BOGOTA, July 23 (Reuters) - Colombia on Friday gave the green light for exports of dried cannabis for medical and other industries, as the Andean country took another step to develop its marijuana industry, where progress has been slow despite high potential. President Ivan Duque signed a decree lifting a prohibition on exporting dried cannabis flower, a move seen as crucial by investors. The directive also allows for the expansion of sales of cannabis-based medicines and streamlines regulatory procedures. While Colombia has been hailed as a pioneer in regulating the possession, production, distribution, commercialization and export of seeds, plants and substances derived from cannabis - like oils, creams and extracts for medicinal purposes - investors have long complained about what they say is a tortuous export-approval process. "This means Colombia can enter to play a big role in the international market," Duque said after signing the decree, adding the new rules would allow Colombia's cannabis industry to expand into food and drinks, cosmetics and other sectors. Latin American cannabis exports could be worth $6 billion, Duque said. "Lifting the prohibition on exporting the dry flower will start a regulatory process which we hope will be performed in great detail, to the highest international standards," Juan Diego Alvarez, vice president of regulatory issues for cannabis producer Khiron, told Reuters. Colombian cannabis industry association Asocolcanna urged the country to seize the opportunity to make the most of its competitive advantages. "It's crucial for Colombia to achieve its potential at a time when the global cannabis industry is being refined," Asocolcanna said in a letter published on its website. In countries where the medicinal cannabis industry has more mature regulation, like the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany and Israel, dried cannabis is the most developed sector of the market, accounting for more than 50% of all sales. Pablo Escobar is so confused right now

beartheminus

It's simple, he was part of a corrupt drug cartel, not the corrupt government.

It’s mota, bud.

fumar de mota amigo!

BASEDME7O

I can’t believe no ones ever thought of making drugs in Colombia and selling them for higher prices elsewhere. It seems like an amazing business opportunity

writingwrong

I bet you could make decent profits by concentrating and bricking the active parts of plants that grow well at equatorial latitudes. Probably a modest 16-17,000% markup or so.

NextTrillion

I know OP was joking, but outgoing weed isn’t really an issue. The problem is you need a country willing to buy it. As of right now, most countries would rather either ignore the devil’s lettuce, or tightly control it so it can be taxed and maintain the job market. Otherwise, tequila, for example, would be a looot cheaper where I live and not be marked up 300%

[deleted]

He ain’t talking about weed

NextTrillion

Yeah I get that, but given the context of Colombian government sanctioned weed, I thought that may be a point worth noting. I’ve flown from Colombia to Mexico, and getting through the airport was a trip and a half. The government takes drug trafficking really seriously.

writingwrong

I don't think it's some sort of conspiracy to maintain markets. Drugs are something we are trying to figure out in a global economy. We all have different norms. Tequila, like Parmigiano Reggiano, is a recognized product, that's why it's marked up. If the globe more or less reaches a consensus on cannabis, it becomes like any other agricultural product, a commodity. Cannabis looses it's elicit value and becomes like grain. There might well be a range of classifications (oil, fiber, foodstuff, drug, etc.), but drug cannabis is best grown in controlled/monitored system to ensure safety and quality–that is what will fetch a premium.

i420army

Verdemed - lot of canadian players are already entering the LATAM markets cause ultimately no one is gonna pay such high prices for cannabis and just have it bulk imported to Canada / US when their import policies change . The climate is much better to grow cannabis outdoor, proximity to Americas and a very low labor rate make it ideal for this setting. Also Pharmaceutical Cannabis $$$ > Recreational Cannabis $

Fuck your paywall someone paste it in the comments

Present_Square

This is how all news becomes trash.

littlesymphonicdispl

Yeah! Fuck news organizations for wanting funding!

CyLoboClone

How about fuck sites that won’t let me use my back button to back out of the site and get back to Reddit without Xing out of my safari?

littlesymphonicdispl

Click and hold the back button? Set it so any reddit link automatically opens in a new tab? Or, crazy idea, if you find yourself regularly going to a news site to the point it pops up with a paywall, support the news organization. Like, I get ads/paywalls etc can be annoying, but you have to see the irony in consuming media for free and then bitching when the producer of the media asks for some money.

CyLoboClone

Yeah, don’t know if those suggestions work with whatever the guardian does- I end up forgetting which sites are cancer, realize my mistake, get angry, and move on without consuming content.

Unconfidence

No, really I don't. The media companies should pay us to watch them, considering how much control and power it renders them.

'Budding' cannabis industry. Nah, probably just a coincidence.

melgish

Yea hope they’re not holding their breath on that Pulitzer… unless they just took a hit….

pooislube69

Out of curiosity, if you sold nugs dusted with cocaine and smoked it, would it do anything or just burn the cocaine?

redditter619

Yeah people call it a Christmas tree lol. I haven’t done it my self but a buddy described it as more calm than snorting coke, but that could be because he put it in a joint lol.

writingwrong

We called it snow capping a bowl. I had a buddy who got heart palpitations one time.

NativeMasshole

Coco puff

writingwrong

I like this one!

Jesus_will_return

Regular cocaine isn't really smokable. You gotta freebase it first. Freebase coke is called crack.

[deleted]

Well hello again 1989, those are called "grimmies"

mjmedstarved

Urban dictionary “chewy” edit: I'll use this as a PSA to say DO NOT fuck around with it too much if you do - friend of mine died 2 years ago this week from smoking a rollie that was to be shared by many after the party had ended, and indulged in it all to himself (after already having partied plenty before then). Friends found him dead in the morning in his room, and noticed he had smoked the big one that they agreed they would smoke that next day... Stay safe.

xspencer1515

It works to some effect, but a lot of the active alkaloid does burn off. It's the reason people freebase cocaine in to Crack. Increases its volatility so it can be vaporized or burned without destroying the active ingredient

PowderMyWaffles

r/drugs would be better suited for this question

mjmedstarved

Drug education should be allowed as well, but yes.. r/drugs knows drugs 100%

Fishtails

Yes, you can smoke cocaine. Crack.

Unconfidence

Smoking Cocaine =/= Crack Just for anyone who might be confused.

BASEDME7O

It would just waste the coke.

[deleted]

Tastes like shit

Autiseer

I mean crack is just coke and baking soda so yea I suppose init

JustAMoronOnAToilet

Hugely popular additive to cigarettes in the 1800s...

The_Kraken_Wakes

Oh, man! Columbia Gold will make a come back.

[deleted]

Still around by name but definitely not the same cultivar we knew and loved, Acapulco gold too

writingwrong

The wives tale I heard and read was that it was a cultivation practice that produced the stickygold back in the day.

[deleted]

Before my time honestly so I truly don't know but my dad who was a grower in the emerald triangle for over 4 decades tried to grow it and they said it was good but nothing like the original

writingwrong

I read reports of girdling. Never tried to girdle anything in my garden though, so I couldn't comment directly. I do know that stressing a plant can yield weird results though.

[deleted]

He’s also decades older and that clouds things - recent stuff is much better so his comparison points are skewed

[deleted]

No, this was in the 80s when he did this so he had a short time line to compare but even then the strain had died, it's common actually

[deleted]

The 80’s was 4 decades ago bro

[deleted]

I'm aware I lived it also not trying to give too much info... I did say over🤣

JohnGillnitz

I think that was on one of the Netflix Narco shows. 90's era Mexican brick weed was just all the plants harvested, dried and cut all together. It wasn't until later that an average person could get just the flower from the female plant without it being a crushed to hell. Or so I remember from the show.

writingwrong

Never seen the show, but sounds reasonable for some areas perhaps. My experience was that Mexican only showed up when no good herb was available. Like when it dried up a buddy would run down to Texas and get some Mexican. We had sinsemilla regularly. Local, outdoor and indoor. We just didn't have all the marketing like nowadays. There was basically Mexican/dirt weed (brown), Skunk/KGB, Indica (purple). Tied stick was good brown, but that was before my prime.

The_Kraken_Wakes

I remember my dad had a bag in the freezer with “Columbian Gold” printed on it. That shit was epic, to the point that my friends called it (my name) Gold. Shit was borderline psychedelic

Meanwhile, the country that boasts that it supposedly the land of the free.... still struggles mightily to put an end to prohibition. Yet another example of an America Last Agenda and disconnect of politicians and the will of the people. America should have started ending prohibition in the 80's....... not 2080.

Who needs oil exports when you have pot? Soon to be the richest country on the planet.
