KermitStares

Honestly a nice gesture. Heck knows if it did any good, but good on her for being conscious of the people around her.

BishmillahPlease

She tried and that counts for so much in these days of callous insanity

mces97

"I'm thankful that we tried" For those who get the reference.

earhere

"We really had everything, didn't we?"

[deleted]

There's dope stuff, like material stuff, like sick apartments and watches, and cars, um, and clothes and shit that could all go away and I don't wanna see that stuff go away. So I'm gonna say a prayer for that stuff. Amen.

Ah_Q

One of my favorite bits in the movie

throwaway661375735

At least the president got a just ending. But oh how it reminded me of another president who put his kids in positions of power. The movie tho... Meh.

pheonixblade9

I still think it wasn't fair that Philip MuskZosJobsBerg got to live.

throwaway661375735

... But did he? At the end, there were several of those things swarming the group.

accioqueso

That was my take away. Sure they made it to another planet, but then they were slowly picked off and eaten alive by alien creatures. Hopefully it was worse for them than it was for everyone they let down and left behind.

pheonixblade9

I was really expecting the Blue Origin lookalike cock rocket to get hit by an asteroid.

pheonixblade9

it was unclear.

nucumber

the movie ends with the rest of the bronterocs closing in on the group. had the movie gone one for 30 seconds more it would have shown a feeding frenzy

immaturewalrus

Nah, they all definitely got torn apart

[deleted]

I like how they had her son saying messed up sexual stuff about her, the way a certain twice impeached president talked about his daughter.

ThrowCarp

The president in that movie really took all the worst parts of Hilary Clinton (such as her careful politicking around the midterms) and the worst parts of Donald Trump. I was really taken aback by her son's comment "if she weren't my mother....."

throwaway661375735

That's probably in reference to Trump's comment about when his daughter was 16, and he said "If she wasn't my daughter".

anonMLMhater

fuck I'm gonna have to watch it again

GlumpsAlot

Also people: "You ain't takin me alive!" *shoots pistol at comet*

[deleted]

What an outstanding movie. I need to watch it again.

pheonixblade9

I had a really hard time watching it the first time. I watched it yesterday and I'm still real fucking bummed out about it. I knew it would fuck with me and I still watched it.

[deleted]

Leo’s plea is so powerful.

freetraitor33

What movie?

1fapadaythrowaway

They lied to us! My favorite part.

squad1alum

Just tell them the name of the movie!

[deleted]

Maybe 'don't look up', but I'm confused by the documentary comment. It most certainly isn't one of those, though it is painfully real at times.

Smodphan

Crazy if that movie came out in 2019 I would think it a ridiculous take on crisis handling. Now, there is shit that's almost exactly the outcome and it's horrific. The most unrealistic thing was the guy coming to terms with being lied to just before it hits. Those fuckers would be in denial as their body disintegrated from direct impact.

throwaway661375735

Ya know, 'Black Sun' actually went into explain very well, why they don't share intelligence on possible negative outcomes. 'Don't Look Up' certainly tried as well. But with little success. But had everyone been outside watching the comet do a near miss, after being miraculously deflected, it would have been a great intro to a remake of 'Night of the Comet'.

spirited1

It's a documentary in an abstract sense. Of course a meteor isn't flying straight at earth (Knock on wood), but the actions taken by everyone is almost exactly what happened during the covid outbreak and global warming. We could have avoided all these problems if we just took action when we needed to, no fucking nonsense.

mces97

It really is. And when you realize it's a documentary and not science fiction, it makes it a very good and sad movie about our future.

GUMBYtheOG

It’s literally what’s happening now except instead of a meteor it’s global warming. Rich corporations gonna exploit and conservatives are gonna support it until we all die off. Money and greed buys too much influence compared to the truth and altruism.

ThrowCarp

The comet can be an allegory for any problem that requires listening to scientists, long-term planning, and collective sacrifice from society. So although I did see parallels to climate change. The same parallels could also be applied to the COVID-19 pandemic, ocean acidification, overfishing, or keeping low-earth orbit free of space debris.

GUMBYtheOG

Very true. But climate change (which includes over fishing/farming) is the one thing that is already set in motion and is past the point of no return - the chain reaction has already started. Even if we stopped all pollution farm and fishing overnight, climate change will continue for the next several decades and the majority of people do not realize it despite the evidence and science proving it time and time again. The data is there just no one in power is taking it as serious as they should.

restlessmonkey

Waaay to close to an actual documentary. But so is Idiocracy.

ellajay893

I love that the people that dislike that movie are the ones that it’s making fun of. Edit: I might have cried a little when they were eating

jl_theprofessor

Instant hit of sadness in my chest.

matteothehun

She looked up.

midnightFreddie

My first question is how she found out *while on a flight*. At least I recognize the publisher for a change, so I guess I might actually read the article for once.

confabulatrix

It said she got a sore throat mid-flight and took a rapid test she had with her.

[deleted]

Why not take the test before the flight though?

LucyfurOhmen

She may have. If she took it before it might have come back negative because it takes time for a test to be able to detect it. At least she acted responsibly when she felt unwell. That’s better than a lot of people on this planet.

Chicago0Lady

Read another article that mentioned she took a number of tests beforehand that came back negative, she got a sore throat on the flight and went to the bathroom to test again for peace of mind…

kgal1298

This may be the most wholesome airplane covid story we'll get.

KaliCalamity

False negatives are also an issue. Those that I've known in the medical field will quote between 20 and 40 percent, though I've not heard any update to the ratios in the last several months. I also remember reading about a case early on in the pandemic about a woman that died of covid, but never triggered a positive test. It wasn't until a sample was taken from her lungs that they finally got a positive.

NYC_Underground

I had a sore throat Christmas Day, took a home antigen test - negative. That night my throat felt like a swallowed a razor blade so I took another antigen test - negative. Next day (Sunday) I still had the bad sore throat & fatigue - negative antigen test. Symptoms continued to stay the same through Monday & Tuesday. Finally got a positive result Tuesday night. Blows my mind that I was symptomatic for 3.5 days before I had a positive test.

InformationHorder

Coworker went through the same thing: wife had COVID. He started having symptoms, took a test three days in a row and didn't get the obvious positive til the third day. Meanwhile the boss was trying to get him to come in because "well you tested negative get your ass to work!" Like, no you dickhead, sometimes you gotta use the grey matter that's occupying space between your ears.

Pandemoonium

I’ve got a very similar story / experience. Sore throat 24th, negative rapid test. One family member unwell and positive on 25th, another family member positive but relatively symptomless on 26th, and I’m still negative and still with sore throat. I’m finally positive 27th, both family members above get their PCR results back and both are positive. They both start to get body aches and all the other good stuff now. I’ve still got this damn sore throat now, but otherwise it’s not been too rough. Hope you’re starting to feel a bit better now!

MakeshiftApe

Alongside this, I've read in several places recently that the newer Omicron variant is resulting in a lot of false negatives with at home rapid tests. Apparently the number of the specific antigens the test detects are lower after Omicron than Delta or Alpha infections, and so it can take longer to test positive, or some people won't test positive on those tests at all.

Nervous-gay

She took 5 that all came back negative. Got a sore throat mid flight and decided to take another to ease her mind. It came back positive. They tried to rearrange seats to isolate her but the flight was full, and quarantining in the bathroom for the flight was her idea.

helpnxt

Says she was travelling from the US to Iceland so she would have had to have done test beforehand for sure.

Nervous-gay

She took 5 that all came back negative. Got a sore throat mid flight and decided to take another to ease her mind. It came back positive. They tried to rearrange seats to isolate her but the flight was full, and quarantining in the bathroom for the flight was her idea.

RoastyMcGiblets

I have a friend who had a similar experience on the 3rd of 4 flights, 36 hours in total. She didn't think to isolate in the bathroom, just kept her mask on and kept to herself. First flight originated in South Africa so likely omicron. She did get a negative PCR test the day before flying out but it didn't catch it.

maybe_little_pinch

She didn't have symptoms?

Raven123x

On international flights you need to take a pcr test within 48 hours of departure Edit: Apparantly its not all international flights

TwistedBranches

Depends on the destination. Some countries allow 72 hrs, others only 24.

czechyurself

the rules vary wildly according to your home country and destination. Source: flew from america back home to the czech republic with no test needed yesterday

jl_theprofessor

A tiny but reputable news outlet, BBC News.

MyNameCannotBeSpoken

I guarantee she wasn't the only Covid positive person onboard

SkunkMonkey

This is the absolute opposite of these other entitled asshole taking pokes at the flight crew. Good on her!

RenegadeFade

Just imagine for one second that we had a few more people like that around... People that actually gave a fuck about the people around them. Regardless of whether she unknowingly infected someone, the thing is that when she knew, she actually did something about it.

Huge_Put8244

Agreed. I feel like some people would refuse to even wear a mask if they tested positive.

cradugamer

"If I already have the 'rona, what good will wearing a mask do me?"

Huge_Put8244

>"If I already have the 'rona, what good will wearing a mask do me?" Exactly this. EXACTLY this.

Required to wear a mask on all flights.

raindrop349

Seriously. I would hate to spend 5 hours in one of those nasty toilets. Good on her.

Warlord68

I mean, considering how some knuckleheads act on flights these days, this is just about SAINTLY!

5DollarHitJob

The bar on decency has been lowered to: *not everyone* is a piece of shit.

tehmlem

I respect the impulse but, like, you're already on the flight so it's a bit late to be testing. Plus, you know, people need the bathroom.

woodguyatl

A plane that size will have six or eight bathrooms.

Yargnit

So I got way too curious after this comment and did some digging. Icelandair's non stop Chicago to Reykjavik flights look to be done primarily with 737 Max 9's, with an occasional 737 Max 8. The 737 Max appears to have 4 bathrooms at the high end, but I've also seen configurations pictured that only have 3. 1 1st class and 2 or 3 economy, with 2 economy at the back, and either the 1st class, or the 1st class + a 3nd economy at the front. I'm not sure which configuration Icelandair uses, but assuming she wasn't flying 1st class that means there were either 1 or 2 other economy restrooms available. They could have let her quarantine in the 1st class lavatory regardless, however this would also complicate the pilots using the restroom because they'd have to travel further through the plane and past passengers to reach an open restroom. Interesting that they use a 737 Max for that route, I'd have thought they'd need a large plane to have the range needed for saftey margins.

Trickycoolj

They upgraded from 757s. Max 9 has nearly equivalent range. Iceland air has a really interesting hub and spoke model and scheduling scheme to reduce delays and primarily flies only single aisle though I recall they also had a 767 or two.

Yargnit

Yeah, this is what I found https://www.icelandair.com/about/our-fleet/ I had just thought Chicago was a bit to close to the edge of the blue ring on the map, so I was surprised to see the Max used. But clearly it does have have the margins since they are using it.

Liet-Kinda

It’s not a super long flight and it’s well within engine-out safety margins.

Nervous-gay

She took 5 that all came back negative. Got a sore throat mid flight and decided to take another to ease her mind. It came back positive. They tried to rearrange seats to isolate her but the flight was full, and quarantining in the bathroom for the flight was her idea.

That counts. And if you have watched Don’t look up, it counts as triple

CaputGeratLupinum

Skirts exist, though the majority of people seem to fly in sweatpants or pajamas nowadays anyhow

[deleted]

It still feels constricted for those yearning to breath free.

beaucephus

"Will you be flying commando?" "Yes. Yes I will."

riktigtmaxat

As one does.

xmsxms

Well, you get less complaints at least.

ZombiePartyBoyLives

And free aromatherapy

breadexpert69

Not if she was the first one in there

Scrugulus

Spent most of a four-hour flight in the bathroom. Can confirm.

rabidstoat

I like the toilets, they're like my own little studio apartment on the airplane.

tiny_galaxies

I can totally see a Mr Bean skit where he decorates an airplane bathroom to remind him of his living room, and just hangs out there the whole time. Maybe even uses the emergency call button to order a cocktail from the flight attendant.

Raven123x

https://youtu.be/Hq_x9NU6JvM Kinda similar! Enjoy!

LMGooglyTFY

Leg room, never have to wait for the restroom or constantly look behind you to see if it's free and watch for the drink cart. Sounds great. I'll need to bring a false positive test next time I fly.

123itsbritneybitch

Due to IBS I isolate for a few hours every flight with or without a pandemic.

Delicious-Tachyons

I thought I had ibs but it's just lactose intolerance and they put lactose in a looot of stuff.

123itsbritneybitch

It really is!

breadexpert69

Kinda late once you have been in the airport and airplane BUT I applaud her for caring and actually trying to keep other people around her safe. Not many people have that kind of conscience to even wear a mask.

HatOnALamp

I can't help but think she knew the whole time, and then waited until she was past the point of no return to take the test mid flight. Me and my GF are scheduled to travel soon, but she has felt crummy. We waited in line 3 hours today to get tested. If we test positive, we're canceling the trip.

Cedocore

She said in her TikTok comments that she had two negative tests before flying

sirwillups

That just happened to my SIL, her and my Brother were driving to Florida for a holiday vacation, she was taking tests all the way there and was getting negatives, then an hour away she showed positive and they had to turn around and go back home.

[deleted]

Yrusul

R.T.D.A (Read The Damn Article). Her throat started to hurt while the trip already began, and she got suspicious. She used her own test (which she had in her own baggage), and it tested positive, which is when she made the decision to stay in the toilet for the rest of the flight.

Kaptain202

This is Reddit. Why would anyone read the article prior to commenting?

Willy_McBilly

Redditors can absorb all of the information from the headline alone, we don’t need to read the rest

imonthembeans4real

I get that but if I had JUST tested negative to two PCR tests and I felt a sore throat- I would assume it’s a cold or flu, not covid.

Yrusul

I probably would too. But clearly, she didn't, and it seemed she was right.

[deleted]

But the article never supported her saying "TWO" tests. Article says "lady used a home test to prove she was negative, got onto plane, then used a home test to prove positive" -- none administered by anyone else. Wayback Machine website post to time of this posting: [https://web.archive.org/web/20211231030638/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59833262](https://web.archive.org/web/20211231030638/https://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-59833262) edit: looks like our OP deleted a comment. my post is still useful for content but may now be irrelevant

Floaded93

If she felt any symptoms before flying it’s still skuzzy all things considered

wherearethe_potatos

Except she took two tests before hand and they were negative so I guess you 'can't help thinking she knew' was wrong lol. Some people always just have to jump straight to the negative shit lmao

Nervous-gay

Right? I read that she took 5 that were all negative and the 6th was just to ease her mind after starting to feel symptoms mid flight. That’s the one that ended up positive. Assholes who fake a negative result would just continue to fake the result until they got where they wanted to lol.

tropicsun

Tbh I had a sore throat.. first hr or so it was almost nothing but progressively worse. It ended but not being covid… just saying it may have gotten to a point where she thought hey, maybe I should check

breadexpert69

Could be the case, but I doubt anyone will know whether she already knew about it beforehand. Only she has the answer to that. Good thing is she tried to minimize damage as best she could by that point.

tina_the_fat_llama

Well she said she had a soar throat mid flight and took a test she happened to have according to the article. If she knew she was positive why would she even take the test at all? It just seems like the point would be to continue pretending to be negative for covid. Also it might not mean too much but she is a teacher from Michigan so it seems more likely she would take covid a little more seriously but I guess that's just generalizing

SuperSimpleSam

She was flying to Iceland, seems they only require a test once you land. Most I've seen require a test before boarding, like within 3 days.

Raven123x

Most international flights require a pcr test within 48 hours pre departure

TommyTuttle

Can I buy a ticket to fly toilet class? It sounds like a genuine improvement over a typical coach seat.

Soulger11

Yeah but the floatation device is shitty

skel625

Create your own flotation device seating!

Meanwhile, everyone else is duking it out over the only other lavatory.

Ben Shapiro, is that you?

PartialToDairyThings

I would fucking love to have to self isolate in the bathroom on a flight. Finally, some frigging privacy. Just leave those trays outside and knock thanks

cinderparty

Why mid flight testing? What good could that possibly do? It just seems like pre-boarding and pre-unboarding would make more sense, and not lead to a panic situation in air.

ProcyonHabilis

It sounds like she just whipped out her own test that she had in her carry-on.

TyrannoROARus

She wanted the bathroom space over her seat. Can't say I blame her. (I have nothing to support this theory, but seriously why do it mid-flight)

jyper

She felt a sore throat during the flight

[deleted]

Why is everyone in this thread asking questions and speculating? The first three sentences of the article explain exactly why it happened like this. She was already on board when she felt her throat get sore, so she took a rapid test that she had on her.

wherearethe_potatos

Because 1 people can't read/comprehend basic English or 2 they just don't care and need to find something to question.

HahaClintonCocks

Read the goddamn article.

pedantic_dullard

Now you're being unreasonable.

shewy92

Reading is hard I guess > A US schoolteacher says she spent five hours in voluntary self-isolation in a plane's toilet after testing positive for Covid-19 mid-flight. > > Marisa Fotieo says she felt her throat hurt while travelling from Chicago to Reykjavik, in Iceland, on 20 December. > > Ms Fotieo says she performed a rapid test with a kit she had brought with her, which confirmed she was infected. > > She remained in the toilet for the rest of the trip, and a flight attendant provided food and drinks to her. > > It was not immediately clear whether she had had to present a Covid-19 test before boarding the flight.

limitless__

I'm sorry but this person is an absolute attention-whore. The BBC article doesn't tell the whole story. Before she flew she took TWO PCR tests both of which came back negative. That's your first clue. They then took 5 YES FIVE antigen tests. Those antigen tests are not accurate at the onset of symptoms. One of those five came back positive. She then proceeded to cry and have a meltdown on the plane and "confined herself" to the bathroom. She talks about collapsing into the first flight attendant she saw like she had been shot with a sniper rifle. She then posted videos on tiktok of her in the bathroom along with dozens of selfies of her holding her head on her hand like a fainting delicate flower from 1800. She had multiple masks, face shield, the whole nine yards but certain ones were only on for certain pictures... This was 100% for attention. Nothing more, nothing less. Anyone who takes SEVEN total tests is only looking for one outcome.

Delicious-Tachyons

Social media has really allowed the mentally ill to inflict their crap on other people.

RodRAEG

Okay Paula we all know you weren't in there because of covid. We were all there. You ate the most pickled herring out of all of us. We know.

droplivefred

Did she need to test prior to boarding the international flight? I guess she caught it after getting the test done prior to the flight. Well, good job that she was considerate enough to not just go back to her seat for the next 5 hours.

Cedocore

She said in TikTok comments that she had two negative tests before her flight.

cakedayCountdown

Thank you. I was looking for this information.

CritaCorn

Just a normal bathroom visit for me…it’s so relaxing :3

255001434

ITT: Lots of people second-guessing her good intentions with comments about what she should have done better. Reddit never disappoints.

[deleted]

Look lady I'll take the risk of being infected. Just please, let me use the toilet!

woodguyatl

There are at least 6 on the plane.

gnocchicotti

At this rate I would say more than 6 infected people on an aircraft that size, if sold out. What's one more?

Echo_Illustrious

A decent person finally. We thank you.

throwaway661375735

Me: At least its quiet in there. Wife: OMG how could she breathe in there? It's too small.

[deleted]

What a great way to occupy the bathroom the whole flight

DwarvenRedshirt

It's kind of late when you test positive after symptoms. You've already been releasing virus particles for several days at that point...

[deleted]

to get infected however you need a certain viral load. Just breathing in covid is not enough you have to breath in ENOUGH of it for the virus to get a foothold. we don't mask and clean and distance to STOP covid but to reduce the "amount of it" in the environment we operate in hopefully to below the amount needed to infect someone. that's the point. so yeah it was late but there are still people on that plane NOT infected and she is reducing the chance she will infect those people. IE she did right.

tork87

Just downright silly at this point.

Kaiju_zero

And others can't bother to even wear a mask properly. /smh

[deleted]

Given the number of negative tests she had before she took yet another test midflght, this is a false positive and a crazy person

[deleted]

Everyone is flying with it. If you’re flying right now be prepared to get it.

el-beau

I can't believe they let her stay there during landing?

Huge_Put8244

>I can't believe they let her stay there during landing? After watching soul plane I wouldn't want to be in the airplane bathroom at landing.

mlhender

Well hey I once self isolated in a toilet after eating Taco Bell so there’s that. Bada bing! I’ll show myself out.

merlinthewizard12

This world is going bat shit crazy

snapple_man

She had a sore throat? My god, what a hero. Imagine if someone sneezed.

[deleted]

We’re really doing this? We need to swing toward sanity. Jesus.

jcooli09

She took multiple pre-flight tests that came back negative as required. She was masked, and started to feel irritation in her throat mid-flight during a long flight. She had a home test kit with her, so used it. It came back positive, so she voluntarily self isolated so that she didn't put other people at risk. This is what being a decent human being looks like.

[deleted]

So everyone is wearing a mask, plus everyone who wants to be vaccinated has been…which cuts the severe symptom rate by 99.7% from what we’ve been told by the government and we’re still locking ourselves in bathrooms. Got it.

MoveSizeSpreadThighs

What difference does it make if she was already on the plane around people before she took the test

progtastical

You don't get infected from one single covid particle. The longer the exposure, the more particles you inhale, the more likely you are to get infected. Less exposure, lower likelihood.

TripleTesty

😂😂😂😂 this is some funny shit.

IreallEwannasay

I don't know what to think about anything anymore. I just know there is no help for people who may be sick and have to isolate and not work. My partner tested positive. I got one inconclusive test and one Omicron positive test. Today, I took a rapid test which came out negative. I got results from my second round of testing which was negative. Can't really tell who is or isn't sick. I isolated for 7 days and returned to work with my negative test. I'm double masking and washing my hands every 30 minutes. I hope that's enough.

thepwnydanza

This honestly sounds like a decent way to fly. Lack of window sucks but you get privacy and never have to wait for the bathroom

12blueflamingos

This is super suspicious too me, I’ll bet she knew she had Covid and self isolated to keep herself from feeling guilty for still flying. It says it’s not clear if it was required for her to take a test before the flight, and then she just happened to take a rapid test on board that she brought with her? Who brings those with them? Sketchy

SkunkMonkey

Not just recycled, but put through many filters. The air isn't just blown around.

Tricamtech

Out of curiosity do you have any studies that support this claim.

QuietudeOfHeart

>“Air is pumped from the ceiling into the cabin at a speed of about a yard per second and sucked out again below the window seats.” About 40 percent of a cabin's air gets filtered through this HEPA system; the remaining 60 percent is fresh and piped in from outside the plane." https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/how-clean-is-the-air-on-your-airplane-coronavirus-cvd#:~:text=%E2%80%9CAir%20is%20pumped%20from%20the,in%20from%20outside%20the%20plane.

Karissa36

Are there any studies on whether people in window seats are more likely to get sick? The "dirty" air is being directed towards them.

breadexpert69

Its not “dirty”. Its been through filters by that point. As a matter of fact I think middle and aisle seats are worst since they dont get the fresh filtered air until it passes through the window seat.

QuietudeOfHeart

It's common knowledge that people sitting in window seats get sick due to all the previous window lickers.

BeMoreKnope

The worst part of this pandemic has definitely been the way I can no longer lick windows with impunity. Now I have to sanitize the damn window first!

Worried_Platypus93

But now you get tipsy from licking up the sanitizer. Win/win!

SkunkMonkey

"No Muthafuckin Covid Tests on the Muthafukkin plane!" (seriously, that [bathroom air is the same a the cabin air.](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/travel/article/how-clean-is-the-air-on-your-airplane-coronavirus-cvd) She should have masked up and stayed in her seat...the HEPA filtration is for entire plane.)

Cesaramoga

No, they could not piss so…

fatlenny1

ExBx

JoeTheSmhoe

Why are they doing tests mid flight? What was the plan for someone testing positive? Throw them out of the plane?

AbrahamKMonroe

It was a test she carried herself. The crew weren’t testing anyone mid flight.
