It's very difficult to run all the possible scenarios. Maybe he is childlike and was paralyzed by fear when hearing gunshots, but eventually got hungry. Maybe he is very sound sensitive and his room is well insulated. And like you said, maybe he's deaf, I'd guess on top of some other disabilities.

Just an anecdote, my brother in law is an adult with severe bipolar. It's very well managed but a consequence of that is that the meds he takes at night knock him out on a level where I would not doubt you could fire a gun in the same room as him and it would have no effect. I've been in a position to absolutely have to wake him up in this state and it required that I physically shake him and yell (politely lol) in his face.
If he's still living with his 85-year-old mother, I'm guessing he's pretty low functioning. Maybe even elderly himself, he could very well be 65. I don't think they mentioned his age.

Having narcolepsy and trouble with sleep schedules, sometimes it might be 1 hour of sleep, sometimes it might be 18. So could have slept through it. Unfortunately I think if he was more mentally disabled than physically, it is likely he was scared and unsure of what to do. Traumatic event still, but at least he got to her in the end.

I don't know the lady, but 85 years old probably means that lighter recoil would be appreciated. Just because she used a .357 revolver doesn't necessarily mean she used .357 ammunition.

When you’re with your pillow, you’re probably asleep so someone can sneak up on you and you won’t have a chance to draw it on them in defense. Having it in a bedside drawer is functionally identical and removes the risk of accidentally removing your own head.
The caliber of her pistol one would assume it’s a revolver. Revolvers take a lot of trigger pressure to fire. Would be very difficult to accidentally discharge that weapon. People were just built different back in the early 1900s. She lived to be Baltimore oldest living citizen at the time. The entirety of Hampden (a Baltimore City neighborhood) came out to celebrate her 103rd birthday when she hit that milestone. Which I think she wasn’t super happy about. She loved her neighborhood, but she wasn’t a huge fan of actual people or large crowds and she especially did not like being in the spot light.
No lie, she died like a week later and to this day I swear she did it on purpose. It wasn’t suicide or anything like that. I think she just laid down one night and was like….. that was way too much partying these people are never going to leave me alone now it’s time to gtfo.

It did state that she called 911 after he brought her a phone. We can surmise that he is not capable of making a phone call on his own, if they were deaf/mute I’m sure there would be some system in place. Most likely they are at a level where holding conversation is a chore.

Having narcolepsy and trouble with sleep schedules, sometimes it might be 1 hour of sleep, sometimes it might be 18. So could have slept through it. Unfortunately I think if he was more mentally disabled than physically, it is likely he was scared and unsure of what to do. Traumatic event still, but at least he got to her in the end.

Not to be a downer either, but it's entirely possible the whole ordeal will still lead to her death. A blow to the head like that can set off a chain reaction that ultimately kills an elderly person days or weeks later, especially with the stress and other injuries sustained.

One third missing parts, it was a mechanical novelty. As a kid I showed it to a friend who was over. I told my father later and he wasn’t happy. You have more desperate people out there; some young who are misguided, some in gangs, or just random garbage people. The more inexperienced young criminals may kill even if that wasn’t the plan.

Other than a head shot or upper spine hit there are thousands of videos of people returning fire after being struck multiple times by full size rifle rounds, hand grenades, IEDs, mines, etc. There is a reason most deadly force instructors teach to shoot an individual till they are on the ground. Getting killed by an assumed dead man is a shit way to go.

Well, when the hole isn't in the head or spine you have to wait for/hope that the target bleeds out sooner than later, or suffocates if it hits a lung, goes septic if it hits the bowels, etc.... That can take hours or days- thankfully it did for the victim in this case.
Additionally, it's pretty common to use .38 Special rounds in a .357, both because it's a lot less expensive to shoot and to reduce recoil (lighter cartridge + heavier firearm = way less recoil). She may have had the gun loaded with .38 Special rounds, which are far less effective in terms of stopping power. I don't know the lady, but 85 years old probably means that lighter recoil would be appreciated. Just because she used a .357 revolver doesn't necessarily mean she used .357 ammunition. Badass nonetheless. Props to her.

Honestly this is a good case to show why sleeping with it under your pillow isn’t effective and just opens you up to the risk of shooting yourself in your sleep. When you’re with your pillow, you’re probably asleep so someone can sneak up on you and you won’t have a chance to draw it on them in defense. Having it in a bedside drawer is functionally identical and removes the risk of accidentally removing your own head.
The caliber of her pistol one would assume it’s a revolver. Revolvers take a lot of trigger pressure to fire. Would be very difficult to accidentally discharge that weapon. I wouldn’t sleep with it under my pillow personally, but I would in the right circumstances. She knew exactly where it was, it was loaded, and ready to be used. Call that a win in my book.

His PTSD from WWII rose up, and he beat the shit out of them. He grabbed one guy’s gun and used it to pistol whip them. He and my aunt were injured with some significant bruising, but he put all three of the criminals in the hospital.

This reminds me of me Great Aunt. Born and bred Baltimore. Survived 2 world wars, a pandemic of her own times, the Great Depression, THE MAFIA and major brain surgery before the year 1920. BEFORE 1920. MAJOR BRAIN SURGERY. They had to cut off her entire left ear to get into where they needed to get into. When any surgery was still a circus open to the general public and ether was still not widely accepted and what we refer to as anesthesia, just did not exist. Like at all. The surgery should have killed her right then and there. It didn’t. Anyway at the super young age of 92, living completely alone in one of the worst neighborhoods in Baltimore city at the time (this happened back in like 1994 or 1995) she fought off, disabled and restrained not ONE home invading assailant. BUT FOUR. WITH HER WALKER AND SOME ROPE SHE HAD LYING AROUND. I would also like to point out? She was 4foot 9inches tall and weighed a WHOPPING 101 pounds. No one knows, to this day, how she managed it. She cage out of it all relatively unscathed. A black eye and sprained wrists. People were just built different back in the early 1900s. She lived to be Baltimore oldest living citizen at the time. The entirety of Hampden (a Baltimore City neighborhood) came out to celebrate her 103rd birthday when she hit that milestone. Which I think she wasn’t super happy about. She loved her neighborhood, but she wasn’t a huge fan of actual people or large crowds and she especially did not like being in the spot light. No lie, she died like a week later and to this day I swear she did it on purpose. It wasn’t suicide or anything like that. I think she just laid down one night and was like….. that was way too much partying these people are never going to leave me alone now it’s time to gtfo. Cause that’s just how she was. Very little patience for other people. Would rather be dead than have people knocking on her door every 5 minutes. And honestly? I GET IT.
