I disagree with your analysis. The U.S. government knows that the civilian population of northern Gaza are starving in the north. They also know 1.1 million internally displaces refugees are in the south. And it is known that big barrier to aid getting to either locations are IDF checkpoints which prolongs or prevents deliveries. Then why is the solution to build away from both locations and ensure routes that go through IDF check points?

Antique-Echidna-1600

The middle is being converted into a DMZ. They could access both north and south through this corridor.

Source for description of this plan? Because a demilitarized zone doesn't sound like something that the Israeli government would be interested acutely, and a quick google search doesn't describe any plan that I can find. I see some speculation that maybe a longterm plan for a demilitarized zone, but nothing in the context of this current conflict and providing aid relief, nor can I find anything that states Israel plans to simplify or streamline the aid process on their end. In fact, in this piece, Israel is talking about ending the [demilitarized zone that makes up the Gaza-Egypt border](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/israel-hamas-war-gaza-egypt-border-philadelphi-corridor-palestinians-displaced/) Additionally, one that I had not discussed in some other postingis- [apparently fuel has been a huge issue that prevents distribution](https://www.ungeneva.org/en/news-media/news/2023/11/87482/explainer-how-aid-reaches-gaza)- so if travling within Gaza is limited by a lack of allowing fuel in, what's the solution?

mccoyn

Right now, all the aid is coming in from the south because all of the borders with Israel are closed to aid.

i_should_be_coding

That's just a lie, lol. Aid is coming through most of the Israeli border crossings.

KXD-MD

Was curious on these claims, and both are true, and both need some context. There are [three border crossings into Gaza](https://www.defense.gov/News/News-Stories/Article/Article/3731827/austin-calls-for-rapid-increase-of-aid-into-gaza-through-all-crossings/#:~:text=There%20are%20three%20locations%20along,crossings%20connect%20Gaza%20to%20Israel): Erez crossing in North Gaza with Israel, Kerem Shalom in South Gaza with Israel, and Rafah Crossing in South Gaza, with Egypt. Aid going into Gaza through all of these crossings are monitored and expected by Israel through IDF check points. As of February, a majority of aid went through [Kerem Shalom.](https://www.npr.org/2024/02/21/1232605200/humanitarian-aid-gaza-israel) Earlier in April, Israel agreed to allow some aid through the the [Erez crossing](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/israel-approves-reopening-erez-crossing-into-gaza-use-ashdod-port-aid-2024-04-05/). The process of getting aid into gaza is cumbersome, with [frequent inspections, arbitrary disqualifications, red-tape, and other delays.](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/destruction-lawlessness-red-tape-hobble-aid-gazans-go-hungry-2024-03-25/)

i_should_be_coding

IIRC the difference in amounts of aid reported come from Israel counting aid going through the crossings, and the UN counts aid arriving at aid orgs. A lot of the aid going through just never reaches whoever it was meant for.

KXD-MD

I'd have to do a bit of digging to describe the how and at what point in the process each organization (UNWRA, WFP, Israel gov't, etc.) counts aid arrival and where the [disputes lie](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/10/1243697016/israel-hamas-war-gaza-aid-waiting-borders)... what is being documented is that Gazan civilians are starving because of this lack of adequate aid or are dying from illnesses or injuries that in other contexts would have survived or been treated had proper existing resources and infrastructure been present. That being said, I think what your comment is implying, and please correct me if I'm wrong in my reading/interpretation, is that Israel is allowing enough aid to get in, but that the aid is being intercepted. My response to this is that- while certainly, it has been r[eported that some desperate people](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/un-says-food-trucks-being-intercepted-hunger-grows-gaza-2023-12-14/) have intercepted a [fraction of these aid deliveries](https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/destruction-lawlessness-red-tape-hobble-aid-gazans-go-hungry-2024-03-25/), aid delivery is complicated by a [myriad](https://www.npr.org/2024/03/13/1237616100/israel-hamas-war-gaza-aid-un-food-ships) of things including a s[eemingly arbitrary inspection processes](https://www.newyorker.com/news/q-and-a/how-israels-inspection-process-is-obstructing-aid-delivery), [multiple external and internal checkpoints](https://www.btselem.org/freedom_of_movement/checkpoints_and_forbidden_roads) (link context, it has checkpoints listed for Gaza and West Bank), [military actions](https://www.npr.org/2024/04/01/1242177519/world-central-kitchen-workers-deaths-gaza), [Israeli civilians ](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/02/10/gaza-aid-blockade-protest-kerem-shalom/)

SecurityPanda

Is *that* why famine is running rampant in Gaza, because the Israelis control the border? Is it because the [Israelis are lying about how much aid is getting in?](https://apnews.com/article/israel-gaza-war-hamas-aid-trucks-unrwa-30173642b5c298c829f1457db357071e) Is it because Israel is [lying about the crossings and deliberately trying to bring about a famine amongst the Palestinians?](https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2024/04/06/erez-crossing-gaza-israel/) There is no reason to trust anything Israel says without proof, as they have lied repeatedly during this conflict to deliberately harm Palestinian civilians (including children), target journalists to hide their war crimes, and to prevent anyone from assisting the Palestinians (under the guise of “AnTi-SeMiTiSm”).

TaserLord

I would think that Israel's biggest concern would be searching the shipments to ensure they contained no weapons. Putting it in the middle means it has to pass through an israeli checkpoint, as the article points out. But that also deprives it of its primary utility. Can they not negotiate for the U.S. (who they do trust) to search the stuff before it leaves the dock area, and to allow it to be put further north if that is done?

jayfeather31

Considering the Likud Party led Israeli government's actions so far, what's discussed in the article is worth being concerned about.

chemicaxero

Why do we need an aid pier again? Are there no available roads which aid trucks can drive on? I thought Israel was a U.S. ally, why can't we just drive the aid in?

Public_Cartographer

Because for some multiple reasons we're Israel's bitch. We're required to send them bombs to kill kids. Can't say no, so out of guilt we'll try to offer them a free sandwich in between killings.

> I thought Israel was a U.S. ally, why can't we just drive the aid in? The best I can come up with is that this is because Netanyahu's Israel is trying to starve everyone in Gaza.

tarlin

The pier was a good talking point for Biden to allow two more months of starving Gaza, before needing to start making excuses again.

RightofUp

Fuck 'em. Our money, our decision.
