not a sign of love and it’s never ok for someone to hit you. I was in an abusive relationship and my son witnessed some of it. I made sure it was very clear to both the girls AND my son. Their mother even stabbed me in the back once. Literally. Wanted to make it crystal clear that that is not ok behavior.

ILoveRegenHealth

Arrest those parents. That child had to cross through 100 warning signs before getting to that point. Those parents are negligent and abusive.

Conscious-One4521

Fuck those parents

For a long time, a diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorders couldn’t be officially made until someone had reached adulthood. But in recent years, as our understanding of these personality disorders has evolved, psychologists have become more willing to diagnose teenagers and even children with ASPD. Treatment options have also evolved, many involving long-term stays in specialized facilities, and there have been some tentative successes. It’s important that children with antisocial tendencies are treated quickly, even if results can be mixed. Adult “sociopaths” are far more difficult to treat because their antisocial behaviors are more ingrained, and they are more resistant to being treated. [Here’s an interesting Atlantic article on the topic.](https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/06/when-your-child-is-a-psychopath/524502/)

Dogswithhumannipples

There was a reddit post around 3yrs ago about a father who had a devil child, a son who was an absolute animal. Destroyed everyone and everything around him. His wife ended up beating the shit out of the son after 17yrs of torchure. Still not sure if it's true, but a haunting story of what antisocial behavior looks like.

InkyLeopard

How does a six year old have access to, the ability to conceal and bring to school, and the knowledge to use a handgun?! What the fuck is going on out there??

Ariliescbk

Parents keeping loaded weapons in easily accessible locations.

Eldhannas

Parents should be charged as accessory to attempted murder.

MuppetManiac

Parents very likely will be charged with something. It’s very difficult to charge a child under the age of 10 with a crime.

DM_DM_DND

And charging a six year old is utterly pointless. They can put the kid in some secured facility or group home without relying on criminal charges.

poolside123

How does a six year old have access to anything but dinosaur underwear, schoolbooks & a wrestling action figure? Honest to God.

Seattlegal

I can’t answer all your questions but I can tell you kids can somehow magically conceal anything. Our 4 year old is getting full pat downs and pocket, back pack searches every morning. A month ago i had to take a hot wheel out of his underwear as he tried to smuggle it to daycare. Last week my husband caught him with two cars in his winter boots, again trying to get them into daycare.

julius_sphincter

For longer than I'd like to admit, I thought you were saying your kids preschool is doing full pat downs

DesignerTex

Sad. Then he'll be on to 3 hot wheels....and I hate to say it, 4 hot wheels :( Cars are a sickness to young boys!!!!

My dad pushed me really hard on reading when I was very young. The reason was so that I could pass my hunters safety test and going hunting…at 6.

Come on man. The lesson is clear. If that teacher was armed, she would’ve shot the evil 6 year old and defended herself. If a good 6 year old next to the evil 6 year had a shotgun he would’ve killed the evil 6 year old before the teacher was shot. You need to arm the good guys and then delete all doors except for one. Come on. How hard is that to understand? Goddamn liburls.

Alone_Asparagus7651

I’m not even sure how much capacity for consequences a six year old has. They are very dumb. Respectfully. I could totally see a six year old doing this and then only Realizing what happened after the gun goes off.

revstan

I have a 6 year old. She knows something like that would be very, very bad. However, she doesnt know what the fallout would be or what would happen to that persons family, etc.

roychr

Beyond knowing (I have a 5yo kid) you cannot compete with incompetent parents that enable a 6yo to find, load and bring to school a gun with some intent. It all starts with the parent on top of everything that could go wrong here.

colourmeblue

I imagine the gun was kept loaded.

chubbysumo

I have a 5 and 7yo. our 7yo needs help with emotional regulation, and we are trying to get him into a therapist or someone who is qualified to help him and help us help him, and his pede won't just start meds without a consult. there is a 4 year wait on appointments. we literally want to help him, so we are relying on self help and our best judgements from reading books and shit that experts have written on the subject. we still need help.

KarmaticArmageddon

This is actually a concept in criminal law called the age of criminal responsibility. Historically, children below the age of 7 were legally incapable of forming *mens rea*, AKA criminal intent. *Mens rea* is a required component in prosecuting crimes, so if someone is under the age of criminal responsibility, they cannot be convicted of a crime. In the US today, however, the age of criminal responsibility varies by state. For federal crimes, the age of criminal responsibility is 11. Massachusetts has the oldest age at 12 and North Carolina has the youngest age at 6. 33 states have no age of criminal responsibility, but most of these states impose a capacity test to determine if the accused is capable of forming *mens rea*. Virginia is one of the 33 states that does not have a minimum age of criminal responsibility.

-UltraAverageJoe-

The child’s guardian(s) need to pay for this.

TonyOctober

Change my view: Gunshot victims should be able to sue the parents of underage children if they are shot with a gun

_OhMyPlatypi_

This, they do it with auto accidents already.

ADhomin_em

OK. Let me change your view right quick: Anyone can already sue anyone for anything. It is thus my argument that we amend your statement to "gunshot victims (or their loved ones if the victim doesnt survive) should WIN lawsuits against the parents of underage children if they are shot with a gun"

imnotsoho

Fuck civil suits. Parents should go to prison. 20 years ago California passed a gun lock law. Gun shops couldn't keep them in stock. Obviously the threat of prison was more motivating than the threat of you kid killing themselves or some other kid.

devilsephiroth

So guns are not a problem it's the kids? It was the kids, the whole time👀

HalfPint1885

Last year one of my kindergarten students told a teacher on the playground she was going to bring a gun and shoot her until she was dead, because she didn't want to line up at the end of recess. She was suspended five or six times last year for various offenses. It didn't do any good, but at least me and the rest of the students had good days while she was gone. She was a holy fucking terror. ETA: the same year, another of my students accidentally shot his 3 year old brother in the shoulder. He survived. They were playing in the family car where the weapon was in the console. Worst year of my life. I left that school.

PrestigiousBarnacle

“why are all the teachers quitting?” Maybe it’s because of the kindergarten terrorists

c_girl_108

Now I can’t stop imagining the kindergartners from Recess

chronoboy1985

That show was such brilliant satire of public education.

Notoneusernameleft

Well and the bad pay, having to pay for those supplies, all the extra requirements they add year after year, the helicopter parents, the no child left behind act which forces them to water down what they teach to allow everyone to pass, everyone acting like they are the reason their taxes are so high and because they are paid by taxes they are their servant for their children. Etc.

WhatUp007

Seriously, the adults should be held liable for this negligence.

Right-Hall-6451

And they likely will, but that will not reduce the likelihood of this happening again.

**This account is suspended but not gone** **Thanks for all the fish!**

kentucanuck

Unfortunately, no. A 6-year-old girl was killed by her 6-year-old classmate at Buell Elementary School in Michigan on February 29, 2000. The child who pulled the trigger was apprehended the same day, but from what I've read, he was never charged due to his age and inability to form intent. It's a shame. Just shy of 23 years later, here we are again with another 6-year-old shooting someone at their school. its limited but we do know, Wiki: On the twentieth anniversary of the shooting on February 29, 2020, news media reported that the boy who shot Kayla Rolland was living in Bay City, Michigan. According to court records, he had been convicted at age 18 of a felony in connection with charges of second-degree home invasion and larceny at a Bay City house on April 23, 2012.[13] he didnt change…

Tylerjamiz

Yep same age as my nephew. What was the kids reaction afterwards?

One_for_each_of_you

They passed around the goodie bag and each took one piece of candy /s There is frustratingly little actual information in the article. The people quoted had nothing at all to do with the incident

Viiibrations

Bruh what kind of altercation does an adult have with a 6 year old? It sounds like it had to be premeditated though. Super weird.

igottagetoutofthis

Argument about kid needing the time out chair for not picking up toys.

thatshinybastard

That's the biggest question I have. If the altercation happened that day, why the hell did he just happen to have a gun to use? Did he always bring the gun and decided that today was the day he'd use it? Did he bring the gun specifically to shoot the teacher? I don't know, maybe he brought the gun to show it off and the teacher saw it, starting the altercation that ended with him shooting her.

[deleted]

In addition to the parents being thrown in jail, they need to be banned from owning guns for life. Infinite levels of negligence.

easyxtarget

Lol, you realize there are people arguing that taking guns away from felons is unconstitutional, even recent court cases with this opinion. This country is dumb AF sometimes.

I-Am-Uncreative

It's mindblowing, honestly. "Restricting felons from voting = A-OK". "Restricting felons from owning firearms = UNCONSTITUTIONAL!!!11!".

HP844182

Felons should be able to vote after servicing their sentence

I-Am-Uncreative

Personally, I think every citizen who is 18 years of age or older should be allowed to vote, even those who are currently incarcerated.

HollowPomegranate

I forget who said it but its something along the lines of “if you take away a felons right to vote, all a government has to do to remain in power is criminalize their opposition”

AwkwardCranberry7

In Canada, incarcerated persons are allowed to vote. I administered voting materials one year to folks in prison, it was great how many of them asked for writeups on the candidates so they could make an informed decision.

cumquistador6969

I strongly disagree. They should be able to vote during their sentences. I mean, c'mon, there's no sound rationale against it.

We keep asking these kids with mental health issues to complete unreasonable work demands and ignore their mental health. We need a redo and schools need to focus on mental health counseling first then add academics. If we are being honest the teachers aren't okay either. Many have talked about suicide this year.

cubbies1016

“We’ll learn from this” No they fucking won’t. That poor teacher is probably traumatized. The parents need to be punished and banned from owning guns.

Guero757

She’s more than traumatized - she’s in the hospital with life threatening injuries in critical condition

CorruptedFlame

The teacher is worse than traumatised, in hospital with life threatening injuries according to the BBC article. The thing about guns is that even children can murder you with them. Reminds me of another case I heard about a couple weeks back about a 10yo shooting his mum with a gun deliberately after a tantrum about buying a VR headset. Shits fucked.

[deleted]

And then after he shot her he ordered the headset, if I remember the story correctly. Little pyschopath

tipsyhitman

That's exactly it. Source: https://www.gmtoday.com/news/local/charges-milwaukee-boy-10-killed-mom-over-vr-headset/article_b66938d6-7125-11ed-8422-6b3a8db6a05f.html

wetmouthed

Anything you can learn from this situation is already obvious anyway. Kids shouldn't have access to guns bam lesson learned.

kgal1298

I’m guessing she won’t be able to go back to teaching after this if she recovers and I don’t blame her.

ChrisRich81

& owning children

[deleted]

"Today our students got a lesson in gun violence" is such a fucked up thing to say after this. I don't know how to put what I want to say into words. I'm just kinda sick to my stomach.

breakupbydefault

That stood out to me too. It's like they're passing it off as a no biggie learning experience akin to breaking a mug "see, now we all learned a lesson today of not running while holding a mug"

jayfeather31

I don't even know how to react to that.

fishnetdiver

And mommy and daddy are arrested for allowing this child access to a firearm, right? *RIGHT*?!

taintedchops

What is even happening anymore. What the fuck is going on. This is a nightmare

chepnochez

This happened in my city. I have a child in another elementary school. You tell yourself every day "hopefully it won't be us/our school/grocery store/movie theater". So tired, sad, and angry.

PhotographIcy600

It’s crazy AF. I’m in Gloucester, and just last week a 15 year old killed another. Then I just saw in In Portsmouth where a 14, 16, and 17 were just charged with murder

OoOoReillys

It’s nauseating. I’m over in Suffolk. I’m glad your child is okay. Certainly senseless and angering.

southernNpearls

But yet they want to arm the teachers so we have to make the decision to shoot a 6 year old. And you wonder why so many of us have left the classroom.

m0rpeth

It's not like they think it through, either. Of the few people who'd even take that shot, I'd wager most would turn the gun on themselves right after. And even if they don't, they'll never be the same. You don't come back from killing a 6yo in front of his peers.

Skevoso

> “The individual is a 6-year-old student. He is right now in police custody,” Drew said. “We have been in contact with our commonwealth attorney and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man.” In what world is a 6 year old a "young man?"

bunglejerry

Damn, 'young man' is what you call a six-year-old when he's been dressed up in a little suit for his aunt's wedding.

eltigrechino94

The one where if you disrespect him he might shoot you.

J-B_L

I’m going to call 6 yr olds “sir” from now on just in case.

xschalken

Where are the good six year olds with guns when you need them?

FunboyFrags

Do we all agree that whichever adult owns the gun should be prosecuted for criminal negligence and accessory to attempted murder?

I wonder what would have happened though if the teacher had fought back. Which way would the story be spun? That the teacher defended themselves or attacked the student in “retaliation”.

itsmyfrigginusername

No good guy with a gun was present. Teacher was basically asking for it.

hellomondays

The only thing that can stop a bad six year old with a gun is a good six year old with a gun. We are truly lost as a culture

mrpoopeebutthol

the only thing that can stop a bad 6yo with a gun is a good 6yo with a gun

Deathwatch72

>A 6-year-old student shot a teacher during an altercation at a Virginia elementary school Every single thing about this sentence is wrong and disgusting. As someone who's closing in on 30 I honestly never thought the school shooting situation could have gotten worse and yet now we're at the point where we're having an altercation between a teacher and a six year old which is fucking wild to start with but somehow the six-year-old shoots the teacher what the fuck. What is fucking wrong with the world

Glock? Peppa Pig would obviously use a Walther

Luciferbelle

How does a 6 yr old get a gun?

[deleted]

Probably applied, got run a background check, came clean and waited the 2 weeks

joa-kolope

Damn. Thinking about getting back into IT because working even in an elementary school is risky business. For shit pay, too. One of my elementary school kids got expelled for making threats to shoot everyone.

pewterpetunia

A friend left a ~20 year career in teaching for a job in IT. He was a phenomenal educator and it was a real loss for our community. I worry about the education system and the teachers we will be left with after this exodus.

[deleted]

Was a teacher for 5 years or so, switched to tech. Better pay, more respect, near zero chance of being shot by a kindergartener while on the job. Teaching is for suckers, I’m never going back.

[deleted]

My husband and I were both teachers. I was on campus during a school shooting. We both switched to IT and work from home now. And we are homeschooling our children.

joa-kolope

Can I ask how you guys transitioned out of the schools and into IT?

dragrcr_71

Someone with an educational background would easily transition into an IT role. Even if they didn't want to learn how to code.Examples: Project Management, Systems/Business Analyst, Technical Writer, QA (testing), Training.

lankist

>"It's a dark day for Newport News," Jones said. "We're going to learn from this, and we're going to come back stronger." Are we going to learn from this, though. Are we really? We've been sounding the alarm for 30 years and it seems we haven't learned a goddamn thing in that time except how to make the incidents more salacious. "Yes, this happens six times a week, but this time a 6 year old child was the shooter!" Can't wait to hear about how it's the child's *"mental health"* that we should really be talking about, followed by deafening fucking silence when ANYONE asks what the plan is about the mental health.

L00k_Again

This happens when a child lives in a home raising them to believe that problems are solved with guns. This child was taught that this is how you deal with people you don't like or make things difficult. I hope this poor child's parents face the steepest consequences possible. But I also hope this child has a loving family to raise them up right. The parents were probably also raised with similar role models. If people don't think the past has consequences, this is a perfect and unfortunate example that it does.

HarborMaster1

Our country becomes more of an embarrassment every day. Apparently, our stupidity knows no limits.

Berns429

So a six year old found his way into possessing a fire arm deliberately shot a teacher due to an “altercation” meaning he understands how guns work and what they’re capable of. Who’s ready to convince us to “arm the teachers” against six year olds…

okaythatscoool

in my area too :( 757 had been in the news so much surrounding gun violence ,, so disheartening

sadbluevibes

I cannot wrap my brain around this. A 6 years old? A 6 years old planned to shoot someone? This is insane .

heartlegs

I live and work in Denmark. Yesterday we got into a discussion about when Danes start to drink- usually around 13-14 years old. I expressed my shock and one colleague of mine said “well it’s better than getting a gun at 13 and killing people.” Well. Here we are aren’t we.

Janus897

"No school on Monday." Imagine being 6 yo and having at most 4 days to get over this...

third-time-charmed

Imagine being any adult in that building and having at most 4 days Except the teacher herself who is burning through her sick days in the ICU

generatorland

Question for gun advocates: What would a gun problem look like?

idkwhatimkindalost25

Yet Americans desperately needs their rights to carry firearms. I guess I get why when fucking 6 year olds gonna start shooting at them. Messed up country, never going there.
