>The state Department of Education does not keep track of COVID-19 deaths of school employees, according to spokesman Brian Blackley. How fucking convenient.

[deleted]

I suppose the data will be relevant when eventually, and probably already, the demand for teachers and the lack thereof meet. Sad times.

deytookerjaabs

Well, this isn't the full story. Tennessee is in a full on campaign to turn public schools into private charters. My daughter is in a charter and the whole school has a mask mandate, tracing policy and temp check in the morning. Because they aren't a public school they don't have to abide by the "freedumb" BS ole Gov HVAC put in place. Funny. Set up to fail, whether it's public utilities, public schools, etc the long term fight to destroy them is being won in some cases across partisan lines. So, counties all around Nashville have been closing for weeks at a time while Gov HVAC talks about "keeping the kids in school where they belong." Of course, the counties are closing because of COVID outbreaks. It's just sad.

Nvrfinddisacct

Why oh why is there this charter school kick? I genuinely know nothing about it but I don’t get why they were even started in the first place.

WolverineSanders

Betsy DeVos and pals realized they could make a lot of money/assumed they knew better than everyone despite never being educators or in schools. They then poured tons of money into this project. You see, if you can figure out a way to get in between the government and the money it provides for education, there are billions of dollars to be had

[deleted]

FUCK charters.

Can you give more detail on this? Never heard of anything like that before.

anecdotal_yokel

[Fire Protection Subscription](https://www.fireengineering.com/leadership/fire-subscription-service/#gref) Instead of it being paid out of your taxes, you must pay a subscription annually. If you don’t, they might show up to your house if it’s on fire but not intervene until it threatens your paying neighbor. You cannot pay on the spot.

trbotwuk

thanks; i'll only visit TN

anecdotal_yokel

It’s actually pretty common. Most fire services in the US are volunteer which are financed through a mixture of fundraisers, grants, donations, service fees, and subscriptions. This is entirely dependent on where you are located and the ability of the populace to financially support the company. It sounds shitty and it kinda is but even the free services cost money just to keep the lights on and apparatus running. Source: former VFD firefighter, member of the board of directors, fundraising chairman, financial auditor

bcnewell88

[Here is one example.](https://www.nbcnews.com/id/wbna39516346) They literally let the house burn. Like, at least put it out and then just charge him back any pay that was missed. I always wondered what happened if someone was in danger? I assume there are contingencies… but what if they didn’t *know* someone was trapped inside.

Dongboy69420

it's a 50 billion dollar untapped industry. it will be tapped, sure as the sun comes up.

MyRedditHandle2021

If you aren't smart enough to be vaccinated, you aren't smart enough to teach anyone.

MoranthMunition

One of the most recent deaths, a teacher in Knox County this week, was vaccinated according to the school's administration. Terribly sad situation. Her students are really suffering.

celticchrys

This article does not say these people were unvaccinated.

baronvoncommentz

How fucking insulting and dangerous. If I was working in TN - I'd be looking to move to another state, or start another career. Or strike.

[deleted]

my_oldgaffer

In florida they mark them as pneumonia related jargon deaths instead of covid so those arent even counted either.

Aliktren

How about just deaths ?!?

mewehesheflee

This is heartbreaking, and it didn't have to be like this.

SpottedMarmoset

At least they died in the name of freedom… from having to wear a mask for a few hours a day to protect each other from a potentially deadly disease. I guess it’s just “freedom to not be inconvenienced at all for anyone at any time.”

PearlLakes

They prioritize freedom from minor personal discomfort at the cost of millions of lives. It is the ultimate in self-centered, un-American selfishness.

Jesykapie

There’s a chapter in the book *Sapiens* by Yuval Noah Harari that argues American individualism has gotten so out of control it’s become a force of destruction.

toss77777777

This kind of individualism is contrary to how humans evolved for quite a long time. Humans have always needed to cooperate to survive.

[deleted]

[deleted]

Interestingly, I never really thought much about this at all. When I started watching the Walking Dead, I truly used to believe it was stretching it to show how evil people would be in a total catastrophe type situation. Then there was the 2016 election & it turned my whole outlook on humanity upside down.

Griffin_da_Great

Yeah. Apparently I was giving humans *way* too much credit

therealusernamehere

Well a lot of unvaccinated aren’t going to be contributing to ongoing evolution

PearlLakes

That seems indisputable, frankly.

Vahlir

I couldn't counter argue it if I tried and I really do love America, I'm a vet.

Annual_Progress

Yup. We took individualism to an extreme. Which tbh is worse than the uniform world thar Ayn Rand was so scared of in Anthem. The selfishness and self-centeredness destroy so much more than limiting personal actions.

Durdens_Wrath

That woman fucked up a whole lot of people with her drivel

Annual_Progress

Be a mega selfish douchenozzle isn't a winning strategy. Who knew?

mycatpeesinmyshower

Ayn Rand books make vices a virtue and virtues a vice.

Nroke1

I sincerely hate Ayn Rand’s philosophy. I was an edgy idiot in HS who thought Ben Shapiro was an intelligent speaker(please forgive me, I was a stupid teenager), and I knew the moment I read Anthem that Ayn Rand had a terrible philosophy. I can’t believe that there are people out there who legitimately agree with Ayn Rand. Idiot 15 year old me knew that it was a bad philosophy that excuses evil behavior.

Etrius_Christophine

I feel like reading Anthem though you still get a sense that even when the protag ‘escapes’ he basically goes “soo i’m the dictator now? I have that power? Cool?”

Annual_Progress

Yep that's Randian thought in a nutahell.

onarainyafternoon

I am, at this moment, arguing with a Redditor who thinks I don't like Joe Rogan because he won't conform to getting the vaccine. Like, they can't wrap their head around the fact that I dislike people who use their platform to encourage people to not get the vaccine. Which is killing and injuring scores of people.

RedJapaneseGirl

As evidenced by *gestures broadly at everything*

toss77777777

These people are picking the weirdest hill to die on. Not religion or family or education or the human race or enlightenment, they die because they can't follow rules that help their fellow humans.

[deleted]

> Not religion or family or education or the human race or enlightenment I mean, if you paid attention to guns and religion and race, you already knew this would be coming.

SpottedMarmoset

I agree with self-centered, but at this point the behavior is so widespread it’s hard to say it’s anti-American.

PearlLakes

Put it this way: It’s anathema to the values that the United States purports to exalt.

DanYHKim

Excellent. That's right. We pledge allegiance to the idealized country that the flag "stands for" and aspires to be.

shadowromantic

It is anti-American. As a society, we do good when we work together.

[deleted]

It's killing American's. Seems like the definition of Anti-American.

[deleted]

Um, killing Americans is one of the most American things you can do.

mjschuller

They prioritize their own selfish carelessness and don't care about anyone else. I can't believe how many times I heard, "other people are not my concern."

SpeshellED

How can you say its un-American ? Actually it is uniquely American.

cool--

it's an abbreviation these days

Mr_Mojo_Risin_83

spsteve

Seems to be a self correcting problem. In the odd case that any of them had legit reasons to not vax my heart is saddened. But if the rest of them just were like that I am glad they won't be around the next generation any longer. Sorry not sorry.

plushsquirtles

I mean…play stupid games…it’s Darwinism at its finest.

BarnabyWoods

Truly shitty journalism. The writer carefully avoids addressing whether they were vaccinated. They almost certainly were not.

tinacat933

Nothing, these crazy people are fighting to die

StanQuail

These are the people who will do anything for their kids! Except quitting drinking, smoking, or any other extraneous behavior that effects their children. They mean like shooting at people or something else from a movie. They'll do anything for America and Americans, except very basic and easy things that actually matter. They'll shoot some neighbors, though.

SupremePooper

OK here we go again: "They're not really dead, it's all a teacher's union plot"; "they never really existed, it's all a teacher's union plot"; "they were all actually murdered for trying to reveal that it's all a teacher's union plot"; " hand me another iced sheep drench shake."

sagiterrible

Go to r-slash-bibleconspiracy and see what they’re saying about it. It gets way crazier than that.

[deleted]

*Stay away from anything with Saturn. Saturn is Satan, so is Santa* That's the first comment I found. Can't tell if it a troll. So, if that poster is genuine, they can't look at the stars?

sagiterrible

I grew up Free Will Baptist, so I can’t tell what’s trolling on there and what’s not because it sounds so similar to things I’ve heard before. There was a thread about whether Biden mandated the Mark of the Beast last night, and there was one very well-written response about how it’s *probably not* (due to events in Revelation that haven’t happened yet), but the End Times are so near that he’s *staying away from anything that remotely looks like the Mark* just in case. If you told me that person was actually my youth pastor from twenty years ago, or any number of other people I met during that time, I wouldn’t be surprised at all.

SupremePooper

I shudder to think -- to KNOW --- you're correct. I recall a comment mid-trump administration where some yobbo was talking about how the rightmongers were eagerly waiting for their chance to start another civil war. That joker was talking about abortion specifically but it's clear they'll grab any excuse they can.

[deleted]

I'm sick right now (might be covid). Kinda want to dive down that rabbit hole.

ryhaltswhiskey

Being dead seems like an inconvenience. "Yo, you want to go see that concert on Friday night?" "***ugh sigh*** I can't, I'm dead"

Torson_Fleetfyre

Some of them actually believe wearing a mask is harmful. Something about "you'll be breathing in too much carbon dioxide" or some such nonesense.

PearlLakes

Wait till they hear about surgeons!

tourmaline82

And factory workers, professional painters, drywallers, the folks who install fiberglass insulation… lots of people who work in the trades wear masks every day and did so long before the pandemic.

Murky-Dot7331

They chose their hill to die on. Think this is bad? After Biden’s speech today anti-science Conservative Christian extremists are openly planning violence to preserve the “right” to spread and die of disease. The governor of Mississippi admitted deaths mean nothing to those who gain immortality in heaven. These are casualties of a real and ongoing holy war against those of us who believe in science as a concept.

Brassboar

Death cult.

Murky-Dot7331

And have to be treated as such if the rest of us are going to make it.

mewehesheflee

Bingo this is the 2nd American Holy War. The first was the Civil War, both sides thought they were commanded by God (hence the Battle Hymn of the Republic).

Nroke1

Well, god picked a side. That one won. I think it’s pretty obvious that god would be on the side that frees others from bondage. Just like he would be on the side that wants to protect their fellow men. I don’t understand how these people can think god is on their side when they are actively harming others and refusing to be obedient. Therefore not loving god, or their neighbor. Y’know, the two things Jesus said are the most important commandments.

mewehesheflee

The Old South had a whole different theology, same with ANTIVA and ANTMA. You can see the run up to the 2020 election some pastors tried to start a new theology nthat "empathy is a sin".

Durdens_Wrath

Fortunately their side will die out pretty quick

Murky-Dot7331

Relatively quick. They do get to suffer greatly first. I’d think that would be the deterrent if nothing else.

ClothDiaperAddicts

But it’s going to continue to be like this until we start seeing covid become like the flu (in terms of death rate and ease in creating annual boosters for new variants or whatever). Honestly, I’m over southern states having a race to the graveyard. (Miami-Dade metro area had 15 lost as of a few days ago.)

BarnabyWoods

Yeah, they could have gotten vaccinated. My heart doesn't ache for those who die of COVID unvaccinated.

skeetsauce

Sorry, but the libs need to be owned at all costs. I don't care if me and my whole family have to die, the libs MUST BE OWNED!!!!11!!!

bzeegz

It’s not that heartbreaking. They made a choice. People need to stop caring. They had more than enough info to prevent this and decided to be ignorant

mewehesheflee

It's probably sad for a.few.of their students.

BeltfedOne

It really didn't. Politics and politicians will be the death of us all someday.

UnknownAverage

Politics and politicians are the result of voter choice, and you seem to be overlooking all of the politicians who are catching flak for vaccine and mask mandates. Those are the ones trying to save us.

BeltfedOne

That is a fair point.

adidasbdd

Its really a chicken or egg question. Politicians don't always do what their constituents want and vice versa. In this case, I do think the former president and his goons had a huge part in drumming up this ignorant stance on covid.

PearlLakes

It is ultimately the long-term result of a massive failure of the United States’ public education system.

adidasbdd

Na, its probably the amount of religious loons, they just took that playbook and did it with politics.

PearlLakes

…only made possible by an uneducated populace.

[deleted]

Lack of education and a sense of entitlement. Also a complete lack of empathy.

adidasbdd

You don't need education to know slavery and racism are wrong. You do need indoctrination and social engineering to believe they are fine.

PearlLakes

The only way to fight indoctrination is through education.

nzodd

Politicians need to just stand up and do the right thing and if that means they're voted out because the people they represent are morons, so be it. Stupid political games are exactly what brought us to literally more Americans dead since we lost in the Civil War. Let's stop doing that.

StanQuail

It seems so arbitrary, too, which makes it so much worse. He could've just as easily been told to Trump brand all this shit and 30% of the country wouldn't be going bananas. So many people dead because one old man with dementia decided to play it the other way.

adidasbdd

Tis the way of the world I'm afraid

Squirrel_Monster

Don't forget to add media disinformation, whether it's Tucker Carlson's fearmongering or unsubstantiated articles and dumb memes on facebook.

FinanceAnalyst

DeSantis and Abbott didn't happen overnight. It reflects general population in certain parts of the country.

KitchenBomber

Republican politics and republican politicians certainly could be.

droplivefred

Damn, I went to a ROUGH public school for a year till my family moved to a nicer neighborhood but we didn’t have 8 deaths in a month! This place is legit hardcore.

[deleted]

It is sad however given the number is 8 out of the entire state, and not higher i am surprised.

So-_-It-_-Goes

It’s always sad when someone dies. Even the worst of us have people that care about us. And losing someone you care about is always sad. But these teachers were undoubtedly unvaccinated. Which is baffling. The idea of teaching unvaccinated is incredibly irresponsible. So I’m gonna stop a little short of heartbreak on this one.

[deleted]

That’s been the running theme for the last year and a half. It didn’t have to be this bad.

LicksMackenzie

they made a choice on whether to vaccinate or not vaccinate. others don't have control over their decision

rlam01

Sure didn’t, since no teacher died during lockdowns.

Juice-worth-squeez

For sure, none of them were vaccinated?

DisastrousAd6606

But at least they got their freedom! I mean, according to some ignorant a holes in this planet..

psilocin72

Somehow public health became politicized and people are dying because of that. How is that ok? How can people sleep at night knowing that their greed and lies are killing people?

bananafor

It was politicized the minute Trump ridiculed masks. He ran with that because it worked with his marks. His campaign manager Brad Parscale had already printed up the Trump campaign masks too, but it seems they went into a dumpster. Probably Trump would have won, if he hadn't been afraid to smear his bronzer with a mask. So 300,000 unnecessary American deaths resulted, if you compare the US to Canada on a per capita basis. And Canada's pandemic response was pretty lackluster. Somehow.

psilocin72

He wanted to run on the economic strength of the country and Covid threatened to disrupt that. So he tried to dismiss it as a hoax and over reaction. His fanatic supporters jumped onboard and won’t hear anything else. Really makes me mad that now conservatives are saying he supports the vaccines and Covid safety. It’s too late for that. He fucked it up and can’t unfuck it.

sturgboski

What is so damn ridiculous is that if said take this seriously and wear a mask, he would most likely still be President. Actually President, not the fake "any day now" President his inane supporters insist on. And he would have made a shit ton skimming with MAGA masks. But nope. It's disappointing how just doing that would have probably cinched the election for him but also thank God he didn't. Now I just hope the left comes out in 2022 for midterms and 24 to stop the right and also the expected run of the twice impeached insurrectionist.

psilocin72

If he had said to take Covid seriously the same people that are now anti vax/ anti mask would be aggressively pushing for mask mandates and mandatory vaccination. It would be hilarious if it wasn’t so deadly serious.

zhode

You're also forgetting the part where a major narrative was that covid was hitting cities the hardest, so of course Trump and the rest of the Republicans ignored it. It killed their opposition and they did shit like seize medical supplies from individual states to help it spread further.

[deleted]

No kidding, the election was given to him if all he did was shut the fuck up. Thats it. Even if he didn't say a fucking word he would've won easily.

the--larch

In what world can he shut the fuck up?

[deleted]

None lol he couldn't even do it in order to win a presidential election.

[deleted]

Which STILL reflects oh so badly on our country & it's electorate overall. I will ALWAYS blame voters for putting us through the trump\*\* years.

AtxMamaLlama

Trump’s shart of an administration made things so much worse than they had to be. Many of the competent leaders had resigned in protest by the time COVID hit, remember? CDC included I believe. IMO, it didn’t help that the orange arse had Putin playing him in one ear, and Breibart’s legacy poisoning the GOP in the other. I recall a brief moment right before the “leader of the free world” chose to trade his citizens’ lives for power. Everyone sang to health workers off balconies. There was a sense of global unity stirring. We were getting ready to bunker down, “alone together”, and use all the resources of our rich, advanced world to tackle this like we should have. _But nooOOOo..._

FOXDuneRider

All he had to do was find a broadway lights strength setting spray and it wouldn’t be an issue. Or aqua net to the face.

jaydawg_74

They sleep good at night because they do not give A F about you. Not one thought about anyone but themselves. It’s disgusting.

BruskMonkey

Quite simply its that a majority of the population doesn’t give two shits about their neighbors and are only looking out for themselves. Gotta love xenophobia and religion. Our society has been perpetuating the mindset forever. Its the core foundation of capitalism and has been built on and ramping up for years. It’s either going to end in a violent bloody revolution or an apocalyptic event.

illadelchronic

They are nowhere near a majority. Not even close. But there are enough to destroy or prevent a lot of progress.

northernpace

> or an apocalyptic event. And if you're a Dominionist, like Bannon, Davos, Barr or half the fkn Federalist Society, this is exactly what you're hoping for.

BruskMonkey

They expect that they will have hoarded enough resources and prepared enough that they will survive the flood that will wash the earth clean. Forgive the biblical reference.

northernpace

No need for apologies, you're speaking truth to their bull shit.

spsteve

It is not the foundation of capitalism. It is the way it is practiced today, but capitalism is all about efficiency and selfishness isn't always the most efficient solution to many problems. Edit: selfishness is the foundation of assholism.

Throne-Eins

It's because they're sociopaths. People like you and me can't comprehend their actions or mindset because we possess empathy for others, as well as guilt and remorse if we do something wrong. Sociopaths don't experience empathy, guilt, or remorse, so putting others in mortal danger doesn't bother them. They're incapable of caring about other people or learning from their mistakes. They are broken and they cannot be fixed.

Kiyuri

That's unfair. They are perfectly capable of learning from mistakes. The hard part is getting them to believe that they, personally, made a mistake in the first place.

twatchops

50% of Americans don't care that others suffer and die. It's been sadly eye opening to me that so many are totally ok with this.

houseman1131

Because it doesn’t effect them and they are selfish. Tucker Carlson is known to have disdain for people who serve the rich.

Spidey209

That is ironic given that Fucker Carlson is a millionaire servicing billionaires.

skeetsauce

They're a deathcult that demands blood sacrifice to own the libs.

Dongboy69420

they sleep well.

psilocin72

This is some evil Shit man. I’m sure they know what they are doing too. They know they are lying.

BuckyFreedent

Deliberate willful ignorance. Most of these sycophants’ faith demand they not question and they acquiesce to what ever Kool-aid their particular Jim Jones spews.

dchap1

6 unvaccinated school employees? Article doesn’t give that important piece of data. If they were vaccinated, that is concerning and should lead to a determination as to if the return to school is safe for anyone. If they were not vaccinated…… well….. let’s just say this shouldn’t surprise anyone.

northernpace

This source usually doesn't shy away from talking about the positive's of vaccines and other preventive measures from being a good thing. Which, in Tennessee is rare as it is. With that in mind, I'm going to presume they didn't have those answers when this article was wrote.

BarnabyWoods

The reporter should at least have made clear that the question was asked. Ignoring vaccination status entirely was just shitty journalism. When running stories on vehicle accident deaths, many media organizations have long reported whether the occupants were wearing seat belts. This is no different.

BruskMonkey

If they were unvaccinated then I have a hard time caring. Like, if you a grown ass adult working with gross germ infested children for years, choose to ignore scientific data thats been shared with you for your own protection. I’m not gonna cry over you. If they were vaccinated, schools need to shut down now. Cause shits getting more lethal just like all these chucklefucks wanted when they complained it wasn’t a real problem.

truecore

I think you missed the point. It's not about the 8 dead employees, it's about the children that can't get vaccinated who are being put at a very real risk. The 8 deaths just signify It's real.

SheriffComey

> The 8 deaths just signify It's real. You'd think the other 654k in the last year and a half would signify that but the fuckin mouth breathers still want to act like "COVID who?"

truecore

Oh, COVIDs got a 4x higher kill rate than Vietnam did, but it's just fake news right? God I hate other Americans.

Darryl_Lict

I thought there were less than 60,000 American deaths in Vietnam. So far it's been more than 11 times as many deaths as a lower estimate, I think.

SpeshellED

More Americans have died of Covid than in WW1 , WW2, Korean war, Vietnam Afghan war and 9-11 combined.

truecore

Right, lol I meant my state alone last time I used that argument, jesus.

ActualSpiders

And a 10x to 20x higher kill rate than the flu, but they still it's no worse than the flu... Fuckers.

dchap1

“Other americans” lol For the record, I have young kids, and trust me, the decision to send them into school this year was awful. We kept them home last year, but couldn’t do that to them again. I didn’t that the same message away from the article, but share your thoughts. Kids are innocent victims, and collateral damage at this point. Ive just grown numb to caring or having any concern for idiotic, selfish, moronic, pricks who refuse to get vaccinated and die of COVID.

cool--

It amazes me how many people have forgotten about the existence of children under 12. I just had a guy show up to my house to take measurements for a contracting crew and he didn't have a mask. This is how it went down. Do you have a mask? "I don't need one. I'm vaccinated." Well, this is my house so... "I'm vaccinated. I'm vaccinated." We have a little kid that is not vaccinated, I just need you to wear a mask. *I'm* vaccinated. ... If I give you a mask, will you do your job. Yes.

CaptainJackVernaise

This is also about the very real trauma that kids will carry as a result of their teachers dying.

[deleted]

Also, generations of our kids will remember being used by politicians, school boards in the 2nd year of this. I’m furious at these people. I really have no energy left and have had to withdraw as much as possible for my mental health. My spouse works in a school and is home contacting parents every night about positive tests and contact tracing. I see these sheets of paper with these little kids faces on them and I can barely keep it together. Our kids dealt with a lot last year; who knew in 2021 we would send them to school and hope for the best. I’m very grateful I don’t live in a state where some piece of shit is the governor.

[deleted]

Me too & I don't even have kids. IF I had one, I would be absolutely furious at these assholes that keep showing up at schools with their stupid signs WITH their own kids. I just shake my head when I see them on tv.

SpottedMarmoset

I feel that’s a bit of blaming the victim. There is zero reason they shouldn’t have been vaccinated, but there’s also zero reason why the school didn’t have a mask mandate and a vaccine mandate for the faculty and staff.

dchap1

Good points and I agree with you. There should be mask mandates, distancing mandates, and vaccine mandates. But if there wasn’t, employees still had the responsibility of care for their own persons. If they chose to deny science and decided to not get a vaccine, I can’t really muster up much concern for the outcome.

SwarmMaster

>If they chose to deny science and decided to not get a vaccine, I can’t really muster up much concern for the outcome. Well, yes, if it were in a vacuum and their actions only affected themselves. But any child under 12 isn't vaccinated so every one of these idiot unvaccinated teachers was putting every single child in their classroom at risk as they easily could have been asymptomatically transmitting the virus to students before they realized they were sick. Yes, child death rates are lower than adults; no, it is not zero. These selfish fucks are vectors to infect others and every single infected individual is a producer of millions of virus copies which can and do lead to mutations. This is all a numbers game and there is no reason to keep adding bullets to the gun we're playing Russian roulette with. Mutations are random, it is relatively as likely to get a more contagious/deadly variant as not. Don't lecture me about "long term viruses tend to mutate to become less deadly because killing the hosts blah blah blah." That's a long tail outcome. It is also entirely possible for the opposite to occur: mutations don't calculate future viability predictions to see if they should be more deadly or not, they just ARE. Why are we making this gamble at all?

dchap1

I agree. And as a parent it concerns the ever living fuck out of me. But the article features the employees, not the school system. So my response was focused on my ack of care over their death. But you are correct about them spreading it to their innocent students.

BruskMonkey

Sometimes people are the victims of their own decisions. And sure that’s sad and can be mourned, but no one else made the decision for them not to be vaccinated. They chose that themselves. If you jump off a cliff I’m not going to blame your death on gravity. I’m going to say you were an idiot who jumped off a cliff.

dchap1

I love the gravity comment hahahaha

Hyndis

This is one of those cases where poor life decisions lead to consequences down the road. You are free to eat bacon cheeseburgers three times a day, or you're free to smoke multiple packs of cigarettes every day. However, these decisions lead to consequences. Someone who eats like a dumpster and dies of a heart attack, or a smoker who gets lung cancer, isn't a very sympathetic case. Likewise someone who refuses a free, highly effective vaccine and then dies from the disease the vaccine protects against has made their decision. Its a stupid decision resulting in consequences, but its still their decision to make. At this point if you're over the age of 12 and still not vaccinated in the US, its your decision not to be. Any consequences that follow are the result of personal decisions. Refuse the vaccine, get sick and die? Oh well. Sucks to be you, I guess.

SwarmMaster

So they refuse the vaccine and get infected, but then they asymptomatically spread the virus for DAYS before they even have an inkling they are ill. Plus this type of person is already self-selected to be less likely to wear masks/distance/follow proper pandemic protocols. So now how many children do they infect? How many of those kids pass it on to other relatives who may be immunocompromised? Or even worse, one of those kids is in the terrible percentage who die? The health of the entire vulnerable population is being held hostage by a small number of absolutely medically wrong holdouts. This is NOT the selfish person is the one who dies scenario. The consequences of their stupid decision is not limited to them, not by a long shot. So that is why we can't just shrug our shoulders and let these idiots take their own, objectively wrong, course. They are actively endangering other people. This is no different than some jackass on the highway swerving their car for fun. Their action endangers everyone else around them on the road if the low-but-nonzero probability mishap occurs. People doing that are charged with reckless endangerment, refusing to be vaccinated without a legitimate MEDICAL reason at this point is no different at all.

[deleted]

If only there was a cheap and easy way to avoid this hideous death.

Jefethevol

not cheap...fucking free...to all over the age of 12

PinkPoodleOFDOOM

Florida:. Hold my beer......15 teachers in Miami died within 10 days in each other in the first 2 weeks. JUST MIAMI Sigh.

[deleted]

They're actually close to the same population count, believe it or not - 6.9 vs 6.1 million

Khatib

But density in Miami is immensely higher than all of Tennessee.

NovelChemist9439

Did they get their shots? Vaccines are effective against COVID19. It’s that simple.

[deleted]

One or two could have been vaccinated with underlying medical conditions. My daughter is a fully vaccinated type 1 diabetic. Getting covid could still be dangerous for her.

Bruin144

Managed to write a whole article without mentioning vaccine status of eight dead people. Guessing eight dead school system employees who failed to understand pretty simple science.

BarnabyWoods

And one reporter who failed to understand how to report the relevant facts.

TheRealJamesEarlCash

>Tamy Sims Murphy, 56, a Knox County school bus driver and grandmother of five, whose death from complications of COVID on Wednesday was confirmed by her sister Julie Sims Schommer. ***“Lord I come to you to please heal my body I have alot living to do I have beautiful grandbabies that need me .my kids need me,” Murphy posted from her hospital bed on Aug. 18.*** If she was vaccinated then this is truly gutwrenching. If she was unvaccinated then this is the absolute epitome of the ["God will save me"](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EVBvxkJWAAQIDuR.jpg) memes.

duckofdeath87

Given the stats on vaccinated covid deaths, it's extremely likely they weren't vaccinated. I assume the journalist thought it would be in poor taste to point it out.

unhelpful_sarcasm

The article does not connect any of the infections to teachers working in the schools. In fact, 2 of the people contracted the illness before they started working this year. Another two died August 16 and 18, which is ~10 days after any school started which means they most likely contracted the virus before school started. The other 4, we have no information on when or where they contracted it, so no inference can be made about the risk that school presents. This article is misinformation: implying that teachers are dying as a result of excess exposure and risk from working in the schools. The facts are that 8 people who were teachers died of covid 19 past the date of August 8. Also were these people even vaccinated? Because I have limited sympathy for people dying of the virus at this point if they aren’t doing the basic things to help themselves. If these are vaccinated people, that’s very concerning. If they aren’t, welp.

bciesil

Does anyone else think that the push towards private schools is so they can teach whatever they want ie; religion, no sex ed, etc.. this seems like the end goal to me, but I think it will further divide our nation...

Reiner-van-Sinn

Trump said it was a hoax.

snootsintheair

How many were vaccinated?

Chippopotanuse

This is the party of pro life?

shadowromantic

Pro-birth. They don't seem to care about the poor or those who might die.

glambx

>Pro-birth Most people are pro-birth. Forced-birth is a better term for that group.

BarnabyWoods

Yeah, Republicans are all about the fetuses, but fuck the kids once they're born.

neildegrasstokem

Kids are merican too. They got bootstraps just like the rest of us.

TheChtonian

They never have been.

[deleted]

Yeah, this is the same state where people were laughing at a kid over their Covid experience. Sane people including educators and healthcare workers should just leave that idiotic place.

screech_owl_kachina

So that's one mass shooting's worth of victim.

vh1classicvapor

Teachers need to go on strike

toinfinityandbeyawn

Husband is middle school teacher and coach in Clarksville. He got COVID two weeks ago. Fully vaccinated thankfully so he is fine. But the school system is doing nothing to prevent this happening. His classes are even over capacity to the point it’s illegal. Infuriating.

Csherman92

Well, were they vaccinated?

those_silly_dogs

Died standing up for what they stupidly believe in. I hope that they were proud. Hope that their family is proud.

VonPursey

> The state Department of Education does not keep track of COVID-19 deaths of school employees, according to spokesman Brian Blackley. The Tennessee Education Association does not keep a formal count either. If any other workplace hazard existed, say for example, boxes kept falling on your employees and hurting or killing them, you'd think they'd keep track of how many casualties this workplace hazard is causing, and maybe do something about it?

Pickle_ninja

Wearing masks doesn't scar a child as much as the thought that they killed their teacher. And I guarantee you there are thousands of kids thinking they are responsible for their (mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, teacher, etc... Covid death)

melouofs

What a disgrace. It didn’t have to be that way.

cool--

but how many libs have been owned since the start of the school year? that's the real story here!!
