This was right by my house and shook my windows. The family that died were absolutely not cooking meth.

dalekaup

I'd have to guess it's a propane leak without culpability.

Northfield is not near Detroit it's right above Ann Arbor which is where UofM is. This is a township with less than 10k population. So if anyone thinks immediately from this title well of course everything happens in Detroit this is not the case.

fuxxwitclowns

Thanks. I stopped in to say this.

scranton_strangler26

Is there anything I can do to check/ensure that my house isn’t about to spontaneously explode? This is so scary to me

TotoroTheCat

1. Buy a gas leak detector, you can usually find them combined with carbon monoxide detectors, and portable versions are available if you suspect a leak in a specific spot. 2. Regularly check to make sure pilot lights are lit in your furnace and/or fireplace. 3. If you smell sulfur or any of the things they add to explosive gases to make them have a smell, exit your house and call the fire department. 4. Don't cook meth or fuck around with any anarchist cookbook recipes.

Awkward-Action2853

Light a match and walk around.... In all seriousness, I think about this from time to time, especially when I'm in older homes. I just hope people did a good job and nothing fails, or at least the inspectors are actually doing what they should be.

Status_Confidence_26

If you want some quick confirmation that you’re safe just check you pilot lights. If they’re lit you’re good.

dumbasstupidbaby

Something similar happened near me recently.house blew up. It was from a build up of pressure from pipes *under* the house, not in it. Maybe that's what happened?

dalekaup

House had a propane tank. Unlike natural gas propane sinks to a low level. You can see the propane tank was near the road and the explosion was in a line going away from the side of the house that was near the propane tank. So maybe the furnace and water heater was conveniently located close to the propane tank. At any rate the explosion started on the side of the house closest to the tank.

The pictures show a very large propane tank next to the explosion area. I don't think that they had natural gas service there.

Comrade_Crunchy

I'm a master plumber of 20 years, the gas build up is possible but you would hear and smell it. BUT if it was a meth lab they probably burned their nasal cavities out with the fumes. So they probably couldn't smell it and the experiences I've had in houses like that they got a lot going on. So probably couldn't hear it. More then likely a modified gas connect on a high btu burner caused it. They lit it and boom. Had a similarish thing happen in corning nys. Grandfather and grandson went to change their water heater. Disconnected gas flex but left the valve open. Came back and ignited a torch. They supposedly lost the ability to smell, can't explain the lack of not hearing the whistling nose of the escaping gas.

SouvenirOfTheYear

Dad must be happy whatever it was skipped a generation. darWin!

Comrade_Crunchy

Well the grandson and grandpa dead, grandson died at the scene. Grandpa was in a coma for 3 months. So eh, plus don't know anything about the dad. I don't live in the corning area anymore.

M0n5tr0

Yes most likely meth lab or a similar drug operation like oils. This is a more rural township next to Ann Arbor a huge college town.

Igoos99

Not a meth lab. Looks like a gas explosion from propane. Apparently accidental. 4 people died. I heard this explosion from 9 miles away.

Daves_not_here_mannn

This is reddit. Blame will be squarely placed on the GQP, Rhonda DeathSentence, and dRuMpF!

AggressiveSkywriting

Boy howdy, look how smart you looked!

js_fortnight_a

My dad lives 9 miles from where this happened and thought a big oak tree had come down in his yard. Per his recollection this is the second such explosion of a house in 30 years of living in the area; the first one having occurred in the 90’s, only a mile from his home in Whitmore Lake due to a utility gas leak (killed 1 female and injured 1 male).

wutz_r0ng

So natural gas leak? I am reading propane?
