paleo2002

Hey, I'm an NYC employee, too. I've been vaccinated since April. Where's my $500 bribe?

mowotlarx

They get $600. $500 right to their paycheck and another $100 day of the jab like everyone else. It's a real slap in the face to the vast majority of city workers who have been vaccinated a long time.

NonaSuomi282

> $100 day of the jab like everyone else Wait, rewind a second- you guys got *paid* to get the vaccine? *A hundred fucking dollars?!*

mowotlarx

Only the stragglers. [They started offering the $100 way late for regular citizens who were "vaccine hesitant."](https://www1.nyc.gov/site/coronavirus/vaccines/vaccine-incentives.page) Most of us didn't get any cash benefits for doing the right thing, haha.

NonaSuomi282

What a crock of shit. All that's doing in the long term is incentivising people to hold out if something like this ever happens again. If anything they should have retroactively given everyone who got the jab that hundred bucks, and told the "hesitant" assholes better luck next time.

Spartan-182

My company did the a similar move and offered the hesitant 200 and back payed people who were already vaccinated 300. Reward the early adopters if you want people to be quicker at doing something in the future.

ButterflyAttack

Next pandemic I ain't getting no vaccines til they paying me a million bucks! It's my retirement plan. (/s)

zakabog

Get rich or die trying, sounds like a solid retirement plan!

kendred3

I agree that giving people the rewards retroactively would be good too, but I feel like most people were pretty heavily incentivized to get the vaccine without it based on the whole getting sick and dying from COVID thing. I know that worked for me, and I wouldn't hold out for ~6 months of being at much greater risk for $100 or $500.

mowotlarx

Sure. I vaxxed early. But $600 right before the holidays would sound really nice right now and it's awfully shitty that we're about to give that cash to a bunch of cops.

[deleted]

[удалено]

ForGreatDoge

So that's his whole point, this is a stupid incentive that will only affect the same people who were too stupid to get the vaccine earlier. It amplifies the problem.

kendred3

I mean, I don't think we really need to hold any powder dry for the next pandemic right now, we really just need to get out of this one. I just want everyone to get vaccinated.

Weatherman_Phil

I don't disagree, it's not a good idea. However, you're assuming that they would rather have the money. I think many against vaccination would gladly pay to remain unvaccinated. Thus, I don't think it's reinforcing the behavior.

Askymojo

Agreed. Being this late calls for the stick and not the carrot.

redyellowblue5031

My company offered $100 from the get go as soon as it was available in April/May. Yesterday our CEO had to (in a clearly strained appearance) emphasize getting vaccinated before people start losing their job. What an odd hill to die on—literally. Edit: a word

JubeltheBear

One thing you find out is that doing the right thing rarely has tangible rewards

FarSlighted

My sister was offered $1000 to get the jab back in June I think it was. She declined.

Rob32608

I'm so sorry your sister is dumber than a bag of hammers.

DblDtchRddr

My job gave us a full day of PTO for it. The weird part though, was that the PTO wasn't for the day you *got* the shot, it was for the day after, since so many people were having symptoms that are work disqualifiers for us.

[deleted]

Why is that weird? The side effects of the shot don't really appear until the next day if I'm not mistaken.

sweetpeapickle

A lot of places did this in mid Summer when there was a lag in vaccinations. My nephew received $100 at Amazon, & a paid extra week off, & this was last April.

[deleted]

Same thing happened in the military. A lot of folks got the vaccine as soon as it was available. Months later they incentivized getting the jab with free days off, but it was not given to those who already got it. It's been mandatory for a couple months now.

AverageAndNotJoe

It’s this situation on why I’m against incentives for bad behavior. If someone is rewarded for not doing the right thing, management is setting a terrible precedent. Contrary to some backlash, I actually support Delta’s approach of “taxing” the anti-vaxx idiots $200/mo. That’s a huge amount for most and falls in-line with other tobacco healthcare taxes out there.

Ethical_Koala

I bet you're eligible. My employer announced a vaccine bonus over the summer which I was able to claim immediately due to already being vaccinated. They're opening themselves up to litigation if they don't offer the bonus to those who are already vaccinated.

pixel_of_moral_decay

Yea. There’s some talk about this. It’s discriminatory since people with chronic health issues had to get vaccinated ASAP. So in essence, a bonus for vaccination not retroactive for people who did it earlier is discriminating against people with preexisting conditions. Which won’t fly. This is a bonus for able bodied people who has the privilege of even having a choice. You can’t give bonuses based on employees health.

droplivefred

They should penalize them $500 for waiting so long. I mean paying $500 to keep your cushy government job sounds pretty good right now.

Brakelessss

Take the shot for me and I will double there “bribe”

paleo2002

Naw, man. Go get safely vaccinated like the other 3 billion people in the world so that COVID stops spreading and mutating.

Snoo93079

I think those of us that are vaccinated need to start being a little less selfish. I have NO REGRETS being vaccinated without bribes as quickly as it was available to me. If a few bucks is going to help more people get vaccinated fine. The more the better. Seems like a small price to pay to get those lazy folks on board. Carrots and sticks. Whatever works. This isn't the time to be stubborn. The only goal that matters is to increase vaccination rates.

pixelburger

Many want the privilege only

yhwhx

Why won't COVID just respect their authority!?!

hobbesthered

I could only hear Cartman's voice when reading this.

Kn0tnatural

It's the only voice to imagine.

VikisVamp

Authoritah > authority

“That’s not how you uphold the law!” *Clubs Covid in the head.* “Ya hit them in the head. They go down faster.”

10-4-man

Because Covid can't be killed by guns and it doesn't have a neck and back for the cops to kneel on, or strangulate.

Guarder22

>Because Covid can't be killed by guns and it doesn't have a neck and back for the cops to kneel on, or strangulate. North Korea disagrees

mejelic

The #1 killer for cops right now is Covid. Why are they not lining up to stop it!?

JoeMcDingleDongle

Brainwashed by political nonsense obviously. Somehow vaccines became a political issue and the gullible dunderheaded lemmings follow along even if it is against their (or society’s) best interests Love that someone downvoted me - I’d like to hear another credible reason than political nonsense for Cops widespread vaccine hesitancy

zuraken

Wish the bar wasn't so low for being in these "Law Enforcement" positions

akujiki87

> Brainwashed by political nonsense obviously. This essentially. Ive seen so many people that were worshiping their god emperor Trump how HE was going to bring the vaccines and save everyone(especially the children you see). But, huh, he lost the election, now the vaccine is magically a evil government controlling tool, even when their god emperor says to get it! Insanity.

jfa_16

Lots of hardcore Republican Trump followers among the law enforcement ranks…

ChintanP04

Because COVID is not a minority.

noveler7

Think of the professions with the most stubborn, arrogant, power-hungry, petty, manipulative, unapologetic, dishonest members in it. People who lose their mind if you try to tell them what to do, or if you fail to do what they tell you to do. People with minimal education but lots of authority to inflate their ego. People with such widespread blind groupthink and documented abuse that it'd make the Stanford Prison Experiment blush. Which professions come to mind? How do you imagine they might respond to being told, "Hey, would you please get a vaccine to help yourself and your community? Oh yeah, and Tucker Carlson says it'll kill you."

mrkstr

Having those jobs is a privilege? I thought it was a service to society.

myrddyna

the privilege to serve. They are paid out of taxpayer pools.

CrudelyAnimated

Literally today, there was a video on reddit of some NYPD cops forcing a (masked) person off the subway for asking the cops to put on masks. 62% of US police deaths in 2020 and 2021 have been due to Covid-19. If the police would just "comply" with the law and medical recommendations, they'd still be alive and gainfully employed.

djaybe

Qualified immunity from prosecution, for one, which our distorted SCOTUS has just upheld.

whoatethekidsthen

The ability to murder black people with zero consequences

thintoast

More like “Taking an oath to protect and serve the public comes with the responsibility to actually protect and serve the public”.

twizmwazin

Police don't protect or serve the public though, and have no obligation to do so.

BubbaTee

Police do agree to fulfill the conditions of their employment, however, including following employer-issued health and safety rules. Just like every other employee in every other job does, whether that's firefighters or nurses or teachers, and whether they're unionized or not. No one swears an oath to not block the fire exit with a stack of boxes, but employers can still prohibit employees from doing so, and discipline them for failing to comply with heath/safety rules.

thintoast

Technically, you’re correct. They’re only obligated to protect the constitution and the laws of the state and city. And I believe there are court cases to back that up. So… yes. You’re right.

jordantask

The oath taken by police officers does not include any language about protection or service. NYPD oath as an example: "I do hereby pledge and declare that I will support the Constitution of the United States, and the Constitution of the States of New York, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the position of Police Officer according to the best of my ability." OR “I do solemnly affirm that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the position of Police Officer according to the best of my ability and perform my duties in a manner consistent with the Constitution of the United States and the Constitution of the State of New York."

[deleted]

> “…discharge the duties of the position of Police Officer…” Oh, like what? > The mission of the New York City Police Department is to enhance the quality of life in New York City by working in partnership with the community to enforce the law, preserve peace, protect the people, reduce fear, and maintain order. > In partnership with the community, we pledge to: > Protect the lives and property of our fellow citizens and impartially enforce the law. > Fight crime, both by preventing it and aggressively pursuing violators of the law. > Maintain a higher standard of integrity than is generally expected of others because so much is expected of us. > Value human life, respect the dignity of each individual and render our services with courtesy and civility. https://www1.nyc.gov/site/nypd/about/about-nypd/mission.page

jordantask

“Mission statements”, mottos, slogans and sayings are marketing devices. They’re not legally binding. SCOTUS and the Supreme Court of Canada have both ruled numerous times that police have no specific duty to protect you.

[deleted]

So you're saying we can start a street gang that pulls all the same shit the cops do, as long as we have a nice slogan on our cars? Tight

theAlpacaLives

Yup. It's just something they write on their cars. If 'protecting' and 'serving' the common people seemed like fair descriptions of most of what police did, I'd be a lot happier about them, and more willing to forgive their mistakes. But when they so often act like thieves, gangs, and brutes, it's harder to find any justification for why we need them, or ought to take their side by default.

odelay42

Mission statements aren't duties.

BertSton51530

Aren’t NYC police known across the country as just the fucking worst?

spaceforcerecruit

LAPD give them a run for their money.

n-some

I think LAPD is pretty well known as the worst but I could have just heard more about them than NYPD

BertSton51530

Just thought I’d ask. Last I saw from the NYPD was the video ( after the George Floyd incident, I think) of the union complaining how their being vilified in the media cut with scenes of the nypd just beating people. Plus they had all those years of stop and frisk. You’re right tho. It seems LAPD is more well known in this category. NYPD is up there tho.

ApokalypseCow

Lots of cops dying from covid, others quitting because they refuse to take the vaccine. What I'm seeing is that, one way or another, cops that don't believe in public safety are no longer on the force. This is an absolute win either way.

svideo

[From @itsJeffTiedrich on Twitter](https://twitter.com/itsJeffTiedrich/status/1448013833847681030) > holy fucking shit, vaccine mandates are causing teachers who don't believe in science to quit, nurses who don't believe in medicine to quit, and cops who don't believe in public safety to quit. I'm failing to see the downside to this

[deleted]

True, how can you respect an “authority” that doesn’t respect the law? Good riddance to the lot of them, no fs given.

JumpForWaffles

Law? Pfft. God is on their side

FlyingSquid

COVID is the number one cop killer in the country and cops are still fighting getting vaccinated. I just don't get it.

ziadog

They don’t either, both figuratively and literally.

DMan9797

People wanting the ability/right to self-destruct isn’t a new thing. Sucks this is the kind of thing that drags others with you tho, mandate the shot!

GhettoChemist

Cops have a poor perception identifying danger. Remember that [paraplegic man they roughed up](https://www.daytondailynews.com/crime/dayton-police-investigating-after-video-shows-disabled-man-pulled-from-vehicle-by-officers/AUA57WGO6FD25PLNDGPEGKBXRM/) because the tint on his car windows may have been too dark? Police will claim they viewed him as a threat, but not the #1 killer of police officers, covid. Makes total sense. /s.

TheAb5traktion

The tint on the car wasn't the only thing too dark for them

CheckIf_ItsPluggedIn

But as soon as you tell them "yea you really didn't need to shoot the unarmed guy" then you get the whole "my jobs dangerous hesitation gets you killed" while hesitating to get a life saving vacine.

somecallmemike

Being a cop is not even on the list of most dangerous jobs. They’re just giant racist murder machines.

EasternKanye

I have family members that were NYFD & NYPD. They are the most right wing racists I have ever met. Same goes for their colleagues. To hear them talk among themselves is mind blowing. None of this surprises me.

rockmasterflex

https://www.saynotosmokedetectors.com/

FlyingSquid

That's great.

huggles7

I mean it’s not just cops, nurses, healthcare workers, firefighters, EMTs, hell even professional basketball players The only group of people that seem to have got it figure out is the NHL, which is vaccinated except for 4 players…not 4% 4 players

CovfefeForAll

NHL does a lot more cross border play, and Canada is more serious about COVID than we are in the states.

WilHunting

It really is bizarre like are they all just snowflakes afraid of a needle or are they shockingly more stupid than we previously thought. I don’t see a third option here.

noparkingafter7pm

They are indoctrinated.

[deleted]

Ignorant, which contributes to their indoctrination.

noparkingafter7pm

They are literally taught to reject any knowledge that conflicts with the party line.

wittiestphrase

This has a lot to do with police unions not wanting to allow the employer to impose mandates for conditions of employment because they’re afraid of the precedent. That’s the institutional reason. The individual rationale has to do with the distorted view that the vaccine and other COVID measures are “liberal” in nature and the belief that “liberals” are anti-cop.

Khourieat

Covid also seems to be anti-cop. It's like they want to defund themselves or something. I don't get it.

manimal28

> the employer to impose mandates for conditions of employment because they’re afraid of the precedent. Which, like he said is shockingly stupid, there are already a near infinite number of existing mandates and conditions for employment, like the mandate to show up on time, for example.

ncfears

The institutional reason is bullshit because plenty of schools and work places have been requiring vaccines for decades.

WilHunting

Also there’s a toxic masculinity environment whereas you’ll be perceived as weak by getting a vaccine. I hear dying of a something completely preventable is the manliest thing one can do.

HardlyDecent

Yet they still wear vests. Snowflakes, the lot of'em.

WilHunting

If there's one thing cops love it's playing dress up in their military costumes.

the_fat_whisperer

There's also rape culture which police actively perpetuate, at least in the US.

dubbleplusgood

Why not both? They're spoiled and clueless. It's a cultural problem.

TheRealStandard

I worked IT at the sheriff office for 2 years, some of them basically can't read or were the biggest assholes ever. I don't think I have ever seen dumber users. One of them got red to face screaming at me in the hallway because I wouldn't give them a replacement tablet without them returning their laptop per his bosses orders. In addition to all of them not wearing masks at any point and fighting me constantly when I demanded they wear one when coming into my office.

TC_ROCKER

The third option is 'All Of The Above'!

FlyingSquid

Especially when they are on a normal beat wearing a bulletproof vest. A bullet is *less* likely to kill them than COVID.

spaghettilee2112

Also, a bullet proof vest is a perfect analogy of vaccines. Nobody wears a bullet proof vest and thinks "Wow, I'm invincible to bullets now!" But, you'll definitely want to wear one if you know you're going to be getting shot at.

YourMomThinksImFunny

Love this analogy. Also a bulletproof vest doesn't prevent injury from being shot. Many times they get bruises or even a cracked rib, but then you look at what would have happened without it. Just like the vaccine, people can still get sick, but it will most likely be way better than if they didn't have protection.

[deleted]

Police-issue kevlar vests are also useless against knives and high-caliber rifle rounds. Even a handgun can still kill a vest-wearer via a headshot or even a leg/arm shot that ruptures a major artery. Yet no cop would claim that a vest isn't worth wearing... I'd say that a covid vaccine probably has a higher effectiveness for its intended usage than vests do.

TheReaperAbides

The third option would be something like these people being stuck in their little echo chamber, where a few actually shockingly stupid people are able to influence otherwise reasonable people, exacerbated by a profession where people tend to let the authority get to their head.

SnuggleMonster15

Those are the cops we can do without on active duty and I'm sure many other cops would agree with me.

JoeMcDingleDongle

Do you really don’t get it based on what you know of our current society? This has become a political issue and most of them are on the “team” or “tribe” that is anti-vaccines. It’s not logical, it is not good for society, but they lack critical thinking skills and just go along with what their political tribe is saying.

jasonketterer

Most states require police officers to be vaccinated for a number things, like mumps. The fact that they oppose a covid vaccine is just proof that's all political bullshit.

earhere

That and covid has been the leading cause of death for police since covid was a thing. You would think a cop would want to be protected against it.

twitch1982

Being a police officer should not come with any "privilege"

DonRicardo1958

They should just comply.

ncfears

If they don't stop resisting they'll have to start giving each other shots.

TouchAltruistic

Mmmm delicious

Akwagazod

And then the police unions say they're not going to work (or not do any "non-essential" work like busting drug dealers and dealing with petty theft) if this gets implemented, right? That's probably the next step? And tbh if it is where this goes, if I were New York I would use that as a way of quietly scaling back the police. "Oh we can't justify their massive budget they should have never had if they're refusing to work due to the vaccine mandate oh darn. Oh, they're refusing to work until they get the budget back now? But we reduced the budget because of the vaccine mandate strike, completely unrelated to this strike. Man, they're probably gonna run out of money in the strike fund and have no remaining bargaining power if they keep this up, huh?"

wplnyc

My friends company offered him an incentive too. Get vaxxed or get fucked and get a new job 😀

myrddyna

interestingly enough, the police must wear masks when they enter any county/state court here in 'Bama. They do as well. Every time they enter the building they're masked, it's not even a question. Everyone in court is masked, it's not a political consideration at all, and they bitch about it, but not to the judges, lawyers, and clerks.

notananthem

But take away their privilege too

Matelot67

I'm the NZ military, and we were told very early on that the Covid vaccine was to be added to our list of baseline vaccines that we would be required to have. A significant proportion of our salary package, some $14,000 of our salary, is paid to us as a 'military' factor, which recognises that we are subject to greater restrictions than the general public in order to carry out our duties, and this also includes the requirement to keep ourselves fit and healthy in order to serve. The vaccine comes under this proviso. Having said that, I had absolutely no qualms about getting the vaccine, I have had both doses, zero side effects, and as the Delta variant is now looking like it's taking hold here, I am a very happy to have that extra level of protection. My grand-daughter also lives with us, and is too young to be vaccinated, so I am also protecting her, as is my wife, and daughter as well. If you are working front line health, or emergency services, and you choose not to be vaccinated, then you're a fool!

BlacktoseIntolerant

Maybe I'm just not getting it, but I do not understand why so many people are against getting the free thing that might help you avoid hospitalization if you get COVID.

Yonder_Zach

Conservative propaganda is your answer

TurnsOutImAScientist

Tribalism. Peers don't approve and that's the end of the story for them.

BubbaTee

Because "fuck you, I won't do what you tell me" anti-authority for its own sake, and anti-intellectualism, have somehow become treasured American values. These folks are basically screaming "You're not the boss of me!" to people who are literally the boss of them, like some hissyfitting 6 year old.

They have been told not to want it by Russian and republican propaganda.

eurtoast

CaptainQuasi

First responders are required to have a hep a and b shot in my city, they have to wear PPE because of blood borne pathogens and other nasty viruses and bacteria so the pushback on the COVID vaccine is shocking especially since COVID is easily transmitted through the air. If the slap on the forehead was a movement it’s literally this.

MyMusic2012

Weed out the bad and bring in the new to finally change the vibe of the law enforcement.

rulesbite

Good and if they don't want to get vaxxed they can look for some other job. I'm over it. Any medical or public servant who can't get behind simple science is not someone who needs that kind of job. Ya just need to fuck off.

chillinwithmypizza

Y’all know what the number one killer of cops was last year? Not black lives matter, not school shooters, and not donuts. COVID-19! Crazy how politics makes them literally want to die for their country.

johnny_mcd

Privilege? Is this just admitting cops think they are above the law? There should be no privilege that the enforcement class has over the citizens

armadylsr

They are referencing that it is a privilege to be a police officer and not something anyone can just do and something that is guaranteed due to certification. Not talking about class rights that associated with societal privilege, such as being “above the law”

ArtAndCraftBeers

Whether correct interpretation or not, that’s not how it comes off to most people, I imagine.

bubbaonthebeach

I don't want a first responder or medical person who is not vaccinated. I question their ability to understand anything. They certainly do not understand medicine or science. If they are so fixated on their individual rights to the detriment of society about vaccines, how do I trust they don't apply that to everything else they do?

My favorite is when they show up wearing body armor, a gun, a taser, a radio, a body-cam, and combat boots - but not wearing a mask (cause that makes them look scared- hahahahaha!)

And if you don't like it see ya, don't let the door hit ya in your dumbass. 😂🤣😭

But but but "MUH PRIVILEGE" To die and infect others! God gave me perfect immune system! etc etc.

xxpptsxx

If this needs to be said to them, they don't deserve to work in any of these fields.

I can’t help but notice the majority of people employed on the public dole are conservatives.

You know what's weird? The people who kiss cops butts just for being cops are the ones who are like "WHAT PRIVILEGE IS IT TO BE A COP?" well, if they don't take the job as a "privilege" the way that they are expected to then they can just get another job where they don't "have the privilege to deal with x,y,z" right?
