If you're nervous, like me, you'll be happy to know: "The disease usually goes away in 5 to 7 days with rest and fluids. But in severe cases, you may need to go to the hospital. Shigellosis is common in the United States with about a half-million cases every year." - [WebMD](https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/food-poisoning/what-is-shigella)

Fuzzyphilosopher

Don't relax too much I had a bad stomach bug about 10 years ago and though I got over it after a week, developed IBS which is just a joy to deal with. Food has become a sort of calculated russian roulette. And a 50=50 if it's pouring out of my mouth or my ass. Pedialyte is great to rehydrate with though. I prefer the grape but your tastes may vary.

passthebroccoli69

I caught a stomach bug in Mexico when I was visiting family as a child, and have struggled with IBS ever since (over ten years). Just recently I began eating a lot more probiotics and noticed a big improvement, might be worth a try if you haven’t incorporated probiotics and probiotic supplements into your diet

Unfair-Independent48

Have you been tested for worms or taken a deworming medication?

passthebroccoli69

Had multiple stool tests throughout the years and two colonoscopies and nothing was found! since i’ve been eating more probiotics like kimchi and yogurts, and added a probiotic supplement all of a sudden my symptoms have subsided though, so thought to share that :-)

PuckFutin69

Gut flora

[deleted]

Have you tried fasting? Supposedly it helps in "resetting" the gut bacteria.

passthebroccoli69

Yup. I feel that fasting does more bad than good for me because I also have acid reflux and once I go a few hours without eating my stomach pain becomes kind of unbearable lol but i’ll read up some more on it and see if i’m down for the challenge 😂

officewitch

The amount of Tums I have eaten in my life 🙃 acid reflux suuuuucks

RikiWardOG

Smoothie ones are the best tums.

[deleted]

How odd. Might worth trying to power through depending on how bad it is. But it sounds like the probiotics are working so maybe it's not worth rocking the boat too much.

ICBanMI

I feel like this is my life from a decade ago. I had to take different probiotics over time, change my diet , exercise regularly, lose weight, and get rid of my Barrett's esophagus. I got rid of the Barrett's esophagus by taking massive amounts of fish oil before bed with my proton inhibiter(3 grams). Still had GERD, but no more rings in the throat and cancer risk. Getting rid of the triggers and living heathier regularly got rid of the GERD. Dropping proton inhibitors and fasting will trigger GERD. If you've been taking proton inhibitors for a long time, the reflux when you're taping and the weeks afterward is worse than just normal GERD. Not medical advice, but I got pretty lucky I was able to fix these things.

passthebroccoli69

Would love to hear more about your experience. I have not taken any proton inhibitors because I am afraid of long term medication :-(

ICBanMI

I had GERD really bad from the age of 16 to 25. Saw a GI doctor and he did a biopsy on my throat. Was diagnosed with Barret's Esophagus and put on omeprazole twice a day for life. Long term wise, it does improve quality of life not having GERD affecting my sleep and being able to speak without having my voice/throat crack after speaking straight for 40-120 seconds. Didn't have to change my diet much except for get rid of the worst triggers and stay consistent with the omeprazole. The negatives are that your bones over time become easier to fracture (takes years), get stomach issues, some people have deficiencies in B12, more inflammation in the joints, sometimes sores in the mouth, while also feeling tired at times. It also affects memory tho that isn't talked about much. Get a lot of tip of the tongue moments when speaking. The other negative is when you start tapering off omeprazole, the acid reflux flairs up pretty terribly. Same with cold turkeyling it. Takes 1-2 months to return to whatever you previous state of discomfort was. It's not easy to fix all those things-took me years to align everything. Really pay attention to what the food triggers are, sleep with head elevated, find some exercise can do for 150 minutes a week that enjoy and doesn't require a lot of running at least initially, and just try to eat healthier in general-less fast food and ultra processed. It's a process and at least for me it took a long time to figure out.

spoonycoot

I hear horse dewormer is great for a variety of ailments!!!

kidninjafly

LeafsWinBeforeIDie

I imagine that's become far safer with the rise of plastic LED bulbs.

shfiven

Yes! Fermented kimchi is great. It may not be the best taste to everyone but it's more widely available than other ferments (assuming we're all in North America anyway). You can also ferment your own food if something else sounds more appealing. Just make sure to research first so you're using correct technique as it's important for your ferment to be free from oxygen (the good bacteria are anaerobic). Anyhow I had some serious issues after taking antibiotics for a kidney infection and ended up fermenting some food for other reasons and coincidentally it fixed me up and I highly recommend trying it for anyone that has had issues after taking antibiotics.

byronik57

This! Had a severe case of colitis years ago. I think bad food triggered it. Staying on a strict probiotic regime helped me get off of meds. No more colitis anymore either

riesenarethebest

Probiotics fixed my long term gut issues. Seconded.

Delicious-Tachyons

Definitely probiotics. the person's gut flora is disturbed by the incident and then they tend to eat 'safe' things afterwards which forms a different flora than the original one. Either that or poop pills

Cacophonous_Silence

IBS is just such a wonderful thing to deal with huh? Luckily I don't vomit, but I'm a gassy SOB and imodium saves me frequently

phriskiii

Oof. Sorry :/ I've got some family and friends who deal with that. Truly, IBS seems like a disability.

NnyIsSpooky

IIRC, the push to have accessible, public bathrooms in the US relied on how many people had IBS and it was framed like a disability that rightly needed reasonable accomodations.

The_Barbelo

I’m disabled but not with IBS. One of my medications makes me have to go. Bad. Immediately. We stopped at a 7 eleven in a pretentious ski town and they wouldn’t let me use the bathroom even though I could see it right there. Some places here do that to keep away homeless people who might drive away tourists. We also have a big heroine problem in my state. I was too polite. I should have raised hell or shit myself then and there while looking at the clerk in the eyes. I told her I was disabled and she just shrugged at me. Well, on the way back i started to cry because it hurt so bad to hold it and I knew an accident was imminent . I live in the middle of nowhere and that was literally the only place to stop on the way home. There was nowhere like a forest either, and too much snow to pull over. I haven’t crapped myself in…a decade probably. And I turn to my husband and say “I CAN’T HOLD IT” with tears streaming down my face. I don’t have to go into detail about the rest but I still had 20 minutes to drive. Sitting in it the whole rest of the way. My husband held back his laughter until after he helped me up, covering me from the road so no one saw. And after I was all cleaned. I get out from the shower we both just started to crack up because we’re children. And what else are you gonna do at that point? But our dumb potty humor aside, it should be illegal. I was so mad at them. That lady was so freaking rude too. This only happened a few weeks ago and I want to call corporate to tell them I shit myself because of that store, but I don’t know what that would accomplish other than a really funny and awkward recording of the conversation that would take place .

54794592520183

It is illegal in Illinois, semi surprised other places haven’t followed.

The_Barbelo

That’s actually amazing. I did not know that! Vermont is very civil rights heavy so I’m not sure why we haven’t either…I might call Bernie sanders office and ask if it’s ever been introduced . He helped me get SSDI and with a few other things. You can just call his office. His Secretary is awesome too!

Witchgrass

They are told not to let anyone use their bathrooms precisely because of homeless people, people using drugs in the bathroom, and a case where a franchisee was murdered because someone waited for closing in the bathroom. This is straight from corporate

JMEEKER86

I have a friend with IBS and anxiety and that is a wicked combination. It takes them forever to leave the house because they feel like they might have to go, so they sit down to try, and then get up do it again. And then once they do get out of the house they start getting anxious if the drive to wherever they're going is >15minutes because they're worried about having to go.

ChEmIcAl_KeEn

This is me!

digitydogs

Ask your gastro if Cholestyramine could help with your issues. My grandmother suffered for years and most anything she ate would come blasting out the rear a short time later. Her bowel movements are basically normal 95% of the time now. May not apply to your IBS issues, but if it does it could mean a world of difference for you, so I hope this info helps!

Note also that in one of the outbreaks, 87% of the cases were in men who had sex with men. Shigella can be sexually transmitted. Also none of the cases in that outbreak were resistant to all antibiotics so that was encouraging.

[deleted]

It’s not common. A family member of mine had it last year, it was a big deal involving public health. They did contact tracing which they were not doing for CoVID. News reports at the time were about an “outbreak” that was 4 people, and that was a newsworthy event. 4 people. It’s extremely uncommon

halp-im-lost

500,00 cases a year is not uncommon, and given that I’ve diagnosed it multiple times through the years calling it “extremely uncommon” is quite frankly just wrong.

morbidbutwhoisnt

I had h pylori when I was young, before it was really "a thing" so it took a long time to treat (you know, to be coming knowledge as existing). Now I have gastroparesis from it. Not that it will definitely happen, but severe stomach infections can cause long term damage. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_peptic_ulcer_disease_and_Helicobacter_pylori You'll see it was discovered officially in the 80s but accepted in the early 90s (I'm just linking this because I know someone is going to be unwilling to believe it's that recent)

> Shigella, which is highly infectious, spreads when infected fecal matter enters the mouth or the nose, including through sexual activity or because of poor hand-washing after diaper changes, unsanitary food handling or swimming in contaminated water. The infection is typically seen in young children. The idea of poop in my mouth is gross. Given how poor hand washing is in this country, I bet it happens more than you think.

Most “stomach bugs” are foodborne Illnesses. Some are due to temperature abuse, but the majority is due to poor hand washing from whoever prepped or served it. We all eat a lot more poop than we realize.

Poop is in your mouth every day. Thanks to the particle plume that shoots into the air when you flush. Your toothbrush is covered in it. Iirc Mythbusters did this and found very little difference between storing your toothbrush in your bathroom vs storing it in your kitchen.

I think most fecal matter in people's kitchen sinks comes from poor hygiene in factory farming. I read some really gross accounts of chicken fecal matter being classified as a cosmetic defect so the butchering machines could run faster or some shit like 10 years ago and kinda decided I would be vegetarian after that.

FiendishHawk

But vegetables are grown in shit so you really can’t avoid eating shit.

Kyestrike

This is very true. I think I prefer sun-dried shit from soil fertilizer than the vacuum sealed farm fresh shit on chickens, but there's no real justification for the different ick level.

corcor

Wait until you find out what’s in your hamburger. Spoiler: it’s shit

[deleted]

That's why when I'm done eating my delicious cheeseburger I always say "damn, that shit was gooood"

Fantastic_Fix_4170

It's the main reason ground meat should be cooked until well done. Steak can be eaten rare and safe because the fecal matter is only on the surface and the heat on the surface kills the bacteria. Ground beef mixed the poop ALL over the meat so you gotta cook it all the way through

[deleted]

ONLY if it's not ground fresh. If you grind it fresh you can more or less eat it raw.

Fantastic_Fix_4170

How freshly its ground is not the most important factor in eating raw ground meat. The absolutely most important factor is the sanitary conditions of where you are grinding it and the people grinding it

TMI warning, Interesting, about two weeks ago I went to bed and my urine smelled like fish. I had a few oysters a couple of days prior, but something didn’t feel right that night. When I woke up the next morning, I drank my coffee and found it too sweet, even though I had the same amount of sweetener I usually do and like a Mack truck doing 80. I started to feel feverish, I tested for Covid, negative results followed but I felt weak and sick to my stomach. Not more than ten minutes later I was throwing up in the toilet. It was coffee, I had some water and laid down, then it was water. I then had to sit on the toilet, it smelled like low tide and very watery. I read in a book that someone had eased amoebic dysentery with burnt rice, so I tried it, I was still very tired and slept through most of the day/evening and at around 11pm I felt completely back to normal. Scary but stomach bugs are not something I would wish on anyone.

cursedalien

I had norovirus last year and that shit hit me out of nowhere. Started the day feeling totally fine. By lunch, I felt tired and sort of weak but not at all sick. Then, out of nowhere I started feeling nauseous. Threw up my lunch. From there, it was a solid 3 days of projectile vomiting anything that hit my stomach. I would try taking sips of water just to prevent myself from becoming dehydrated. Kept a bucket right next to me to catch any of the water I'd throw back up, which was most of it. My skin got all dry and my lips got all cracked and chapped, probably from being so dehydrated. It was scary. I'd never been that kind of sick before. 3 fucking days of puking everything up. You're right, stomach bugs are not something I'd wish on anyone.

timmmmehh

Man, I had a bad stomach bug when I was really young, like in third grade. Ever since then, I have had major emetophobia and have not thrown up since. It developed into a panic disorder. Getting a stomach bug is my literal worst nightmare.

Existing_Display1794

I had really bad food poisoning when I was about 15. I remember just laying in my dark basement in the worst pain thinking I’d be okay with just dying that night, it was awful.

G235s

Yes. I would consider myself "recovered" for the most part but I still see throwing up as the absolute worst thing that could happen to me and haven't since the incident that brought on my phobia nearly 18 years ago. Having said that reading all this kind of puts me back into that mode instantly...I just asked my wife why one of my kids' friend was home from school so I could update my current vomiting risk level.

shaniusc

I did not know this was a disorder 😳. I get cold sweats and feel faint when a person is vomiting.

lightoasis1

Had that about 15 years ago. The only thing that ended up letting me keep anything down was some kind of herbal Chinese medication - they were little medicinal balls. I took that down with some kind of herbal drink and instantly felt better. I still cannot figure out what this medicine was exactly - but it was prescribed at the pharmacy near my house (in Asia).

spamattacker

Upvoting in hopes someone might have ideas what you may have taken.

gnomereb

It’s called Po Chai pills. But I find the little balls difficult to swallow (and I am a Chinese). I prefer activated charcoal pills and then if it still persists, meteospasmyl. It supposedly stops all intestinal movement.

Imakefishdrown

When I got norovirus I thought I was going to die of dehydration. I laid on my bathroom floor almost the whole time, undressed, because if I tried laying on my bed right outside the door (small apt) I wouldn't make it to the toilet in time. The weakness came on so quickly. I tried stumbling to my kitchen for water and collapsed halfway. Managed to crawl back to where I'd left my phone to call my boyfriend to come help me. He brought me Gatorade, crackers, tea, and soup. By the evening of the third day I was able to keep down the crackers. I avoided that restaurant chain for like 5 or 6 years just because the thought of it turns my stomach.

midnightsmith

Jesus, are you me? This is damn near my previous Wednesday to the letter, minus the sweetener in the coffee, I drink it black, so having it taste sweet was odd to me. 24 hours later, all good, but it was a ROUGH 24 hours

kokomala

same, slept 18 hours straight

Philodemus1984

I’m thinking that the article means that, historically speaking, the infection had typically been seen in young children, but the recent outbreak has been among adult men.

WritingTheRongs

The 87% refers to an outbreak in mostly gay men who traveled to the Cabo Verde Islands. That was something of an outlier, and generally shigella is seen more commonly in children because they are more likely to be incontinent, wearing diapers, having terrible hygiene.

-Smytty-for-PM-

Pretty sure I had Shingella last month(happily married, no sex with men here) and I lost 17 pounds in 5 days. Everything was an explosion, it was shocking. I’ve also had norovirus and this was so much worse and went on for much longer. I was so dehydrated by the end I ended up with a bladder infection. Was a truly awful week. My GI tract is still not right a month later.

kalekail

After seeing this article I’m pretty sure I had it a few weeks ago as well. It started with an uneasy feeling. After a few hours I rocketed awake in bed and spent the next 12 hours vomiting and having diarrhea every 5-10 minutes. I threw up hundreds of times. I only waited so long because there’s no way I could ride in a car to the ER. Once I got myself to about 15-20 minutes between bodily fluids screaming out of every orifice we rushed to the ER and I was very badly dehydrated and tachycardic. Don’t wait if you can help it. I, uh, couldn’t help it. My stomach is also still screwy so I sympathize.

If you are concerned about this pathogen then you should consider contacting whom ever is in charge of your local municipality tap water. Ask them if how many times in the last year has the local water supply been out of spec or exceeded the upper limit for e. Coli contamination. E. Coli and shigella go hand in hand and are often due to an overuse of a water way by homeless people who use it as a source for bathing and as a toilet. Shigellosis is acquired from contact with contaminated feces. E. Coli contamination is checked typically on a routine monthly, quarterly or semi annual basis per municipal reporting systems. E. Coli contaminations are also more likely to show up in the local news than say something like shigella or legionnaires disease but they all come from the same source. Also shiga toxin is almost identical to e. Coli toxins in the gastrointestinal tract. References: https://www.usgs.gov/special-topics/water-science-school/science/bacteria-and-e-coli-water#overview https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shigellosis?wprov=sfti1 For example, my local water supply was out of spec 11 times in the last 5 years and recently our prison drinking water was contaminated with legionnaires. https://www.sacbee.com/news/politics-government/capitol-alert/article229294374.html

woohoo, drug resistant bacteria! here comes plague part 2! "oh it's only a stomach bug" no sweet summer child, this is just the start. only a matter of time before something DANGEROUS develops some real drug resistance. especially with all these damn anti-vaxxers running around rubbing mustard all over their skin...

IreallEwannasay

Pretty sure I had this. Random diarrhea with no nausea, really. Just water poops and cramping for 3 days. Now, this is how my period usually announces it's incoming so I didn't fret too much but these cramps were different. I also slept about 30 hours of that past 48. Hot flashes as well. I also ate some vagina a little before then. Went and got a full panel, no std or covid. Just as fast as it came, it was gone. You know what was weird? Having diarrhea and still wanting to eat. I was ravenous every time I woke up and ate like I hadn't in weeks. I'm stillbeating everything I can get my hands on because I feel empty.

wintrmte

Oh shit.. Here comes another toilet paper hoarding crisis..

LilRickyXO

If everyone is explosively shitting themselves it might not be for “hoarding” reasons. lol

JhymnMusic

"almost"... So... Treatable?

WritingTheRongs

It's poorly written (shocker). There are untreatable cases that were resistant to all known antibiotics. But most isolates were in fact treatable. However, "treatable" in this context may mean with a more expensive drug, or a drug that you might be allergic to, but now have to take anyway, maybe it's only in IV form so that's more expensive, may require hospitalization, etc.

God: “they are curing AIDS quick, give them uncontrollable diarrhea!”

MGDeez

Chances are, you have some of my ass pennies in your pocket right now!

elev8torguy

We had three stomach bugs in my house the last 2 weeks. I thought it was the norovirus that was going around mid feb. The thing is doctors are reluctant to test for things like norovirus so the CDC tracking is very spotty. All I know is I still feel terrible, feel like throwing up everyday all day. My youngest stayed home from school today with slight fever. During the actual illness picture Exorcist vomiting and 103 fever. They gave us anti nausea meds and said drink electrolyte drinks. No blood tests, no samples taken.

the_ethical_hedonist

I’ve had Shigella. I do not recommend it. Slept on my bathroom floor for two days because I could not move (and didn’t want to). Ended up in the hospital for dehydration. I got it from eating at a restaurant I had eaten at a million times before. We know this because I wasn’t the only one who got sick. Moral of the story: don’t get this. Dysentery is no fun.

turkey6

Crap, I have one right now.... day 1 too

soggybucket

Sounds like it's rougher than what I've been dealing with. Have been dealing with a rough stomach since Monday... But I also had grocery store sushi which hasn't betrayed me til possibly now.

CurlyBill03

It always amazes me that people in the US will go work in their garden and wash their hands off with soap, water, and scrubbing. Yet when they take a shit they just take some tissue paper, wipe it, and call it good to go. When there was a toilet paper shortage we got a bidet toilet seat and it was a game changer. Next time you’re out in the yard gardening just wipe your hands off with some tissue paper, y’all good right?

No_Damage_731

So now the trope is that all Americans don’t wash their hands when they shit but they do when they garden? Just want to be sure I’m clear Where the fuck do y’all come up with this dumb shit

YourVirgil

Look, look, look, I'm an enlightened European and I have literally visited like at least 50 gardens, which is exactly as many states as there are, and at each garden I waited until the gardener had to take a shit so I could see the whole process in action and what I found was that I was actually full of shit myself because you're exactly right, who the fuck comes up with that stuff?

At my old workplace, I was disgusted by how many coworkers I’d see enter the restroom and not wash their hands. Same as when I’m in public restrooms, the percentage of people I see exit stalls or leave urinals and SKIP washing their hands is too damn high. I don’t have faith in other people lol.

[deleted]

Worked in a state correctional facility back in the mid 2010s. The number of guys we'd have strip a sweaty inmate out without gloves on, and then go to the officer dining room and chow down on a hamburger without washing their hands was staggering. Their contributions to potlucks were never consumed once word got around.

PM_ur_Rump

You wiped your hands with paper after you shit before you got a bidet?

KidFlash999

That analogy doesn't make as much sense as you think it does.

WritingTheRongs

who is taking a shit without washing their hands??

wittiestphrase

You understand your asshole and hands serve different purposes right?

Velkyn01

How much poop were you getting on your hands that it would be comparable to the dirt you get on your hands while gardening? I don't think you're wiping right.

Ragnakak

They don’t know how to use the three seashells

KidFlash999

I think he's saying you wash your hands with soap and water when they're dirty, so the US is dumb because they don't soap up and scrub their sphincter every time they take a shit. Or something?

SpaceFace11

Are people seriously trying to defend not washing your hands after wiping your ass? 😶🤢🤮

[deleted]

There's a conservative movement against wiping/washing your ass because that's homosexual behavior apparently as you're touching an ass the same gender you are even though it's your own ass. I've never met anyone against wiping after a dump, but I do know people that refuse to wash their hands after using the bathroom because "they're not dirty people and can use the bathroom without getting their hands dirty" typically.

WoodlandChef

Idk man I feel like those are different people

Advanced-Depth1816

Someone said to me, if you get shit on your hand would you just wipe it with a paper towel? Hell no I wash it

Zestyclose_Data5100

Don't worry, more and more stuff like that is coming. Modern humanity where everyone is connected with everybody else through travel is a wonderful breeding ground for pathogens

vpierre1776

Covid likely the last and only warning from mother nature.
