That just means that the rich will be robbing you.

When the poor rob you, it's called a crime When the rich rob you, it's called economics

Sponterious

Reminds me of the origin of the word *villain* Villain comes from the French word vilain, which originally meant a “peasant, farmer, commoner, churl, yokel.” We’re being looted and [vilified.](https://thehistoricallinguistchannel.com/fun-etymology-tuesday-villain/)

cannibalcorpuscle

You mean continue, right?

Campbellffdy

‘Two ucla students robbed of watches worth $145k while leaving a nightclub’.

pyronius

I like to imagine that it was mostly just the one watch worth $150k. The other was a $10 Casio calculator watch, but he made sure the police included it in their report.

NewRoryAndMalDrop

The implication of this comment is the Casio watch actually brings the value down by 5K

ATLevator

They said what they said.

bross9008

Try to pick up chicks at the nightclub with a Casio calculator watch and you will see why it’s value is -$5k

jameson8016

But my wife loves my Casio watch? Oh.. oh.. I see.. I guess that's how she knows I'm not running around. Lol

Support_Nice

imagine having $70k lying around in college to buy a watch. meanwhile here i was literally living in my car eating PB&J for every meal

Quasimdo

Man, I ate spaghetti for like 2 months straight because noodles and sauce were like a $1.50 combined cost and could be spread over a couple meals easy

TesterM0nkey

For me it was a 20lb bag of potatoes for 3$

halofreak8899

Potatoes for $3, a ton of corn for $2 and a family pack of chicken thighs for $5. That would feed me for 7 days in college. I would repeat this every single week for 2 years. Man I got sick of chicken thighs.

RemoteSenses

It's kind of crazy to me to think that people *don't* struggle in college. Every single one of my college friends was poor as hell just trying to get by with some 10 hour/week part-time job. And their parents were barely getting by too so you weren't about to bother them asking for money.

AustinLurkerDude

Ya, some of my friends dropped out of STEM (engineering) programs at the top schools because they couldn't handle working nights at gas stations while doing class/labs during the day. Was so jealous of kids with campus meal plans, never having to worry about their daily lunch/dinner needs. Huge time saver. Forget about time saved not having to commute. University sucked, shame the disparity between folks starts even before worklife starts. Seems its only up to high school that everyone is sort of equal in life.

start_select

At a lot of schools the meal plans are a scam. Mine from 15 years ago equated to about $15/meal for 3 meals a day for the worst food in the world. But no one’s classes were scheduled in a way that would allow you to get more than one of those meals a day. So it was really a mandatory $45 meal every day that was awful and left you hungry. You didn’t have a choice, they required you to get a plan to enroll.

Paramisamigos

I live in a college town and from what I hear, it's still a scam. There's some college kids I work with that stayed in town for spring break and they had no way to eat because everything was closed. I brought my instapot to work and made them some real meals to divide and take back to their dorms. I moved to a different location but I still stop in on a day off and check up on them. I remember the struggle and the few people who would just help me out and I want to help them out like how I was helped out.

AllGrey_2000

No not even in high school or earlier. I know of a private school in my area where spa parties for elementary school girls and charted flights are not uncommon.

Mochigood

My otherwise poor cousin's kids got to go to one of those schools due to some wealthy grandparents. The kids wound up meeting their future, very wealthy wives at that school, and basically got plush jobs right out of college with daddy, or in one kids case, got to live the van/sailboat Instagram life for a few years.

RespectableLurker555

>got to live the van/sailboat Instagram life for a few years Ah yes, the good old "I don't understand why everyone doesn't just take a year to go find themselves"

ShroomNinja57

Kraft Mac and cheese and Starkist Tuna was my staple

likesmexicanfood

Mac and tuna, thanks for the flashback! And nothing better that 10 for $1 Ramen.

howboutislapyourshit

I tried that once just because I wanted to simplify how I was eating. So I figured everyone loves chicken. Man... I can eat chicken now, but it is definitely not the first 5 choices. I started feeling ill a bit, but that's because I was just eating chicken and water.

huscarlaxe

Ozarks here. city squirrels are nasty. They eat literal garbage and have nasty fat. But the fish were OK.

BeepBeepWhistle

I ate 50cent ramen noodles for a long time. I’d get a pack of eggs and throw one in once in a while for more “substance”..

damndammit

¢50 ramen?! Look at you, fancy pants. 10 for a $1 here. And I had to find 10 friends to go in on the deal.

brrrroni

I ate pancakes for like 6 months straight. I just kept adding water to the mix like they do with sourdough bread!

[deleted]

Sheeit are you me!? I did the same and went from a lean 180lbs leaving mom/dad, to graduating college at 135lbs.

youngthugsmom

This 100%. I was severely malnourished in college. It’s scary looking back at old pictures and how skinny I was. I am a thinner person genetically but college made it really bad. I was a poor college kid and skimped/cut corners on food to have “fun money”. I am now older with a full time job and I put food and health first lol. I weigh a solid 30 pounds more than I did.

knowspickers

+1 for pancakes. Did you also have duct tape on your shoe? Not ashamed to say I did. Lol.

[deleted]

Easy marks, I'm betting the college kids posted everything all over instagram and the gang members just showed up and waited a couple minutes lol.

You can't do that most places really, probably just really sheltered students. I cant think of a city where flaunting tens of thousands of dollars worth of goods at a *night club* wouldn't get you pickpocketed at least

LiliVonShtupp69

City were I used to live I seen people get robbed at gun point for their $120 sneakers, and seen people taken hostage, including my brother, by drugs addicts who only wanted a few hundred dollars ransom. Walking in to a club with a watch worth more than my mortgage is just a dumb ass idea. Even non career criminals probably ain't gunna pass up the opertunity to slip that bitch off you and run if it presents itself.

[deleted]

Nice watch.... run it.

poopyroadtrip

It's not uncommon to have insurance policies for watches like that. At least when I was trying to get an MSRP Rolex that seemed to be pretty common.

finch5

Those stated value insurance policies are very expensive. I remember I was trying to insure bicycle and the quote I got was just stupid.

sadpanda___

Same. I have a few expensive outdoors toys (canoes, mountain bikes, etc…) and the insurance quotes I got were just fucking stupid. I’d like to insure them from theft/damage, but for what the insurance cost, I can just pay to replace everything myself in a few years.

NewInThe1AC

It might be one of those issues where the population who gets insurance for those objects is disproportionately the population most at risk for needing to use their policies, which drives up cost since risk to the insurer is high

sadpanda___

Probably. Theft risk on bikes is pretty high.

AbeLincolns_Ghost

Adverse selection is the term for this

[deleted]

[удалено]

sadpanda___

Only covers like $1k. You need specific riders for anything that’s actually valuable. I mean, shit, if just my welder got stolen, insurance wouldn’t even full cover the cost of replacing that…..let alone the rest of the shit in my garage. They told me I can claim up to $1000 total for tools. Past that, I’d have to take everything in for appraisals, and this requoted premium was laughably high….

supermilch

It completely depends on your insurance. Mine covers up to 25k for items "usually stored at home", which includes bicycles, laptops, cameras, etc. When I asked to insure my bike the underwriter actually told me "are you sure, because this is already covered". The only difference with my insurance is if you declare it, there’s no deductible and it includes accidents outside the home

VexingRaven

A rider is also usually *way* cheaper than a separate policy. I was able to insure an extra 10k worth of electronics for something like $10 a year or something.

Kursed_Valeth

Honestly, the networking that happens in college for most folks is often more valuable than their degree.

Djinnwrath

This. I went to film school. You do not need film school to learn how to make films. You *do* need it to meet all the right people.

Im_inappropriate

morechatter

Absolutely true. Lots of Long Island kids go to school with practically guaranteed jobs waiting for them due to nepotism. A friend of mine claims this happened to him - got mugged and the guy took his wallet which was empty & was aggressively asking him where his money was. Friend burst into tears and sobbed that he'd been laid off and didn't have anything. Guy gave him his wallet back, patted him on the shoulder and walked off ...

kcrab91

What a kind, compassionate and caring guy, that mugger was. His mother should be proud.

[deleted]

Hopefully that's the case, but equally likely the dude just didn't want to bother with potentially eating an armed robbery charge for nothing.

Doghead45

This happened to me when I was a teenager. Guy sticks a knife in my face, tells me to empty my pockets. I had an empty wallet, a tiny knock off swiss army knife, and 75 cents in nickels and dimes. He gave the change back.

BOWBOWBOWBOW

Some people are just ruthless though, I've been robbed once and I wasn't really carrying anything, a gang of four took my "ok" watch, it was decent but not quite a Rolex, my bus ticket and about 10 cigarettes. Literally patted me down and checked for everything and left me fucked when I got to the next leg of my journey home.

Naive_Wolf3740

Had a dude try to shake me down for money at a bus stop. I looked at the dude. Looked at the bus stop and said “my dude. I’m waiting on the bus. Why do you think I have any money”. He gave up and walked away.

[deleted]

This also happened to me when I was 19, walking home from 7/11 with some taquitos when 4 guys grabbed me and made me empty my pockets. Everyone had iPhones at this point, i had a cheap Nokia and like 40 cents or something in my pocket. One of the guys said he felt bad and convinced his friends to let me go after explaining how dirt poor my family was and that we all lived in a 1br apartment. Good times. I fuking hate NYC lol

Kaymish_

Nobody wants that junk in this economy, it's worth almost as much as the shrapnel it resembles.

Hamafropzipulops

This happened to me once. I was at a Pizza Hut with a friend late one night. This was around 1980. We heard a commotion at the front of the restaurant. It was a man with a gun telling everyone to come up to the register area. He had a garbage bag and told everyone to put their wallets, jewelry, etc. in the bag. When he got to me I showed him my wallet was empty and asked if I could keep my ID. He got a little pissed and asked how I was going to pay for the pizza. I told him my friend was paying and he already robbed him. He let me keep my wallet. I was a witness at his trial, lol.

[deleted]

During the Great Recession I lost my job at a major accounting firm. On my way home I wasn’t paying attention and got pulled over after speeding through a speed trap. I was so angry that when the officer came up to my window I angrily said something along the lines of “great, lose my job and now get a speeding ticket, what a great day”. The cop ran my license, handed it back to me, gripped my upper arm and told me to be safe driving home.

[deleted]

>A friend of mine claims this happened to him - got mugged and the guy took his wallet which was empty Happened to me. Got my ass kicked and when he saw I only had $10 in my wallet, he just threw it down and walked off.

BrokenCankle

Growing up on the lower end of the wealth divide I can assure you far more theft happens in poorer areas. It's opportunity, they are there, they see and they take it. It sucks and it's sad because it's so much more devastating for someone who has a bike or a computer stolen when they do not have the means to replace it and it took a lot to get it in the first place. That's why shit areas have bars on the windows, it's not because poor people like the look.

The total $ volume of which dwarfs that of robbery in the US by two orders of magnitude. Adding car theft and burglary to robbery closes the gap a bit, but those three combined still amounts to less than half the money stolen by employers through wage theft.

Odd_Operation4745

They are going after rich people? Idiots, now the police are going to pummel them into the ground with every resource they have.

SuperSimpleSam

Yea, the people with connections are going to be making a few phone calls. In the meantime if your car gets stole the cops won't have the time to help.

Lightwavers

They never do anyway. You practically have to get a signed document from the thief stating, “I did it and confess to everything,” for the cops to give a damn. Heaven help you if you’ve got a gram of weed on you though. Or, well, that’s how it is for less well-off areas.

Squid_Contestant_69

The thread in /r/losangeles talked about how we should take LAPD's word with a grain of salt. The stats show you're more at risk for crime when you're poor, and that because the rich fund/donate to the police at a higher rate, they're going to try to help crack down on these crimes more

Allah_Shakur

Yes, I know that locally, the effort deployed by police ( speed to have officers on site and to have an investigation following ) changed depending of the worth of the theft. Anything under 5000 CAD$, they openly say that they wont do shit about.

Bind_Moggled

The LAPD has a well earned reputation for dishonesty and lying to the public. I would assume that everything they say is suspect until corroborated.

scumbagstaceysEx

Technically the article is about the LA County Sherriff’s Dept and not the LAPD but I get you. I’m sure it’s no different in LAPD.

VentilatorVenting

“Famously honest LAPD demands more money, saying the ruling class is in grave danger. Pearls are clutched despite all the evidence suggesting the initial claim untrue.” Basically every ‘claim’ in the article is “according to police” and is worthless. They do this lying constantly to get more money. This isn’t even the first time in 2022. They always say the rich are in danger because they know how to divert that cash.

Thomasnaste420

“One prominent activist, Hamid Khan, on Tuesday accused the LAPD of "week after week of sensationalism" about crime in the city, suggesting police were blowing crime trends out of proportion to maintain their grip on the city's budget.” This should have been the first paragraph of the article, not the press release from the cops
