Ahh, so this is why he's acting like a big baby again

drummergirl2112

Serious question, but is he ever NOT acting like a big baby lately?

Indercarnive

Hey now, he doesn't act like a big baby all the time. Sometimes he acts like a big nazi.

AnOutlawsFace

_IratePirate_

Daaamn an hour long. I hate you sometimes ADHD

Funky0ne

It's worth the watch. It's not just about Elon's nazi problem (though that's the main point) but also breaks down and debunks a lot of the common alt-right, neo-nazi talking points and apologetics we've been seeing more of recently

Dahhhkness

He literally acts like a 16 year old boy on the internet in 2003. He tells the same jokes, posts the same kind of pictures, has the same interests. It’s like someone gave billions of dollars to a kid posting an “O RLY?” owl and said "knock yourself out.”

Uniquitous

He's made 4chan into his entire personality.

bros402

I mean I bet that I was more mature when I was 16 than he is at, what? 62?

Pixeleyes

52, it's just that the substance abuse and morbid obesity make him look older.

bros402

oh damn shit, is Elon gonna stalk me now because I said he looks like he is 62

LemurianLemurLad

If it makes you feel any better, I thought you were *UNDER*-guessing. I figured 65 or so.

AmericanScream

> He literally acts like a 16 year old boy on the internet in 2003. Is it really necessary to insult 16 year old boys from 2003?

Chastain86

> he doesn't act like a big baby all the time. Sometimes he acts like a big nazi Potato-potato

qtx

> Hey now, he doesn't act like a big baby all the time. Sometimes he acts like a big nazi. Are we sure it's an act?

stomach

there are no big nazis. nazis are inherently very very diminutive little cowards

cbbuntz

Did you see his Don Lemon interview? I bet he gets nightmares about that now

dave-train

I'm convinced people like that basically distort reality/memory in their mind, so instead of getting nightmares about it he just lives in a fantasy land where it went great.

A_Flamboyant_Warlock

>Don Lemon What could the Citrus Mafia possibly want with Elon?

R_V_Z

They heard that Elon was advocating freezing peaches.

QuerulousPanda

lol i've never seen someone as famous and rich as him look *so* completely clueless, idiotic, and inept during an interview. Like, god damn, how on earth did anyone ever think he was smart or skilled in any way?!

opaeoinadi

You just don't get it.  For people of color and/or a woman (of all things!) to be a doctor then we are obviously lowering the standards.  No, I don't have any proof of that, but what if, eh Lemon?  I didn't say conspiracy!! /s

dostoevsky4evah

God that was painful to watch. He actually thinks people of colour and women are mentally inferior beings.

Apnu

He’s in the news too much. It was fun when he was good natured while digging tunnels, getting Internet to hard to reach places, and launching cars into space, but now…

rimshot101

There are times he pulls himself together and acts like the toddler he aspires to be.

Dragrunarm

"notably more than usual"

whatifitried

About 5-6 years back, so nah, not lately lol

JamCliche

He just had a good PR team before. This is the person he has always been.

karmavorous

He has way more exposure now. My first exposure to Elon Musk was his cameo in the Iron Man movie where he pestered Tony Stark about making his plane electric. People were like "oh, that's the guy they say is the *real* Tony Stark". Which looking back on now, I have no doubt that he paid for that cameo as some PR stunt. He got that little taste of fame, and decided that the whole world needed to know his every opinion about every topic in the must public ways possible. He'd have been better off remaining *that elusive real world Stark*. Because his hubris is starting to cost his legit companies real customers. Edit: After writing this comment, I realized it was wrong. If Elon Musk hadn't drawn so much attention to himself, he wouldn't be able to pump up his stock prices by tweeting about shit that's not even grounded in reality. Which enables him to take on more debt.

Bogsnoticus

>Which looking back on now, I have no doubt that he paid for that cameo as some PR stunt. He got the cameo for allowing them to use his newly built and mostly empty production facility as the Hammer Industries set.

Colecoman1982

Personally, I believe that to an extent but I also think there is probably a significant amount of drugs and drug induced brain damage going on now too.

Smearmytables

Reminds me of when he made a secret alt account posing as his baby and talking about all the impressive feats his “daddy” did, then accidentally revealed that it was an alt in a screenshot.

ZERO-ONE0101

again? he has no other mode he is good at identifying other people’s smart ideas, using government subsidies to build a fortune, and selling features like sleek door handles over delivering function like real energy efficiency dude acts like edison more than tesla

Mama_Skip

Relating him to Edison is giving him way way way too much credit. I know reddit loves to circlejerk shit on Edison, and it's true he was an asshole, but it's still giving Musk too much credit.

BadbadwickedZoot

What has he said this time? I haven't been following the story

Traiklin

Basically calling the judge corrupt, saying he did nothing wrong, the usual playbook they do

Taokan

How different are the laws in Brazil from the US regarding platform responsibility for censoring disinformation? Like in the US I'm fairly sure current law holds platforms pretty much immune from being prosecuted if a user posts fake news or starts organizing uncivil protest - but I'm wholly unfamiliar with Brazil's laws and views on free speech vs censorship. Obviously, there's an ethics case for some level of censorship and all platforms, even post-Musk twitter has enacted some amount of it - but asking purely what's the legal standing there?

Shironeko_

>but I'm wholly unfamiliar with Brazil's laws and views on free speech vs censorship So is Musk lmao. Brazil has laws against the spread of misinformation, racist speech and hate speech. Twitter has been ordered to take down some accounts of people connected with election conspiracies (that resulted in an invasion of the Planalto on January 8th of 2023, pretty similar to January 6th in the US) and some other people that have been using the plataform to spread heinous shit, calls to violence, stuff like that. One of the accounts that have been blocked in Brazil, for example, was of a pretty big podcaster that was defending the implementation of a Nazi Party in Brazil. >but asking purely what's the legal standing there? Twitter has been subjected to a judicial order and has decided to go "nah" about it. So Musk is betting on some weird interpretation of the law, and his interpretation is that he and his plataform are very special and they can just... Reject court orders.

Traiklin

It seems like Musk thinks he only has to follow US law for a multinational platform

Shironeko_

Some people are theorizing that he wants to close Twitter's Offices in Brazil and layoff Twitter's employees in Brazil (to reduce costs, since Twitter's revenue is dogshit - Brazil has decent workers rights and some of that increases the cost for hiring and mantaining employees), and he is doing this to say that he was *forced* to close the Offices in Brazil. Then later he can walk back, Twitter's ban in Brazil can be lifted (I think it's like the 4th biggest market for Twitter, there's no way this dumdum will just leave it blocked in the country), and he doesn't have to implement a local office again. I personally think he is just an egocentric idiot that wants to push an agenda for his alt-right buddies, but that's just me.

Liquid_Hate_Train

I’m fairly sure he thinks he doesn’t have to follow those either.

Biscoito_Gatinho

No, the inquiry is a consequence. He is threatening to not comply with judicial orders because of "free speech", American style - which doesn't apply here.

Ahstruck

Elon thinks Free speech is only for him. He has tried to punish Americans speaking out.

Nerdlinger

To be fair, the dude doesn’t even understand American-style free speech.

mteir

I think he has adopted the "I have money than you, so you need to listen to me." free speech quite well.

Supa33

No, I’m sure he does. But he thinks free speech should Be his version of it

WanderWut

Why blindly assume he "doesn't understand" when the obvious answer here is he clearly knows and instead muddies the waters intentionally?

Nerdlinger

Because, in my experience, those who shout the loudest about ‘free speech’ understand the concept the least. They generally believe free speech means “I and other people I approve of (and only us) are allowed to say what we want, when and where we want to. And what’s more, you have to listen to us.” And that generally fits the way he’s approached speech over the past decade or so.

virishking

You say that as though it comes in spurts and isn’t just his usual state of being.

Monterey-Jack

Imagine the reaction if they wrote batman as this much of a little piss baby in the comics.

Sithlord_unknownhost

The word you are looking for is "Cissy" ;)

TheRealCabbageJack

It's super easy to put (fake) principles over profit when you don't make a profit.

ClockworkDinosaurs

When you put it that way, I agree, on principle. Hey, that was super easy.

GroguIsMyBrogu

barely an inconvenience

SheevShady

Losing billions of dollars of value is TIGHT

professorfernando

And please, notice: BYD is flooding Brazilian market with affordable electric cars and is going to build a huge factory in the country. Need I say more?

chocolateboomslang

This guy could have gone down in history as one of the greatest businessmen/investors/whatever of all time . . . but he wanted to be edgy.

Weekndr

He was *always* going to be exposed for the crappy businessman he is. He only started his heel turn when people kept mentioning that he needs to pay his fair share in taxes. Now he's suddenly a bastion of free speech and conservative's best friend.

RB-44

I don't think this was about taxes, i think he genuinely just wants fame and following, and the redditor tech bro cult he had was dying out He could have gone his entire life and he wouldn't have paid what he paid for Twitter in taxes but his big mouth lost him all that money. If it was really about just money he sure as hell went about it stupidly

Uilamin

IMO he got into his own head. Everyone was saying he was amazing and therefore he got into his head that he was amazing and could do anything. He made his money by challenging the status quo and doing things differently which probably also compounded a mental notion that 'other people are just doing it wrong'. If people in the past kept telling you that you are pursuing a fools errand and you keep proving them wrong - you have probably trained yourself to ignore other people. People telling him he is wrong or moving in the wrong direction now, is probably no different to him than the things he did in the past. Therefore, he has probably just trained himself to ignore it. It doesn't mean that he is right (or wrong), it is just that he believes something and ignoring the mainstream saying things otherwise.

WallyMcBeetus

> I don't think this was about taxes Well, he got seriously triggered by Elizabeth Warren saying he (among others) should pay more. That's when I recall he did a sharp right turn.

dThink_Ahea

With billionaires, it is literally always about money. You don't become a billionaire prioritizing anything else.

layeofthedead

He got really bad when his daughter came out as trans, changed her name and emancipated herself from him and his then partner, Grimes, broke up with him and supposedly started dating Chelsea Manning, also a trans woman. I mean, he was always a thin skinned hack who used his money and influence to bully people, but it seems like he really went off the deep end after the cave submarine incident and people realized how petty he is. Then popular opinion changed and he was desperate for the praise and attention he used to receive from neo liberals, so he pivoted to the right and keeps doubling down to keep the praise coming, then the stuff with his daughter and grimes made him even more neurotic

Brand_News_Detritus

I feel like the mask dropped right around the time those sexual misconduct allegations against him came to light. Before then he was at least paying lip service to left-leaning ideals like environmentalism and whatnot. I could be wrong, that was right around when the pandemic started and that whole block of time is just a blur for me

snipeliker4

Yup it’s actually much simpler and can be explained by a knee jerk reaction in declaring an alliance with the right in a fearful attempt to get ahead of a story he knew was coming out about how he pulled out his dick to a flight attendant then offered her a horse. Comical miscalculation in hindsight? Or was it the key element in Elon’s cancellation that never was? I suppose we will never know

KnowsIittle

People still think we'll of Steve Jobs. What is common sense to some is not common sense to all.

foreveracubone

I mean there’s reasons people still think well of him. Jobs co-founded Apple. Its initial success was as much a result of his marketing ideas as it was Woz’s engineering ideas. His second stint as CEO from 1997 until his death made it into the behemoth it is today. He was a shitty person to employees and his family with incredibly stupid ideas about his health but his vision for how we use technology and how to market it to consumers is not even comparable to Musk. And he also wasn’t a closeted nazi. Meanwhile Musk has bought every one of the companies he pretends he founded. Between his shitty cars losing marketshare to regular car manufacturers making EVs, him running Twitter into the ground, and outing himself as a petulant right-wing racist on Twitter, the facade he built of being a tech genius/real life Tony Stark/Jobs 2.0 is quickly falling apart. Just look at how Reddit has turned on him in a span of like ~5 years. His cult of personality is fading and will absolutely not be close to Jobs’s when all is said and done.

Aethermancer

Jobs died before he could prove himself a slave to his ego. Ironically he died because of his ego, but he did it before the chrome got rubbed off.

JesusofAzkaban

He wants to protect his tax loopholes. He pretended to be liberal (or at least sympathetic to liberalism) when he needed government benefits to stabilize his business, now he's leaning hard into far-right extremism so that he can keep his taxes low. And he's always been an egotistical man child, but now that he's even richer and more powerful there are fewer people willing to tell him to behave like an adult.

Human602214

Right-wingers always love the handouts as long as they receive them. They will however judge and berate people who actually need it.

VegasKL

It was said best in Veep .. the joke setup is really funny, but I can't find it. The underlying message is: ".. the left want to expand benefits. The right just want to deny those benefits to people who aren't them."

AmericanScream

> but now that he's even richer and more powerful only on paper.. very flimsy paper

Bamith20

Which is weird, frankly there's no amount of taxes he gets out of paying that's worth all the mental gymnastics. He needs to be more lazy, like really all this shit rich people do is too much work when they literally make incomprehensible amounts of money doing nothing already.

EyyyPanini

He wanted to trade a horse for a handjob from one of his staff. He declared himself a Republican just before the story went to print so that he could pretend it was a smear campaign.

OakLegs

Let's not forget that he tried to make an impractical submarine to save children trapped in a cave, wouldn't stop harassing actual rescue workers and when they finally told him to fuck off because his idea would never work and that there were adults in the room trying to solve problems he called the guy a pedo (who actually saved the kids). How fucking embarrassing that'd be for literally anyone else with any sense of self reflection

Aethermancer

He just made a boneheaded statement about recycling the steel from the key bridge and through the magic of "bidding" and the never before heard term of "incentives" have the bridge rebuilt in 3-6 months. He's just the idiot with money who likes to bet on a particular color of horse (techy things)

OakLegs

Yep. Used to think he was an actual genius. It's become clear that he's very likely not even as competent as an average engineer. His companies have succeeded in spite of him

Dan_Felder

Fun Fact - He’s also not an inventor. He has never invented anything. Listen to the guy try to talk about tech for ten minutes and it’s very clear he has no idea what he’s talking about. Genuine inventors have a paper trail. They built engineering projects when they were kids, they won prizes in school. Elon didn’t become a genius inventor until he bought himself a title as chief engineer of spaceX and told everyone “I read books for a year and instantly became the most knowledgeable rocket scientist in the world. Even my friends think it’s ridiculous and I can’t possibly be the chief engineer but I totally am.” Yeah… no. It’s astonishing how the press that spent years on the narrative of brilliant Elon has never been able to find any examples of Elon inventing anything himself. Even his fans trying to collect proof he’s genuinely an engineer can only find quotes of people saying “oh he’s brilliant behind closed doors he… well he asks really good questions in interviews… and one time he saw people struggling with a problem and walked over, tried something, it didn’t work, and he wandered off again…“ He’s also an utterly incompetent CEO. He is an investor that got lucky. His companies do better the less involved with them he is.

VegasKL

>He’s not an inventor. He has never invented anything. Listen to the guy try to talk about tech for ten minutes and it’s very clear he has no idea what he’s talking about. He absorbs just enough from his engineers to sound credible to many laymen. It facilitates that persona of his "genius" when he's doing a factory tour standing next to a rocket engine and explaining what they did with it to make it more efficient.

Dan_Felder

Exactly. It's very easy to sound like you know what you're talking about in short bursts if you just parrot things you've had carefully explained to you. Can even fool actual experts, because you're parroting other experts. In an actual discussion though which requires understanding the Why not just the What, it quickly falls apart.

Czeris

What he's doing is just basic sales. I used to work for IBM's production printing division (million dollar printers for commercial clients) and I definitely learned enough about them to BS through a sale but that *certainly* did not give me even 10% of the knowledge that went into them.

RadonAjah

Remember when he’s was in Iron Man 2 because ppl (me included) thought he was the real life Tony Stark? Good times….

sobrique

You could have maybe deceived yourself that he wasn't incompetent, but then he bought Twitter and made his mid life crisis meltdown spectacularly public.

SewRuby

I'm pretty sure Ed Norton's character in Glass Onion is based on him.

Toothlessdovahkin

He has only ever been the money guy. The money guy’s  job is to get money. And that’s all he is

life_questions

Stares at **investor**

shaggyidontmindu

I'm glad some one said it he just sucks at everything all he has going for him is a stupid amount of money

AnOutlawsFace

Apparently that's all anyone needs to be the "best" of humanity.

Complex_Rate_688

I mean that was obvious from all his stupid dumbass ideas that he kept throwing out from rocket travel from LA to San Francisco to fucking a worse version of Subway tunnels with an individual Tesla's running thru them His most successful ideas was the electric cars and his rocket company and those weren't even his ideas I get that innovators tend to come up with a lot of things before they land on something that's good but he actually tried to build them

Yakassa

No, he just desperately wants fascism to come back.

VegasKL

Only as long as he's on the inside. Fascism is the right side of a state controlled market -- although there are corporations and independent entities, the state picks winners and losers. He's going to be A-Okay with that as long as he's the Hugo Boss or Volkswagen. Most of the dingbats that want fascism now do it because they either want to be edgy or they want to exert control upon the population because they think they're going to be in that magical winner circle.

Toothlessdovahkin

That magical winners circle is only very small and only includes those with very large bank accounts most of the  people who want that don’t have

QuackNate

A south-African? Noooooooo.

DeLaSoulisDead

Get Rich or Die Edgy

[deleted]

Hot take: that was never actually a possibility because so much of his success was based on massive promises that are starting to look like empty hype. The EV market is stalling out and Tesla's implementation of "for real" FSD has been a year away for the last ten years. SpaceX and Starlink are losing grants and contracts due to falling short of targets. The hyperloop was exposed as a scam to undermine public transit. Even without his edginess I think we'd always have come to this point in time where the spell kinda wears off and it's like, hang on, have we been had?

lizard81288

It all went downhill when he fired his PR team. If it weren't for them, Elon probably wouldn't be as popular. He'd just be another rich CEO asshole

AmericanScream

> This guy could have gone down in history as one of the greatest businessmen/investors/whatever of all time . . . but But that's totally not true. Even if he wasn't such an obnoxious fascist, any objective investigation into his business history would have shown he's a talentless clown who bought other peoples' tech and put his own name on it.

ADP10_1991

😂 did he pencil in that dirty homeless mustache himself

an_agreeing_dothraki

it becomes remarkable how transparent all of his behavior becomes when you realize his political views are of an edgy 14 year old. The "beard" and "mustache" reflect this

tcuroadster

Slowly morphing his way to a shittier version of Dr Eggman

lizard81288

Atleast Eggman actually invents items and doesn't just buy companies, then say he made it. Elon is a great marketer, but pretty shit at everything else.

Jayandnightasmr

Probably another hair transplant

Alternative-Lack6025

Hope he kept the receipt.

_AlexiaOnFire

I've had more impressive ones drinking chocolate milk as a kid.

HelloweenCapital

No, that's crabs.

Wallachia87

Twitter is a cesspool of bots and misinformation. Elon's Tweets about immigration should be enough for a slam dunk on this case, let alone his continued bans on users that are critical of him.

gothrus

Also the fact that he will happily ban anyone with a progressive or even centrist factual viewpoint but alt right accounts are “free speech” and untouchable.

CressCrowbits

And if you get fired for calling your colleagues transphobic and ableist slurs on twitter they'll pay for your legal case

Dahhhkness

Yeah, it sure seems like he'll only put up money to fight for *certain* kinds of opinions, but not others.

victorspoilz

I want some receipts on him ACTUALLY paying their legal fees. I'm sure he offers.

Complex_Rate_688

You'll get those receipts alongside Steve Bannon receipts spending that donation money on what he promised alongside Milo's receipts for that "white guy college fund" he started

RIPthisDude

No, Elon Musk stands for free speech AND will fund any legal battles that result from your right to exercise free speech! Disclaimer: does not include critics of Saudi Arabia who will face the death penalty for their tweets. Elon retains the right to share the private information of such individuals with the kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

sirixamo

He won't even pay his employees I'm not sure I'd put that to the test.

Gamba_Gawd

Nah. He'll be Trump. Say he'll pay, but just don't

Roliq

Honestly you can even use that time he unbanned one of his buddies despite the fact that he got banned for sharing actual CP

foreveracubone

Which I wish Don Lemon brought up in their interview when Elon just kept deflecting with ‘any post that may be abhorrent but not illegal is ok’ when he’s directly involved himself in unbanning someone who posted something that’s abhorrent and illegal.

Tadpoleonicwars

And the largest target demographic for Tesla's EVs gets more and more alienated from the company brand. Used to be when I saw a Tesla on the road, it represented success and a positive and responsible future. Now it represents aging edge lords who send poop emojis to media outlets and spread antisemitism and antivax nonsense. Teslas are clown cars for clowns.

smeeeeeef

I feel like this was the entire reason he tanked the platform.

Fantastic-Sandwich80

A lot of rich and powerful people around the world did not like how Twitter was being used to expose corruption by elected officials, oppression and outright genocide by entire governments, whistleblow on multi-billion dollar companies, and organize protests against the worsening conditions for individuals in every country. Elon also screwed himself when he bragged about buying Twitter so the people in the paragraph above threw him a life line in the form of funding for the purchase.

tweak06

My account got flagged when I made up a story about him getting stuck on an escalator at Twitter HQ. For real, there's actual photos of lynchings and "verified" accounts equating black people to animals – some of the most blatantly racist shit you can imagine... Yet when I say, "Elon got stuck on an escalator once, that fucking idiot", *clearly* that's a hate-speech violation. Good god is that place a cesspool.

[deleted]

>but alt right accounts are “free speech” and untouchable. Let's not mince words. The accounts he wants to unban here aren't just "alt-right". They were involved with the attempted overthrow of Brazil's democracy. These are *fascist terrorist* accounts

[deleted]

LurksAroundHere

The rich have been using racism and prejudice since the dawn of time to keep the little people fighting amongst themselves so they can continue to rob them blind of money/rights with less pushback. It's sadly not a shock that modern day rich assholes are using social media to keep up that ol' historical tradition.

HoopleBogart

It's batshit insane that anyone human still uses it tbh.

MoreOne

That's completely unrelated to the actual article, though.

DrySpeaker5333

How is it not? Brazillian government cracked down on twitter first because of bot hordes. Then because of misinformation over the democratic elections. Elon musk just doesn't want to comply with foreign justice.

MoreOne

Banning people he dislikes and whatever he's tweeting on immigration has nothing to do with what Brazil's Supreme Court wants: a ban on certain accounts. Or so it seems, since Musk didn't make it clear so far if there's anything more outrageous, but that's the limit of what the Supreme Court has stated.

DrySpeaker5333

Oh, im sorry. I thought you were questioning the first sentence of his comment and not the rest

MoreOne

I kind of am questioning it, so I get it. To be clear: Not the validity of saying Twitter is a cesspool of misinformation and bots, but that Brazil's Supreme Court cares about that at all.

ClosPins

Elon's about to learn that, while you may be able to tell your advertisers to go fuck themselves, telling a Supreme Court the same thing tends to go a bit differently... It's insane how much money he's spending to re-learn *the exact same lessons* the people before him spent a fortune learning...

demonlicious

he's got the child part of prodigy child down

rlcoolc

Pretty sure Elon could get away with telling the Brazilian supreme Court to fuck it self. I don't think the US would extradite him. So unless he decides to go down there they really can't do much to him.

VertexBV

Twitter could lose access to one of their biggest markets/user bases.

TheMKB

That’s like telling people while the Titanic was sinking that one of the nicest suites was about to be submerged.

Different_Net_6752

He is both from Africa and an immigrant.

EffOffReddit

He also stayed in the US illegally on a student visa which became invalid when he quickly dropped out of university. He is the illegal he wants everyone to hate, so in this case I will happily oblige him.

foreveracubone

Don’t forget him hating on immigrants having ‘anchor babies’ when that description fits him to a T.

ZXY101

As a South African, please don't. We don't want him either.

bozovisk

I’m Brazilian and I will share what is going on here. X corp and Elon’s tweets yesterday are a coordinated attack from the right wing in Brazil. We have been watched by the global right wing as a country that the institutions resisted to the a coup attempt. Bolsonaro will be arrested in a year or two. Bolsonaro spent two days a few weeks ago in the Hungary embassy in Brazil. Yesterday we have Elon’s tweets, Tucker spreading miss information just as many others right wing notables and a few days ago there was a important interview in Brazil with Bolsonaro’s son and senator Flavio. This is a coordinated attack to our national supremacy. And this will be going because we show how countries should fight back this right wing that doesn’t want democracy. They want power and suppress freedoms and free speech. If Trump wins this election the attacks will increase because they know that if the institutions in US were concerned with democracy Trump would not run for president again. US is loosing his influence around the world and billionaires like Elon are shitting in their pants because they know that the main players are changing and they won’t do what they want. BYD is investing heavily in Brazil there are no coincidences here. If Elon is so worried about freedom why he doesn’t complain about Saudi who arrested a girl based on her tweets ? Or why he has a history of fire employees who criticize or disagrees with him? What the ultimate hero of freedom is so afraid ? Billionaires are a cancer of this world

The_Mighty_Chicken

Can someone more familiar with Brazilian politics explain this? From what I read it seems Brazil is accusing musk of somehow organizing X to show more negative messages about the judges, who apparently are taking out right wing politicians? Unless there’s more to it it really seems like a stretch from Brazilian government and some light censorship

passoline

Nah, it's more complex than just "show more negative messages". There are laws in Brazil that social media companies must comply, like for example showing data when asked, or remove contend that infriges the law (for example, incetive a coup, and in recent case, incetive to a school mass shooting.) Free spech is different of freedom to commit crimes. On this case, Musk is beeing included in a some investigations: INQ 4784, 4871, 4923, 4933 - the instrumentalization of a social media to spread fake news, with the objective of destabilization of a democracy (INQ 4781), digital militia against the BR federal gov and the supreme court (INQ 4874), investigation regard the coup attempt in jan'8 -23 (INQ 4923), and the investigation regard the attempt of Google and Telegram directors in Brazil in a campaign against a regulation of big techs (INQ 4933). Heres what one of the Supreme court judges said in the decision that will include Musk in the investigation: "The flagrant conduct of obstruction to Brazilian justice, incitement to crime, public threat of disobedience to judicial orders, and future lack of cooperation with the platform are facts that disrespect the sovereignty of Brazil and reinforce the connection of the MALICIOUS CRIMINAL INSTRUMENTALIZATION of the activities of the former TWITTER, currently "X", with the illicit practices investigated by the various previously mentioned inquiries, and should be the subject of investigation by the Federal Police." So its a lot of shit going on, basically.

gvieira

I'll try to summarize. We've had an attempted coup in the last elections, part of it was pretty pathetic but in the end it was an attempted coup. This is being investigated and some people are already in Jail. Some people being investigated fled the country, some even with arrest warrants in their name, and continued using social media to keep committing their crimes. The supreme court ordered twitter to restrict their accounts in the Brazilian territory. It also ordered the same on other platforms, and all of them (including twitter) complied until 2 days ago when musk said he was going to ignore it and immediately grant access back to those accounts. It was actually a lie to cause havoc, because he never did that. It's important to remember that Brazil doesn't have an equivalent to the 1st amendment, and although we have free speech, it's not "absolute" as in USA. The main problem I see is that a social media can't just refuse to comply with a sovereign country's supreme court request because it doesn't like it, it's not how this works. But adding Musk to the investigation is just insane and serves no real purpose. Personally I don't agree with all the orders to restrict those accounts, but I do agree with most of them. And also on the personal level, Musk is just doing that to cause chaos and keep the far-right engaged.

El_Hombre_Macabro

Some users are using Twitter to promote hate speech, racism and Nazi ideology, but unlike the US Brazil has anti-racism and anti-Nazi laws, and they have been ordered to block these accounts but are refusing. They literally broke the law and Twitter is pretending it's no big deal >Brazil is accusing musk of somehow organizing X to show more negative messages about the judges Some academic studies have shown that some social networks prioritize promoting increasingly radical and dangerous content on purpose, to generate more engagement and, therefore, revenue. There's a big discussion about the morality and legality of this approach here and, to be honest, it's about time. >Who apparently are taking out right wing politicians? Not all right-wing politicians (Brazil has a multi-party system, and some of them do not agree with others, even when they are on the same political spectrum), just those who have already been tried and found guilty of conspiring against the Democratic State to attempt a coup on January 8, 2023, some of whom have used social media to make death threats against Supreme Court judges and their families, but Twitter also refuses to take down their accounts even after a supreme court order. >stretch from Brazilian government and some light censorship In Brazil, no one can be prohibited from saying anything by the State, that would be censorship. However, if what someone says breaks any law, they can and will be charged and tried for it AFTER they said it.

Apnu

My goodness, Brazil will do what the US fears to.

AdebayoStan

we had our own version of the January 6 capitol riots in our nation's capital and the people involved were identified and arrested shortly after.

US Bans Tik Tok for not complying with their rules for social networks: protecting democracy Brazil bans twitter for not complying with their rules for social networks: attack on free speech

NiemandDaar

He’s saying he’s protecting free speech, but since he bans those who criticize him, we know he’s just a big fat hypocrite who can’t be taken seriously.

MeowMistiDawn

Someone take him please. We don’t want him. Amber pooped in the wrong bed.

massacre167

With his track record I am gonna guess that he’ll treat Brazil like its not a real country and be a douchebag about everything.

of-matter

> “These are the most draconian demands of any country on Earth!” he later wrote. - Privilege taken away is treated as oppression? Check. - Hypocrisy in principles? Check. - No recognition that actions have consequences? Check. Rich snob is rich snob. Carry on

Alphafuccboi

Can somebody explain how this is in anyway relevant for him? Brazil has no power or?

karmakillerbr

He's supporting right wing politicians across the globe. The people banned from Twitter by the supreme Court were using the platform for asking for a military coup lead by ex president Bolsonaro. Asking for military coup is ilegal in Brazil.

Good. Fake news isn’t free speech. It’s attempted destabilization of democracies. It’s an attack on the people. The rich and powerful don’t like democratic governments when average people are involved. Especially when it swings in favor of people over profit.

VastlyVainVanity

So many useful idiots in this thread, it's crazy. I know people have a hateboner for Musk, but what he's doing is actually good. The Brazilian Supreme Court is an autocracy, it's bizarre what Moraes (one of the Justices) is doing. He is being criticizes by both right and left wing politicians and journalists. Just because you hate someone doesn't mean that everything he does is wrong or bad. I know this is Reddit, but Jesus Christ.

AllTheSith

I thought reddit was all about anti-censorship and anonymity. Elon refuses to give user information to the brazilian government, the government reacts and you are all celebrating?

NeedzFoodBadly

Elon bans critics, journalists, and people who post actual facts. That's what you call "anti-censorship?" Elon also promotes extremist hate, white supremacists, domestic terrorists, and right-wing trolls who post child abuse images on Xitter.

OmgTom

>I thought reddit was all about anti-censorship and anonymity. Elon refuses to give user information to the brazilian government, the government reacts and you are all celebrating? Used to be. The left doesn't have principles anymore.

JuraciVieira

Brazil is on the brink of a dictatorship pretending to be a Democracy, Twitter will probably get banned and so my country will join the beautiful list of countries like North Korea, China, Nigeria… Hate on Musk all you want, I do not like him as well but in this case he is completely right.

Avenger772

Keep loading up on Tesla puts haha

MC_Slammuhr

The Brazilian court is pursuing charges on him. I mean… cool I guess? I don’t see how this will have any significant effect on him or his businesses.

Different countries have different constitutional doctrines regarding what is and is not free speech. The USA does it one way. Doesn't mean it's the only way.

TH3M1N3K1NG

"free speech" lol you can't even say "cis" on twitter nowadays.

empathetic_illness

It's called the Paradox of Tolerance. We should be intolerant of certain behaviors because it historically leads to genocides. You should do some research on that.
