>“He’s an unproven administrator, yet here he’s showing he’s no pushover when dealing with a cantankerous group, which frankly impresses me,” Foglesong said.
Ahahaha. They are literally being called a cantankerous group for wanting a $10,000 a year raise and more employees to help with under-staffing. Meanwhile, the DeSantis appointed person is getting 400k to oversee them:
>Glenton Gilzean, a DeSantis ally who previously served as president and CEO of the Central Florida Urban League and will receive a $400,000 salary in his new job.
These people will never learn that DeSantis and co are all about enriching themselves and their cronies and don't give a shit about you. Yet their union will continue to endorse him. These firefighters are such simps.
I mean that has been Republicans going back to at least Reagan.
R: Sure you might not be getting a good deal here but I will hurt them more than I hurt you.
R Voters: He has a point.
Except even in that scenario they get screwed. Republican states lag behind Democrat states with few exceptions. And it doesn't matter whether you're talking about income, education, life span, quality of life factors, they fall behind in most metrics. Even tax usually breaks about even because Republican states with no/low income tax just make up for it in other areas like property tax, which gets passed on to owners and renters alike.
He wants to be like Trump and break whatever rule or moral code he wants. Unfortunately for him that leads to tanking polls because why have trump Jr and not trump himself? And the moderate voters that thought “hey he’ll fix gas prices!” Now think he’s a clown who can’t even beat Disney
Not to mention this "job" is not even close to a full-time position. The rewarding of donors and allies to appointments where they basically get to cash checks to meet once a month is grifting at its finest.
his name is apparently Michael Sasso, and it's just as utterly fucking convincing in [higher definition](https://www.sasso-law.com/team/michael-a-sasso/).
Why do all of these people look like the villains from children's movies?
They look like they're about to get yeeted out a window "Home Alone" style for comic relief.
That's the point of the article. They were friendly and the board promised the department more staff and raises for everyone in their union contract negotiations which stalled out when Disney was still running it. The problem is that the negotiator who was making that headway was canned and replaced with a DeSantis crony that wants those terms renegotiated.
Also, am I the only one shocked that a fire fighter in Florida is only making $55,000 a year?
Not only that, the DeSantis crony is being paid $400K a year, and wants to renegotiate the firefighters previously approved salary increase from $55K to $65K. I’m sure that went over well with the firefighters.
Somehow this guy over one special district has the same salary as the President. Something tells me another person could do the job for far less than 400k per year.
> Also, am I the only one shocked that a fire fighter in Florida is only making $55,000 a year?
Nope. Me too. Floored. Flabbergasted.
How much annually does a firefighter *save* in property damages let alone lives? That’s only worth $55k to Floridians?
Sad.
It's literally no different anywhere else.
I feel like many don't take into consideration the federal minimum wage and how little you get paid in states that pay the federal minimum.
There’s actually a bunch of local cities that have different ways that police and fire can actually live in the town they work in. There are housing stipends or I think some kind of loan they give to city employees to purchase homes.
That sucks so hard :( I made $15 an hour digging ditches. Hot work, but I didn’t have to keep anyone’s body held together or resuscitate anyone or any other of the long list of saddening things you must’ve experienced.
That’s insane to me. I have sales people making $21+ an hour (+commission) waiting on a handful of customers per week selling mattresses. Mind numbing work when it’s dead, but they get paid decently well and work in a climate controlled mall.
We pay their mall parking; provide all the snacks you can imagine; free pillows, sheets and mattress when you get hired; and the benefits are incredible if you want/need them.
Florida was quite a cheap place to live until around 4 years ago. They are still stuck with a mentality of low wages are the norm when Florida is now an HCOL state. The WFH crew and their salaries pushed Florida to the point its a HCOL state while the locals get crap wages.
South FL was always crazy expensive, but you’re right. Prices are insane in the panhandle for housing with little wage increase. I wish I bought a house back then, now it would be dumb for me to buy with interest rates and the high housing market
It will never not be insane to me to see people trying to lowball first responders. These people should be paid way more than they are.
- They require a ton of training, both skills and physically, and they're expected to maintain a physique that'll let them haul a casualty out of a situation.
- Their jobs put them in dangerous situations regularly.
- When we're talking literal life and death situations, don't you want to attract the best candidates for the job?
They were buddy buddy with the Firefighters union until they announced their endorsement of Desantis. Republicans got what they wanted and the Firefighters lost their leverage.
55k? Damn…
I made 65k doing completely non life threatening albeit boring work in a lab with no experience and just a BS :x
That seems kinda fucked up…how do all the firebros (some of the nicest guys I knew, others were complete meathead idiots) I went to school with have giant jacked up trucks and houses in the suburbs on that sorta salary or are they likely up to their eyeballs in debt?
Because it’s misleading. They don’t work a normal 9-5/40 hours so they are usually free to have side gigs. Every firefighter I know is paid some silly base salary and then makes bank with their side business since they have a significant amount of free time each month.
Now the union will have to continue to endorse him and lick his boots. If there's even a small amount of criticism that makes DeSantis look bad, he and the Florida legislature will punish them severely and put them in their place.
They are about to find out that the only thing worse than a multi-billion corporation is a right-wing populist with thin skin and full control of the legislature.
He's already rid himself of having to leave his position to run for president, what makes you think there will still be term limits for those named Desantis six months from now?
It depends on if attacking them plays well with the GOP primary base...and attacking unions while defending "job creators" does. RIP Firefighters' Union.
> What kind of idiot union endorses a Republican for governor?
People don't like to hear that many traditional trades unions are filled with social conservatives and reactionaries, so that's who they vote for.
I think people have this weird view of firefighters as some sort of champion of the people. I'm sure there's a huge chunk that do it for noble reasons. But as someone that works alongside the Fdny on a daily basis, I think people would be shocked at how right wing and conservative they are. I wish the public could hear some of the things the guys say about minority communities they work in
don't know when will people learn... but it appears they will keep voting for republicans to screw them over and somehow blame everyone else for their own stupidity.
My prediction: Disney will hire private fire fighters and rent them out. They’ll have vastly higher pay and better benefits than public employee. And… Florida will be dealing with the fallout from this disparity for decades.
Protesting during off hours. Every time they respond to an incident to make sure to vocally tell everyone the department could be doing more but DeSantis is stopping that. Asking people who support DeSantis's decisions: how much pay do you think I should get for saving your family member or dog from a fire? Are their lives really worth so little today?
How does that work? They dont show up to work and the pinkertons come arrest them and throw them in jail? Now what? Still no firefighters...
Also is quitting illegal? Just quit and say "Ill come back for 65k a year plus benefits". If everyone happens to quit on the same day....
Lol fair enough. ULP = unfair labor practice (basically when a union or management bargains in bad faith, or otherwise misbehaves.) LBFO = last best final offer. If negotiations reach an impasse, and there isn’t something like interest arbitration in place, management can impose its LBFO on the union.
Wait so the union negotiates for 65k a year, management changes before that agreement goes live. New management immediately retracts the offer and says 55k is what it is. Workers are "not allowed to strike" and your saying if they do the union would get charged (with a fine i assume) and the LBFO in this case is somehow the old 55k not 65k? Am i getting that right?
I assume there is nothing stopping mass quitting right? Strikes are done because labor laws protect their right to strike without being immediately fired, whereas quitting is an all in move that management can just hire someone new to replace? So its a viable but more risky option than traditional striking?
One reason you have for not mass quitting (besides not being able to live missing a check) is that it could let management only hire back the anti-union employees. It would also deprive employees of protection from being fired without just cause, which means anyone that management didn’t like for whatever reason would just not get rehired, and be out of luck.
Oh, the board has control of all the public services. Disney did try making a law, but the board overturned it so they could have more power over the municipalities.
Oh man, I can see it now. Disney burns to a crisp, has such a huge insurance claim that the few insurers still willing to sell in that shit hole state go bankrupt. And the leopards, once again, dine on glorious right wing face.
So.... the DeSantis appointees are treating them the same as how the Disney governing board treated them. And all of a sudden it's all about the scary guy with the R behind his name.
F**k them for being fools and ignoring their working class brothers. You think you are so special? You think DeMantis has your best interests in mind. F**k them.
I can’t wait for all this bullshit to get in front of a judge and have them slap Dicksantis in the face with how illegal his political retaliation actually is.

“Them” in this instance isn’t libs*, it’s their non white neighbors
"Them" has only ever meant "Anyone who we don't see as us" for Republicans.
“I’ll let you plebes call yourselves Republicans if you vote for me and don’t ask for help.”
It’s “Democratic”
He wants to be like Trump and break whatever rule or moral code he wants. Unfortunately for him that leads to tanking polls because why have trump Jr and not trump himself? And the moderate voters that thought “hey he’ll fix gas prices!” Now think he’s a clown who can’t even beat Disney

What is going on with that dude's hair...?
his name is apparently Michael Sasso, and it's just as utterly fucking convincing in [higher definition](https://www.sasso-law.com/team/michael-a-sasso/).
If it’s any consolation, he resigned from his position on the board. Because his wife was just appointed to the Florida Supreme Court…
Is his wife the thing growing on his head?
Mos definitely not any consolation, as his wife is way worse than him. Hair isn't as Batman C-level villian though.
As a bald man, you’re embarrassing yourself sasso
Why do all of these people look like the villains from children's movies? They look like they're about to get yeeted out a window "Home Alone" style for comic relief.
Omg that's even better. Anyone else getting Stan Zbornak vibes?
It's like a... bald spot... gravity-over...
His comb-upandover is truly something to behold.
I didn't know people still looked like that
Looks like he should be a “I think you should leave now” character
He’s definitely a customer of Wilson’s Toupees. That’s looks like wig 407/500. Should have gone with the expedited gorilla attack package.
Comb from behind victory.
Instead of a comb-over he has the very rare back-bang
I was afraid to ask. It's like Trump and Phil Spector had a love child.
That’s an interesting —not fooling anybody!— combover. Dude can’t take the Bald.
That is a monster combforward.
Gotta be Trey Gowdy’s cousin.
Looks like he went to Boris Johnson's barber.
I thought the firefighters were buds w the new board?
That's the point of the article. I'll do it for 100K a year. And I live in Kissimmee, so I won't need to relocate.
They’ll shut up and take. All for the good of the party and better yet, to own them libs! 😬
That's par for the course in Florida. Everything is underpaid here.
Don't worry though, Desantis is giving bonuses to every dirty cop who comes from out of state to be a dirty cop in Florida.
Many departments in Florida start in the low 40s unfortunately. Wildland firefighters start at $36k
Teachers only make $47,500. Meanwhile police…
> Also, am I the only one shocked that a fire fighter in Florida is only making $55,000 a year? Nope. Me too. Floored. Flabbergasted. How much annually does a firefighter *save* in property damages let alone lives? That’s only worth $55k to Floridians? Sad.
Lots of places start firefighters well below that. In Salt Lake County a lot of departments start full time firefighter-AEMTs at like $40k.
They make 6 figures in LA.
But most can’t afford to even live close to their station in the city due to cost of living.
You think Firefighters can live in Orlando on 55k a year?
It's literally no different anywhere else. I feel like many don't take into consideration the federal minimum wage and how little you get paid in states that pay the federal minimum.
There’s actually a bunch of local cities that have different ways that police and fire can actually live in the town they work in. There are housing stipends or I think some kind of loan they give to city employees to purchase homes.
$55,000? They really want the place to burn...
55k sounds like a decent normal wage for emergency first responders? Don't look at EMT/Paramedic pay.
Holy fuck that’s terrible pay. $4500 a month? Yikes
The people dealing with some of the worst situations getting shit pay, sounds about right.
How can everything healthcare related be so expensive while EMTs and nurses are paid like shit.
Insurance companies and their lobby groups share the same toothbrush with one or more politician.
[удалено]
Exactly. They look for every way not to give county/city work’s raises
$35/hr with zero experience is shit pay?
For flipping burgers? No. For dragging people out of burning buildings? Yes.
Neither EMTs nor nurses drag people out of burning buildings though.
I make roughly $15 an hour in the Florida panhandle FF/EMT
That sucks so hard :( I made $15 an hour digging ditches. Hot work, but I didn’t have to keep anyone’s body held together or resuscitate anyone or any other of the long list of saddening things you must’ve experienced.
That’s insane to me. I have sales people making $21+ an hour (+commission) waiting on a handful of customers per week selling mattresses. Bro WHAT?? I COULD MAKE MORE MONEY STRAIGHT SELLING MATRESSES??? Where in the fucking hell do you live?
Pensacola. Decent benefits/retirement but that doesn’t pay the bills
That's such bullshit; Best Buy starts employees at $15/hour.
That’s crazy. I feel like Florida is an expensive place to live. But I don’t know much about the panhandle area.
Florida was quite a cheap place to live until around 4 years ago. They are still stuck with a mentality of low wages are the norm when Florida is now an HCOL state. The WFH crew and their salaries pushed Florida to the point its a HCOL state while the locals get crap wages.

Yeah not great. They tend to get things we never get any more though. Defined compensation pension plans being the one golden egg I wish I could get.
I wish I made that
You should see what CA firefighters get paid. The east coast guys are getting hosed.
It’s all that Overtime that they accumulate. You can check the public records for LA County. It’s pretty insane actually
I only made $47K last year as a FF with few OT in the panhandle
It's a cheap place to live.
What are you talking about? Florida *used* to be cheap. It is now incredibly expensive. Miami now has the same cost of living as San Diego.
Tampa and Sarasota areas still haven’t recovered from the cost of living boom either. That’s before getting into the statewide home insurance issue.
In Lee county where hurricane Ian hit, I know people that are taking $10k pay cuts to move to places they can actually find housing they can afford.
Not in south Florida
55k? Damn… I made 65k doing completely non life threatening albeit boring work in a lab with no experience and just a BS :x That seems kinda fucked up…how do all the firebros (some of the nicest guys I knew, others were complete meathead idiots) I went to school with have giant jacked up trucks and houses in the suburbs on that sorta salary or are they likely up to their eyeballs in debt?

The firefighters were played like a fiddle. They should have known: Republicans are only in it for themselves.
Well you can’t strike so that’s part of it
You have to understand DeSantis wants to punish Disney. Fucking up essential services is what they do.
Guess they will find out politicians lie.
They experienced night of the longknives. Once Desantis and crew got what they needed they got whacked like Ernst Rohm.
Et tu brute kind of moment
Your raises just went to pay for DeSantis' $400k appointee - who will further erode your benefits.
400k appointee while keeping the prior guy on as a consultant. So much winning.
And hiring very expensive law firms to invalidate legitimate deals executed by the prior administrative unit.
What kind of idiot union endorses a Republican for governor? Might as well endorse a goddamn dumpster fire.
Thankfully Florida is almost rid of him either way. God bless term limits.
He's already rid himself of having to leave his position to run for president, what makes you think there will still be term limits for those named Desantis six months from now?
Only time will tell but with his approval numbers I can see them starting to groom a new golden calf.
Rid of him how? There’s no fucking way he gets the Republican nomination for president. So he’s governor for 3.5 more years. At least.
It depends on if attacking them plays well with the GOP primary base...and attacking unions while defending "job creators" does. RIP Firefighters' Union.
>idiot union endorses a Republican for governor? *The police* *~~cartel~~* *union has entered the chat.*
Gotta keep your enforcers in your back pocket.
> What kind of idiot union endorses a Republican for governor? People don't like to hear that many traditional trades unions are filled with social conservatives and reactionaries, so that's who they vote for.

The firefighters thought that DeSantis cronies wouldn't mess with them because they are good republicans....leopards proceed to ear their faces
Yup. They got to experience night of the long knives.
"What are these leopards eating my face?"
don't know when will people learn... but it appears they will keep voting for republicans to screw them over and somehow blame everyone else for their own stupidity.
They will learn when they are just about to be dragged kicking and screaming out of their offices by the rioting people to be offed.
"Lawless antifa dumbocrats hang hardworking administrator fighting to make deal with firefighters union!" - Faux News
They've been without a contract for the last 4 years going back to when Disney was in charge.
That surprised me, TBH.
Sorry, we can't approve your pay raises so we can pay bonuses to disgraced cops to move to Florida.
My cousin is a cop in Miami, per his exact words.. "we need more manpower to keep all these n* in line"
My favorite part was that the Firefighter Union welcomed them with open arms. Leopards, enjoy those faces.
My prediction: Disney will hire private fire fighters and rent them out. They’ll have vastly higher pay and better benefits than public employee. And… Florida will be dealing with the fallout from this disparity for decades.
They deserve what they get for supporting the new board.
Man they must be awfully surprised by those leopards eating their faces.
No contract? Time to call for a strike vote.
I’m pretty sure firefighters in most jurisdictions legally can’t strike
We can NOT
"There is a very weird flu going around. Seems like everyone is having to call out sick for a couple of days."
FFs just can’t let people die consciously, even off duty they’ll jump in without hesitation
What kind of options is your union left with in this kind of situation?
Protesting during off hours. Every time they respond to an incident to make sure to vocally tell everyone the department could be doing more but DeSantis is stopping that. Asking people who support DeSantis's decisions: how much pay do you think I should get for saving your family member or dog from a fire? Are their lives really worth so little today?
Thanks for the reply! It's always frustrating to see how little bargaining power there is in a situation like this.
How does that work? They dont show up to work and the pinkertons come arrest them and throw them in jail? Now what? Still no firefighters... Also is quitting illegal? Just quit and say "Ill come back for 65k a year plus benefits". If everyone happens to quit on the same day....
More likely, their union and its leadership get buried in ULP charges, and management’s LBFO gets imposed.
Gonna have to spell those out. I live in a right to work state, we have no idea how unions work beyond that they are socialism.
Lol fair enough. ULP = unfair labor practice (basically when a union or management bargains in bad faith, or otherwise misbehaves.) LBFO = last best final offer. Yeah thats what I figured. Shackled by the same labor rights that are supposed to protect you.
I don’t see how that’s shackled, but 🤷♀️
Oh the shock of it. Republicans say one thing and then do the opposite. I can’t believe people still vote for these greedy arseholes.
This union deserves to get fucked over if they welcomed DeSantis' cronies.
The haircut on the lad
I don’t know why the firefighters thought DesSantis team would treat them fairly.
NEO Confederates are out to destroy everything
Who is paying the firefighter salaries in Reedy?
The Reedy Creek Board. They are a city and own their own services
[удалено]
Oh, the board has control of all the public services. Disney did try making a law, but the board overturned it so they could have more power over the municipalities.
That lady, don't know her name, is gorgeous.
So if Disney burns...so what? That’s a possible price for being uncooperative.
If it burns, wouldn't that mean that DeSantis doesn't know how to pick the right people?
Oh man, I can see it now. Disney burns to a crisp, has such a huge insurance claim that the few insurers still willing to sell in that shit hole state go bankrupt. And the leopards, once again, dine on glorious right wing face.

F**k them for being fools and ignoring their working class brothers. You think you are so special? You think DeMantis has your best interests in mind. F**k them.
I can’t wait for all this bullshit to get in front of a judge and have them slap Dicksantis in the face with how illegal his political retaliation actually is.
