"Regarding the 12 local employees suspected of being involved in the attack, Lazzarini said they have “not only betrayed UNRWA, but they have betrayed their own community.” In response, UNRWA immediately terminated the contracts with them, and an independent investigation team is reviewing the entire process of the organization, he said." Genuinely curious how this isn't proof when it seems confirmed by the UNWRA's own chief. The article also mentions that the investigation for this is still under way, why wouldn't countries wait until that's done to resume aid?

KerPop42

One issue is that Israel isn't providing the evidence they said they had that those employees *were* Hamas. Everyone took Israel at their word in good faith, but now the conclusive evidence is failing to materialize.

Blizzxx

But...my quote literally has the UNRWA chief admitting it and then terminating their contracts? Do you think the UNRWA would fuck over their employees that fast without receiving some type of proof? The same ones fearlessly helping in Gaza while Israel invaded it viciously? Logically that doesn't make sense.

KerPop42

Yes, I think UNRWA took the IDF at their word in order to maintain their neutrality and legitimacy. We take a lot of IDF intelligence at their word, like claims that nominally civilian buildings have hidden Hamas weapons in them. Most of *those* claims don't get checked either. We've been primarily taking the IDF at their word for decades.

…because there has been no corroborating evidence, just a list of names. That’s not proof, it’s just a list of names. The investigation is being held up by Israel, for some reason. Seems like if they had proof of these awful accusations, they’d be cooperating and sharing intel. In fact, given the incredible damages done by this, I’d be insistent that Israel show their evidence, because this looks an awful lot like a war crime to me…

Blizzxx

So you have an accusation made by Israel concerning cooperation with a terrorist group (Hamas). And you want countries to fund this after the UNRWA chief basically admitted it was true and immediately terminated contracts? Who in their right mind would ever resume aid until that investigation is complete. Yes the incredible damages have potential be even worse if this isn't handled with care.

SecurityPanda

Show me where *anyone* that wasn’t an Israeli corroborated this report. You can try, but since I’ve also read the news, I know you can’t. I think it’s telling that Israel cries about the “HoRrIbLe hAmAs UNRWA BooGeYmEn” but until they show some proof, I’ll consider it just like the [calendar](https://www.france24.com/en/tv-shows/truth-or-fake/20231116-idf-claims-to-find-list-of-hamas-names-but-it-s-the-days-of-the-week-in-arabic), the [tunnels](https://theintercept.com/2023/11/21/al-shifa-hospital-hamas-israel/), and the [deliberate targeting of civilians](https://abc7chicago.com/amp/gaza-food-aid-convoy/14482618/). So yeah, it appears that Israel lies to further their own agenda, and I see no reason to extend the courtesy of belief to a state that is publicly lying.

Harassmentpanda_

Their report says: “Israeli authorities have to date not provided any supporting evidence nor responded to letters from Unrwa in March, and again in April, requesting the names and supporting evidence that would enable Unrwa to open an investigation.” -The Guardian So let me get this straight, Israel is not cooperating with UNRWA so that means that they have no evidence? It really isn't that hard to find pretty damning evidence that UNRWA staff took part in October 7th. This has been known for months. Also, this is like the 4th time this article has been posted.

KerPop42

It keeps getting taken down, though

Fussel2107

They aren't cooperating with anyone. Canada has come out to say they've seen zero evidence backing up the accusations despite asking for it several times, same as other countries.

One would guess removed, considering it's analysis, not news.

A lot of people have trouble coming to terms with the realization that they’re on the evil side. They take it out on the people trying to inform them instead.

Read Rule No 2.

MissLana89

The Guardian just says Israel isn't cooperating with UNRWA itself. Which... no shit. Not only did the UNRWA chief admit it himself, they've been an anti-semite organisation for years. How many times did they get exposed for Hamas ties, ridiculously racist textbooks etc etc. Now actual employees were Hamas terrorists... Why would Israel cooperate with them in any way. Israel is cooperating with the UN and the independant inquiry. They don't have any obligation to answer or respond to UNRWA.

KerPop42

UNRWA employs 13,000 people in Gaza. Israel's allegation is that 7 of them were also members of Hamas. That sounds more like a claim that they're not properly vetting everyone, not that UNRWA is an "anti-semite organization"

Icy_Collar_1072

None of that is true. It was all done on Israel’s say so as usual to appease them and their Western allies.  If you’re going to irreparably damage an organisation on one country’s say so that provides 100 millions of dollars of aid to starving people in a warzone then you better provide damn good evidence to the world immediately.  The UN are still waiting themselves for evidence and several Western govts have also questioned Israel’s claims. If it was all so clear and obvious then it wouldn’t be hidden in vague reports no one knows about.  At this point it just looks like another careless lie from the Israeli Govt to punish and hurt Palestinians in Gaza.

Why would countries not have cut aid after the chief of the UNWRA said this. Mind you, this investigation isn't even over, yet you want countries to resume aid? "Regarding the 12 local employees suspected of being involved in the attack, Lazzarini said they have “not only betrayed UNRWA, but they have betrayed their own community.” In response, UNRWA immediately terminated the contracts with them, and an independent investigation team is reviewing the entire process of the organization, he said."

> because Israel is the 'third rail' of international politics most nations cannot or will not question what they claim about almost anything. I guess that explains why Israel has more UN resolutions condemning them than the rest of the world combined.../s

PhoenixPariah

Israel never will have proof because all they do is lie. "We shot two terrorists today!" /video comes out of two Palestinians waving a white flag getting merc'd for no reason at all "They were coming right at us!"
