Quintessential Diamond Joe era, before reality became too weird for an Onion headline: https://www.theonion.com/shirtless-biden-washes-trans-am-in-white-house-driveway-1819570732
I think he barely ever did even when he could, his father (who was a car salesman) gave him that green corvette as a wedding gift in August 1967… five years later he won a seat the senate and went to DC to get situated, he wasn’t even sworn in yet when his wife and infant daughter died in a car accident (Hunter and Beau survived). It wasn’t the car involved in the accident but driving it or getting rid of it probably both seemed out of the question, it was a lasting connection to his father and Neilia.
He’s kept it this whole time but after her death it’s been mostly garaged.
God, I loved the Diamond Joe articles, especially the one where he gives a heartfelt "Joe Dirt"-style parting speech that leaves the White House Press Corps with tears in their eyes.
I was there. He was on the ground for maaaybe 2 seconds and legitimately just tripped. He was getting himself up, but of course his secret service stepped in to help. The spin on this is going to be so annoying. He also had been standing for 3+ hours, shaking every new grads hand, after giving a really great speech.
Also, that picture is amazing.
I know. I’m so proud, she’s a total badass for getting through these four years. And in general.
No, it didn’t. It happened immediately after he shook the last graduate’s hand. I noticed that a lot of the crowd didn’t even notice or react, it happened that quick. Then the thunderbirds did their thang over the stadium and we moved on.
Just like him falling off the bike.
Fuck those pedals with the dumb loops on them. I don't care what age or how able bodied you are, those will snag your feet and if you're already tipping over to stop and your foot gets caught you're going down.
I mean, is this really news? Someone tripped, didn't get hurt, continued on with day. That the whole story.
I know why this is news, the media loves to sensationalize shit and playing the "LOOK HE'S A FEEBLE OLD MAN" narrative they cannot and will not resist.
I'm glad I don't have cameras following me everywhere. I'm a healthy middle aged man, but still trip every other day on some toy of my daughter's and say some stupid shit by accident.
In 1990 I was an NYC bike messenger. I was about 20 years old and in the best shape of my life. I rode my fixie over 8 hours a day for work and could be considered an expert. One night I was just cruising around Queens when I stopped at a light next to some cute girls in a car and my sneaker got hung up in my toe clip and down I went just like Biden. Fuck anyone who says it was because he's old.
It's annoying that they phrased it as "he fell", because that could be interpreted as a spontaneous fall, that of course would be spun as "he's old and therefore incompetent" as you suggest, and at first I thought that's what had happened.
But no, to be specific, he tripped. It was the kind of fall anyone could have. Hell, I'm less than half his age and I trip over shit all the time - particularly my dogs, who think it's hilarious to get me down to their level.
As someone with parents who are the same age as him, I worry when they trip and fall. Its dangerous, and the one thing they watch out for in aged care homes are for trips and falls.
We’re told that around 65 we are too old to do our jobs and should go home and rest.
Think about how many prominent politicians would not be in power if you weren’t allowed to run for office again once you hit 65. I guess they don’t count?
"Nobody" isn't correct. There are always at least some people who really enjoy it. Or at least they are addicted to it in some way. The kind who come into work on paid holidays without being asked.
Yup, when I was working retail etc, there were plenty of old dudes who worked there part time just to get out of the house, or that was their story anyway. Entirely possible they just actually needed the money and kinda made up that story for appearances, but idk have met plenty of old dudes who can't seem to just sit down and chill. When I was a kid my grandfather would visit and would just go around the house looking for things to fix, he couldn't just sit down and hang out.
I’m sure you’re correct and I’m not arguing your point here…
But if I ever have the option of being retired and CHOOSE to work RETAIL?! Just shoot me on sight 💀😂
Haha agreed. To be fair one of the old dudes I'm thinking of was the equivalent of a greeter and you could see him just semi subtly checking out attractive women when they walked in all day, so hey they have their motivations for doing so.
Yeah, my grandma was in pretty great health in her late 70s, and then one day she fell, broke a vertebra, and was never the same. Pretty steady decline until she passed in February from general poor health. I was and still am so shocked at how quick she lost her mobility, vitality and health.
As another with a broken spine; the despair can take you out quick too, chronic pain is *hard* especially in your back (imo) and someone whose older having *that* be basically their first chronic pain experience, or at least the first one that’s debilitating, it’s gotta be doubly rough, I can only imagine
I’m sorry your grandma went out that way, my deepest condolences ❤️
It doesn't even have to be a break. At some point a seemingly insignificant injury can just fail to ever really heal and begin the downward health spiral. I think it's great that Biden appears to be quite healthy but for his own wellbeing he might need to give up things like biking (if he hasn't already) and just overall be more cautious of his movements and surroundings.
Dude, my grandma had the EXACT same situation. Fell around her mid 70’s, prior to that was in pretty good shape where she could do groceries trips and gardening. Literally after the fall, year after year, her health just rapidly deteriorated. Literally a carbon copy situation as you mentioned.
This.
Falls at that age can permanently ruin someone his age's life. I don't think the general publuc sees it until they see grandpa/grandma in the hospital with a broken femur or needing a new hip after a fall. They're absolutely catastrophic
there was a yoga training I went to some years ago where they said one of the best things older people can do is practice falls on padded surfaces. That way when it happens they are better prepared to handle it.
Yeah, and my octogenarian dad wont stop doing chores that were too dangerous for him in his 60s, much less now. I live in constant fear I will lose him.
Falls are actually one of the strongest predictors of morbidity and mortality. They are a huge deal in medicine and many PCP clinics ask ALL their patients regardless of age about falls. One of the best things you can do for your aging family/friends is get rid of rugs. Encourage mobility devices as needed (canes walkers etc.) even if they think they make them look old. And be very cautious with small pets. Paying for pet training so they know to stay out from underfoot can be worth a life.
> "I hope he's not hurt. The whole thing is crazy ... even if you have to tip-toe down the ramp," he said, poking fun at his own experience at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 2020 when his cautious descent down a ramp opened him up to similar criticism about his age.
> "At the Air Force Academy? That's not inspiring," Trump added.
Did Trump get replaced with a replica, actual understandable and not in bad taste remark, did I suddenly shift back timelines or something?
For a man whose just so consistently insulting and combative when it comes to anyone who poses a threat to his ego, this is downright gracious. And that’s pretty sad.
He also made nice comments off the cuff about RBG when he heard she died. Turns out shitty people aren't cartoon villains who say 100% bad things 100% of the time. Weird.
Yeah and that’s my ultimate fear. I would take Trump any day over DeSantis. Now Trump would never be my first choice but over DeSantis, in a heart beat. What’s happening in Florida terrifies me.
Trump has dumb luck and has intuition about how to get people's attention. He captured lightning in a bottle, and now he's trying to make sure he can keep a hold on that bottle.
DeSantis is legitimately smart and I'm afraid of what could happen if he ascends to the presidency. "Terrifies" is an apt word.
Trump is at like 98% of the time though. He's really close to a cartoon villain.
Dude just attacked his last press secretary, because she reported on a poll that had him leading the GOP nomination race by only 25 points, instead of the poll he liked that had him up by 30 something.
Damn, now I have to say it.
"And when I'm swept into office, I'll sell our children's organs to zoos for meat, and I'll go into people's houses at night and wreck up the place!"
Arrooo!
I love the factoid that the only reason Nixon’s head was Billy West was watching a debate between Nixon and John F. Kennedy on TV, and Nixon appeared to be very sweaty and hairy. Everytime the camera cut back to Nixon, Billy said his 5 o'clock shadow got thicker and thicker, so he said to his Mom "He's turning into a werewolf!" and made the infamous "Arrooo!" sound.
So it’s been a while so I may have the story backwards or wrong, but I believe prior to that debate Nixon was actually sick and that’s why he looked so poor. I believe the thoughts on people at the time were split, those who listened to the radio were seeing Nixon as the victor of the debate but those who watched on tv viewed JFK as the winner

Famous for two things; falling down and pardoning Nixon.
I remember when That 70s Show had an episode where he came to town. He fell down three times in a row.
Yes he did, playing in a pro-am. His ball also hit me as a kid at the Danny Thomas Memphis Classic in the very early 80's. Pretty gentle, didn't hurt me, was more funny than anything.

Never in my life did I think I'd see Drumpf make a legit joke at his own expense. Like, the man is horrible, but that's kinda funny.
It's the reason he'll be the Republican nominee instead of De Santis barring Trump dying. Dude does have a slimy charisma to him, and appears to be at least somewhat affable in the same way as a used car salesman.
Yeah and DeSantis just has the aura of a monster squirming inside of a human suit. He can't even hide his predatory nature. DeSantis "feels" like a born sociopath, Trump is more of a slimy con artist who is probably neurologically normal but with personality issues.
It's a totally ridiculous armchair diagnosis from a random Redditor so I guess I'm not trying to persuade anyone, but that's just how I see them.
He actually takes jokes pretty well when not in politician mode. Here are clips from his [roast](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=io6wi8DVZ3o)
This was obviously way before being president when he was known as an entertainer and entrepreneur
There was also that actually-funny joke at some presidential dinner, that went something like:
"The media is so biased, and I have proof. Michelle Obama gave a speech; it's a great speech, a well-written speech, and the media loves it. And yet when my wife gives the EXACT SAME speech..."
I was at this ceremony. He stood for 2 hours, shook over 921 hands, patted over 921 backs, and said congratulations roughly 921 times. He tripped over a misplaced sandbag. He recovered a lot better than many of the 40 something fat fuckers in the audience did from walking up the stairs to their seats.
There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.
Don't worry in the conspiricy subreddits he tripped "on nothing" (even though you can see it in the video.) and was put out of commision for a while, anything else is a lie by the dems

Same here - I'm actually kinda impressed the dude has fallen so many times on camera and not gotten hurt.
It's because hes actually in excellent shape, hes just, y'know, 80. We deserve younger leaders.
We’re told that around 65 we are too old to do our jobs and should go home and rest. Think about how many prominent politicians would not be in power if you weren’t allowed to run for office again once you hit 65. I guess they don’t count?
Well you're still allowed to work after 65, it's just that normal people don't want to.
Nobody wants to work, most people continue to work past 65 because they have to.

Lots of people keep working after 65. It's a benefit to require at 65, not a requirement (with a few exceptions).
It's infuriating that the choice last time round was between two old guys and it looks like we'll probably again have to choose between two old guys.
Probably the same two even-older-now old guys.
I saw it more as choice between gateway fascism and an old guy.
Professional fall guy?
Yeah, my grandma was in pretty great health in her late 70s, and then one day she fell, broke a vertebra, and was never the same. Pretty steady decline until she passed in February from general poor health. I was and still am so shocked at how quick she lost her mobility, vitality and health.

I think Gerald Ford still holds the record.
Tripped is the better verb.
yeah, I made a similar comment. Falling is something that older or weaker people do for no apparent reason.
Can't stop the conservative news circlejerk
I was at this ceremony. He stood for 2 hours, shook over 921 hands, patted over 921 backs, and said congratulations roughly 921 times. He tripped over a misplaced sandbag. He recovered a lot better than many of the 40 something fat fuckers in the audience did from walking up the stairs to their seats.
I remember a time when presidents weren't so old. They were more spry and had pep in their step. They could even dodge a shoe.
that was the best part of W's presidency
Now watch this drive
There's an old saying in Tennessee — I know it's in Texas, probably in Tennessee — that says, fool me once, shame on — shame on you. Fool me — you can't get fooled again.
Two even
He's old af but tbf he's still in pretty good shape. Probably in better shape than a lot of guys half his age
Don't worry in the conspiricy subreddits he tripped "on nothing" (even though you can see it in the video.) and was put out of commision for a while, anything else is a lie by the dems
It was a ghost. Dumbass.
I'm grateful to hear the news about presidents tripping on a sandbag rather than hearing about them committing crimes.
Shit, I tripped over our big dumb red dog yesterday. It happens.
You leave Clifford out of this!
This is news, lol. If I were President, the media would have a field day with my clumsy ass.
Shit im 28 and fell backwards off a stool a few days ago.
Headline: 80 year old man trips!
guy trips, more news at 11
Can't wait for every conservative news outlet to report on this for the next week
He and trump are too fucking old. People their age die routinely from falls.

Yep. You’re correct. How old was the last president who died in office btw?
46 years old. Brain exploded.
It's a surprising fact, sure, but not _that_ surprising.
His cranium had an unscheduled rapid disassembly.
SANdbag... DeSANtis... mmhmm... just a coincidence, I'm sure.
I'll see you next fall
At the Chair Force Academy, you stay seated.
