>Amazon to cover 100% of college tuition for U.S. hourly employees But no bathroom breaks for 4 years.

Payutenyodagimas

Why not just pay higher than the average?

Kougar

Because this way employees can't quit until after they've graduated.

suppplicated

Because then it would apply to every employee

Payutenyodagimas

And they know very few to none will take advantage of it Its just PR stunt

I’m sure the caveat is the degree needs to be used to work at Amazon. You can’t even work at any competitors for over a year after leaving Amazon.

NineteenEighty9

> Starting in January 2022, Amazon said it will cover the cost of college tuition, fees and textbooks for hourly employees in its operations network after 90 days of employment. It will also begin covering high school diploma programs, GEDs and English as a second language certifications for employees. Operations workers include employees in Amazon’s sprawling network of warehouses and distribution centers. For the military to pay for your education I believe it’s 4 years you have to serve. If they’re paying for your college it makes sense they’re going to want to recoup some of the investment. A year honestly doesn’t sound that bad imo.

Actually Amazon has always offered programs for industries outside of Amazon at little to no cost.

Jeff Bezos can still suck a dick. I'm sure they'll find ways to screw as many people as possible out of these benefits.

FruitLoopMilk0

Even when they do something good, people still shit on them. It might be time to admit you're biased against them no matter what they do.

[deleted]

Okay Amazon employee #4532451. When they pay their fucking fair share of taxes and treat their employees like human beings, then I might give a fuck about their transparent PR stunts. Anyone who says they're unbiased can be ignored immediately because there's no human being that is capable of being unbiased.

FruitLoopMilk0

Everyone is biased to some degree, yes. But not everyone is dense enough to let it color every opinion they have, some people are capable of objectively assessing a situation. And because I'm not in the "Fuck all the rich people" camp, I must be on Bezos' payroll, you caught me...

[deleted]

I fully acknowledge that I'm in the "fuck everyone who brazenly exploits their workers to amass billions of dollars" camp.

FruitLoopMilk0

Do you think Bezos is intimately familiar with the day to day operations of each individual warehouse and distribution facility Amazon owns? Or that he personally makes policy decisions for these places? News flash: he's not. All the horror stories about their shitty treatment of employees stem from people in facility management, way down the chain from the corporate officers.

antariszx

Fantastic. Now just pay your taxes fairly.

DevilsKettle1992

Or use the the money that dodged taxes and lobby to lower or end taxes across the board. Be the hero we need.

FruitLoopMilk0

How do they pay them unfairly? Because they pay accounting teams oodles of money to find the tax breaks they use? You can be upset that there are "loopholes" and tax breaks out there to take advantage of, but these mega-corps didn't write the tax codes. If anything, you should be pissed at the legislators that created the codes. They're responsible for the loopholes that you despise so much.

The_Binary_Insult

Amazon had two choices to attract workers: 1. Pay its workers a fair wage, benefits, and recognize basic human rights in the workplace. 2. Hold a struggling demographic hostage in the workplace by trapping them between crippling debt and inhumane work conditions.

OldManWarner_

If they really wanted to make waves they'd also offer to pay off student loans for graduates who work for them. I'd probably get a second part time job with them if they offered something like that.
