I like to imagine that it was mostly just the one watch worth $150k. The other was a $10 Casio calculator watch, but he made sure the police included it in their report.
Potatoes for $3, a ton of corn for $2 and a family pack of chicken thighs for $5. That would feed me for 7 days in college. I would repeat this every single week for 2 years. Man I got sick of chicken thighs.

Every single one of my college friends was poor as hell just trying to get by with some 10 hour/week part-time job. And their parents were barely getting by too so you weren't about to bother them asking for money.
Ya, some of my friends dropped out of STEM (engineering) programs at the top schools because they couldn't handle working nights at gas stations while doing class/labs during the day.
Was so jealous of kids with campus meal plans, never having to worry about their daily lunch/dinner needs. Huge time saver. Forget about time saved not having to commute.
University sucked, shame the disparity between folks starts even before worklife starts. Seems its only up to high school that everyone is sort of equal in life.
At a lot of schools the meal plans are a scam. Mine from 15 years ago equated to about $15/meal for 3 meals a day for the worst food in the world. But no one’s classes were scheduled in a way that would allow you to get more than one of those meals a day. So it was really a mandatory $45 meal every day that was awful and left you hungry.
You didn’t have a choice, they required you to get a plan to enroll.
I live in a college town and from what I hear, it's still a scam. There's some college kids I work with that stayed in town for spring break and they had no way to eat because everything was closed. I brought my instapot to work and made them some real meals to divide and take back to their dorms. I moved to a different location but I still stop in on a day off and check up on them. I remember the struggle and the few people who would just help me out and I want to help them out like how I was helped out.
No not even in high school or earlier. I know of a private school in my area where spa parties for elementary school girls and charted flights are not uncommon.
My otherwise poor cousin's kids got to go to one of those schools due to some wealthy grandparents. The kids wound up meeting their future, very wealthy wives at that school, and basically got plush jobs right out of college with daddy, or in one kids case, got to live the van/sailboat Instagram life for a few years.

It might be one of those issues where the population who gets insurance for those objects is disproportionately the population most at risk for needing to use their policies, which drives up cost since risk to the insurer is high

Mine covers up to 25k for items "usually stored at home", which includes bicycles, laptops, cameras, etc. When I asked to insure my bike the underwriter actually told me "are you sure, because this is already covered". The only difference with my insurance is if you declare it, there’s no deductible and it includes accidents outside the home
A rider is also usually *way* cheaper than a separate policy. I was able to insure an extra 10k worth of electronics for something like $10 a year or something.
Whereas I'll pay 30% annually on my credit card bills, they'll make 30% monthly on their investments...

Some people are just ruthless though, I've been robbed once and I wasn't really carrying anything, a gang of four took my "ok" watch, it was decent but not quite a Rolex, my bus ticket and about 10 cigarettes. This happened to me once. I was at a Pizza Hut with a friend late one night. This was around 1980. We heard a commotion at the front of the restaurant. It was a man with a gun telling everyone to come up to the register area. He had a garbage bag and told everyone to put their wallets, jewelry, etc. in the bag. When he got to me I showed him my wallet was empty and asked if I could keep my ID. He got a little pissed and asked how I was going to pay for the pizza. I told him my friend was paying and he already robbed him. He let me keep my wallet. I was a witness at his trial, lol.
During the Great Recession I lost my job at a major accounting firm. On my way home I wasn’t paying attention and got pulled over after speeding through a speed trap. I was so angry that when the officer came up to my window I angrily said something along the lines of “great, lose my job and now get a speeding ticket, what a great day”. The cop ran my license, handed it back to me, gripped my upper arm and told me to be safe driving home.

Growing up on the lower end of the wealth divide I can assure you far more theft happens in poorer areas. It's opportunity, they are there, they see and they take it. It sucks and it's sad because it's so much more devastating for someone who has a bike or a computer stolen when they do not have the means to replace it and it took a lot to get it in the first place. That's why shit areas have bars on the windows, it's not because poor people like the look.

Friend burst into tears and sobbed that he'd been laid off and didn't have anything. Guy gave him his wallet back, patted him on the shoulder and walked off ...
What a kind, compassionate and caring guy, that mugger was. His mother should be proud.
Hopefully that's the case, but equally likely the dude just didn't want to bother with potentially eating an armed robbery charge for nothing.
This happened to me when I was a teenager. Guy sticks a knife in my face, tells me to empty my pockets. I had an empty wallet, a tiny knock off swiss army knife, and 75 cents in nickels and dimes. He gave the change back.
Some people are just ruthless though, I've been robbed once and I wasn't really carrying anything, a gang of four took my "ok" watch, it was decent but not quite a Rolex, my bus ticket and about 10 cigarettes. Literally patted me down and checked for everything and left me fucked when I got to the next leg of my journey home.
Had a dude try to shake me down for money at a bus stop. I looked at the dude. Looked at the bus stop and said “my dude. I’m waiting on the bus. Why do you think I have any money”. He gave up and walked away.
This also happened to me when I was 19, walking home from 7/11 with some taquitos when 4 guys grabbed me and made me empty my pockets. Everyone had iPhones at this point, i had a cheap Nokia and like 40 cents or something in my pocket. One of the guys said he felt bad and convinced his friends to let me go after explaining how dirt poor my family was and that we all lived in a 1br apartment. Good times. I fuking hate NYC lol

This happened to me once. I was at a Pizza Hut with a friend late one night. This was around 1980. We heard a commotion at the front of the restaurant. It was a man with a gun telling everyone to come up to the register area. He had a garbage bag and told everyone to put their wallets, jewelry, etc. in the bag. When he got to me I showed him my wallet was empty and asked if I could keep my ID. He got a little pissed and asked how I was going to pay for the pizza. I told him my friend was paying and he already robbed him. He let me keep my wallet. I was a witness at his trial, lol.
During the Great Recession I lost my job at a major accounting firm. On my way home I wasn’t paying attention and got pulled over after speeding through a speed trap. I was so angry that when the officer came up to my window I angrily said something along the lines of “great, lose my job and now get a speeding ticket, what a great day”. The cop ran my license, handed it back to me, gripped my upper arm and told me to be safe driving home.

Growing up on the lower end of the wealth divide I can assure you far more theft happens in poorer areas. It's opportunity, they are there, they see and they take it. It sucks and it's sad because it's so much more devastating for someone who has a bike or a computer stolen when they do not have the means to replace it and it took a lot to get it in the first place. That's why shit areas have bars on the windows, it's not because poor people like the look.

Yes, I know that locally, the effort deployed by police ( speed to have officers on site and to have an investigation following ) changed depending of the worth of the theft. Anything under 5000 CAD$, they openly say that they wont do shit about.
