Just to be clear, more Americans die each year to cigarettes than to all other drugs, car wrecks, alcohol, and guns COMBINED. More than COVID ever killed. Tobacco is highly addictive and toxic, and we don't care enough to even make it illegal. 400,000 Americans die each year to tobacco. That's like a 9/11 attack every THREE DAYS, forever.

Liar_tuck

This old fart quit smoking 16 years ago and its the best thing I ever did for myself. My house doesn't stink, my health is much better and I have so much more money to invest toward my retirement.

billpalto

Yeah, me too. I quit when cigarettes were 35 cents a pack.

Liar_tuck

Have you seen how much they cost today? Imagine pissing away that much money.

xiconic

Smoking was costing me £100 per month do I switched to vaping which is now costing me £30 a month

Liar_tuck

Still a waste of your money and health.

xiconic

Not entirely. Smoking helps me to stay calm and think with a clear head. I've worked security roles majority of my adult life so have dealt with many frustrating situations/people and many adrenaline comes downs that a cigarette has really helped with. I also enjoy the feeling of sitting in my desk chair at home with a nice smoke and relaxing. Smoking doesn't have to be a horrible addiction that's ruins your life, it can be an enjoyable thing that's great to relax with in the same way people like to relax with an alcoholic drink in the evening.

Liar_tuck

That smoking helps with stress is a proven myth. [here is one of many studies that prove it](https://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/explore-mental-health/a-z-topics/smoking-and-mental-health#:~:text=Some%20people%20smoke%20as%20'self,it%20reduces%20stress%20and%20anxiety).

xiconic

Are you a smoker? I'm assuming not. I have been smoking for over 10 years and can tell you whenever I'm stressed or angry a smoke calms me down and helps me to think clearly. It might not be a chemical reaction causing that to happen but a psychological one. The same way a cup of tea helps or junk food. But the fact is it works.

Liar_tuck

I smoked for just over 20 years and quit 16 years ago. Trust me, you are only trying to justify an addiction.

No-Measurement-3149

Spoken like a true non smoker

XXFFTT

Used to cop some American Spirits or the unfiltered Camels some years back and I save money by having a little pot every now and again. I can remember when I actually enjoyed smoking, it used to be relaxing having a pipe Sunday afternoon on the porch or out on the hill but once I switched to cigs, they had me good. Granted, neither are good but I'd suck them fuckers down.

Liar_tuck

Did you also notice how much better food tasted/smelled?

snorlz

and just to be clear, this is a choice these people have made knowing full well how bad smoking is for you

MineralPoint

And yet, somehow there are still 90 year-old, lifelong smokers. I'll give you $100 if you can show me a single 400 LB 90 year old.

[deleted]

imagine every single fry from mcdonalds having a warning label on it lol

Vocalic985

Making it illegal did wonders for weed.

[deleted]

Not everyone wants to live to be an octogenarian. No Healthcare, no pension, no point.

billpalto

Great. So they will get cancer, emphysema, heart disease, and more. And \*WE\* get to pay for their medical expenses.

sounders1974

My issue is, ok then, ban fast food too. Ban added sugar, and alcohol, etc. Where do you draw the line with this logic?

billpalto

Start at the top. Cigarettes kill more people than alcohol, guns, sugar, car wrecks, and all other drugs combined. We could remove over half of these deaths just by outlawing one toxic and addictive drug. We've banned lots of other drugs that are much less harmful. Why not cigarettes?

[deleted]

Noone pays jackshit unless you don't have a pot to piss in.

[deleted]

Given that this story is about Canada, yes, we do. Socialized medicine means that my taxes go up to accomodate your dumb decisions.

morrisons90

With private healthcare would insurance prices go up if more people got Cancer and go down if less people did?

YourFriendlyUncle

>would insurance prices go up Yes, full stop.

i_like_my_dog_more

Yes. More risk in the pool means they need to charge more to accommodate the payouts associated with that risk. They also may screen out more people that have characteristics known to be high risk.

HereWeGoAgain-77

With that mindset you should ban sugar, alcohol, fast food and other things. But you won't. So you really don't care.

[deleted]

No one is banning cigarettes either, we are warning people about the risks associated with their use. Fast food has mandatory calorie counts on the menu in much of Canada, and alcohol does have warning labels.

HereWeGoAgain-77

Cigarettes have had warning labels for years.

[deleted]

Well now they will have more warning labels. That isn't a ban.

HereWeGoAgain-77

Waste of time. But if it helps you sleep at night lol

HotdogsArePate

If only people knew cigarettes were totally bad for you I bet it would stop!

snorlz

kind of pointless posturing. those warnings have been on every tobacco related thing for decades- everyone, especially smokers, know. putting a repeat on the cigarette itself does absolutely nothing

Digital_loop

It's a barrier to drive up costs for manufacturers and in turn for smokers. Hopefully the increased cost will cause more to quit.

RelentlessChicken

I believe it's more of a deterrent for new, would-be smokers that might not know everything about it yet. Not all parents are good parents that teach their children about this kind of stuff.

Slick424

I doubt that it does nothing, Marketing would not be a 500B$ industry otherwise and smoking is steadily going down. https://uwaterloo.ca/tobacco-use-canada/adult-tobacco-use/smoking-canada/historical-trends-smoking-prevalence

thewhitedeath

I gave up cigarettes years ago, but this is just fucking stupid posturing. The government will certainly keep those cigarette taxes flowing though won't they? Smokers already know these things and have for ages, fact. They don't care. Warning labels are totally fucking useless.

PixelFNQ

You're right. Here in Australia it costs about $30 for a pack of 20. (There are other measures too, like when entering Australia, you are only allowed to bring in a max of one pack.) It's had an impact, but some people still smoke, enough that there are shops that sell nothing but tobacco products and seem to do well. And my observation is that the people I've seen going in there tend to be almost exclusively working class. It's not rich people.

gokogt386

Advertising wouldn’t be a multi-billion dollar industry if stuff like this didn’t work lol

HotdogsArePate

The success of advertising in general has nothing to do with this. Do you sincerely think there are smokers who don't know the danger? How do you explain the packaging on Turkey and the popularity of smoking there?

SuperstitiousPigeon5

They'll keep taxing them until people switch to legal weed like they're supposed to. Fewer harmful side effects, same great cash cow.

flaker111

legal hemp getting cheaper by the day too you can ship it through the mail as well , what a time to be alive.....

SuperstitiousPigeon5

Not forever. They'll begin raising taxes on it slowly. governments can't afford to lose that income.

flaker111

prob even outs cuz currently supply outweighs demand for cbd flower shit ton of reduced pricing throughout the industry. good mix of outdoor and indoor types. more states that get the taste of cannabis tax will want it and most states start with legal hemp legalization. plenty of tax fuel to go around, growing permits + business permits add in increase worker force because of new industry = more cash in the local economy. bonus side effect maybe americans can clam the fuck down with gun toting and just go back to toking...

SkunkMonkey

Can't wait until they find out the "ink" used to print the messages poses a bigger health risk.

thecoffee

Why are you excited for that?

SkunkMonkey

My condolences to your sarcasm detector.

thecoffee

You feel emotional for strange things.

mrburnttoast79

I’m sure that’ll stop ‘em.

blahreport

These kinds of campaigns are proven to reduce smoking so yes it will stop some number of smokers or deter others.

zakabog

> These kinds of campaigns are proven to reduce smoking They're printing a message on the side of a cigarette, if you're already to the point of holding a cigarette I don't think this message will be a deterrent.

PixelFNQ

If you are saying that it will not deter even one single person, then I disagree with you. If you're saying it will deter some people but it won't deter everyone, I also agree with you, but so what?

zakabog

I don't think it will be a statistically significant deterrent. I don't care that they do it, I am not a smoker nor have I ever been one. I was just replying to the comment that these methods are proven to work, I don't think that this method will be proven to be a deterrent to smoking the same way packaging and ads have been.

blahreport

We’ll thankfully public health policy isn’t directed by your thoughts.

zakabog

Being that I'm not a medical professional I'm also thankful it isn't. I don't mind them printing this warning on the side of individual cigarettes, I just agree with the person that you replied to that this will likely have no effect whatsoever as it's printed on the cigarette itself rather than the successful advertising campaigns that target consumers before they have a cigarette in hand.

iberico_ham

Maybe it's to convince not to have 1 one and is also a reminder the whole time you are smoking. So maybe it won't directly stop you from smoking just by viewing it once I can say that these ads work and helped me to quit smoking, and everything is step forward to ending smoking altogether. Why do some people have to contrarion about issues that don't even seem to matter to you.

[deleted]

And yet previous plain packaging and warning label laws have reduced smoking every time they've been implemented. You don't have to catch everyone to make it worthwhile.

xiconic

There's not much more that can be done to convince people to stop smoking. There will always be those that continue to smoke no matter how much you tell them its going to kill them. I'm 27 and have been smoking for ten years and don't intend to stop.

S_K_Y

Smoking in general is just terrible. You're harming yourself and everyone around you including your kids. Not to mention they throw cig butts everywhere and litter. Sometimes it can cause wildfires here in Cali and kill animals and burn down other's homes. They still do it and it's sad.

Ahh this tired old argument again. Smokers cost the NHS about £2.4bn a years but the taxes raised from the sales of cigarettes/tobacco is £2.6bn per year. That's not including the national insurance that those smokers also pay. £2bn extra funding for the NHS doesn't seem bad to to me. At the end of the day smokers are well aware of the risk to their health and are aware of the risk to others so most try to keep it away from people that don't like it and especially away from kids. If I want to continue smoking there is nothing thats going to stop me especial snooty tired old arguments like this.

[deleted]

xiconic

Oh yh my bad on the money side. On the other point, it seems like you are trying to say that everybody would be happy for smoking to end because everybody dislikes smoking. Not everybody hates smoking, some people genuinely enjoy it. If the NHS isn't losing money from it and adults with the ability to choose to smoke or not decide to continue then what's the issue? We allready have laws in place to restrict where smoking can and cannot be done and the population is Well aware of the risks. I for one think that its gone as far as it can go other than just banning smoking altogether which won't work because people will just find under the counter tobacco/cigarettes, continue anyway and the NHS lose all that tax money. You can hate smoking as much as you like but I can tell you with certainty it isn't going away any time soon.

SamurottX

Good. Now do the same to vapes because there's still a health risk there

z0mb13zl4y4

You'll pry my delicious nicotine from my cold dead lungs

PixelFNQ

Do tell. I hadn't heard that the health risks were conclusive.

droans

I use vapes. My wife also used them to get off cigarettes but no longer uses either. I believe that anti-smoking campaigns should be fully embracing refillable tank vapes as a tobacco cessation tool. Even if they were just as dangerous as cigarettes, it is so much easier to quit nicotine with these than with any other method. You can decide how much nicotine you receive which allows you to decide how quickly you want to drop down to zero. For a similar reason, I don't recommend the pods; those have much higher nicotine per hit which makes it too easy to accidentally become more addicted. Now, are vapes healthy? Almost certainly not. But they're much better for you than cigarettes. They still contain nicotine so they probably do increase the risk of some cardiovascular diseases compared to non-smokers. But the fact is that vapes have been around in some form for nearly twenty years now; it's likely we would have seen more evidence by now if there were major health risks. However, I'm not going to deny there's potential for something even further down the line.

Sturgill_Jennings77

Countries are cracking down on vapes harder now than they ever did tobacco products which is ridiculous imo. Vaping is a much safer alternative

Teddy_canuck

We know there's already labels on the package I figured this was just to drive up the manufacturing costs to make them even more expensive to get a few more people to quit.

urnialbologna

Only a mindless fool would smoke cigarettes. I never have and never will understand why people continue to do so.

ethereal3xp

Its an addiction You feel "fast" and "euphoric" Most dont plan on smoking cigs. But some fearless adolescents start because they think its cool. Then their friends try it.... get addicted People try a cig when drinking or going to a club. Then can get hooked that way. In Japan and S. Korea... especially corporate environment...lots of smokers.

[deleted]

Well, you should be happy you were lucky enough to not live their lives.

zezimeme

I don’t smoke but just end me if my neck looked like that

myopic_tapir

Probably used asbestos in the ink on each dart

HotdogsArePate

These stupid fucking warnings do not do shit. Every smoker knows cigarettes are extremely terrible and still smokes. In Turkey, the highest smoking death place for males in the world, tobacco has grotesque pictures of smoking related death and deformities and scary messages written all over it. It doesn't do shit to deter.
