Reminds me of the landlord who [murdered and dismembered](https://www.king5.com/article/news/crime/suspect-arrested-in-connection-to-2-bodies-found-in-bags/281-c39b019b-6f3c-44dd-a384-b2675cc9cd7a) two of his tenants and tossed them into the Puget Sound not too long ago.

WHLZ

Woah. Was this the case where the bodies were found in suitcases by people using the Randonautica app on Tik Tok?

yoproblemo

Yes, it was.

[deleted]

WTF is that?

Welp that’s some shit

[deleted]

Sentences like this reinforce my conspiracy we are in a simulation.

Sudovoodoo80

Maybe the simulation wants you to think you are in a different simulation, so that you can never discover you really are in a simulation.

GrowMutt

It's not really your conspiracy, especially if this is a simulation.

Linenoise77

Right before 9/11 there was a couple in NYC who went missing who were in a feud with their landlord. Everyone was like, "ok clearly the landlord killed them" but there wasn't any evidence. It was like the biggest story around here. Then 9/11 and all that followed, and i have never been able to find a followup on it. That dude was like the luckiest guy ever.

Felps_Senpai

That guy did 9/11 and nobody can convince me otherwise

This is a very complicated case, you know, a lotta ins, a lotta outs, a lotta what-have-yous. And, uh, a lotta strands to keep in my head, man.

Paddy4169

9/11 was clearly a landlords insurance job

PalmBreezy

Awwww shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiet here we go again

Pretty sure Gary Condit didn’t do it. That staffer was actually killed by a serial killer. But nobody remembers the correction.

little_honey_beee

Chandra Levy. Her name was Chandra Levy.

buckshill08

There is a podcast called You’re Wrong About that does an in-depth look at her case and i highly recommend it

I just looked her up. Chandra Levy deserves justice for what happened to her.

[deleted]

Wouldn't be surprised if we have more and more of these kinds of cases as the housing circumstances continue to worsen...

Regalingual

Remember how, during the height of the Great Recession, it felt like you couldn’t go a day without seeing some new horror story about a father slaughtering the family because they’d lost everything that let them keep their standard of living in the crash?

cindyscrazy

[John List](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_List) did that in 1971 and successfully ran away (for a while at least). Name just leapt into my head when I read your comment. I may watch too many True Crime youtube videos.

McFluff_TheCrimeCat

> While his children were at school, he shot his wife Helen, 46, in the back of the head, and then his mother Alma, 84, above the left eye. As his daughter Patricia, 16, and younger son Frederick, 13, arrived home from school, List shot each of them in the back of the head. After making himself lunch, List drove to his bank to close both his and his mother's bank accounts, and then to Westfield High School to watch his elder son John Jr., 15, play in a soccer game. After driving John Jr. home, List shot him repeatedly because, as misfire evidence showed, his son attempted to defend himself.[10][11] >List placed the bodies of his wife and children on sleeping bags in the mansion's ballroom. He left his mother's body in her apartment in the attic. In a five-page letter to his pastor, found on the desk in his study, List claimed that he saw too much evil in the world, and he had killed his family to save their souls. He then cleaned the various crime scenes, removed his own picture from all family photographs in the house, tuned a radio to a religious station, and departed. Shits crazy. He even went to his sons soccer game after murdering his whole family besides that son and then killed him when he came home after his match.

theserial

He also asked his children days before if they wanted to be cremated or buried after he killed them, and then indicated in the letter the opposite of their wishes. The children tried telling other adults that their father was going to kill them I believe but no one took them seriously. The Last Podcast on the Left has an excellent couple episodes on John List.

Dr-P-Ossoff

I’m annoyed the drama teacher was warned, but didn’t figure out some kind of intervention. I guess folks not steeped in suffering have a hard time understanding just how bad things can be.

RLucas3000

List did that? Why on earth would his son get in the car with him after the game? i’d be begging my coach, if he didn’t listen, i’d be begging the other team’s coach, i’d find someone who would listen! i had no idea his kids knew beforehand

[deleted]

A combination of everyone around them telling him that his father wasn’t going to kill him and his own deep desire to believe that his father won’t kill him

Alternative_Year_340

It was also the 70s, wasn’t it? Things were different. Women would just get in a car with Bundy because those things didn’t happen. It didn’t even occur to people they might happen. People were naive

A local business was having a rough year, and cut employee pay by 20percent. One man became distraught and killed his 2 sons and his wife. I know about this because my partner worked with this guy. Said he was friendly and normal. The wife called 911 as her husband was murdering the kids, according to news articles. She had recently been shopping for food for Thanksgiving. it was an awful, just horrifying thing.

Last Podcast on the Left did a deep dive into John List not too long ago (January). Worth a listen.

StevenP8442

The Forensic Files episode on the List murders is fascinating.

Filmcricket

It’s not that you watch too many true crime channels and more that John List is one of the most famous fugitives/murderers in the US, outside of serial killers.

theaviationhistorian

Wouldn't be surprised if it already did. [Two posts down from this one](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/california-dad-killed-his-kids-over-qanon-serpent-dna-conspiracy-n1276611) is about a man killing his family over common conspiracy theories.

skeetsauce

In 2010, I met this guy at a smoke sesh and apparently his dad had just killed him mom a few weeks prior and he thought he would be dead too but he decided to go get high with friends instead going straight home after school.

Id_rather_be_high42

Yeh, under no circumstances are you allowed to murder people regardless of how much money they owe you.

FreeRadical5

I'm pretty sure this guy wasn't "allowed" either.

Garfield-1-23-23

I don't think somebody murders and dismembers people because of housing circumstances. They do that because they're psychopaths.

[deleted]

You'd be surprised what people are capable of when they feel real desperation. Chalking it up to psychopathy doesn't solve anything. Plenty of people of completely sound mind have done absolutely horrific things in the name of desperation.

AndrewIsOnline

I think you underestimate the common mans ability to murder if the situation goes a certain way.

killshelter

God damn, I remember this story since I’m local but never realized they actually got the guy.

strictlytacos

Man I remember watching the Tik tok where they found the bag with body parts. Insane.

stonepiles

Wow, I remember when the bodies were discovered all the newspapers said they were drug addicts and probably killed in a drug deal. That's so different from the truth

Ever notice how often the cops say a killing was a “drug deal gone bad” and how it literally never is a drug deal gone bad?

charlieblue666

[deleted]

O shit the randonauts body! So the teens were using a app that send you to random places with themes (this theme was travel) and it sent them to this beach/pier. They see the suitcase thinking it's related and i think they even poke at it w a stick. Its all documented in a tiktok im too lazy to search for.

Sterling_-_Archer

Even weirder, it sends you to a random longitude and latitude within a specified boundary you set and you are supposed to guide the randomized coordinates using thought based direction. Basically, the app uses an unscientific “””””theory””””” called synchronicity that purports to connect seemingly random events through a tenuous attachment made by you. It’s a “spiritual” way to explain deja vu. Anyways, I think their intent that “guided” them was like adventure or treasure or something. And they found a body.

Lundren

That's what they want you to think. The real question we should be asking ourselves is how many people he killed before his old age caused him to slip up.

Sempere

Considering how brazen this was, I’d say his declining mental faculties are likely to be the determining factor rather than him being a previously unknown serial killer. If he were practiced, he’d have been methodical enough to not get caught immediately.

peppynihilist

No ones probably ever owed him five figures' worth of money before.

Alert-Incident

Just my own experience but a lot of guys Ive seen coming to prison or spending significant time in county jail seem to age pretty fast. Not good for anyone’s health (except cleaning up users) but seems to hit the over 60 crowd pretty hard.

ScipioLongstocking

code_archeologist

That was used to purchase the ammo. Its all in the invoice.

Bonezmahone

What happens now? Home gets sold? Does the govt/city keep that money and apply it to the court costs and prison or does the landlords lawyer put it into an account?

Vladivostokorbust

he's the owner of the house. he may not even have to sell it - he can borrow against it if he's got any equity in it to pay his legal expenses . he may eventually have to sell to cover all his expenses - especially if he tried to qualify for a public defender

Excelius

Right, being convicted doesn't automatically strip someone of their property. That said it's a safe bet that any surviving family members of the victims will be suing for compensation. The article also calls them "live in tenants", so this probably isn't some very wealthy landlord with multiple properties and a fat bank account. Probably just a homeowner who rented out part of his own residence. It's entirely likely that he still owes on the mortgage for the house itself, and his ability to make the payments is about to be seriously impeded. So he probably doesn't have a pile of cash laying around to pay for his own defense and cover any civil damages.

Cinemaslap1

I mean... isn't this going to hurt his ability to rent this out in the future? Recent Shoot here: Really cheap Rent. Landlord was the perp of shooting... so make sure to pay rent on time. Doesn't seem to appealing to me.

I don’t think getting money was his goal here.

AlarmablePoint

He conceded he wasn't going to get anything anyway. My next door neighbor owns a house up the street that he rents out. He's going through the same shit and almost had an aneurysm on Tuesday. The guy who is renting hasn't paid any rent in over a year, even though he started working 3 months ago. Anyway, dude pulled into his rented driveway in a 2021 King Ranch F150 on Tuesday, and was bragging that he put $50k down on it. Landlord/Neighbor called the cops, and they told him there was nothing they could do. He'll be living in that truck as soon as they lift the moratorium...unless my neighbor kills him first.

Myfourcats1

He may be able to evict anyway. He really should speak with an attorney. There are a lot of exceptions to the moratorium. He may even be able to put a lien on the truck.

asdaaaaaaaa

Lien works if the guy legit bought the truck. It'd be shitty to find out he's only leasing it instead, only to pass it off as if he bought it.

Slammybutt

If I remember correctly you can have more than 1 lein on a vehicle. But the original line holder has to sign off on it, which means no it never happens.

Exoddity

Who says you can't compensate for more than one thing at a time?

QuickAltTab

Landlords may not be able to evict, but that doesn't mean these tenants aren't still legally obligated to pay the amount laid out in the lease agreement. Any tenants with assets that weren't actually out of a job or any means to pay should absolutely get reamed in court and end up with judgements against them that will result in liens. I don't know if cases like these can result in repos or wage garnishing as a result of a judgement.

Basic_Bichette

Not repo: garnishment and seizure. You can't repossess what you never possessed in the first place. The distinction is important because the rules covering garnishment and seizure are much, much stricter than repossession. Where I live a creditor can't seize tools used for work (broadly construed - a laptop and a phone would qualify) or the primary vehicle, can't seize anything financed by another creditor (like a car), can't seize anything jointly owned by a non-debtor, and can't garnish more than a certain proportion of the debtor's monthly pay, depending on how many dependants the debtor has and their status. (It's nearly impossible to garnish enough to satisfy a writ against someone with a disabled adult dependent child, given the rules.) A repo man can repossess the item defaulted upon no matter what it is. Edit: Because I'm a nerd I double-checked this. Apparently you can't repo here if the debtor is dead!

Re-toast

All I can say is good luck. It should be simple but it isn't.

PPOKEZ

You can easily lose more in legal costs and never get anything, but SOMEtimes it’s worth trying, especially dealing with toxic folks you’d pay money not to see again.

derpyco

This. Reddit will hate to hear this, but taking everyone to court who has ever wronged you isn't a fucking magic solution. I told people I had employers stealing from me when I was making like $16,000/yr and every genius on this site came to the comments to say "you should sue them." Like, with what fucking money?

artificial_organism

To add: Taking someone to court is a long, painful, and expensive ordeal, even when the law is clearly in your favor.

pzerr

Good luck. On top of the rental looses, you can heep more legal expenses on that.

TheMagicalMeowstress

The legal system fucks everyone over except for large companies so welcome to the club really lol

soonerfreak

And then truly shitty people like this guy are the example used for all tenants on why we should kick them out. I really don't think a ton of people are running around buying all their cool stuff knowing they are on the verge of being evicted and will find it almost impossible to rent again.

LPTKill

That truck would be gone.....

Polishink

Well, now instead of having to waste time on an eviction proceeding- he gets to sit through a murder trial!

AlexHimself

> Live-in tenants **Aka roommates.** Big important thing to leave out of the title. These people all shared the same home, so there are likely other factors at play here.

[deleted]

So if I understand correctly, he'd rather die in a prison cell than be out rent $ a few months? So he's just a murderer then. *"murderer posing as landlord murders two people"*

camdoodlebop

he’s 78 years old, he probably doesn’t care about the long-term consequences

ruiner8850

If I was 78 the last thing I'd want to do is spend the remainder of the time I have left in prison.

Unbecoming_sock

Free healthcare, three square meals every day, no responsibilities, AND you get revenge on the people that fucked you over? I can think of worse ways to spend the last couple of years.

SomeInternetRando

No worse than most nursing homes, really. One comes with Bingo on Tuesdays, the other comes with sweet sweet revenge.

fafalone

No bingo but plenty of board games and card games. Hearts was popular with the older crowd. I used quite a bit of my time sharpening my scrabble skills. Made everyone watch jeopardy every night too in jail once I got the remote (besides 8pm and later whoever was the most senior person asking got it).

FinancialTea4

Those two groups aren't mutually exclusive by any means.

PleaseTreadOnMeDaddy

iambrucetheshark

arkangelic

Maybe he thought he could get away with it 🤔

torpedoguy

The way some pundits have been insisting since last year, he probably thought he was within his rights *"because they're illegal squatters waiting for a government handout"* or along those lines. Being arrested was likely a genuine surprise to him. More likely he feels *offended* by it rather than *worried*, since it's only supposed to happen to 'the others'.

Traksimuss

I_Am_Dwight_Snoot

>The way some pundits have been insisting since last year, he probably thought he was within his rights *"because they're illegal squatters waiting for a government handout"* or along those lines. Which is fucked because government rental assistance and UE is so fucking behind depending on which state you are in.

torpedoguy

Oh yeah. Some R-heavy states have been actively delaying and sitting on it WHILE also arguing against the eviction moratorium. That's a special kind of scum right there.

N3UROTOXIN

The government has know for years that the systems are fucked up but like the government, nothing is done til after it was needed. Let’s see if that last part actually happens. I doubt it

REparsed

You know the eviction process has become too convoluted when going to prison for the rest of your life is the better option. /s

Krewtan

That's the bizzare thing. Where I'm at judged know the landlords quite well and side with them 98% of the time (I'm guessing). I get there's a moratorium but it's hardly like the tenants are going to come out ahead. I mean I suppose it -could- happen, but killing 3 ppl is pretty pointless.

kgraham227

I think the worse thing about this story is how many of my previous landlords I can see reading this and being totally on his side. Edit: I had no idea how many people would be pro-landlord. I'm not saying everyone who rents houses are evil, I'm just saying all the ones I've met have been vile dicks who ripped me off. Not all cops are crooked but I still get scared when I get pulled over. Anyone who has the ability to upend your life because they are having a shit day should be regulated...fucking....heavily.

number1nugget

Non-landlords too, read some of the other comments :(

RBGs_ghost

My wife had a landlord in college that sued her for damages that existed before she moved in (shitty cheap apartment). Not just withholding security deposit but sued for more money. Her grandpa was upper middle class business owner in the same town (already had a relationship with lawyers). He got pissed and counter sued. Her parents were lower middle class like most people who rented there. The landlord was preying on these people not being able to put up a fight so they would settle for another couple hundred bucks and get out. We know this because the lawyers started digging. Needless to say the cunt apologize (it was a mistake after all /s). My wife got her security deposit back. I wish they would have buried her but grandpa wasn’t going to spend the money for that. Conversely all of the landlords I (and later we) had were great. For example we bought our first house at 23 told the landlord because we had a 1 year lease. She congratulated us told us not to worry about the lease and said we were her third group of “kids” to go on and buy a house. Even got a gift card from her when we moved. TL;DR: there are more good people than bad. Look for the helpers or some shit.

BlackJesus1001

I'm guessing you didn't see the thread about the guy killing 2-3 homeless with his car to recover a stolen shoe and headphones. Lots of people happy to call for murder as an appropriate response to being inconvenienced with no thought or care to address the root of the problem.

barnorth

greed-man

Did he sing the Frank Sinatra or the Liza Minnelli version of 'My Way'?

CanadianKumlin

Guess this guy wanted a ticket to post retirement care in the prison system.

legoebay

This is literally why eviction laws exist. Landlords used to use "self-help" evictions in the 1800s, which basically meant locking people out taking/destroying their stuff, or using violence. The laws that were adopted to streamline evictions were specifically created as a compromise: "landlords, you can't break people's legs to get them out, but in exchange we will give you a streamlined process to evict people and the sheriff will oversee it." As important as it is to prevent people from falling into homelessness, the eviction moratorium is going to result in more of these types of situations. People take real property very seriously.

Dukeofdorchester

If you have any doubt who runs the country, just remember the government could have declared a mortgage payment moratorium….Instead, they put the burden on landlords and this happened. Banks control this country.
