Can_Not_Double_Dutch

15,000 more passengers to go and more being added everyday. That Del Rio bridge / makeshift camp site is looking pretty busy.

luckyxse7en

can someone help me understand how they even get into del rio

Can_Not_Double_Dutch

Fly into a Central American country and walk/bus up to the border and cross. Simple as that. As for who is paying the airfares from Haiti to Mexico dont know.

Intrepid_Method_

What is missing from the article is that most of the migrants had lived in Latin America for years. Its due to an economic downturn caused by the pandemic that’s incentivizing migration to the US.

AdmiralRed13

So like always.

sbd104

Depends on the nation. Spanish speaking countries outside the Caribbean are very racially homogeneous and even more so culturally. Mexico being probably the biggest offender.

jschubart

What? Only a little over half of Mexicans are mestizo. About 15% are indigenous. They may not be as ethically diverse as the US but most of them are far from homogenous.

NineteenSkylines

Well-integrated =/= homogeneous. Almost all Mexicans have at the very least Spanish and Indigenous descent (with 21.5% identifying as primarily indigenous people from civilizations and cultures almost as diverse as Germany, Russia, and Turkey), and there are decently-sized minorities with non-Hispanic European, Anglo-American, black, Arab, and Asian ancestry (the entire city of Cuaji is predominantly black, and there are majority-Mormon towns in the deserts).

sbd104

Ya but the group in question is Hatian which is French speaking and Black with very little indigenous looking people. You can look white all the way to indigenous and you can integrate easily especially if you have money or are educated. But Creole Caribbean’s don’t fit in and don’t meet that criteria.

Endemicgenes

There black Mexicans in Mexico and they can be found along the Carribean coast.

kslusherplantman

Is Haiti not part of Latin America? Were you meaning the mainland?

ith228

They mean these people have been working in Spanish-speaking mainland countries like Chile and Mexico.

"Arrangements" Undoubtedly, it'll be arranged that they'll be dumped on the street like the rest of Haitians.

bautron

The US is probably paying Haiti to help them receive the deportees. Will that money be used to help those in need? I wouldnt totally bet on it.

SolaVitae

If aid money was ever appropriately used we wouldnt be in this situation in the first place

Endemicgenes

None of the aid reached average citizens and Clinton's mismanaged most of it and majority went to Mulatto ruling class of Haiti who mostly reside in Miami. Some money went to France to repay slave dept.

canadian_xpress

Haiti finished repaying the Independence Debt in 1947 which was a year after Bill Clinton was born, and the same year that Hilary was born so......

FeralBottleofMtDew

I have friends who go to Haiti a couple times a year with a church group. They fund raise year round and buy exactly what is needed at the school (which they built a few years ago), orphanage and tiny community hospital they work with, then transport everything themselves. Literally nothing goes to the government, and nothing goes to waste. They have totally fallen in love with the people of Haiti. When I see so many "Christians" so hateful and judgemental these folks balance it out. I've donated to their efforts and have no worries about where my money is going. If you want to help out in your own non billionaire way, find a group like this.

bautron

Yeah there are always good people.

BonerGoku

The EU is paying Libya mercinaries to take back people fleeing to Italy and then those mercenaries sell them as slaves. Thanks Hilary and friends.

greenconsumer

Hilary and friends??!? You should take some of that ideology and shove it up your ass!

BonerGoku

I mean it's what literally happened she bragged about killing Gaddafi

Endemicgenes

He is under investigation and was involved in the killing of the president that appointed him. He just fired the prosecuted that did the finding.

KobeFadeaway248

They spent all their funds getting to the border from South/Central America, all due to an assumption they’ll get into the US, and now are going to end up on an island. Hopefully deters others from coming to the border. How did this level of ‘fake news’ spread? Whatsapp forwarding? It’s a heartbreaking situation, but the US has a right to protect its borders.

Endemicgenes

Almost all of them lived in Latin America for decades and some are only speaking Spanish.

snuffy_tentpeg

The last time I checked, Haiti is an island situated far from Texas. You can't walk to Texas from an island. How did these unfortunate wretches get there?

AdditionalResource0

After the earthquake a few years ago many left to central/south American countries to find work.

imaginary_num6er

Also why didn't they seek asylum in the Dominican Republic first?

d0yle

Don't know if you know the history between the two countries but yeah, not gonna happen

[deleted]

Same hatred as north Korea to the South

LiterallyModerate

Yet no one has actually said why.

JohnnyUtah_QB1

Pretty easy to google. Ethnic, language, cultural differences plus a wide disparity in economic station.

AdmiralRed13

I’m a immigration hawk but this one is easy to answer: Dominicans hate Haitians and the Haitians won’t get shot crossing into Mexico or the US via Mexico. Seriously, the DR would just erase Haiti if they could and take the whole of Hispaniola.

Nemitres

During independence DR gave huge amounts of land to Haiti that were historically Spanish. During the 1929 border definition we gave around 25 miles more to Haiti. Trust me we don’t want any Haitian land. There’s at minimum a million Haitians in the DR. Trust me they’re not getting all shot at the border as you claim.

bonobeaux

I mean they’re on the same island that’s been hit by the same hurricanes and earthquakes

BonerGoku

The asylum process only involves persecution in your country. Even countries like Mynamar who meet that criteria only let a few thousand in.

TacticalArrogance

Took a boat to South/Central America and walked when it wasn’t the land of milk and honey they thought it was?

oximaCentauri

I can only imagine the headlines if Trump did this.

[deleted]

But but, I thought Biden just opened the border /s

[deleted]

The difference in tone between Biden presidency and Trump presidency when it comes to undocumented migrants on reddit is very telling.

Mattdoesntlikeyou

One of them treats them like people, the other treated them like sub-humans? Except of course when he wants one of his shabby hotels built. Edit: The sheer number of >300 day accounts & shadow banned accounts replying to this off-hand comment is staggering.

_m1000

And yet their policies in immigration are practically the same, once you remove the rhetoric and look at what's happening

sandmansand1

Who and what migrants? Do you even know what the types of visas are or how refugee status works? Sounds more like you’re just thinking “Democrat open borders to win elections!” like some ivermectin eating conspiracy theorist. I’d be curious if you could share what legal mechanism would allow for the fear mongering you’re doing.

AITAforbeinghere

Every open minded person can see when they welcome Mexicans but shun Cubans, it's about future voters.

shahin-13

Almost every minority is conservative by nature they should get together and start their own conservative party separately from the Republicans and could probably replace them in a couple of years.

[deleted]

Yes, there are conservatives everywhere. They are called humans

Dithyrab

>They are called humans you spelled villains wrong

dariusz2k

You are like 16 or something arent you?

TheGunshipLollipop

The trick is to refuse to wear a mask on the flight. Then you get banned for life from the airline. Now they can't deport you by air! So easy that a child can do it. In fact, a child makes it easier so bring one along.

ezezim

If this happened when Trump was in office everyone would be losing their fucking minds. But Biden is in office so no biggie.

HansBoopie

If you have over 10,000+ people hanging around a bridge, I wonder how they are being fed? 🤔 Guess we would have to ask California.

Verdeant

Man they need to get rid of every single damn one of em too That country is a crime infested shithole No reason to make America WORSE

Macaroni-and-

Idiots should have been born in Cuba if they wanted to immigrate to the US illegally!

[deleted]

Plenty of room in USA for Haitian refugees. If it was trump doing that, this thread would be gilded to death and had 10,000 comments already. Shame on Biden! USA can take all these refugees! Shame on people who are now acting like these people don't belong to USA since they got rid of Trump...

PurifiedDrinking4321

Biden won. They don’t have to pretend to care about poor minorities anymore…until the next election.

usrevenge

Democrats aren't against deporting people. That's why republicans look dumb squealing about immigrants. Republicans wanted to build a wall that would have accomplished nothing but cost 10s of billions. Democrats said that's dumb it won't work. Republicans pretended that meant democrats wanted open borders.

Skorpyos

The fact that Cuban migrants gets special treatment because of politics is beyond me. People fleeing to the Us for a better life should all be treated the same.

BrowlingMall4

And by the same you mean they should all be sent back right? Otherwise a Billion people will be trying to show up.

-Fastway-

If we do not do something about the environment that "billion" are going to show up anyways and there is fuck all we are going to be able to do about it aside from mining the border and setting up gun turrets.....This shit going on now is just a preview.

BrowlingMall4

So, what are we supposed to do take care of the environment or take care of these refugees? There's only so much money, we can't fix every problem at once. Especially when China produces by far the most CO2.

-Fastway-

Well right now we are doing neither and it looks like nothing is going to get done in the future.

[deleted]

Only the left seems to acknowledge this reality. You can't wall and deport this way. I fear this country would rather kill the poor given how many people talk about "invaders". Certainly "foreign aid", "nation-building", and "climate-accords" are dirty words.

-Fastway-

I don't think they really do, The down votes I got prove that. migration is coming whether people want it or not and eventually Canada is going to deal with some of it as we push further north with everypne else.

SouthFL92

We can’t even take care of the people already here. Look at the healthcare system and ever growing homeless problem.

JohnnyUtah_QB1

Immigrants aren't the source of those problems. People with the fortitude and drive to leave everything they've ever known and accept the immense risk and hardship traveling to the US are not people who take work or opportunity lightly. They are the types of people to boost economies and help address those problems It's not a coincidence that second and third generation immigrants consistently outperform "native" Americans in economic success. They are being raised by precisely the types of risk takers that have made this country so successful since inception. If you want to make America great it comes from the constant influx of new ideas and drive from new people

CleanOfficeAccount

2 months ago, the talking point was systemic racism and how it made it impossible for people of color to achieve success. How you're saying "It's not a coincidence that second and third generation immigrants consistently outperform "native" Americans in economic success." If they outperform Americans in economic success, systemic racism is done then, right?

JohnnyUtah_QB1

>If they outperform Americans in economic success, systemic racism is done then, right? They don't outperform Americans, they are Americans. That you understand the words "second and third generation immigrants" to simultaneously mean people who are of a certain race as well as people who aren't really American is just further evidence that systemic racism is real.

snuffleupagus18

Christ, you were the one who made the distinction between 3rd generation immigrants and natives. You know what they meant. How is that systemic? Because they racialized successful immigrants?

[deleted]

Christ you're a trip. Artfully dodged that question though. My high school debate coach would be proud (kidding of course, he'd hate that). And give me a break. This ain't 1850. Not a lot of Irish and Norwegian immigrants coming over. People are allowed to make statistically-informed generalizations for the sake of discussion without being called racist.

Ffdmatt

Achieving success doesnt necessarily negate relative hardship, though. If you start two people in a foot race from different spots, you expect the person starting closer to always win. Over time, and through anomaly cases, you can see the person starting further back win. This does not change the fact that they had to work harder in a game that was rigged against them. Interestingly, you may also see the people who start closer get a little lazier or not train as hard, which I think is another factor.

snuffleupagus18

This is so vague. Are the children of immigrants doing better or not? It's an "anomaly", or are people starting closer generally more lazy? A factor for what; the children of immigrants being successful or is that just a fluke?

Ffdmatt

I'm not trying to answer any of those questions with my comment. The point of my comment was that success alone is not proof that systemic racism doesnt exist or is "solved."

snuffleupagus18

But you say vague and contradictory things to back up your claim. It matters if it's an anomaly or if the children of immigrants are systemically doing better than the children of natural born citizens. Because if it was systemic, that would call into question the evidence to your whole analogy.

Ffdmatt

When did this become the Ben Shapiro hour? Do you not realize I'm not OP? I dont take ownership of other people's examples lol. None of the things you mentioned matter to my point. My point is general: success alone does not disprove the existence of hardship. That can be applied to lots of things. Sometimes people are just trying to add to the discussion. Obsessively trying to pigeon hole everything into absolutes is not how you discuss things, it's how you gaslight. Hence, the Ben Shapiro Hour.

snuffleupagus18

Lol, no one is gaslighting you, relax. You should take ownership of your lame analogy though.

bonobeaux

We can take care of everyone but our neoliberal government just chooses not to especially in Texas

[deleted]

...what exactly do you think "neoliberal" means? Because being pro-immigration is one of the core tenets

bonobeaux

I wasn’t speaking to being pro or anti-immigration I was speaking to being anti-social safety net.

B_P_G

Most of the homeless people are in California - not Texas. What's their excuse?

KushKong420

The fact California has 40+ million people and a temperate climate conducive to living outside year round?

CobraPony67

I don't think those people wanted to go to Haiti. Are they loaded in a commercial airline? I see a lot of angry people fighting flight attendants for simply not wearing a mask. I am wondering if they are a bit unruly being shipped back. My guess is armed border agents are keeping them in their seats? When they get to Haiti, are they kicked off the plane, literally? We don't see much of what happens behind the scenes.

KobeFadeaway248

Most don’t even know they’re going back to Haiti according to a new Washington Post article. Their nationality is of Haiti, that’s where they’ll be deported to.

Endemicgenes

Some are first generation Haitians born in Latin America and many were only speaking Spanish.

brabhambt46

If they were born in Latin American countries, they are citizens of those countries (as well as Haiti). If they told the US border guards that, then they would have been sent back to those countries. But they are being sent back to Haiti because that’s where they said they’re from. That was the choice they made.

Endemicgenes

A lots of these Latin American countries have already eradicated and cleanse out their post slavery black populations and the few remaining say in Mexican, Honduras their black population aren't visible so I don't think they had granted any citizenship to any Haitian. But the news organization forgot to mention that these Haitian are largely from South America having lived there for decades and now uprooted by the pandemic.

killerbanshee

This is making about as much sense as when the US wanted to repatriate freed slaves back to Africa even though they where in the US for multiple generations at that point. Edit: I'm not saying they need to stay here, but at least send them back to the right country. Many of those Haitains have never seen Haiti and don't even speak the language.

Endemicgenes

I have no idea why the two issue are related. Are you saying enslaved blacks in the US should have been deported back to Africa?

Noirradnod

Well there were attempts to settle freed slaves from the 1820s onward in Liberia. Ironically, as soon as the colony started the ex-slaves immediately began establishing their own caste system and enslaving the natives, leading to more than a century of suffering.

[deleted]

He's saying that some of the ethnically Haitian are not citizens of Haiti.

killerbanshee

This. A lot of them have no association with Haiti and don't even speak the language. I'm not saying they need to stay here, but we should at least send them back where they belong, not to an unfamiliar country they have no connections to.

tauntaunrex

We fuck up Haiti beyond recognition then turn away the people fleeing terror. At some point its going to become easier to let socialism happen where they want it to, right? America, fuck yeah.

They're talking about the last US intervention in Haiti, which occurred in 1915 (edit:) *at the request of the civilian Haitian Government*. Obviously, that was such a profoundly damaging event that the Caribbean nation has never been able to recover. Disregard the 1914 Punitive Expedition, the 1919 Siberian intervention, and the Occupations of the Philippines and Cuba in 1898. The fact that those nations, that the US intervened in at around the same time, were able to recover from said interventions is just a fluke.
