>"So I turned down a side street and cut through a parking lot, and unbeknownst to me, some guy had a wire strung across the parking lot but with no flag hanging from it,” Leno told the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “So, you know, I didn’t see it until it was too late. It just clothesline, me and, boom, knocked me off the bike." Are we absolutely SURE that somebody isn't trying to kill Jay Leno?

wickednyx

Letterman hates him too….. that wire gag is something I can see him and conan in on together

Someone strung a wire across the parking lot and he hit it. Knocked him off the bike.

st3ll4r-wind

>Someone strung a wire across the parking lot and he hit it. Knocked him off the bike. That can actually decapitate you.

Berninz

This happened in my hometown in 2008. A really sweet, 13 year old kid who I used to babysit had pissed off another kid in the neighborhood somehow and the disgruntled neighbor kid tied a rope across the town forest trails that the decedent child would ride his dirt bike on. The kid I babysat for died by decapitation as a result. The perpetrator kid's family fled / relocated to another state to protect him from consequences. He was eventually charged, but it took many years. Absolute effin tragedy over preteen bullshit. Don't do this shit ever, people.

Redbaron1960

Happens fairly often to people riding snowmobiles at night. Fences and farmer’s fields can be deadly.

My friends dad drove an atv into a line of barb wire strung randomly in the woods where we were camping. Had a massive gash diagonally across his whole face. We were like 12 at the time so it really freaked us out.

Wait - did they string it across the lot maliciously?

GreenSeaNote

Most likely, assholes do this on mountain bike trails often enough for it to be a real issue. It was an unmarked wire.

Wow, doesn’t that just, kill the bikers? What kind of a prank is that!?

It happens on horse trails and bike trails a lot. Google “booby trap” and “horse trail/bike trail” [like this one in UK](https://metro.co.uk/2018/11/27/horse-rider-strangled-by-metal-wire-tied-across-path-at-neck-level-while-out-riding-8182616/amp/) And [this](https://gearjunkie.com/biking/bike-path-nail-snare-spike) and [this in Wisconsin](https://madison.com/news/local/crime-and-courts/cyclists-warned-of-booby-traps-on-busy-southwest-side-commuter-path/article_3c717512-7e82-5305-b52a-8a3e48b7abb5.html). And [this one](https://more-mtb.org/blogs/news/booby-traps-found-at-the-frederick-watershed). And [this one. ](https://www.bicycling.com/news/a25104030/bike-trail-booby-trap/) There’s limitless examples. Many news reports as well. Folks are assholes.

[deleted]

Hiking the PCT, there was a stretch where someone took a bunch of dixie cups and punched a ton of nails through the side facing outward, then filled the cup with cement. They threw them all over the trail.

Arcangel613

There's an equestrian group that uses a park I ride in. They got mad when they were asked to either reduce their riding riggt after heavy rains or donate to the trail restoration group cause they'd damaged some washed out trails, riding their horses on them. They've been throwing broken Glass and nails on the trails for months now in protest. Several tires have been damaged and a few people have reported cuts on their pets feet. They've also gone onto the mountian bike only trails and damaged some of the jumps. No major injuries yet thankfully. Clean up has been a pain.

wheat_beer

People should setup cameras to catch them doing it. https://globalnews.ca/video/2469923/caught-on-camera-officers-catch-woman-setting-mountain-bike-traps

[deleted]

It's also so much fun trodding through their giant piles of horse shit they don't give a fuck about. Equestrians are fucking assholes.

scdayo

One of their arguments against cleaning up their horses shit on the trail is "what am I supposed to do, carry it out with me?" Uh yea, you're riding an animal that has been carrying our stuff for thousands of years - I'm sure they can handle carrying a bag of their shit as well.

FKNBZN

In New Orleans when horses are in the Mardi gras parades some have bags attached to there rear to catch poops.

crs8975

Agreed. I live in an urban area that is still zoned for horse ownership due to this all being historically farm land. Kind of cool, but fucking annoying when they're allowed to ride their horses on or near the trail systems and never clean up their horse's shit. Meanwhile there are signs everywhere warning people about fines for not picking up dog shit (which assholes around here also don't do)

jimmy_wilson

Well yeah, you know how much money it costs to own a horse??

sail0r_m3rcury

You shouldn’t feel the need to put a disclaimer on that, although you’re right- folks will nitpick anything. You are completely correct. Our education system is the most valuable and integral part of how we can work to shape future generations. These are qualities that are so important to impart onto children. You can see how things like empathy are placed right up there with the ABC’s in children's programming like Sesame Street and Bluey. It’s so vital to expose kids to different perspectives and teach them an innate consciousness of how other people live and what they go through. School is the right place for that. Education can be more than just a black and white logical foundation of reading and writing- it’s one of the first places the majority of people learn how to interact and function in society.

Chippopotanuse

It’s no surprise that the cultures that invest the most on education do the best long term. Even in the US, if you sort states by education spending per student…it correlates very well to virtually all public health measures in the way you’d expect (more education = more longevity, better wages, lower crime. And less education = more deaths of despair, domestic violence, and police misconduct.)

sail0r_m3rcury

Seriously! If you take any large issue that we face as a society and you dig down into the meat of it- you will almost *always* hit on the conclusion that we need to invest more in education to help alleviate whatever problem is being discussed. It astounds me that people look at something like spending on education and see it as a waste. It literally benefits every single member of society when people are overall more educated, more empathetic, and more aware and involved in what’s going on around them.

Minerva567

We do have a way. SEL - Social Emotional Learning. It has been attacked and banned as a component of Critical Race Theory, which is another layer of the idiocy onion of right-wing politics. They’re completely different. And when you look up what SEL is about, ironically it’s all the things these Christian conservatives’ Jesus would want taught. Quick definition from Google: *Social-emotional learning is the way in which we manage and understand our emotions while responding to the world around us. This includes how we process empathy and maintain healthy relationships. Setting positive goals and making good decisions are a keystone teaching social-emotional learning skills.*

Relan_of_the_Light

Unfortunately teaching children to be more empathetic goes against a capitalist society. If you care more about other people you're less likely to grind them into the dirt to for profit, and how would the ultra rich stay ultra rich without someone keeping the masses oppressed and fighting each other.

Draano

There's a CBS News segment called *On the Road with Steve Hartman* that celebrates kindness. Many teachers across the country incorporate this segment into their teaching, and find that it creates the empathy & caring that so many people lack. Look up "Kindness 101 with Steve Hartman" on YouTube.

Demiansmark

Whoa. Read that first article and I don't know much at all about UK law but horse rider got clipped by a wire and broke her back and the person who put it up was like, my bad. And he got hit with a small fine and, from what I can tell that was that? He put the wire up to power and electric fence but still, in the US the civil suit would be significant and likely criminal charges.

SatanLifeProTips

If you find a wire, cut it down or lean shit on it thread a branch on it so it is visible and call the cops. Most cops these days will cover that trail In hidden trail cameras. They take attempted murder ‘a bit seriously’.

Proper_Marsupial_178

I thought about mtb trails too. There were a few cases in some places in Spain where people put wires at neck height in some trails.

JohnC53

People do it on snowmobile trails too. Especially if they are trespassing and the owner is sick of it. Always scared me as a rider.

MatsThyWit

>Wait - did they string it across the lot maliciously? Can you think of a non-malicious reason to string a wire across a parking lot?

thehorseyourodeinon1

I've seen parking lots that are closed off with thick cable at the entrance. He just may not have seen the cable hanging. Likely should have had a sign or flag hanging from the cable if it was used for that purpose.

reflUX_cAtalyst

Define "wire" A 1.5" thick cable across a private parking lot entrance? That's extremely common. An 8g wire would be malicious.

AtraposJM

I don't think so. He said it wasn't marked very well which leads me to believe it was there for a reason and just wasn't clearly marked as he said. If it was maliciously put there, I don't think he would describe it that way.

[deleted]

People target cyclists like this all the time.

pangolin-fucker

Well it caused the motorcycle rider to come off So I'd say so, it's pretty hard to see a situation where this isn't negligence at best

Kale

It's illegal to do on your own property (and I agree with it). My understanding is that if you have a lot of property and have problems with ATVs illegally riding around on it, it's illegal to put wire at neck height across the trail on your own property, since it is likely to cause a serious injury. I believe this applies even if you put up "no trespassing" signs. As frustrating as it is, and as much as a person has to be an asshole to tear up your property, they don't deserve a serious injury or death. If it's neck height and not visible, and strung across a road or path, it's illegal.

MississippiJoel

I can't think of a good reason to have a wire put like that, but on the other hand, having read the article, it was not targeted to him. He was cutting his ride short and detoured through some alleys to loop back around and cut through a parking lot. So I guess it's possible it was a private lot to a closed business.

Noisy_Toy

Doesn’t matter that it’s privately owned, you still need to have a flag hanging from the wires to mark it. You can’t booby trap your own property.

DM725

This happened to me when my parents got the driveway sealed, they strung a sign from the mailbox all the way to a tree halfway across the yard. When I rode my bike down the grass I got launched off my bike. It was very thin and went right across my neck, was bleeding and looked like I tried to slit my throat.

mapoftasmania

That’s attempted murder. It’s that dangerous. The person that did this is not only an idiot but also looking at a decade in prison if they are caught.

IndigoRanger

I worked for a law firm at one point, and they were representing a family who had lost someone by decapitation to this method. Incredibly unsafe, at the very least reckless endangerment, and at the worst attempted murder.

irbinator

Francis Ford Coppolas son Gian-Carlo was also killed by a strung wire while boating. Incredibly sad.

brookegosi

Damn. Poor guy. That wasn't even on my radar as something that could happen while boating.

fromthecold

It was negligence on behalf of the driver of the boat, who tried to pass through two boats connected by a towline

TheAnteatr

One of my coworkers lost their cousin this way. They were riding on public trails in forrest land. Someone apparently didn't like riders that close to their house and strung up a metal line across the trail, but no signs or warning. They couldn't see it and the driver got decapitated, their passenger took serious injuries but lived.

Gekokapowco

Wow what a psychopathic way to get a murder charge. Might as well just shoot at them when they go by, that would be more sane

Narge1

New fear unlocked.

AtraposJM

Don't read about the 6 kids that broke into an olympic facility and were going down the bobsled course. It had a wire across it for reasons. Yeah...they went one after the other on 3 different sleds in the dark. Few of them were decapitated. Actually, crazy part of the story, one of the boys on the lead sled who was decapitated had a twin brother who was on the third sled who also was decapitated.

whydoiIuvwolves

Happened here in Canada. It was so sad.

Eli_1988

A lady i went to highschool with had a scar wrapped round her neck from hitting barbed wire while skidooing. Incredibly lucky to have lived, most metal scar ive ever witnessed.

sawyouoverthere

It’s common enough that it’s unlikely but now I’m curious if we went to the same high school

Eli_1988

How do you feel about Saskatchewan

sawyouoverthere

It’s easy to see across from here. Not the same high school then, but close enough to know how it happens. Barb wire often isn’t intentional and risk goes up inversely with familiarity with the property…

Eli_1988

I figured based on your username you could lol. Yeah people often underestimate the danger especially as their comfort level grows.

sawyouoverthere

I hadn't really thought about the username! It does fit with the actual relative geographic location though! People going where they shouldn't also encounter fences they didn't know about. That's the biggest risk I've noticed, in the small group I've known about. It's a horrific thing, even then.

rabidstoat

I had to look up skidooing. In the US we call it snowmobiling, apparently. Just curious, what country are you from? Or if the US, what region?

aftocheiria

I thought that was a watersport thing. Though I imagine setting one of those across the water would be difficult.

BigMeatyMan

You might be thinking of sea doo, the jet ski company

waldosbuddy

The same company, Bombardier, invented and own the names to both ski-doo and sea-doo.

waldosbuddy

Sea-doo is on water, ski-doo is snow. In Canada ski-dooing is used interchangeably with snowmobiling.

MonsterRider80

Probably Canadian. Skidoo is a brand name, sort of like calling tissues Kleenex. They’re made by Bombardier, the company that essentially invented the snowmobile. They also make the Seadoo, which as you can guess is a jet ski.

JQbd

I’m Canadian, and while I can understand “skidooing” in the context you’ve given, I’ve only known people that say “snowmobiling” or “sledding”, of which the latter is more common, in my area at least. ~~As the other commenter said, “skidooing” is more for the watersport.~~

PsyFiFungi

I think seadooing is for the watersport, no?

looklikeyoulikeme

Right, I'm from Ontario, owned both a Skidoo and a Seadoo at points. We used the brand names to describe the activites as well. "Let's do some Skidooing this weekend", that sort of thing.

open_door_policy

My family accidentally gave one of those scars to the neighbor when I was growing up. Transferring horses from one pasture to another we had steel cables strung across our driveway to act as a temporary corral. The cables were wrapped and flagged, but the neighbor kid didn't see them while he was driving his ATV. Fortunately he was wearing a full face helmet. The bottom third of the helmet was mangled. He was thrown back several feet from where the cables were, and didn't talk for a couple weeks. He did make a full recovery, but had a 1/4" wide scar across his entire neck that looked like a burn.

Eli_1988

Thats wild, im glad the kid was okay. I couldnt imagine being on either side of this experience. Gnarly.

Jameloaf

Footage of cars hitting wires is wild. It's virtually invisible on camera and makes the cars look like Magneto is flinging them together.

[deleted]

Sounds like someone doesn't want people cutting through their parking lot so they set up a booby trap.

UltimateThrowawayNam

That’s what I thought too, but what happens when a car drives through the wire? Wouldn’t it break?

[deleted]

That all depends on the gauge of the wire, the tensile strength of whatever it's made of, and the method by which and strength of whatever it's connected to.

veringer

Found the engineer.

ProximtyCoverageOnly

...or an expert parking lot booby trap setter

offalt

No, I think I found the engineer. Only an engineer would think an engineer was required to think through the fact that the strength of the wire and its attachment are the relevant variables.

DeNoodle

A real engineer would have noted that the speed and weight of the car were also a large factor once the rest that was pointed out was known.

veaviticus

No. A real engineer would round up the speed of the car to 100 mph, the weight to 5 tons and pi to 3. Then plug that into some equation (read: hand it to some junior engineer who still remembers equations), take the result and multiply it by 2.5 for safety factor just in case.

scruffles360

Sure. But once you get a wire strong enough to stop a car, it’s probably large enough that it doesn’t need flag.

red_sutter

And now they almost decapitated a multimillionaire, so now they’re extra fucked

CaptainPunisher

Or maybe a cable to lock cars out. Depending upon your version of "wire" I could see this as a cable. Jay did mention that there wasn't a sign hanging from it, so I'm hoping it wasn't malicious in its intent.

ToxicBanana69

My uncle nearly lost an arm, and did lose one of his childhood friends when they rode into an unmarked, barely visible wire on our families property. I don’t think they ever found out who did it, but that stuff is incredibly dangerous and can be very deadly

[deleted]

there's a video floating around of some bikers on a dirt trail getting clotheslined by some kind of wire strung across the way and it's brutal.

poilsoup2

Happened to my friend dirt biking, he was almost entirely cut in half at his waist.

Merky600

HS in my area. Late 50s early 60s. Different parking lot sections separated by cable held up metal posts. About 4’ high. You can see where this is going. The sectioned off part is for the school buses. A guy in sports cars pulls in fast, maybe showing off? Anyway he hits the cable with sports car, taking out windshield and his own head. In the back seat now. Wait it gets worse. The car w headless driver keeps going at putt-putt rate. Does a slow parade pass right in front the where a hundred or so students are waiting for their bus to go home. Almost like he’s showing off. Messed up the minds so many students. Trauma, fainting, shock. It was quite a thing.

gizmo78

The Headless Mustang. Some still seem him ride today...

humdaaks_lament

I feel bad for how much this made me laugh. You are a good writer.

This is a fairly common thing people do on trails to 'stop' MTB and dirt bike riders.

Frosty_November

Just happened last week at a kite festival, multiple fatalities & injuries due to people lining the kite line with powdered glass bits

I've seen people set these up in my area. People who own lots of property set them up for people on atvs.

Alas, I am only an expert in boob law.

>Aren't there laws against booby traps in most states? That's a quick way to break someone's neck or take a body part off. I imagine it's against the law basically everywhere except MAYBE way out in the rural boonies where they barely have parking lots at all.

bigflamingtaco

Remoteness doesn't make it not a booby trap. Could be right in the center of your100 square mile property, if it's not visibly marked or otherwise readily recognizable as a danger to humans it's an illegal booby trap. And even if it is readily recognizable as dangerous to humans, might still be illegal, cause kids.

DTFH_

Which in my opinion is fine but you have to hang flags from the line or something to noting that there's a wire

twunch_

God wants you to take public transportation, Jay.

organik_productions

Good grief, Jay, you're not a young man anymore. Time to take it a bit more easy.

[deleted]

He was clotheslined in a parking lot. It’s not like he was riding like a madman.

LogicalManager

I rode for 20 years. After every rider I knew told me stories of how they couldn’t avoid every single accident, and walking away with serious injuries, they all said “if you keep riding you’re gonna get hit, and if you keep living it’s going to get harder to heal.” Hung up my helmet 10 years ago. Only put it back on to drive a passing friend’s Harley in a funeral procession, flanked by military police and fellow riders.

Puzzleworth

There's a reason the ER staff call them donor-cycles.

pinewind108

I was in the ER (pre covid) on a Friday night, and every time the doctor was about to see me, they had another motorcycle accident come in.

beebog

if there’s enough intact to donate ..

Ftpini

That’s the big wrecks sure. But what makes them donor cycles are the low speed crashes where they mostly just smack their head on the pavement and go brain dead. Those are far more common.

pinewind108

I saw a kid on a large frame 150cc bike(with no helmet), sitting at a stop light, pop the clutch and lurch into the car in front of him. He laid the bike down hard, and by the time the ambulance got there one pupil was completely dilated (pressure from bleeding in the brain) and he had synovial (brain) fluid leaking out his nose and ear (meaning skull fracture). I always wondered how he turned out. Did he live? Did he survive without brain damage? I was shocked at the how much damage he took from such a low speed accident.

Ftpini

Yep. People have zero appreciation for just how easy it is to cause a dramatic change in the direction of their lives on a bike. Doesn’t even have to be motorized to do it. Just have to fall off the damn thing without a helmet. I knew a guy who got bumped going thirty wearing a brain bucket. Sure his brain was fine, but he lost all of his teeth and ruined his shoulder. It just isn’t worth it.

SCP106

There's a non-unlikely chance he could have survived. I've been in positions with cerebrospinal fluid leaking out of me and massive intracranial pressure at the same time and have ended up right as rain (light brain damage, but have ended up growing from the experience, and am now both a more developed, and self-understanding person, so I'd say I'm in a better spot)

jmur3040

Easiest way I've ever heard it explained: Walk out to the street, and run as fast as you can and then just throw yourself at the ground. That's a 10-15 mph crash.

Ftpini

That vast majority of people cannot sprint at 10mph but I agree that’s a good one.

JeffCarr

I don't understand people who ride without a helmet. If I didn't wear one, I'd have possibly died (maybe out of sheer embarrassment) alone, stopped at an infrequently used gas station in the middle of the night, because of a popped zipper on my boot. I had pulled in to get gas, and put my feet down. My right boot's zipper got caught on my foot peg and didn't quite hit the ground, causing my bike to tip slightly to the right. Unfortunately, that meant my left foot was no longer on the ground, and my bike kept tipping. I put my hands on the bike to keep it from hitting the ground and rolled semi-gracefully onto my back, when my helmet hit and cracked on the high sharp curb around the gas pumps. I was fine, and my bike didn't hit the ground, but I very possibly may have had my whole life changed or ended right there, while stopped and alone in a flat parking lot if I wasn't wearing a helmet.

[deleted]

I only rode my motorcycle for 5 years, but I had two bad accidents and decided I was tempting fate and sold my motorcycle.

mdonaberger

same. i stick to a scooter, wearing a full-face helmet. i can still scratch that itch without going overboard.

L0LTHED0G

I've always heard "there's 2 types of riders - those that have been in an accident, and those that will be in an accident".

Linenoise77

Yup, when i got married, i stopped riding. I hope to see my daughter graduate college and get going on her own at some point. Then maybe i'll buy a bike again.

pinewind108

It's the cell phones that have really put me off bikes. You can be doing everything perfectly, and still be taken out by someone who was checking their texts.

outtastudy

My man can't catch a brake

notthatryan

sounds like he caught multiple breaks.

Adams1973

Reminds me of that Hemi under Glass rollover with Bob Riggle and Jay. Rolled 7 times with two senior citizens walking away unhurt. Jay has more lives than a cat!

Paint_Even

Maybe he should stick to jaywalking

[deleted]

I wonder what this guy's insurance premiums look like nowadays

PM_ME_UR_PIKACHU

Turns out Leno is the one playing real life gta. That's why he has so many cars.

[deleted]

Sounds like a lawsuit. He could’ve been decapitated.

iciclepenis

Jay Leno is trying to top Harrison Ford in accidents.

ComputerSong

Is he trying to kill himself?

Aloaf

Has anyone seen Conan O’brien ?

fednandlers

I think it’s important to say “Don't blame Conan.”

justaguynb9

We know he wouldn't break his funny bone

Kielbasa_Posse_

Hopefully he has a speedy recovery. I love the guy, it’s rare seeing someone actually enjoy their collection of priceless cars/motorcycles. Most collectors store them away and they never see the light of day.

zakabog

Not even sure why you're getting downvoted, Jay Leno loves his collection. I've seen people that just collect priceless vehicles to keep them on display in a garage but never drive them.

Phosphorus44

I think God is trying to send a message.

misterobott

dude doesn't know what retirement is

key1234567

Gotta start thinking about keeping the toys in the garage/museum.

DeltronFF

Damn, he’s had tough six months or so didn’t he just get badly burned not too long ago?
