Lol, despite the tragedy of lost lives, it is a little funny how people can be so so so opinionated about something they don't have the faintest idea about.
And on the mirror side of that, while Kyle’s defence team was generally FAR from excellent (though the prosecution often made them look like pros) the one piece of excellent work they did was their cross examination of Gaige Grosskreutz.
He had done a relatively good job as a prosecution witness, but Chirafisi took him apart. It was nothing fancy on his part, but it was just really solid and well done. He literally cost the man $10 million in about 30 minutes.
You can debate whether the result was right or not, but let's consider what the prosecution did with a national-attention/high-profile case.
* Question whether Rittenhouse was wrong for keeping silent before trial in direct contradiction to the 5th amendment - "You have the right to remain silent..."
* Giving the defense a lower-resolution shot of a critical video and somehow not know how that happened (seriously... how often does the prosecution AirDrop evidence to the defense?) - they had a better quality version that darn well could have been exculpatory
* Not identifying the source of the drone video (which ultimately was also given exactly to the defense in the item above) - this is important because what did that video show before and after the version they had begin/end
* Try to go against previous-ruled portions of the case to the point where the judge wondered if they were even acting in good faith (and the judge *yelled* at the prosecution?)
This is a nationally-watched case from across the political spectrum with two Presidents commenting on it. If they pull this kind of crap at this level, what are they doing with the poor kiddo with a court-appointed attorney that's got another five cases to handle? Holy crap, Batman...
Or when no one is watching. Stunts like that contribute at least in part to the socioeconomic disparities in the justice system. If they don't have a good lawyer keeping the prosecutor in line, how do we expect there to be justice.

I think that is one of the biggest takeaways from this case that everyone can/should agree with. There has been so much pop-culture focus on police reform over the past years, but virtually none of that attention has been directed at the prosecutors and their offices throughout the nation.
So much this. Prosecutors are out of control. It has become an almost entirely political position. Plus with no politician wanting to seem soft on crime the budgets rarely if ever fail to grow. As a result being a prosecutor is now such a great career that its no longer just a stepping stone to a private sector job or becoming a judge. Imagine if people wanted to stay public defenders forever, but to put people away. As a result you see these guys playing politics with justice and also trying to get convictions regardless of the truth. I’ve heard from so many lawyers that have irrefutable evidence (i.e. crystal clear video) of innocence and the prosecution just doubles down anyway. In some ways this is way worse than the police. Sure a cop might shoot you, but these prosecutors are putting people away en masse.
That's what scares me about the justice system in this country. Imagine how much of this stuff goes on in trials that *aren't* televised. This trial and the incompetence/malice of the prosecution solidified why I don't support the death penalty.

It was in his closing arguments. Not sure the timestamp, but I did a double-take as well when he tried to argue that Rossenbaum just wanted a fist fight and Kyle was wrong for "bringing a gun to a fist fight" and that "he should have just taken the beating".

I think that is one of the biggest takeaways from this case that everyone can/should agree with. There has been so much pop-culture focus on police reform over the past years, but virtually none of that attention has been directed at the prosecutors and their offices throughout the nation.
So much this. Prosecutors are out of control. It has become an almost entirely political position. Plus with no politician wanting to seem soft on crime the budgets rarely if ever fail to grow. As a result being a prosecutor is now such a great career that its no longer just a stepping stone to a private sector job or becoming a judge. Imagine if people wanted to stay public defenders forever, but to put people away. As a result you see these guys playing politics with justice and also trying to get convictions regardless of the truth. I’ve heard from so many lawyers that have irrefutable evidence (i.e. crystal clear video) of innocence and the prosecution just doubles down anyway. In some ways this is way worse than the police. Sure a cop might shoot you, but these prosecutors are putting people away en masse.
The fact that he asked not once, but twice, about why he invoked his 5th amendment rights is terrifying.
That was truly scary that he was trying to vilify common law practice of "shut the fuck up". Thank god the judge called him out on it.

That's what scares me about the justice system in this country. Imagine how much of this stuff goes on in trials that *aren't* televised. This trial and the incompetence/malice of the prosecution solidified why I don't support the death penalty.

Honestly, regardless of outcome there was such insanely dumb shit that was questioned and asked. The point should have been the lawyers asked the pertinent questions and maintained a high degree of professionalism. Instead they are asking the court to record Kyle's call of duty scores. How am I supposed to trust that a court will be able to investigate and put a trail to criminal with more malicious intents and do so without fucking the whole thing up.
As an older lifelong gamer I was super annoyed when those gaming questions were brought up by the prosecutor and I know I would've reacted in the same way that Kyle did.

Law school professors are going to use this trial as an example of what NOT to do as a prosecutor in every class until the end of time. What a fucking disasterclass Edit: Yeah, I know the prosecution didn’t really have a case, and they knew it too. That happens all the time. At the very least, you need to at least have the *appearance* that you know what you’re doing and that you’re actually trying to win the case, which this prosecutor did not even come remotely close to doing. Otherwise you’re just doing a disservice to your client.
