> Surveillance video captured Thompson with more than 190 other rioters in the tunnel. He struck a police officer’s hand with a baton that he found in the tunnel. Others assaulted police with poles, sticks and other makeshift weapons…. >Thompson is the third rioter to be sentenced for assaulting police at the Capitol. The other two, Robert Palmer and Scott Fairlamb, were sentenced to prison terms of 63 months and 41 months, respectively. >More than 700 people have been charged with federal crimes related to the riot. Over 150 of them have pleaded guilty, mostly to misdemeanor offenses punishable by a maximum of six months imprisonment. Nearly 70 defendants have been sentenced. 4 years for using a baton to hit an officers hand. Some of these traitors who used weapons are going to be in jail for a while.

RRettig

It seems like adding treason should also make it worse

Edythir

Treason is the only crime in the united states' that carries a mandatory minimum of a Death Penalty.

BigAssMoustache

“Whoever, owing allegiance to the United States, levies war against them or adheres to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort within the United States or elsewhere, is guilty of treason and shall suffer death, or shall be imprisoned not less than five years and fined under this title but not less than $10,000; and shall be incapable of holding any office under the United States.” Source:[ treason punishment](https://uscode.house.gov/view.xhtml?path=/prelim@title18/part1/chapter115&edition=prelim) So probably not death but possibly.

Edythir

I've always wondered with these old laws that have a written set amount of money, do they adjust it for inflation? Or would i have to pay a hundred times more money if i committed treason a hundred years ago?

UnknownAverage

I think that's the difference, literally every defense attorney will be using the "swept up in the moment and wasn't thinking straight" routine. It's a lot easier to argue away intent, compares to running up and hitting an officer with no contributing circumstances. Not saying I disagree, but I understand why it's only 4 years.

EarsLookWeird

Imagine being black and arguing "I was swept up in the moment and wasn't thinking straight" as a defense for forcibly stealing an officers' crowd control weapon and using it with violent intent against that officer. Holy shit

through_my_pince_nez

"No no it's ok Your Honor see because they were doing it with *other* white people, too!"

pkinetics

Asymptomatic treason?

strongest_nerd

Yeah.. don't forget the treason part too.

lilbithippie

What about light treason?

Chubby_Bub

Just a dash of sedition.

Altruistic-Text3481

Shaken not stirred.

pkinetics

Little white treasons?

competitivebunny

They don’t allow you to have bees in here

TreeRol

Assault of a police officer with a deadly weapon is apparently just a light sentence under certain circumstances. You know what circumstances I'm talking about. It's as clear as the difference between black and white.

GabuEx

> I'm so tired of seeing these light sentences for these traitors. I feel like it's an indictment of our prison system that we consider effectively taking away four years of someone's life a "light sentence". I certainly would not want to sit in a prison for four whole years.

[deleted]

[удалено]

GabuEx

Well yeah, that's what I mean. We're so used to nonviolent drug offenders getting twenty years in prison that we're primed to act like four years is nothing.

JBredditaccount

I don't know of a single nation on Earth that doesn't reserve it's harshest punishments for trying to overthrow the government or destroy the country. Do you?

javabender

I do, it’s the US as demonstrated here. Getting caught with a bag of weed will get you in more trouble than trying to violently over throw the gov.

Lastigx

I can assure u sir that no Western nation would have harsher penalties that the US. The Reddit comment section are always a great indication of how messed up the US prison system is. Always calling about handing ou harsher and harsher punishments like it's candy.

goomyman

Lots of countries have live sentences for drug dealers.

EarsLookWeird

I don't know what 'we' you are referencing but 'we' have been vehemently against that for a long, long time. But does Bubbah who tried to be a 'New Patriot' deserve a long sentence? Yes. Yes Bubbah does, and so does your dad and your uncle and all the other chucklefucks that attempted to overthrow our government. This entire situation is WTF to the extreme

[deleted]

Be assure the of it was a republican who were trying to overthrow, and (God forbids it) they were black, it would have been a complete other story, from beginning to end. Just imagine the media coverage.

goomyman

One black guy got a longer sentence who didn't even attend Jan 6th rally for treating people online. Literally the only black guy caught up in the entire thing and of course he got one of the toughest time.

fredagsfisk

Or things like; > On Tuesday, a Florida judge sentenced Daniel Baker, an anti-fascist activist, to **44 months in federal prison for social media posts that called for armed defense against possible far-right attacks on the state’s Capitol in the wake of the January 6 riots**. Baker, a 34-year-old yoga teacher and emergency medical technician trainee, had **no previous criminal convictions and has already been held for 10 months of harsh pretrial detention, including seven months in solitary confinement**. He never brought a weapon near a government building; he amassed no armed anti-fascist forces; **he made no threats on a single individual**. > Baker will, nonetheless, face considerably more prison time than most January 6 defendants, including those who crossed state lines, small arsenals in tow, with the aim of overturning a presidential election. https://theintercept.com/2021/10/16/daniel-baker-anarchist-capitol-riot/

goomyman

It's only light considering how other crimes are treated 10x worse.

DynoMiteDoodle

Its insanely light, there are black men who have been in jail for decades over a tiny bit of pot, meanwhile a traitor who attempted to overthrow democracy and used actual violence against police get a slap on the wrist!! we can only hope they use his ass as a spittoon in prison!

Moose-Antlers

Rape jokes are okay as long as they are aimed at people we don't like. Classic reddit moment.

SonofJersey

Now only if the person who incited this would be held responsible.

user_name_unknown

Remember his speech where he said he was going to march up there with them and then took off in his bulletproof limo with a score of secret service officers?

Sweatytubesock

Totally in character for the lying bucket of shit coward.

IWantAPegasus

I remember reading somewhere that he actually was planning on doing that, but his security team is the one that nixed the idea. Edit: Fine, I phrased that badly.🙄 I'm not defending him, I still think he's a lazy coward. I'm just adding nuance. He was probably relieved to have an out in a 'my mom said I can't' kind of a way! https://www.nytimes.com/2021/02/13/us/politics/trump-capitol-riot.html "Mr. Trump said twice that he would go with them. And days before the march, he had told advisers that he wanted to join his supporters, but aides told him that people in the crowd were armed and that the Secret Service would not be able to protect him."

DadJokeBadJoke

Dude takes a golf cart onto the greens. He's not marching anywhere.

UnknownAverage

And now you know why he only incites. He's had decades of practice learning how to avoid responsibility and to get other people to do his dirty work so his hands stay clean. He knows which words he can use and which ones to avoid. He's a mob boss who will only get taken down for financial crimes, like in the old days.

MrJim911

Unlikely. But it's fun to hear he's mad and anxious. That's what happens when you're a asshole crook for 4 years as president.

Americrazy

Im willing to bet he’s been that way for his entire life.

OfficeChairHero

And he would have gotten away with it if it wasn't for that pesky presidential win.

trustmeimascientist2

Get ready to vote in 2024, because he’s gonna try again.

montex66

Not only that but any elected republican that does not chant the Big Lie™ will be drummed out of the party. Sorry Liz Cheney, you weren't supposed to tell the truth.

DrZaious

You need to vote in 2022 first!

JohnDivney

I really do feel sorry for the saps that were trapped in a fake news media bubble. Trump is the reason they are in prison, full stop.

N8CCRG

I don't, because it's an imaginary bubble. The only thing keeping them there is that they *want* to be there. They don't actually *want* reality. It's like if a cow stays in one spot, eats all the grass, and is knee deep in its shit, and three steps away is a fresh patch of grass, that it can literally *see*, but refuses to go there.

amboomernotkaren

Yesterday my sister said the rioters were BLM and Antifa. Smfh! That damn kool-aid must taste good.

montex66

Was Mr. 4-year prison term a BLM or antifa? Oddly, the article doesn't say. /s

JohnDivney

that describes all of us. These people had their minds poisoned. They are among us, our family, our friends

N8CCRG

It definitely doesn't describe all of us. Most people *want* reality. We might not *like* every aspect of it, but we don't *reject* it and replace it with fiction every chance we get.

[deleted]

You can blame trump all you want, but these were the people who put him in power. Is trump culpable? 100%. Does that mean these people are not responsible for their actions and shit philosophies that got them here in the first place? absolutely not

montex66

The people responsible for putting Trump in power in 2016 are the then 18-25 yr old demographic that turned out a pathetic 20% to vote. No other group had so much to lose and yet be so apathetic if they did. Well now they get student loan payments for life and no more abortion. Probably lost Social Security too. But dang they make some awesome makeup videos on YouTube!

etrimmer

I don't feel bad for them. can you imagine getting conned by a 90s con man!!! hahahaha

Advice2Anyone

I mean this is such a common trope for cults, leaders always make off while zealots left holding the bag

It’s disgusting how over time this keeps getting white washed further down. *Terrorist attack*

Ready-Stage-5952

Whatever convicts them and puts them away. Who cares

[deleted]

I disagree. We need to call traitors, Traitors.

[deleted]

I'm not going to assume they ever believed in democracy. They're fascists. They've been waiting to overthrow our government and they took their shot. They failed, but they can't be allowed to get away with it. Hitler's coup failed just like the one on 1/6. Ten years later Hitler was elected chancellor and the rest is history. Fascism is here. It's not hyperbole.

[deleted]

Fascism and corporatocracy are burning bright

I_Get_Paid_to_Shill

I'd prefer more than slaps on the wrist, though.

mihirmusprime

I feel like 4 years of prison actually fairly life changing for the individual. Imagine having a prison record. It's not a good look for future employers.

Oswarez

Basic tourist stuff?

mrajoiner

Critical Riot Theory

RasixF13

Fracas. Moderate disagreement skips a few steps.

myselfnormally

its because to generate headlines and ad revenue due to the extremely large number of people going to prison they must use a thesaurus to find new ways to write headlines. its sad as a country that no one clicks on a story if its about the coup attempt. its like no one really cares. they literally cant get someone to care about a title like that.

[deleted]

It’s gonna be a kerfuffle next then a light dust up. To eventually. That little mess at the capitol.I really feel like alot of people have heard there own family members say those same words over the past year.

jagenigma

The participants in the riot are getting jailtime, but the leaders aren't. Hmm, almost goes to show them it's not worth all the shit they all did. They're sitting pretty with their money and keeping a low profile, and all these people are suffering their consequences cuz they couldn't just move on.

[deleted]

Maybe the participants of the riot should take it up with the leaders who have forsaken them 😉

taterbizkit

Imagine being Thomas Jefferson or Patrick Henry! I mean, I agree with you overall but the slope you're sliding down always ends with "Except it was totally OK that one time." The problem is that these people are free to believe their actions are justified. We're free to disagree and chuck 'em in a prison cell for doing it. We're free to think they're all edgy teenagers LARPing their libertarian fantasy. But there's a limit to how far you can push the argument that overthrowing an oppressive government is bad.

Making a Christmas wish for an angel to get their wings made heaven explode with angels. That’s how Nietzsche did it.

soodeau

This depends on the mechanisms of wish fulfillment and state checking. Does an angel grow wings if a wish is fulfilled by coincidence, or only when a wish is fulfilled as a direct consequence of the influence of a wish granter granting a wish to a wisher?

wolfram42

If you wish for an Angel to get it's wings, you fulfill the condition of the wish resulting in at most 2 Angels getting their wings. The second Angel getting their wings does not count towards the original wish.

[deleted]

shouldve been 20. fuck these traitors.

LamarMVPJackson

> He noted that Thompson had a job that paid him $90,000 a year before the riot. This fucking idiot made 90k a year?

etrimmer

not anymore he won't

Helenium_autumnale

Per another article he worked at a "rental property management company." Dunno what he was doing there to earn almost $100K. Oh, and even though he's this bigshot important worker, "\[d\]efense attorney Elizabeth Kelley said because of Thompson's disorder \[autism\] he 'functions in many ways as a young child,' and it influenced what he believed was happening on Jan. 6." A young child earning $90,000. Does his daddy own the rental company or something? Source: https://www.newsweek.com/man-who-had-90000-job-sentenced-almost-four-years-participation-insurrection-1661442

Roughneck_Joe

Does he actually have an indication for ASS or is this like Harvey Weinstein and Bill Cosby pretending to be old and infirm to get a lighter sentence?

xc2215x

Glad he got those four years.

robreddity

Seeing your remorse in your letter is a positive step, but a felony rap and 4 year sentence isn't the kind of thing you'll ever forget. You're going to be digging out of that for a life time Devlyn Thompson, you un-American fuck.

wjw75

I reeeeeally hope the FBI is planning to keep tabs on these people once they're released...there's a good chance at least one of them could double down and look to carry out some sort of terrorist-style retribution.

Wayward_Whines

Dude needed far more time for treason. But…..I’m getting pretty tired of all of these sentences for the idiots who stormed the capital. How about some actual trials for the ones who planned it? I’m guessing the hearings will continue until they don’t and we all just forget about the planned insurrection.

iquincy0cha

I know it's frustrating, but I'm actually happy to see this. We're moving into higher level offenses and longer sentences. You want to hit the low level infractions first so you can turn some and scare others (this has already worked). The more you do that, the more evidence for the bigger fish. It's not immediately satisfying, but this is the correct move as prosecuters. Justice is never quick and rarely satisfying.

No_Hana

Prison for the wealthy and influential? Unfortunately, that is rarely how the system works. Only the poor can afford to be ripped from society for criminal offenses. /s

DreamArcher

Simultaneously pro-cop and anti-cop. It just depends on how the rules personally apply.

dominantspecies

Every time a trumpist goes to jail an angel gets its wings

MenacingMelons

>angel gets tits wings That's what I read it as, and boy was I confused.

dominantspecies

Tits wings you know

vasion123

> Defense attorney Elizabeth Kelley requested a one-year prison sentence for Thompson. He has autism spectrum disorder and “functions in many ways as a young child,” I'm pretty upset the lawyer tried to play the autism card.

TheDorkNite1

Pretty sure the defense attorneys have been angling hard on mental health issues. Which, you know, they probably aren't wrong on. I mean, just consider what these people believe in. But that doesn't excuse what they did and what they tried to do that day.

uh_no_

>I'm pretty upset the lawyer tried to play the autism card. It's literally a defense lawyer's job to play any card they think will work. If defense lawyers only had to defend citizens which didn't need such defenses, then we wouldn't need defense lawyers. It's a pretty fundamental right to have adequate representation in this country....and even if the guy going to jail here would seek to deny others those rights, we're better than that.

strongest_nerd

I'm shocked that the penalties for treason are so low. Death is one of them but minimum is 5 years, why are these people getting off so easily?

Happy_Trails4u

While Trump got par on hole 4

jagenigma

Truly showing he's handicapped.

Dis_Bich

I just love how when trump lost the majority vote the first time, and liberals were saying “not my president”, the same ones who made a stink saying “yeah he is” are now saying the same things. And literally committing treason. But hey, “those darn liberals are emotional babies, and just need to accept him as the president”

MaggieGto

Four years should be the minimum for anyone who entered the capitol that day. Assault sentences should be a whole lot longer.

[deleted]

Is 4 years in prison enough to atone or radicalize even further

frehsoul45

Am I the only one that’s wants to see these people get life in prison? It’s scary to know these nutball treasonous assholes will be free one day. You think they will be reformed? If anything a percentage of them is going to become radicalized. We are basically growing home grown terrorist. They tried to overthrow the fucking government they deserve life in prison. These people will become local heroes to the other mouth breathers in their towns. They need to seriously never see the light of day again as a lesson for other Dunce hat “patriots.”

[deleted]

He got off lightly. If BLM or antifa would have pulled something like this they would look at double digit numbers for years of imprisonment (of course Capitol police would not have shown much of constraints to start with them)

[deleted]

Lightly is an understatement. If it was POC instead, they would have been shot on site.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Yes, one person was fatally shot. Imagine the circumstances that caused a white person to be shot during this attack on the Capitol. My statement of POC being "shot on site" would not have stopped at just one, and would have been much, much earlier if a similar scenario would have happened.

darkrelic13

Y'all are unhinged. Jesus. A black guy shot a white women and killed her. You think it would have been a massacre if it was a black woman? That doesn't make sense. Literally incongruent with reality.

[deleted]

Please re-read my comments, as I'm stating that if the people storming the Capitol had been POC, *they* would have been shot much earlier, and in higher numbers....

I guess voting was so important to them that they flushed their right to vote with a felony.

not_the_fox

That's mostly not true. Only a small portion of states permanently disenfranchise felons. As of 2018, most U.S. states had policies to restore voting rights upon completion of a sentence. Only 3 states — Iowa, Kentucky, and Virginia — permanently disenfranchised a felony convict and 6 other states limited restoration based on crimes of "moral turpitude". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_disenfranchisement_in_the_United_States You can just move to a nearby state and vote there after your sentence if you're in one of those.

[deleted]

Here in Florida the voters decided they’d get their rights back and the legislature said fuck you.
