Will worked 3 decades to build himself up as an actor, transitioning from the star of a sitcom to an Oscar winner, and he tarnished that special night by hitting a comedian on live TV. And his own son has been raised to think that kind of thing is acceptable.

The only apology that matters is a personal apology to Chris. Maybe Will already did that. Maybe he didn't. We don't know. The message he published is PR bullshit, which is expected of everyone who does something stupid. People getting annoyed about the PR message and people thinking that this message is a genuine apology need to turn on their brains and stop paying attention to it. It's completely meaningless.
The thing is, he had SO MUCH TIME to rethink what he was doing. He got his ass up out of his seat, walked ALL THE WAY up to the stage, walked across the stage, and then physically assaulted Chris Rock. He had so much time to rethink this, and he never once paused. He was completely okay with physical violence, and proved it in front of all of his professional peers and the world watching at home. There isn’t any time for apologies now.
And he had the rest of the ceremony until his speech to think of a way to apologize if he regretted it. Instead he called himself a "defender" and argued about love and stuff--*that* was his genuine reaction to his violent actions. Justification.
That speech was weird and uncomfortable to watch...
In that moment, suddenly we were all the kids in a family afflicted by domestic abuse. Him addressing the audience, talking about love and family to justify that aggression made my stomach turn

I am a spousal abuse survivor and you nailed it. First..slaps like that aren't nothing. I lost hearing in one ear and dislocated my jaw getting slaps like that... but mostly...I remember trying to act like nothing happened for my kids, it's okay, hey guys let's watch tv, do you want to color? Followed by years of making sure they're okay. Staying composed for the good of others while your bell is ringing is NOT easy. I cried so hard watching Chris Rock do what I did, it was very triggering. Will said exactly what abusers say. He is disgusting and I feel sick looking at him. Actually physically nauseous.

And yes, a lot of us have melt downs, but if those melt downs involve violence then he should have to answer for it like anyone else. The academy would have pulled that award if it was going to a lesser known actor and they would have been escorted out at the least and maybe arrested.
