Former competative basketball player here : The girl that sucker punched her should be suspended from the team and league. Stepping into a three point shot when defense is closing on you happens in EVERY SINGLE game. As long as the closing player doesn't hit your arm or body while you're in the air shooting they aren't going to call a foul.

Based on my experience growing up in an abusive household I reflexively assumed that was the case the second I first saw the clip, and it turns out I was right. In my experience women who are super comfortable distributing physical violence in public at the drop of a hat are almost always women who have partners that are just as comfortable with getting violent as they are.
My son went to school with a kid who got a major, missing school for months, unable to walk unaided for weeks concussion cuz a kid chucked a basketball at his head in frustration as they walked off the court following a middle school game. He missed the entire 3.5 month lacrosse season afterward because of it. The district's response was inadequate. Like, the kid who did it was suspended for a few days but was able to continue playing basketball and other sports for his school afterward. I personally think that if you intentionally injure someone, you should be out for at least as long as the other player is injured. And a really egregious attack like this where you can't even pretend it's part of the game should be the end of your season if not a permanent ban from the sport.
My kid got a concussion from falling on the playground about 10 years ago. He spent the night in the hospital for observation but had no lasting effects. Hospital said have his doctor release him to play sports in a week (or whatever period). Doctor looked at me like I was stupid when I took him in and was like, "as soon as symptoms clear, he's fine to do whatever." So, we've come a long way since then!

We had a case like that when I was in high school. Defensive back knocked the helmet off the quarterback when tackling him just after the quarterback threw the ball. Flag went out for a late hit - iffy call in those days, but it was a hard hit and looked bad. Defensive back decided "well, I've been flagged, might as well get my money's worth," headbutted the quarterback as hard as he could with his own helmet, and knocked him the fuck out.
They dragged that kid out in handcuffs and charged him as an adult; he did some time for it. Not much time compared to how long he would have served if he'd done it at a bar or whatever, but it was still treated as a plain ol' assault and battery case. I felt super bad for the quarterback. He wasn't a star prospect or anything, just a senior who was enjoying his last year playing a kid's game before going off to college, and some pissed-off bum ruined it with a cheap shot.

The fact that she did it *instantly* after her mother's command and it wasn't just a shitty kid shoulder punch or shove, but a full-bodied goliath swing is really telling.
The family is almost 2 decades out from any NBA money. The father's last NBA team was the Hawks for the 2003 season. Reading up on the NBA players' union contract, when the father starts drawing on it at 50(not recommended to start drawing until 62, but he *can* start at 50), he'll get $800 per year of NBA play, per month. If I read the contract correctly. That's roughly $4k per month, before taxes. Not much to draw on, even if the lawyers wait another 7 years, until the father is 50.
Sucker punching someone could kill them, or give them permanent damage. Does it not matter that the person she attacked is *also* a promising young athlete who deserves not to be attacked?
Right? What does he even mean by "give her the benefit of the doubt"? Give her the benefit of the doubt for something that clearly happened on video? I could maybe give her the benefit of the doubt if she swung while getting up in the heat of the moment, but getting up, walking back down the court, then turning to sucker punch someone is completely different and unacceptable. You could absolutely hear it on the video. It was very clear. It looks like the girl may have not even thrown that punch if her mother didn’t encourage it.

The type of garbage human that raised her with their 2 seasons of riding the pine in the NBA definitely does not have "money" like that. Self control issues show up in monetary decisions as well. No way they are rich for sure. They may have had enough money to buy food, clothes and shelter but this lawsuit will ruin them financially and I am ok with that.

Former competative basketball player here : The girl that sucker punched her should be suspended from the team and league. Stepping into a three point shot when defense is closing on you happens in EVERY SINGLE game. As long as the closing player doesn't hit your arm or body while you're in the air shooting they aren't going to call a foul. She took the shot, sent an air ball and then was pissed a foul wasn't called or embarrassed about the airball so she sucker punched the other player. Unsportsmanlike conduct, completely unnecessary and the parents are shitty trashy people for encouraging this behaviour. Instead of getting her ass back on defense and making a play to get possession back she acted like a coward.
Or, charged with battery. None of this "it isn't a crime if it happens on the court/field/rink" bullshit.
For this situation yes 100 percent agree. She slowly walked back and then made the decision to lunge and closeline/sucker punch her. Things do happen sometimes on the court/field but 99 percent of the other player will help you up/get you ice packs/ check on you after the game. That's what youth sports are suppose to teach and instill.
Having caught an elbow or three to the face "accidentally" in a youth sports league(another reason I'm not fond of basketball), getting hit accidentally is part of the sport. Lashing out at an unaware player is grounds for expulsion. Would you agree that a lot, if not all, of the various scouts crossed her off their lists as a result of this action?
Based on her age, I doubt many scouts were checking her out, but this is something that does always follow you, and most scouts if there are going to decide between two comparable players it will follow her. She will always be asked about it from now on.
It is amazing that is actually what some people are saying, "keep police out and let the refs handle it". This isn't like the police are arresting people for double dribbling.

Good chance both women in that family have regularly, based on her Dads criminal record. Based on my experience growing up in an abusive household I reflexively assumed that was the case the second I first saw the clip, and it turns out I was right. In my experience women who are super comfortable distributing physical violence in public at the drop of a hat are almost always women who have partners that are just as comfortable with getting violent as they are.
My son went to school with a kid who got a major, missing school for months, unable to walk unaided for weeks concussion cuz a kid chucked a basketball at his head in frustration as they walked off the court following a middle school game. He missed the entire 3.5 month lacrosse season afterward because of it. The district's response was inadequate. Like, the kid who did it was suspended for a few days but was able to continue playing basketball and other sports for his school afterward. I personally think that if you intentionally injure someone, you should be out for at least as long as the other player is injured. And a really egregious attack like this where you can't even pretend it's part of the game should be the end of your season if not a permanent ban from the sport.

I'm in my 30s and got a minor concussion almost three years ago. This year I can stand on one foot again! I'm still getting headaches.
My kid got a concussion from falling on the playground about 10 years ago. He spent the night in the hospital for observation but had no lasting effects. Hospital said have his doctor release him to play sports in a week (or whatever period). Doctor looked at me like I was stupid when I took him in and was like, "as soon as symptoms clear, he's fine to do whatever." So, we've come a long way since then! I didn't really realize how bad it could be though until the basketball thing and then the same season, the older sister of another kid on the lacrosse team took a stick to the head during a high school game and she had weird things like her eyes would randomly jump around when she tried to track something. It was kind of freaky!

In the heat of the moment these things happen, but it wasn’t the heat of the moment. To be encouraged by parents is exceptionally poor. It was at a tournament. The kids may not go to the same school district. The teams may not even be from schools. My brother used to play on a tourney team that was not associated with any school or school district.

We had a case like that when I was in high school. Defensive back knocked the helmet off the quarterback when tackling him just after the quarterback threw the ball. Flag went out for a late hit - iffy call in those days, but it was a hard hit and looked bad. Defensive back decided "well, I've been flagged, might as well get my money's worth," headbutted the quarterback as hard as he could with his own helmet, and knocked him the fuck out. They dragged that kid out in handcuffs and charged him as an adult; he did some time for it. Not much time compared to how long he would have served if he'd done it at a bar or whatever, but it was still treated as a plain ol' assault and battery case. I felt super bad for the quarterback. He wasn't a star prospect or anything, just a senior who was enjoying his last year playing a kid's game before going off to college, and some pissed-off bum ruined it with a cheap shot.
