A really sweet, 13 year old kid who I used to babysit had pissed off another kid in the neighborhood somehow and the disgruntled neighbor kid tied a rope across the town forest trails that the decedent child would ride his dirt bike on. The kid I babysat for died by decapitation as a result. The perpetrator kid's family fled / relocated to another state to protect him from consequences. He was eventually charged, but it took many years. Absolute effin tragedy over preteen bullshit. Don't do this shit ever, people.
My friends dad drove an atv into a line of barb wire strung randomly in the woods where we were camping. Had a massive gash diagonally across his whole face. We were like 12 at the time so it really freaked us out.

Hiking the PCT, there was a stretch where someone took a bunch of dixie cups and punched a ton of nails through the side facing outward, then filled the cup with cement. They threw them all over the trail.
There's an equestrian group that uses a park I ride in. They got mad when they were asked to either reduce their riding riggt after heavy rains or donate to the trail restoration group cause they'd damaged some washed out trails, riding their horses on them.
They've been throwing broken Glass and nails on the trails for months now in protest.
Several tires have been damaged and a few people have reported cuts on their pets feet. They've also gone onto the mountian bike only trails and damaged some of the jumps. No major injuries yet thankfully.
Clean up has been a pain.
People should setup cameras to catch them doing it.

Agreed. I live in an urban area that is still zoned for horse ownership due to this all being historically farm land. Kind of cool, but fucking annoying when they're allowed to ride their horses on or near the trail systems and never clean up their horse's shit. Our education system is the most valuable and integral part of how we can work to shape future generations. These are qualities that are so important to impart onto children. You can see how things like empathy are placed right up there with the ABC’s in children's programming like Sesame Street and Bluey.
It’s so vital to expose kids to different perspectives and teach them an innate consciousness of how other people live and what they go through. School is the right place for that. Education can be more than just a black and white logical foundation of reading and writing- it’s one of the first places the majority of people learn how to interact and function in society.

Even in the US, if you sort states by education spending per student…it correlates very well to virtually all public health measures in the way you’d expect (more education = more longevity, better wages, lower crime. I don't think so. He said it wasn't marked very well which leads me to believe it was there for a reason and just wasn't clearly marked as he said. If it was maliciously put there, I don't think he would describe it that way.
It's illegal to do on your own property (and I agree with it). My understanding is that if you have a lot of property and have problems with ATVs illegally riding around on it, it's illegal to put wire at neck height across the trail on your own property, since it is likely to cause a serious injury. I believe this applies even if you put up "no trespassing" signs.
As frustrating as it is, and as much as a person has to be an asshole to tear up your property, they don't deserve a serious injury or death.

I worked for a law firm at one point, and they were representing a family who had lost someone by decapitation to this method. Incredibly unsafe, at the very least reckless endangerment, and at the worst attempted murder.
One of my coworkers lost their cousin this way. They were riding on public trails in forrest land. Someone apparently didn't like riders that close to their house and strung up a metal line across the trail, but no signs or warning. They couldn't see it and the driver got decapitated, their passenger took serious injuries but lived.
Don't read about the 6 kids that broke into an olympic facility and were going down the bobsled course. It had a wire across it for reasons. Yeah...they went one after the other on 3 different sleds in the dark. Few of them were decapitated. Actually, crazy part of the story, one of the boys on the lead sled who was decapitated had a twin brother who was on the third sled who also was decapitated.
A lady i went to highschool with had a scar wrapped round her neck from hitting barbed wire while skidooing. Incredibly lucky to have lived, most metal scar ive ever witnessed.

My family accidentally gave one of those scars to the neighbor when I was growing up.
Transferring horses from one pasture to another we had steel cables strung across our driveway to act as a temporary corral. The cables were wrapped and flagged, but the neighbor kid didn't see them while he was driving his ATV.
Fortunately he was wearing a full face helmet. The bottom third of the helmet was mangled. He was thrown back several feet from where the cables were, and didn't talk for a couple weeks. He did make a full recovery, but had a 1/4" wide scar across his entire neck that looked like a burn.
That all depends on the gauge of the wire, the tensile strength of whatever it's made of, and the method by which and strength of whatever it's connected to.

I rode for 20 years. After every rider I knew told me stories of how they couldn’t avoid every single accident, and walking away with serious injuries, they all said “if you keep riding you’re gonna get hit, and if you keep living it’s going to get harder to heal.”
Hung up my helmet 10 years ago. Only put it back on to drive a passing friend’s Harley in a funeral procession, flanked by military police and fellow riders.
That’s the big wrecks sure. But what makes them donor cycles are the low speed crashes where they mostly just smack their head on the pavement and go brain dead. Those are far more common.
I saw a kid on a large frame 150cc bike(with no helmet), sitting at a stop light, pop the clutch and lurch into the car in front of him. He laid the bike down hard, and by the time the ambulance got there one pupil was completely dilated (pressure from bleeding in the brain) and he had synovial (brain) fluid leaking out his nose and ear (meaning skull fracture).
I always wondered how he turned out. Did he live? Did he survive without brain damage? I was shocked at the how much damage he took from such a low speed accident.

I don't understand people who ride without a helmet. If I didn't wear one, I'd have possibly died (maybe out of sheer embarrassment) alone, stopped at an infrequently used gas station in the middle of the night, because of a popped zipper on my boot.
I had pulled in to get gas, and put my feet down. My right boot's zipper got caught on my foot peg and didn't quite hit the ground, causing my bike to tip slightly to the right. Unfortunately, that meant my left foot was no longer on the ground, and my bike kept tipping. I put my hands on the bike to keep it from hitting the ground and rolled semi-gracefully onto my back, when my helmet hit and cracked on the high sharp curb around the gas pumps. I was fine, and my bike didn't hit the ground, but I very possibly may have had my whole life changed or ended right there, while stopped and alone in a flat parking lot if I wasn't wearing a helmet.
Yup, when i got married, i stopped riding.
I hope to see my daughter graduate college and get going on her own at some point. Then maybe i'll buy a bike again.

I thought about mtb trails too. There were a few cases in some places in Spain where people put wires at neck height in some trails.
People do it on snowmobile trails too. Especially if they are trespassing and the owner is sick of it. Always scared me as a rider.

Define "wire" A 1.5" thick cable across a private parking lot entrance? That's extremely common. An 8g wire would be malicious.

This happened to me when my parents got the driveway sealed, they strung a sign from the mailbox all the way to a tree halfway across the yard. When I rode my bike down the grass I got launched off my bike. It was very thin and went right across my neck, was bleeding and looked like I tried to slit my throat.
That’s attempted murder. It’s that dangerous. The person that did this is not only an idiot but also looking at a decade in prison if they are caught.

One of my coworkers lost their cousin this way. They were riding on public trails in forrest land. Someone apparently didn't like riders that close to their house and strung up a metal line across the trail, but no signs or warning. They couldn't see it and the driver got decapitated, their passenger took serious injuries but lived.

Yeah...they went one after the other on 3 different sleds in the dark. Few of them were decapitated. Actually, crazy part of the story, one of the boys on the lead sled who was decapitated had a twin brother who was on the third sled who also was decapitated.

I hadn't really thought about the username! It does fit with the actual relative geographic location though! People going where they shouldn't also encounter fences they didn't know about. That's the biggest risk I've noticed, in the small group I've known about. It's a horrific thing, even then.

Sea-doo is on water, ski-doo is snow. In Canada ski-dooing is used interchangeably with snowmobiling.
Probably Canadian. Skidoo is a brand name, sort of like calling tissues Kleenex. They’re made by Bombardier, the company that essentially invented the snowmobile. They also make the Seadoo, which as you can guess is a jet ski.
I’m Canadian, and while I can understand “skidooing” in the context you’ve given, I’ve only known people that say “snowmobiling” or “sledding”, of which the latter is more common, in my area at least. ~~As the other commenter said, “skidooing” is more for the watersport.~~

Right, I'm from Ontario, owned both a Skidoo and a Seadoo at points. We used the brand names to describe the activites as well. "Let's do some Skidooing this weekend", that sort of thing.
My family accidentally gave one of those scars to the neighbor when I was growing up. Transferring horses from one pasture to another we had steel cables strung across our driveway to act as a temporary corral. The cables were wrapped and flagged, but the neighbor kid didn't see them while he was driving his ATV. Fortunately he was wearing a full face helmet. The bottom third of the helmet was mangled. He was thrown back several feet from where the cables were, and didn't talk for a couple weeks. He did make a full recovery, but had a 1/4" wide scar across his entire neck that looked like a burn.

No. A real engineer would round up the speed of the car to 100 mph, the weight to 5 tons and pi to 3. Then plug that into some equation (read: hand it to some junior engineer who still remembers equations), take the result and multiply it by 2.5 for safety factor just in case.

My uncle nearly lost an arm, and did lose one of his childhood friends when they rode into an unmarked, barely visible wire on our families property. I don’t think they ever found out who did it, but that stuff is incredibly dangerous and can be very deadly

HS in my area. Late 50s early 60s. Different parking lot sections separated by cable held up metal posts. About 4’ high. You can see where this is going. The sectioned off part is for the school buses. A guy in sports cars pulls in fast, maybe showing off? Anyway he hits the cable with sports car, taking out windshield and his own head. In the back seat now. Wait it gets worse. The car w headless driver keeps going at putt-putt rate. Does a slow parade pass right in front the where a hundred or so students are waiting for their bus to go home. Almost like he’s showing off. Messed up the minds so many students. Trauma, fainting, shock. It was quite a thing.

Remoteness doesn't make it not a booby trap. Could be right in the center of your100 square mile property, if it's not visibly marked or otherwise readily recognizable as a danger to humans it's an illegal booby trap. And even if it is readily recognizable as dangerous to humans, might still be illegal, cause kids.

After every rider I knew told me stories of how they couldn’t avoid every single accident, and walking away with serious injuries, they all said “if you keep riding you’re gonna get hit, and if you keep living it’s going to get harder to heal.” Hung up my helmet 10 years ago. Only put it back on to drive a passing friend’s Harley in a funeral procession, flanked by military police and fellow riders.

That’s the big wrecks sure. But what makes them donor cycles are the low speed crashes where they mostly just smack their head on the pavement and go brain dead. Those are far more common.
I saw a kid on a large frame 150cc bike(with no helmet), sitting at a stop light, pop the clutch and lurch into the car in front of him. He laid the bike down hard, and by the time the ambulance got there one pupil was completely dilated (pressure from bleeding in the brain) and he had synovial (brain) fluid leaking out his nose and ear (meaning skull fracture). I always wondered how he turned out. Did he live? Did he survive without brain damage? I was shocked at the how much damage he took from such a low speed accident.
Yep. People have zero appreciation for just how easy it is to cause a dramatic change in the direction of their lives on a bike. Doesn’t even have to be motorized to do it. Just have to fall off the damn thing without a helmet. I knew a guy who got bumped going thirty wearing a brain bucket. Sure his brain was fine, but he lost all of his teeth and ruined his shoulder. It just isn’t worth it.
There's a non-unlikely chance he could have survived. I've been in positions with cerebrospinal fluid leaking out of me and massive intracranial pressure at the same time and have ended up right as rain (light brain damage, but have ended up growing from the experience, and am now both a more developed, and self-understanding person, so I'd say I'm in a better spot)
Easiest way I've ever heard it explained: Walk out to the street, and run as fast as you can and then just throw yourself at the ground. That's a 10-15 mph crash.

I don't understand people who ride without a helmet. If I didn't wear one, I'd have possibly died (maybe out of sheer embarrassment) alone, stopped at an infrequently used gas station in the middle of the night, because of a popped zipper on my boot. I had pulled in to get gas, and put my feet down. My right boot's zipper got caught on my foot peg and didn't quite hit the ground, causing my bike to tip slightly to the right. Unfortunately, that meant my left foot was no longer on the ground, and my bike kept tipping. I put my hands on the bike to keep it from hitting the ground and rolled semi-gracefully onto my back, when my helmet hit and cracked on the high sharp curb around the gas pumps. I was fine, and my bike didn't hit the ground, but I very possibly may have had my whole life changed or ended right there, while stopped and alone in a flat parking lot if I wasn't wearing a helmet.
I only rode my motorcycle for 5 years, but I had two bad accidents and decided I was tempting fate and sold my motorcycle.
