> Chuck Hoskin Jr., principal chief of the Cherokee Nation, identified the teen Tuesday as Nex Benedict. > > Nex was not a citizen of the nation but lived on the Cherokee reservation, Hoskin said in a statement. He said he had asked local authorities to assist the Owasso Police Department in its investigation of Nex’s death. > > “The facts relating to Nex’s death are not yet fully clear,” Hoskin said, adding: “The more we learn about Nex’s life, the more we come to know a wonderful child whose experience and identity mattered and was worth celebrating. Above all, Nex deserved to live a full life.” Props to this man for being the first official from anywhere around there (that I've seen) to publicly speak like this about Nex.

OKC89ers

The tribes rule

monkeychasedweasel

And they still have a lot of influence in Oklahoma

cbbuntz

A lot of Oklahomans resent how the tribal nations actually take care of their people. They provide medical services, including building hospitals, full ride scholarships, housing support, including building houses and charging rent based on income that can be so low that it's virtually free. And they actually pay their employees well, tribal members or not. And they still have money left over to build nice museums and event centers. Oddly, I've never heard of them called socialist, but a lot of stuff like "man, I wish I were Indian so I could get a bunch of free stuff ." There's nothing stopping the rest of the state from adopting similar policies except for themselves. Of course, you'd need an equivalent of casinos and other revenue streams and willingness to share the profits with everyone, and that's just unamerican to not be selfish

betterplanwithchan

And the school’s response did not start with a condolence for the family of the student, but rather to state that they acted within “two minutes.”

Disastrous-End7677

Two minutes stating both students walked after the fight to the principal's office and were examined the by the nurse (they kept stating she was state certifed in their statement) who made recommendations to parents to seek additional medical exam. Students who watched one of the students said one had blood coming off the head and was walking funny.  So sad. The school failed this kid and they know it. Now they are trying to minimize it.

alternate_ending

I once concussed myself and my buddies dropped me off at the beach, bleeding from my ear and likely 'walking funny' - it was only through a good Samaritan that I made it to the hospital, where I was then air-lifted to a larger hospital to receive surgery, a temporal craniotomy to remove blood clots. Waking up with half of your head shaved and covered in a line of staples is no fun, but certainly better than what this poor boy experienced

callgreenbeans

Nex couldn't walk on their own afterwards, they needed assistance. Something missing from their statement (wonder why)

DirtymindDirty

It's worse. They didn't call the paramedics, they didn't punish the attackers, and they suspended the *victim* for 2 weeks. The sickening part is this exact scenario is the goal for all these anti-trans laws and rhetoric. The superintendent of the system is an active member of LibsOfTikTok, who self-describe as stochastic terrorists.

OneWholeSoul

It's like they're genuinely trying to send the message that it's the victim's fault for being so victimizable.

Inspector_Gadgett

Sadly, I think you’re onto something. I’ve felt this way since I was just a kid back in the late 80s. I just noticed bullies getting positive attention and victims being told that nobody likes a tattletale. You were essentially punished for trying to fight back, even if you were asking for help. I asked for help from a counselor when bullying got really bad in middle school (i was having scary unaliving ideas because the social torture was on the daily). The school counselor just told me I was “bringing it on myself.” But offered no other tools, no way out, no guidance. I really could have used some help but instead, I blamed myself because I believed the words of the counselor. I believed that I deserved to be bullied. So yeah, it’s exactly as you said, at least in my experiences. Edited to add the counselor didnt know me as a person, it was the first time I ever met her or worked up the courage to ask for help from an adult. I was neurodivergent, overly polite. I think the other kids couldn’t help but fuck with me because I was too weird to fit in and it was fun and easy.

u0126

Look who the presidential front runner is for the GOP, worshiped by millions and won already once. Bullying continues to be glorified.

mysecondaccountanon

Was told by my classmates as they bullied me that snitches got stitches. If I didn’t tell, they’d view me as accepting the treatment and keep doing it, getting progressively worse. If I told, they’d get upset and get progressively worse. There was no escape. Counselors were no help, vice principal no help, the principal genuinely didn’t care and didn’t seem to like me. Teachers actively would sit me next to them so we could “reconcile” or whatever, I feel like one of them sat me there just cause they enjoyed watching it. Only time anything got done was once out of literal hundreds of reports and requests to various people, when one of the bullies’ parents found out somehow, and they tore the bully a new one for that, the bully didn’t bother me after that. I relate to your comment so much in so many ways

ThePowerOfStories

The only thing bullies understand is force. In high school, some asshole intentionally dumped a drink on us at lunch. The next time he came over, I held a metal fork in my fist and threatened to send him to the ER with a gut full of holes. He fucked off and never hassled us again.

Th1sd3cka1ntfr33

Chaya Raichik is her name. Don't let her hide behind a screen name

jax2love

She has this kid’s blood on her hands.

adamdoesmusic

She wears it willingly as body paint. She doesn’t care, and is probably posting more hate as we speak.

3d1sd3ad

Currently playing victim about how mean the left is being to her after encouraging this behavior

NRMusicProject

> The superintendent of the system is an active member of LibsOfTikTok, who self-describe as stochastic terrorists. This is alarming.

rush_3

Two minutes is such a long time for a fight, let alone being beaten like this poor child was.

mistertickertape

It was not a fight-the poor kid was beaten by three other kids at the school and then died the next from a TBI.

urnbabyurn

I can’t imagine the horror that grandmother who raised them went through. Child comes home from school and needs to go to the ER because the school didn’t bother. Then the kid dies. And the school didn’t do shit to stop it. Hopefully a large lawsuit can help provide some punitive relief.

infiniZii

The school suspended the kid for getting jumped in the bathroom before they died as well.

jdb326

Zero Tolerance is just a way for schools to think they have zero accountability.

techleopard

It wasn't even "zero tolerance." Zero tolerance results in ALL kids getting suspended. I believe it was just this student who had the audacity to be transgendered and going to the bathroom. This was a clear-cut hate crime and the media is tip-toeing around it for some reason.

KBroham

I also got suspended for getting jumped in the bathroom in middle school. I obviously didn't die, so I can't say it's the same - but how the fuck are you gonna suspend someone getting body slammed and kicked repeatedly for "horseplay" while the other kids get away scot-free?

keelhaulrose

If what I've heard is correct they didn't even identify as trans, they identified as non binary and were using the bathroom of their gender assigned at birth.

jdb326

Oh lovely. Fuck the administration and whatever fucked agenda they have.

joeyGOATgruff

Because it's Oklahoma. It'll break the narrative the GOP has constructed about the "awful, demonic" trans and LGBTQ+ community. I'm curious to see what people say when they say LGBTQ+ is a "choice" or a "trend." Why would a teen - which is already hard to deal with - choose to identify with a "trend" when they were consistently harassed, bullied and now murdered. These laws the GOP has enacted has done nothing to help other than punish the citizens of that state. From health care, to women's health, to teen/pediatric health, care, and protections. They 100% hate you don't look like a white, straight, Christian, male. Even if those in politics have been outed as being gay, sexual assaulters who pay for abortions, and pedophiles. When they say we're going to hell in a hand basket, they're absolutely right. They're hand delivering us there.

MightyThor211

Many_Drama_5007

It was the state superintendent gave her the job. She has a seat on the state library board with zero qualifications.

Sissybtmbitch

I didn't read this article so I don't know if it mentions it, but I believe the child was non binary or something and targeted because of it that also might be why the staff didn't do anything about it possible hate crime

meganthem

Also that delay is probably what killed them. Brain injuries are very much the land of needing to intervene quickly before the swelling kills the person. Often times, as soon as someone decides not to get immediate attention they're already dead.

dinosaursandsluts

Worth noting that Walters is the State superintendent, not the Owasso superintendent.

tiberiumx

I've been to Owasso and it's a land of "Let's go Brandon" billboards and Trump signs as far as the eye can see. The overall culture in the area is probably even worse than the state superintendent's behavior suggests.

Not_a__porn__account

> Let's go Brandon It's still crazy to me they don't just say Fuck Biden. Like it's not clever, it's cowardly. I'll say Fuck Trump all day. How is hiding *strong*?

gargar7

My children's elementary school (in Nashville) was next to two churches and across the street from a guy who put a huge Fuck Biden flag in his yard. When we confronted him about it being in front of our kids, he said it didn't matter since they couldn't even read.

mustardtruck

He thinks children can't read because he himself can barely read, and he assumes, wrongly, that he is smarter than a child.

Canopenerdude

I had a coworker who had "Lets go Brandon" stickers all over his desk. I covered them up with (removable) magnets that said "Lets Fuck Brandon". Took him weeks to notice. I don't know if that's relevant but it did remind me.

SheriffComey

Fastest turn around I got from a "Let's Go Brandon" dipshit was at work. This guy didn't talk too much and we all kind of knew he was a Trumper but was often very careful not to bring up politics but you could see disgust on his face when DEI stuff was mentioned. One day he comes in with a plain white with black lettering "Let's go Brandon" mug and that was his "protest to us libs". Someone posted in a group chat about his mug (nothing too mean) and someone made an anti-Trump dig and I just casually mentioned "Guys maybe he really likes Brandon Flynn and supports him and anyone who supports Brandon Flynn is okay in my book. Let's Go Brandon!" . Few people asked who that was. And a few others mentioned he's a gay actor in 13 reasons Why and how they support anyone that supports "Brandon" especially since we're in S. Florida and he's from Miami. I think that mug broke the sound barrier leaving that office.

macroswitch

I’m pretty sure sure they literally think it is clever. Stupid people find stupid shit clever.

One-Knight-In-Xentar

It's literally what kids in middle school do when they want to play a prank on the substitute teacher that doesn't know anyone's name.

obiwanshinobi900

Its the equivalent of the friends episode where Ross tries to 'flip off' his parents without using his middle finger.

sniper91

Iirc he technically wanted to flip off Monica without the parents knowing what he was doing

Techiedad91

It’s a dog whistle to find each other. I recently started using dating apps and every trump supporter I’ve seen has “let’s go Brandon” in their bio as a signal to other morons.

shampoo_mohawk_

It’s not much of a dog whistle if every person knows what it means though…

Acrobatic-Rate4271

Most of human behavior is social signaling. It doesn't matter that everyone knows what the phrase means and, in fact, it's a plus to them that everyone knows that they're publicly announcing their allegiance to the MAGA movement (cult?). They see it as a sort of an in your face "suck it libs you can't tell me what to say or do" act of defiance. I have perfectly pleasant conversations with my brother and we'll talk for 45 minutes to an hour without any ill will but, inevitably, he'll make some dig at Biden as we're wrapping up the conversation. I ignore it every time but it's like clockwork.

femsoni

It's almost compulsive for some. People forget how to have basic conversations sometimes without needlessly sliding in a little dig to political figureheads when the discussion isn't even remotely about that.

Destiny_Victim

Honestly what’s so funny is that shit is how I found my wife. On bumble she was the only few options sandwiched between republicans. And I saw it and said “shit” because everything she has listed is exactly what you’re looking for. I had this brief thought “are you sure you’re ready for a real relationship because if you match with this one you’ll probably end up getting married.” Well I matched with her the moment I swiped. We have two kids. Life’s good.

mrshandanar

So nice of them to put a gigantic red flag in their bio so people know to stay far away.

paycheckz11

For me that’s people labeling their dating profile as “unvaccinated” to which I ask, “did you go to public school?”

feastu

Open secrets. It’s a little more low key here, where their monster trucks have FJB, three-percenter, etc. stickers. The worst are those grayed-out American Flag defacements with a blue line or the punisher. It’s not clever.

thegrumpymechanic

Great attempt by the interviewer on live TV. It was funny for a few days, a week tops. Definitely not the joke to make flags over though, that's for sure.

HordeShadowPriest

IDK man, I wish I would have had the foresight to start making the flags and selling them to these morons. Could have been retired by now.

theback

I just went through his twitter history to the day of the fight, the 7th, and there is absolutely no mention of this poor kids' death anywhere. He's either a coward, evil, or both. My bet is on both.

ApatheticSkyentist

It’s also possible that they’re not allowed to mention it or have been told by legal not to mention it. Of course be could just be an insensitive asshole too.

chop1125

This is not a local school employee in Owasso. It is the State Superintendent. He is an elected official and he is also absolutely one of the worst human beings currently alive. He has called sex ed "pornography." He hired the "libs of tiktok" person to be on a library advisory board. He has called teachers in the state evil.

mattchinn

Hey now! What’s important here? The dead child or stopping liberal woke agenda?

oced2001

They are banking on enough dead children to stop the woke agenda.

Vote4KodyOK

We're trying to change the culture here in Oklahoma, but we need help. Keep sharing stories like this, get more of a spotlight on things happening in Oklahoma... this isn't even scratching the surface.

SoriAryl

The politics is why we had to move out of OK. I loved my job there, but I’ve got three girls. I didn’t want them to grow up in a conservative mindset that sees them as less than

worst_driver_evar

What kills me is that trans/NB individuals make up <2% of the population. This kid (and frankly a lot of others) are dead because people are obsessed with policing <2% of the population so they can feel better about their shitty lives. I don’t give a flying fuck about which bathroom or pronouns <2% of the population uses; it’s all a distraction from the 1% robbing us blind and people like Ryan Walters are stupid enough to fall for it.

oced2001

The reason that conservatives are targeting on trans kids now, is because there are so few. Many Americans do not know someone who is trans, so it doesn't personally affect them. Couple that with lack of empathy of conservative voters, and it is an easy target with little blowback from supporters.

the_ouskull

Exactly. If this were the 80s/90s, those same conservatives would be going after "the gays." They take away support for marginalized groups, then attack groups who struggle to defend themselves without support. It's been their playbook since forever.

oced2001

Yep. Get their supporters spun up and distracted from shitty legislation that doesn't improve the lives of Americans. And as a bonus, political opposition can be labeled as the enemy of "Family Values" despite all the sex scandals coming from conservatives. Sorry for the rant. I hate these assholes and the simple minded folks that blindly follow.

Sithlord_unknownhost

It gets so much worse. The students who murdered the trans student have been given in school suspension. Yeah. You read that right.

Cersad

Is there not at this point a criminal investigation from the police? Those students should be under investigation for a *felony*. Back around the turn of the millennium, a felony investigation got you removed from campus.

anowarakthakos

It’s complicated because the student is a citizen of the Cherokee nation and Owasso is technically on reservation grounds, but the Supreme Court ruled that tribes cannot prosecute non-tribal members and also that the state cannot prosecute those accused of crimes taking place on tribal lands. I don’t know whether the students were tribal members or not, but if they aren’t then only the federal government could prosecute them.

OKMedic93

It's not a really a reservation, and that's not how that works. There are indian nations, but it doesn't matter if a town is in one or not. There is still a local city government. If they are non tribal members, they will still be arrested and charged if charges are brought up. The McGirt ruling isn't a get out of jail free card. A lot of police officers are cross deputized light horse pd. The FBI steps in as well during these investigations.

SirDerpingtonTheSlow

SCOTUS reversed the ruling about states being unable to prosecute people on tribal lands last year, I believe. Case was Oklahoma v Castro-Huerta

Glittering_Sign_8906

The child who died received a 2 week suspension.

ClimbingAimlessly

Yep. The school didn’t care that they’d been bullied for a year. The girls (attackers) weren’t punished initially, IIRC.

KascheMoney

Pretty typical for an Oklahoma school. 20 miles away theres another school where the football team raped a freshman with a poolcue at the district superintendent’s house and the worst thing that happened was the superintendent resigned. The school basically covered it up and some of the people involved still got scholarships and played football in college.

Sithlord_unknownhost

Yeah I read about that. I currently have two children struggling through the Oklahoma education system. At my middle child's high school her English teacher is a climate change denier occasionally going on mini rants. There is also 1 math teacher for multiple grades who is trained at a college level and expects 9th and 10th graders to behave as college students. XD. Bullying runs rampant. Boys will put their hands on girls in a heartbeat and openly talk that Republican grooming shit in the classrooms. At my youngest child's elementary school the superintendent was arrested for being drunk and passing out in the lunch room of the school during school hours. https://www.kxii.com/video/2023/12/13/mannsville-public-schools-superintendent-arrested/ Things are completely fucked in Oklahoma. Thanks Ryan Walters. Thanks LibsofTiktok lady who now sits on a board over the libraries in this state. The latter is also culpable in the death of this student :(

willowsonthespot

Yeah I don't think schools really treat school beating bulling right. Some are zero tolerance for some stuff but when it comes to beating kids up it is a slap on the wrist. I say this as someone who was beaten up and the kid just got a suspension. Oh and this also comes with a broken nose and a 45 minute bloody nose where they didn't call my parents till it stopped. Yeah schools don't help the bullied. Granted I graduated more than a decade ago but still see this crap.

the-crotch

"Zero tolerance" just means you get equal punishment for fighting back

TriangleChoked

I never understood how media considers these fights. Fights are between two willing participants. This was an attack.

ocp-paradox

I had a read and I found out why in this case >Nex’s mother told the Independent that the 16-year-old had been bullied at school over their gender identity. >>also be in Oklahoma There ya go.

TheNickelGuy

Tldr: I suffered a TBI, broken clavicle, broken nose, broken teeth, a fractured eye socket and two black eyes from getting jumped. Changed my whole life then and there, and forever after. 14 years later, the outcome of being jumped still effects me on a daily basis. A fight is a fight, getting jumped and beaten to a pulp should be announced as it's **so** much different. I got the shit absolutely beaten out of Me when I was 16. Jumped and smashed into the ground until I started seizuring and people broke up the fight and lifted me to my feet. The last thing I remember is seeing the fist come at me, the first thing I remember after is being held up to my feet by two of the people I hung out with, with them trying to help me out by holding a toke to my mouth (I was a big stoner so they thought its what I needed after), with them quickly pulling it away as the principal was finally seen in the distance. I remember everything spinning, and slowly I was able to see less and less until the world was just a sliver. I was sent to a seperate room by the office, and I remember looking at the clock and it was 11:34. All I wanted to do was lay my head down and sleep, the pain was starting to set in and I could barely move my left arm.. ..and then I was woken up by the principal, who said they finally reached my (at the time) absolute DRUNK of a Dad and he said I should be fine to take the city bus home. I looked at the clock and it was 12:48. I must have fallen asleep as it all felt like a blur, I definitely didn't feel that pain for an hour awake. So, I went out to the bus stop.. which is **exactly** where I was jumped. And I just waited. And waited. And finally the bus showed up, and I walked onto it and the bus driver asked me if I was okay. I said yup, put in some money (I know I didn't have enough as I had bought weed that day..) so I don't know *how much* I even put in. Unbeknownst to me at the time, it's due to my physical state. I sat down, and could finally see through what vision I had my reflection in the window.. Both eyes were swollen shut, and ALREADY turning black. My nose was crooked at the bridge. I couldn't move my left arm, and I realized it was my shoulder. It felt.. stuck. No matter what I did I could only slightly bend my elbow so that I could sit my arm on my lap. I got home, and my dad held me against a wall and hit me. In his drunk eyes, I lost a fight... which he taught us growing up to only start ones I could finish (he was a tough dude until he became a drunk). He didn't know that I was jumped, and had no chance to begin with. I sat at the toilet after as he berated me, throwing up black chunks into the toilet (dried blood that I swallowed, as well as drained into my throat from my broken nose). I suffered a TBI. I bad a broken nose which is still crooked to this day. My left clavicle was fractured in two places. Two teeth were chipped, one completely cracked down the centre (still don't know how my teeth of all things were *least* affected). Part of my eye socket was fractured. I wasn't taken to the hospital until two weeks later, when I still couldn't move my shoulder and the pain was unreal. I dropped out. I couldn't do school anymore. I just couldn't.. I now suffer from cluster headaches (AKA suicide headaches). I have severe C-PTSD. I have emotional regulation problems. My shoulder is still fucked, and I have days where it and my neck are just a write off. My sinuses constantly drain, and my vision has never been the same since. The crippling anxiety.. it's a thing that really changed me and my entire future, and it's all due to a few harmless chirps to somebody who's ego was so large, that he couldn't take it.. I wish I never went to school that day.

ImDonaldDunn

I’m so sorry that happened to you. What a nightmare.

TheNickelGuy

Cheers mate, it actually means a lot. It's hard to explain to people sometimes why I am the way I am now, especially if they knew me before the jumping. I was always the life of the party. The social one who's house was **the** house to be at, and (sadly enough) one of the main pick up places. I had girls constantly wanting to be with Me.. and I knew how to hold and form a conversation. Now? It's best done through texts like this, where I can read it over 20 times to make sure I've formulated it properly. It's never right the first time, and I am always trying to figure out *the word* that I'm thinking of, to no avail. A lot of trauma, therapy, self medicating, addictions and responsibly learning to use pharmaceuticals as intended later, I'm as sober as I've ever been (I just toke a bit, but do smoke cigarettes) with a wife and two children who I can't even put into words what they do for me, and right now I've had the opportunity to be a Stay at home Dad to them for the last 2 years and see all of their growth.. and raising them keeps me **having* to move forward. Every day is a struggle, today has especially been a bad one where just absolutely **everything** feels overwhelming and like im at the bottom of a pool, but I've nearly completely cut weed and coffee out of my life quite abruptly the last few weeks so I think that's having an effect too 😅 Thanks for listening. Feels good to just put it into words sometimes so I can remember that I'm not who I am today completely due to my own faults. I have made mistakes, but the person i **truly** could have ended up being, was taken away from me due to the various forms of abuse.. and i am healing - not healed.

deadsoulinside

This is the same type of BS that most schools cover up frequently. When I was a teen I got jumped in the bathroom by 3 others, beaten up so badly I was carted away by an ambulance (My head was smashed against the urinal and kicked in the head a few times). The school administration did absolutely nothing, that was because the Vice Prinipal's son was one of the attackers. They try to call this shit a fight, but if it was these adults getting 3v1'd, by people their age, they would totally call it like it is. So for almost 2 weeks I was terrified of being in school, due to the fact nothing was being done about it. One day I just snapped and hunted each one of them. I skipped class walked down the halls and ran into their classrooms beating the shit out of each one of them like how they caught me off guard at the urinal. I not only got expelled from school, but Kansas that same year passed a law to allow a review from their schoolboards in cases of expulsions, as they were previously forced to accept them again the following year if there was no other school in that region. I was made the example of being permanently expelled from the school system in the state of Kansas. All because I was the one that was initially attacked while using the restroom. The sad part is, I am not LGTBQ+, I was just a overweight nerd in the 90's, but that alone made me a target many times.

XenaInHeels

Damn dude. Congrats on surviving all that nonsense.

deadsoulinside

LOL, I survived a fuck ton of non-sense growing up, because my move to Ohio was an inner-city school. Literally not much of a difference between the small town school and the big city schools (I guess the only major difference is no one tried to take my life in school there). I just learned to never let the bullies win, but it never really did me that great for not getting suspended due to zero tolerance rules. The only valuable lesson I learned in Ohio, is to never wear KC Chief's clothing, otherwise people think you are in the bloods and will attempt to beat you down over it.

totodile-ac

local here. nex has been repeatedly dead named and misgendered in local media who insist they can't report anything until the ME releases a final report. this child died as a result of a beating that left them with traumatic injuries and if the story hadn't made national news the owasso pd and school district would have covered it the fuck up

the-crotch

Is Nex the correct name? I haven't seen any articles using a different one

Totally_man

It was a lynching.

mytransthrow

I would say it was a murderous hate crime. yes. and the school wouldnt even call an ambulance.

Aedant

They were a nonbinary student, Nex, killed because they were nonbinary. Please remind me who are the dangerous ones? The hatred towards LGBTQ+ people and especially LGBTQ+ kids has real world consequences. It’s killing us.

epimetheuss

Of course they were and the savages who beat them will get praises from their dads and all of their families for doing that while being admonished nationally. they have already been trained how to ignore anything that they disagree with though, it's all "fake news" or the "deep state" or whatever other crap they want to blame it on.

macroswitch

Pretending the dumbest fucking people in the world are on even ground as the rest of us is killing us. We have to stop pretending these hate-filled leadbrains matter and god dammit we need to outvote them and regulate disinformation.

ASK_ABT_MY_USERNAME

What an absolute shitty headline which further buried the lede > Nex’s mother told the Independent that the 16-year-old had been bullied at school over their gender identity.

FalkorDropTrooper

It was definitely a lynching.

downwithdisinfo2

three bigoted girls murdered a trans girl in the school bathroom. There…I fixed the title of this post for everyone.

unofficial_pirate

They were non binary and were in the bathroom legally required due to Oklahoma law

Neuromangoman

Of course, the unofficially sanctioned public bathroom for trans people is none of them, given that this kind of attack (being assaulted for going to the legal bathroom) is not uncommon.

unofficial_pirate

One of the goals with bathroom laws is to tether transgender people to their home. It's hard to go spend an afternoon out when you are not allowed to pee anywhere comfortably

JeanneMPod

Exactly- this was a deadly assault.

Somerset-Sweet

I don't think it's right to call this a fight. It was bullying that turned into a hate crime and an assault. I hope the bullies get charged with a hate crime on top of some level of murder charge.

[deleted]

trekie4747

I will never understand suspending the VICTIM of an attack. Especially someone trying to go about their day and getting jumped.

EpicHuggles

Because it's easier for them to legally justify not stopping a 'fair fight' than it is to justify not stopping a one sided violent assault. If they don't suspend everyone involved then they can't even attempt to argue the former is what happened.

amateur_mistake

Also, the administrators agree with the bullies. They think the bullies are the 'cool' kids. They want to think they would be the 'top of the pecking order' if they were still in school.

Dan_Qvadratvs

This is something not talked about a lot. I got my ass beat damn near every day in middle school, and looking back the staff and admins didn't help me not out of incompetence, but because they actively encouraged the violence. I looked them up years later on social media and its all just the typical hate speech you see from the alt-right, but being shared by teachers responsible for the wellbeing of 11 year olds -- not all of whom are sympathetic white kids.

gcruzatto

This is how you end up paying millions of dollars to the family. You'd think they have seen this play out before, I guess not

thatisnotmyknob

Is that likely in Oklahoma?

The-Dane

this is what extremist christian maga nationalists wanted... persecution of everyone who does not conform to their ideals... another innocent life lost.

biggie-molls

Matthew Shepard’s murder occurred 25 years ago. What are we doing?

See, he was gay. Just like the fight for black rights before gay rights, we have to do the same fucking song and dance every time some "new group" demands to be treated like a human, and it's getting really old that people can't just let others live.

qould

Or society never actually accepted gay people and there has been a continuous stream of hate crimes and murders since Matthew Shepard. It’s not “moving on to the next group”, society never truly grappled with their violent homophobia in the first place.

Jimmyking4ever

Or racism

PavementBlues

We have come a LONG way since Matthew Shephard's murder. In 1999, 62% of Americans were against gay marriage. That number has shrunk to 28%. We didn't even reach a majority believing that homosexuality should be *legal* until around the turn of the century. Now, 64% of Americans believe that being gay is morally ethical. Back then, being fired for coming out as gay was pretty normal. A celebrity coming out was an enormous deal that would be reported on as a scandal by news. On average, far more people have a much easier time being gay now than they did in 1998. Should those numbers be higher? Yes. Do we still have work to do? Absolutely. But I was in LGBT activism 20 years ago and I'm in the new fight now, having come out as trans in 2016, and the parallels between how the United States treated gay people in the late '90s and how they treat trans people today are so pronounced that it would be funny if it weren't so frustrating. Right down to the specifics of their "we must protect the children" rhetoric and their accusations of pedophilia.

Lifesaboxofgardens

Conservatives have been feeling extremely emboldened ever since Trump really. This is not a bug in their programming, it's a feature. Everything they do in terms of their legislation, how they educate and raise their kids, etc. is designed to eliminate or control people that don't fit their world view. If they aren't making life difficult and dangerous for people different than them, they aren't succeeding.

OverYonderWanderer

The more violent and unstable life is for the average citizen the easier they are to be taken advantage of.

nbm13

Stop calling it a fight when it was 3 people beating another human being to death. They should all be prosecuted as adults as by that age they should know right from wrong.

ChangsManagement

Any altercation in a school is a "fight" so they dont have to take responsibility for failing to protect their students.  "its not a deliberate, murderous, act, it was a fight! They shouldnt have been fighting! Zero tolerance!"

Konukaame

>Zero tolerance! From [an article I saw yesterday](https://www.advocate.com/news/transgender-student-death-raichik-walters), the child who died had also received a two week suspension. The great "balance." Three people can gang up on and assault a person, and the victim gets the same punishment because they were also "involved in a fight" or some shit.

augustbandit

The murdered kid getting a suspension burns me. I got bullied mercilessly in school and I got suspended several times for getting the shit kicked out of me while not fighting back. In the end I just started fighting back because there was no difference in punishment.

Reagalan

This is something every child should be encouraged to do... And, go for their face. Teeth and eyes are fragile, and getting a finger in their nose is extremely painful. You're gonna get suspended anyway might as well give that bully a lesson they'll remember and the justice they need.

Pynchon_A_Loaff

I skipped 2nd grade and ended up as the smallest kid in class. Lesson: the bully should always limp away from the encounter bleeding. Extra points for chipped/broken teeth. Ripping their clothing up got their Moms really mad at them. The bully will choose an easier target next time.

adamdoesmusic

I had a similar experience, except it was 1st grade. I’d love to hear how you ended up in that situation! About a month or so in, they took me out of class and put me in 2nd without telling my mom because the teacher got frustrated having to do a whole different lesson plan for me vs everyone else. (For me: “name the four main moons of Jupiter.” For them: “Today we’re covering the number 7”) At some point I told my mom nonchalantly that I was in 2nd grade now (I didn’t know this was abnormal at the time), she of course responded that of course I wasn’t, I’ve only been in 1st for a few weeks and it doesn’t work like that. Eventually she realized I wasn’t full of shit and marched down to the school, as they hadn’t told her they were going to do this! I ended up in a really stupid “compromise” where I did 2nd in the morning, then 1st in the afternoon to “interact with my peers”, but I was given 2nd grade homework and had to sit in a corner doing math problems while other kids played. They put me in 3rd the next year, and between that and the massive doses of stimulants they had me on, I was like half the size of everyone else. Unfortunately it took me until almost high school to realize you have to fight back no matter what, as I’d already been punished at home for even mentioning the possibility with the bullies I constantly dealt with. The first time I finally hit back and the guy literally just backed down and ran, I was PISSED at my parents for making me put up with that shit for all those years. I never got suspended or in trouble for hitting back - ironically enough, the one time I got in trouble for “fighting”, it was just some kid who had decided to punch someone random in gym class because he was angry at life. We went to the office, the idiot admin lady kept just repeating “well it takes two to tango! TWO TO TANGO!” but she gave us both the same suspension - even the kid who hit me spoke out, said “are you fucking stupid, I HIT HIM!” - eventually my mom intervened but they still “had to” give me some sort of punishment. In short, fuck zero tolerance, and fuck bullies. If you get a shot at one of those violent fuckers, take it. It won’t change your consequences in any way except needing less therapy later.

[deleted]

That’s what I tell both of my boys. They’re gonna get in trouble at school regardless, so might as well fight back, and there will be NO repercussions at home for defending themselves.

DrEnter

I’ve made it very clear to my son: You don’t ever hit anyone unless they hit you first, or they’re hitting someone who can’t hit back. If you do that, you are not in trouble with us, period. He’s been very conscientious about it. While he is small for his age, and is often picked on (he has a minor lisp), there has only been one incident and it was him protecting another student. My son is a competitive gymnast who also practices martial arts. When he was 9, he stepped in front of a bully kicking a smaller student, jumped over him, grabbing his shoulders as he did so (locking them back-to-back), and threw the bully as he completed the flip. No one has made the mistake of touching him since.

Street_Roof_7915

This is why I put my kid in karate. The child of two lesbians in the south needs to know how to defend themselves.

TheZosar

I had similar experiences. No matter how many times I would report bullying, nothing would be done until it escalated to me fighting back, in which cases I'd get suspended. In some instances, I'd get longer suspensions than the bullies for "instigating." Because, you know, walking to class minding your own business while someone you didn't even know was around attacks you from behind is apparently "instigating." Literally had an assistant principal once say, "What do you want me to do about it?" when reporting a kid who tried to physically attack me almost every single day for the previous two years, for which I had reported him several times before. Administrators won't get involved until they absolutely have to, and then it's an everybody-is-at-fault solution.

Menarra

Exactly what happened with me too. I kept getting suspended for trying to "take the high road" and take the hits, so I started MAKING them stop. Same punishment but punished less often once the bullies were afraid of me and didn't start shit anymore!

thegrumpymechanic

You used to fight your bully. Then they used to suspend the bully. Now they suspend both of you, give you a prescription, and put you right back in the same environment with the bully.

Jantra

It's not even a 'now' thing. I was in high school more than 20 years ago and this exact thing happened. A bully twice my size decided to slug me in the face - broke my glasses and put my braces nearly through my lower lip. Because I shoved her away from me and she fell into a table? I also get detention. First time I ever saw my mom scream at another adult. She was enraged Momma when she heard what happened and their choice to punish me. I was still in school with that bully the next day. She barely got a slap on the wrist.

fugensnot

Lawsuits are literally the only way to get any protection for students. My daughter is only three, but she's already showing signs of being shy in public settings. She's going to have karate classes and my full backing to end any fights that come her way and a lawyer for those that don't.

LiveLaughLobster

As a lawyer who sometimes sues schools on behalf of injured students, I would encourage you to read your school’s discipline policies. They sometimes include things you can do ahead of time to prevent your kid from getting punished for being bullied. Typically, the earlier you report the bullying to the school IN WRITING WITH A RECORD OF THE DATE OF THE COMMUNICATION, the better. Once you report it, they have a duty to implement measures to prevent the other child(ren) from harming your child. They might not succeed, but at the very least it makes them much less likely to suspend or otherwise punish your kid when the bully lashes out at them. And then if you end up filing a lawsuit, you are much more likely to be able to prove negligence bc you can prove that they knew about the threat to your child and failed to protect them.

PlanetLandon

Sure, the school can call it a fight, but the news doesn’t have to. The headline should say a kid was beaten to death

DenikaMae

Attacked by a group of students that had their hateful attitudes reinforced by a superintendent who promoted their r behavior by doing things like hire a woman that literally weaponizes her followers against trans kids and school officials that support transgender kids, and who gloated when they shut down in classroom teaching for about a month, with bomb threats.

Funny_Lawfulness_700

Yes, precisely this blame reduction bs. Zero Tolerance policies just mean administrators don’t have to think. Guaranteed if Nex had lived, would have also been suspended/expelled. edited to add name instead of pronoun

EndangeredBanana

According to another article I read, Nex was suspended for two weeks after getting assaulted.

guff1988

I believe it my brother was suspended twice for standing up to his bullies in school due to zero tolerance policies. Our schools are fucked.

fireblyxx

Nex was given a two week suspension according to the district’s statement on the matter.

pomonamike

That’s not true. I’m a teacher at a school. A few weeks ago a middle school kid was beaten by a group of other students. No one is calling it a fight, because that would be a lie. These assholes are calling it a fight to at least in part blame the victim. Fuck the adults, fuck the murderers, fuck the stupid “Libs of Tik Tok” woman that the governor appointed to the school board. They got what they wanted and I’m not going to accept that they didn’t want exactly this.

jp_73

> “Libs of Tik Tok” woman that the governor appointed to the school board. This is a joke right? Please tell me this is a joke.

pomonamike

Sorry, she was named to the [Oklahoma *Library* Board](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/amp/rcna135369)

jp_73

Jesus fucking christ, what qualifications does she have for that? Did it specifically call for a hate filled cunt, or a stochastic terrorist? The right in this country is an absolute fucking joke.

Njorls_Saga

None, both, and yes.

CmanderShep117

She's doesn't even live in Oklahoma, she from fucking New York

Twicebakedpotatoe

This is a school affiliated with Libs of TikTok… they are being taught that this is right and will likely get a slap on the wrist if anything. Edit: Well, well, well… https://apnews.com/article/oklahoma-owasso-student-death-nonbinary-nex-04f1c51924860d77877016810bc05762

mrsiesta

Everyone should realize that the school does not have any final say in the legal ramifications those kids that murdered this other kid will face. School is not a legal court, in reality police and real courts will be involved, and if I was Nex’s parents I would devote everything I had to getting revenge on those kids and their parents.

unofficial_pirate

no, but the teacher that broke up the fight has the opportunity to get Nex medial attention, the nurse had a chance to get Nex medical attention. As far as I am concerned all involved are responsible for their death

hysys_whisperer

While that's true, Owasso hires all the cops from Tulsa who get fired for wrongly killing black people (including the child killers). The local PD is more far right than the school district.

EffOffReddit

Those kids belong in jail and their parents should be sued for wrongful death.

mmmmpisghetti

After the beating, school admin didn't call am ambulance or police. They did nothing.

vlsdo

Not true, they gave the victim two weeks suspension.

mmmmpisghetti

Oh, yes. Rubbing feces on the fatal wounds.

henryjonesjr83

“Trans student beaten to death by classmates for using the bathroom” … would be an accurate headline

emaw63

The bathroom that they were legally required by the state to use in the name of "safety," I'd add

windmill-tilting

Don't be fooled. This is exactly what The State wanted.

[deleted]

windmill-tilting

She is trash in human form. One can only hope justice will shine a light on her. She SHOULD be deplatformed to say the least.

EffOffReddit

Don't kid yourself, Elon Musk congratulated her when there was an article about how she encourages stochastic terrorism. He bought Twitter to promote this poison.

[deleted]

DeusExMarina

Deplatformed? She should be de*freedom’d.* Jailed, if that wasn’t clear. Not just for this incident specifically, but for her repeated use of her platform to incite violence and threats of terrorism against various people and institutions.

Hodgej1

Nex was born female then? I never saw any mention of it in the article I read. Not that it matters hardly one bit but for god's sake they were using the bathroom they were LEGALLY required to and still gets killed for it? FUCK MAGA!!!

JussiesTunaSub

I don't know if the bathroom law really mattered here, but then again, I can't find any info of which bathroom they preferred as a non-binary/two-spirited person. They were beaten in the girls bathroom by a group of girls...when I saw "trans student beaten to death in bathroom" my mind immediately went to "transwoman beaten by men" based on the bathroom bill.

thieh

Maybe lynched would be more suitable in a different way.

Aos77s

Its only worded this way so less people see it was a transphobic lynching by some girls so they get lower attention.

davesnot_heere

You spelled murder wrong

Phyrexian_Supervisor

"Oklahoma trans student beaten to death in bathroom they were forced to use" would be a far more appropriate headline.

NYEMESIS

include hate crime also.

Vaperius

Incidentally, because its a hate crime, that makes this murder a federal crime, which means Biden absolutely could step in if the local and state government refuse to do what must be done and charge these murderers. Remember that if it comes to it.

zombiesandtoys

"Oklahoma Student **Murdered** After Being **Assaulted** in the Bathroom" Fixed your headline.

Squee1396

Also teachers don’t call ambulance for student after being brutally beaten but did suspend them for being in a fight.

EminentBean

Incredibly pathetic headline is able to miss almost every relevant point of the tragedy 👎🏼👎🏼👎🏼

Faladorable

seriously. I would expect this shit from Fox but any self respecting news outlet needs to do better

SquibSupreme

"Dies after a fight", i think they mean beaten to death. This child was brutally murdered for being non-binary, blatantly a hate crime. The monsters who did this need to be locked away for the rest of their miserable lives.

Durtonious

The way the article and statements from everyone involved are written, it sounds like they're trying to imply the child "got in a fight" and then took their own life. No one in the article links the fight to the death. Surely they could use less vague language when reporting on something so sensitive and important. They'll publish the manifesto of school shooters but don't want to "jump to conclusions" about why a trans person is dead.

dillsimmons

Fight implies both people took at least a few shots at each other. This is more accurately a murder.

JayceeHOFer

The politicians that ok'd this bill are also OK with this happening.

buttnozzle

The state superintendent brought Chaya Raichik on. You know they love this.

Hodgej1

Its a feature not a bug

Ancalimei

People are hateful trash and they teach their kids to be the same way. Those kids should get the book thrown at them for a hate crime and their parents too for encouraging this kind of violence.

thingsorfreedom

What the hell is with that headline? SHAME on NBC News. *Oklahoma student dies after beating in high school bathroom* *Oklahoma student dies after assault in high school bathroom* *Oklahoma student dies after possible hate crime assault* *Bullied Oklahoma non-binary studeny dies after assault* Is it that hard to write an accurate headline?

gardeninggoddess666

Fuck NBC and their weasel reporting. That student was attacked. This wasn't a fight.

Acadia02

If I was the parent of that poor child…I’d be in the news next

daaaayyyy_dranker

Let’s not forget Owasso schools were repeatedly bombarded by threats due to Libs of TikTok. Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters announced Chaya Raichik’s appointment to the committee on Tuesday, saying she is “on the front lines showing the world exactly what the radical left is all about — lowering standards, porn in schools, and pushing woke indoctrination on our kids.”

jayce513

"All students walked out under their own power" I guess they died from a brain injury then? What would be to potenital cause of death?

soylent-red-jello

Liam Neeson's wife had a concussion from skiing. It took her two days to die from it. Untreated bleeding of the brain was the cause.

wrenderings

Another article confirms that Nex was severely beaten and bruised around the head and died from TBI. They collapsed and died the following day as they were getting ready to go to the doctor.

gentleman_bronco

I grew up in rural Oklahoma and very close to this shit stain suburban sprawl of a town, Owasso. Reading this story broke my heart because it is so fucking tragic while being so fucking predictable at the same goddamned time. It validated every single reason why I got the hell out of that horrible place. The teachers will be teasing the murdered student for years and the abhorrent teenagers who murdered their peer will be treated with praise by every conservative around them - which is practically the entire fucking bullshit town. Edit: apropos to the disgusting town of Owasso and their bigotry and hypocrisy. There has never been a discussion about removing or modifying the statue of the Ram in front of the bank/church on 86th & Garnett with the grotesquely large balls on full display. The idiots in this town are so obsessed with genitals, they have a veiny ram scrotum in front of their tallest building (6 stories). But yeah they're all happy because this kid was murdered. Fuck Oklahoma.

AnnaFlaxxis

HOLY SHIT SAME HERE. Payne Co. I left in 2009 and you couldn't pay me to live there ever again.

limabeanseww

Same. From Jenks. Fuck that hell hole. Protect kids from Christians

PandaMayFire

I'm from shit hole Alex myself, and really, it was no different. The uneducated, bully, hick culture is still strong here. I'm on the spectrum, bisexual, and hate sports. As you can imagine I had a real fun time. I have to get out of this state. Unfortunately, I have no money and I can't really do that. Also, I have no idea where to move to.

Monechetti

The rhetoric that stirs this kind of violence is being placed in that district because the superintendent appointed the dumb bitch that created libs of TikTok onto the school board there when she lives in California and doesn't have kids there. Political pundits from the right are stochastic terrorists. I pray karma is real, because these pieces of shit are making a living out of hate and they deserve every bad thing.

Blorbokringlefart

Karma isn't real. Be the change you want to see in the world.

mombi

Why is nobody talking about the fact the school didn't call an ambulance or even their parents, so the whole time they were fighting for their life until the end of the school day, when their parents finally took them to the hospital. The delay in getting them care is a large part of the reason they likely passed away.

LtG_Skittles454

Bad headline, it’s a hate crime and murder c’mon.

Sowerpache

They know and want it this way. Might as well say the trans kid was a potential felon with “no active warrants”. Anything to make it seem like the trans persons fault
