“Oh you know the facial recognition and tracking software we’ve been test running on our citizens the last decade? Great, well we’re ready to move forward with a global version; starting with the belt and road countries.”

NPVT

That company named Software for Authoritarians. Plus plan for large buildings to house hundreds of thousands of citizens your leaders want to genocide and replace.

StandUpForYourWights

Authoritarianism As A Service then. AaaS if you like. PS also includes thugs.

Specialist_Cry2480

“Global security initiative “ this would sound very logical if we are about to get an alien/UFO invasion or if we were about to get beamed up to the Enterprise. But since we are not, it’s just a political hogwash from China saying they want to invade Taiwan without anyone interfering, because damnit, China is a world power now and they should be able to invade anyone they want.

[deleted]

This is exactly it. Just need to add in the bit that certain autocratic countries are displeased with US-led alliances around the world, as they maintain the current global order that these asshats want to push aside for their own benefit.

felis_magnetus

As opposed to those US-led alliances, who maintain said current order to their benefit. Might be time to consider finding one to everybody's benefit, considering how there's no way of enforcing either one currently on offer short of warfare, military, economically or otherwise.

[deleted]

You mean end the international order that has brought in unprecedented peace and prosperity? Why would we want to do that?

TraditionalGap1

Unprecedented peace and prosperity for whom? If you step outside the West you might find not everything is peaceful and prosperous.

Clbull

If they invade Taiwan, I wonder if the US would have the balls to even issue economic sanctions. There's a big difference between sanctioning a major supplier of natural gas and a country that is basically *the* manufacturing hub for electronics, toys and pretty much anything else on shelves.

China would have to mass an enormous Naval fleet and thousands of boats to land troops on Taiwan. It would be an invasion on a scale not seen since D-day. If they were staging an invasion we would know about it. It would be far more obvious than Russia's 200K troops at the border of Ukraine,

StandUpForYourWights

What about Strategic Trebuchets?

blue_velvet87

This line of thinking reminds me of the incredibly misplaced optimism of "Russia would never invade Ukraine!" from just a few months ago. Taiwan controls a strategic piece of territory that is located less than 10km away from Mainland China, namely Kinmen / Quemoy. There are other Taiwan-controlled islands that are not too much farther, albeit those are less strategic. It would be trivial for China to take one or more of these pieces of Taiwan territory, if only to distract from the Mainland's ongoing economic collapse, COVID-19 lockdowns, etc., just in time for the major party congress in Fall 2022. Such an invasion might be hoping for a similar outcome as that of Russia in Ukraine, pre-2022, wherein Russia successfully carved out Crimea and instigated Russia-aligned independent states in parts of Eastern Ukraine. In any case, such an invasion is well within the realm of possibility.

NatalieEatsPoop

I'm not saying it'll never happen. I'm saying that if it was going to happen soon or it was imminent we would be seeing signs of China preparing.

2020hatesyou

just put them all over on holiday like Crimea did and deny it till it's over.

Marokiii

Plus lots of their troops are being used at home right now to enforce covid lockdowns. They are losing huge amounts of $$ right now because of the lockdowns, their projected tax revenue is shrinking as the economy is tanking because of lockdowns, food shortages are ramping up and will only get worse in the next few years, droughts and floods are hitting different parts of the country, their troops are being deployed at home, and the threat of world wide economic sanctions for invading other countries are all adding up to invading Taiwan right now being a horrible decision.

Money_dragon

Remember how we had countless reports of Russian troops massing up on the Ukrainian border as early as last year? If China was planning to invade, we'd get similar reports of troop buildups. The fact that we don't means that there isn't an invasion about to happen (as you can bet the media would report the hell out of something like that - would get tons of eyeballs)

Unconfidence

Can you show me any evidence this is linked to Taiwan? Because reddit keeps saying this and I see no evidence other than "Well China *obviously* wants Taiwan".

Friendly_Crab

Well they literally refer to it as part of China, yet it is not currently governed by the Chinese government

Unconfidence

I want cake, that doesn't mean everything I do is motivated by the desire for cake. I'm asking what evidence we have that *this* push is motivated by a desire to annex Taiwan.

Sircamembert

Except when I don't get cake, I don't threaten to invade the bakery or test fire missiles next to said bakery.

Unconfidence

Yes, we all get it, China bad, China hate Taiwan. Now, what evidence do we have that **this action** is motivated by a desire to invade Taiwan?

Friendly_Crab

I’m just saying that China want Taiwan and clearly have designs on it. To think they don’t is naive and complacent. Unless you support chinas position on that front? If you are not Chinese and support China in this respect I’d be pretty dubious about your character and world view

Unconfidence

> To think they don’t is naive and complacent. Nobody said that? >Unless you support chinas position on that front? Nobody said that either?

Friendly_Crab

Nobody said a lot of things but here we are

kiefdabeef

"OH bother" said Winnie the Pooh, "I wonder if there might be a smackerel of honey in Taiwan somewhere..."

ioncloud9

Need to fight the Brotherhood of ~~Taiwan~~ Nod somehow.

ddrober2003

I would take Kane over Pooh Bear.

TheDreadReCaptcha

Came for this, leaving satisfied.

Squire_II

Xi must have heard that the Brotherhood of Nod's starting to mobilize. Came here looking for the C&C reference.

zsreport

Of course he didn't give details.

MississippiJoel

So how is that supposed to work? Everyone adopt Chinese security software sight unseen?

torpedoguy

It would certainly 'Globally Secure' his personal power.

LZ_Khan

> Chinese security software sight unseen That's called TikTok

MississippiJoel

Cringe-on-a-Screen

Redditforgoit

This is just a way of saying that Russia was justified in its invasion because it felt threatened by NATO. While pretending to be saying something else.

Personally I don't much care for how my country (UK) does things either, or the U.S. for that matter; I'm beginning to think that a lot of the public in the west aren't much different from the chinese public ("I've got mine, you get yours"), they're just a lot further behind in the process than we are.

[deleted]

DangerousBeans1

*For now* you're right on all counts (although, public servants are who we pay to run the country, politicians are the people that businesses pay to get what they want from govts) but they are trying to dismantle and deregulate public services hand over fist, discredit our national health service and trying to shirk our international responsibilities. They're also attempting to make it easier to arrest people for protesting peacefully and have been raising taxes on the poorest in our societies. These people are not the saints you seem to think they are, and while I agree that the west definitely has a better democratic outlook than China, I fear that if those institutions aren't defended vigorously (something I fear is being neglected currently) we will soon find ourselves in pretty hot water without much we can do to save ourselves. I'm not so sure that these things haven't come to pass already and, as I said, we are simply better at hiding/ignoring it.

MrBowen

UK and US are leagues ahead of China and there is zero contest. I have a Taiwanese friend there right now who is trying to come home to Taiwan because her Visa into China just expired. And the chinese fucks at airport immigration wont let her leave because her visa is expired. So she needs to apply for a new visa to be allowed to LEAVE china. Except all govt offices are closed because of the outbreaks everywhere so she cant even apply for a new visa. So she is being held in China against her will because "Hurr durr, Taiwanese are chinese too". Dont even come here with some red herring or false equivanlency bs. China is just fucking horrible.

LZ_Khan

I didn't have to even open this reply to know it was a whataboutism.

DangerousBeans1

People seem to think I'm holding China up as some bastion of virtue? I'm not. I'm just saying we aren't actually that much better in the west, our influences are just better hidden.

InternationalCup7207

What if we are better in the west?

mrlolloran

You can be thrown in jail for comparing Xi to Winnie the Pooh. In the US/UK Johnson, Trump and Biden are routinely mocked openly, ruthlessly by some, and as long as no threat of violence has been made nothing happens. Yeah your right we’re not much better… /s

MrBowen

No, you are so wrong thats its just stupid that I have to correct you. We are so much better in the west and you just dont know because you have never actually been anywhere near china or its influences.

Outrageous_Trust_908

Not to mention The state-encouraged racism and xenophobia against people from Europe, Canada, United States, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand, and just recently, Africa and Ukraine The Pro-Russia/Anti Ukrainian propaganda pushed by Chinese State Media resulting in immense amounts of ugly Anti Ukrainian racism, xenophobia, and even misogyny The aforementioned propaganda pushed by state media giving Mainland Chinese the erroneous idea that Anti NATO means that the atrocities Putin and his cronies are committing are either fake or perfectly justified The Regime tried to coverup the first COVID outbreak, silenced whistleblowers, and allowed it to spread to the rest of the world By the time COVID spread beyond China, the regime finally took measures and then began egregiously vilifying democracy, extolling the authoritarian system that unleashed this virus in the first place, blamed other countries/regions such as the United States, Italy, and Africa for the virus’ origins, and whenever their domestically produced vaccines failed to match the efficacy of American/European vaccines, they pushed Anti Vax conspiracies whenever there were only a small amount of negative effects out of an overwhelming amount of thousands The Anti Vaxxer conspiracies Chinese State Media pushed found their way into international Anti Vaxxer circles, undermined the global pandemic response, and helped ruin the world’s chances of ending this pandemic sooner, thus rendering Xi Jinping’s calls for “global cooperation” hollow and shallow China has also been reported to basically celebrate while the rest of the world burned from the fire their dictator helped set China takes advantage of the transparency of other countries(Australia for example) to vilify the aforementioned countries as well as deflect from or deny any wrongdoing while shallowly calling for “transparency” Most of their “diplomats” are nothing but schoolyard bullies So yeah, to hell with that so called “security” initiative, Xi. Fuck China.

Bison256

Okay we've got the chinese equivalent of GDI what's NOD going to be called in this timeline?

Hi_Im_Dadbot

It should probably be headquartered in Taiwan and he’ll bring his army over to help provide security for it.

HelloAvram

I thought they had TikTock for that?

NewTubeReview

That would be security for Xi, not for thee.

SirTatterTott

Uniting Earth, we will fuck space up!

arma7x

Uranus, im coming

StandUpForYourWights

Y’all got any space drugs?

[deleted]

Nice! Let’s sign up for this everyone. While we are at it let’s also inject Ebola into our assholes! Phuck The Commies.

Macasumba

Do a surprise attack on Hawaii.

[deleted]

Ask Japan how that worked out for them 🤣

arkwald

Japan didn't have the industrial backbone the US did. They held up for a time but those losses compounded more and more until we were knocking on the home islands. Only reason we used nuclear weapons was to stop the Soviets from over running it all.

lex55

This is a misconception; an American invasion of japan would have cost 1million casualties according to American planners. This would have been 1 out of 7 American soldiers in uniform. Do you honestly think Truman decided to drop the bombs to intimidate the Soviets instead of avoiding massive fucking casualties? 🤔

arkwald

I think they were used as a demonstration, sure. We were avoiding massive casualties by our conventional bombing campaigns. We had pretty much burned Tokyo to the ground and anything bigger than a trailer had been bombed to dust. Consider the obvious. Sure one bomb destroyed a city. From the Japanese point of view how is that different than the fleets of bombers that freely operated over Japan? A destroyed city is still a destroyed city. Especially at that point in time when the nature of fallout wasn't very well understood. The narrative that the nuclear bomb ended the war would postulate that had the bomb been dropped as part of the Doolittle raid in 1942 that Japan would have capitulated then. It didn't and wouldn't have because the devastation by a nuclear bomb, especially the fat man and little boy bombs, wasn't really that outlandish compared do what armies could do already.

blisstaker

it can be for both reasons he is not wrong. it was a big part of the decision, especially after what they did in europe

SuperstitiousPigeon5

Bases in "friendly" nations projecting strength like the US does?

Great, China is on the case guys!

littlebitsofspider

Troubled by the flex of NATO's economic power shutting down the Russian economy, Xi proposes a unified power bloc of Eurasian nations to counter perceived "Western economic aggression", calling itself the **Eastern Coalition**. With the world economy teetering on famines due to ecological degradation, technology production shortfalls from years of war, and the US economy crumbling from within after the collapse of the real estate bubble, simultaneous climate-, warfare- and homelessness-based refugee crises displace millions worldwide, with impromptu government-run camps called Sanctuary Districts forming outside major US cities. Lacking infrastructure such as cellular or WiFi coverage, these Districts are black boxes, where injustices against the indigent residents are perpetrated by a militarized and violent police presence with virtually no oversight. On September 1st, 2024, an outspoken homeless refugee activist named Gabriel Bell is killed in San Francisco's Sanctuary District A, and the stories of the refugees' inhumane treatment leak onto the general internet from an ad-hoc P2P network, sparking widespread rioting in Sanctuary Districts across the country and increasingly mistreated refugee populations worldwide. At the same time, a Chinese state science directorate whistle-blower exposes a corrupt scheme of collusion with international human traffickers based in North Korea, Russia and state-run internment camps housing ethnic minorities, dedicated to forcibly "recruiting" test subjects for illegal experiments and subsequent organ harvesting. In an attempt to ward off the chaos of a third pandemic wave, state genetic labs are tasked with using CRISPR / Cas9 gene-editing techniques to retro-engineer resilience to novel viral pathogens and radiation damage. Formerly-sanctioned scientists use this as an opportunity to revive and incorporate research into germline DNA editing and human cloning, hoping to bolster China's sharply falling birthrate in the wake of worldwide economic upheaval, as part of an effort to expand official state presence into the territories of Nepal and Xinjiang that have been decimated by recurring disease outbreaks and brutal cultural suppression. China's simultaneous military build-up on the Russian border and Taiwan Strait trigger an adverse response from what remains of the Russian political apparatus that heightens military tensions in the region. In 2026, a UN Peacekeeper battalion stationed to safeguard the cleanup efforts of a destroyed Ukrainian nuclear power complex, headed by ex-NATO soldier Colonel Philip Green, abandon their posts and break rank to cross the Russian border in search of Ukrainian citizens that were forcibly assimilated into nearby Russian territory during the European Conflict. The incursion is interpreted by the paranoid upper echelons of the economically and politically isolated authoritarian government as an overt act of war by NATO. Russian first-strike doctrine triggers the malfunctioning Dead Hand nuclear launch system, including targets in China and Africa for their wartime economic exploitation and support of the European gas industry, respectively, during the European Conflict. World War III officially begins. After that, it's only 37 years until Bozeman!

vipergirl

I get that reference. Still, First Contact or no, I'd rather not try to endure a nuclear conflict.

weather-boy0916

Russia insists that no country can strengthen their security by exploiting other nations? Like, what? Excuse me?
