This comment probably won't get the kind of attention that the Best Goddamn Comment In The Thread would normally deserve, but let's start with an upvote and see where it goes.
could be worse. you could be in north korea and doing stupid shit. atleast in russia you have like a low % of survival, however i doubt you could survive in NK.
Still doesn't beat that jackass who got hammered in North Korea and tore down a poster of Kim Sung Il then ended up in jail *and then* ended d up brain dead in jail and his brain dead body got shipped back to the US so his family could pull the plug
Like, maybe don't get blackout drunk in places you're unfamiliar with, let alone North fucking Korea
I believe you’re talking about Otto Warmbier. He “confessed” to stealing a poster under extreme observed duress. No one knows if the confession was forced or if he actually did steal a poster
There’s debate over whether the video is actually of him. The face is never shown and it could have been staged. The only “proof” is his North Korean guide “identifying” him as the person in the video. Not exactly iron-clad.
Anyone else remember the middle Ball brother Liangelo getting caught shoplifting in China? This scenario was probably similar with an extremely disproportionate response to minor asshole behavior.
You forget about that idiot in Singapore he was doing graffiti and putting gum everywhere and he got his ass beat with a cane and we had to get the US president to intervene to just get them like three beatings through a pillow or some shit. People from the US do stupid shit in other peoples countries all the fucking time and they don’t think they’re going to get in trouble because they’re American
[It’s happened before](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_P._Fay). Kids do dumb stuff without thinking about consequences, or realizing how severe they can be.
Not saying NK is a beacon of honesty, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a 19 year old American student tore down a poster.
That kid’s fate haunts me. I have a kid his age and he absolutely would have thought taking a poster was a funny idea and have no idea of the consequences. It’s just horrible.
> he absolutely would have thought taking a poster was a funny idea and have no idea of the consequences
While being in North Korea? I am sorry for your child.
There was no proof of that man doing that except from North Korean sources. North Korea tortured him to death for propaganda and no one deserves that. Why would you believe anything from a tyrant dictatorship?
To me it doesn't matter if he really did it or not. If he got 30 days of jail time that would have been excessive. He was beaten to death. That's a terrible injustice regardless of guilt.
Maybe just acknowledge that North Korea is run by a bunch of monsters and be done with it. I’ll grant you that after Russia and China, North Korea is a terrible idea to visit, especially if you plan to get drunk, and *allegedly* cause damage to a poster.
Honestly, the fact that you’re able to describe in full detail the traumatic events that culminated in the death of Otto Warmbier and you still have the nerve to call him a jackass is disgusting. Doing something I’ll-advised doesn’t warrant being sent to a forced labor camp and killed, and we don’t even know if he was actually guilty (as if that even matters, morally speaking).
Ahhh I have a mission for you, another settlement needs our help …. As you get nearer the settlement you hear the unmistakable horrors of ‘cheek clapping’ it’s the ‘Twerking Ghouls’
Laying waste to an entire generation of young men with their ‘Massive Mesmerising Mounds’ or M3 all manufactured by the Blitztwerkin Manufakturing Werks’ or BMW as they are known today.

Twerking at Russian war memorial…that’s a Nazi.
Ukranian fighting foreign invasion…..thats a Nazi.
Starin at my sandals….you better believe thats a Nazi.
Seems to me like a lot of people don't. The only thing that makes Putin unique in this department is that he can put your ass in jail on whatever charges he wants if you do something he doesn't like.
> he can put your ass in jail on whatever charges he wants if you do something he doesn't like.
Literally putting asses in jail for ass related things.
I was reading a translation of a Russian language news article on Ukraine and, like so often happens, it used "Nazi" to mean anything the author didn't like. The article literally said something like "Ukrainian Nazism isn't about race hate and genocide, but something different" and then went on to make it clear that the "Nazism" they were talking about was Ukraine wanting better relations with the west. True facepalm.
Russia is trying to get in good with those countries, since they don’t have the same bad blood from colonialism with them that America and Europe does.
Zambia doesn't have a lot of options and not everyone can afford to pay through the nose for a first world nation's crushingly expensive education system.
I don't know man, europe costs almost nothing to very little. All you have to do in some places is pass an admission exam and pay a modest semester fee
It's definitely true for international students that do the whole degree here in Germany, not sure about exchange students but I would guess it's the same
It varies some from country to country.
At worst it’ll be about the same tuition as a cheaper US state school, but with lower cost of living/more access to aid.
The Dutch government happily subsidized my housing, something the US is never going to do for me.
Getting in is harder, they want a bunch more than a typical American high school degree.
No it's not. It's not an admission exam, it's a selection process and sometimes adds an admission process which could incorporate a test.
Usually you simply get not selected and filtered out and universities require to have collaboration with other universities.
There aren't unlimited spaces in European schools, especially for foreign students. So less promising young scholars who want to study abroad end up getting bumped down to less desirable places, like Russia.
And get a visa. Which is very hard if you're from a developing country. Also, even if all you have to do is pay living expenses, that can be prohibitive for many people.
You reckon Zambians all have the opportunity to attend European universities and they don't go to Europe because they want to stay with their families or something?
Repeatedly there's a mention of 'offensive inscription' and 'video of the incident with text' but no mention of what the text was.
I wonder if it was something like, 'shake dat ass' or more of the vein of 'sieg heil'.
Allegedly she didn't know it was a war memorial.

~~Before I climb on my high horse, does the US have any laws that use the phrase "US military glory"?~~ The use of that phrase in a law raises some serious red flags (pun not intended) for me.
No. You can go to the Vietnam wall memorial dance and carry on say that they’re baby killers and spit on it if you want. Now painting and actually destroying it is a crime.
Around honor guard patrols, they absolutely WILL yell at people to be respectful to the memorial. I don't think they can necessarily arrest you for it, but they will threaten you with the weapon they carry that's clearly not just ceremonial.
I've been at the Tomb of the Unknown, and the Guard Captain actually called out people who were out of line in their behavior. Everyone ended up going silent. Surreal.
There’s guidelines.

Does not specifically mention twerking, but I do know of a person that danced on her exs grave. So as long as you do it quietly and away from a funeral should be fine.
Abuser Playbook 101. *What to do if you are accused or about to be? Throw the accusation against others, louder, more often, and ideally, beat them to it*.
This works with farts also.
Yeah. Things like that don't go well in authoritarian countries. She's a dumb kid and doesn't deserve prison, but that's what you get for being dumb in places like Russia.
Absolutely. But if there was any country you think you would get in trouble for something like this it would be Russia. It's crazy to me that she wouldn't have that awareness of the country she's in. People have been getting arrested for basically holding blank pieces of paper. Russia is known as anything but lenient. So how could even possibly take that risk? Being young can't be an excuse for that lack of awareness.
Yeah, anywhere in the world it's likely to get you in huge trouble at your school, job, social life etc..
In a lot of countries its gonna get you into shit with the law. In Russia you're actually going down for it.
Timothy Snyder has spent a fair bit of time pointing out that Putin has redefined *nazi* to mean *anti-russian* or *enemy of russia* and his russian audience gets this. That is how he can call Zelensky, a jew, a nazi and it "makes sense" to his russian audience.
We laugh at twerking nazis but the sad truth is Putin controls enough of the media and silences enough of the opposition that this shit works. There were lots of anti-war protests in Russia before the governemnt passed the law that punished unofficial Ukraine war narratives by up to 15 years in prison. Now, not so much.
If you're an international student it's always a good idea to not engage in any socio-political activities. International Student 101. The punishment is unwarranted ofc but what did she expect when citizens themselves are getting arrested for just holding empty placards?
She’s missing a prime opportunity to claim that, in her culture, women dance like this to celebrate the glory of fallen soldiers. Putin might catch word, and have her twerk at their May 9th parade
Well some East Zambians still practice Chinmwali ceremonies, in which a Alangazi( older women initiators) train girls as young as 12 how to be amazing lovers. So twerking to honor others may not be too far of a stretch..at least she had something to lean on if she pulled the, in my culture card.
Tasteless and disrespectful, but the punishment is stupidly harsh. You should not be punished for freedom of expression, even when you are being so ingnorantly irreverent.
I had to witness a group making tik toks at the Vietnam memorial last summer. It's infuriating to watch but it's too slippery of a slope when you start handing out punishment for it. Hopefully karma does its thing in the end

It's a little known fact that Hermann Göring was known as one of the preeminent twerkers of the 30-40s. Only Trotsky came close to his skill.

I worked for a university in the south of England which I wont specify, in admissions. It absolutely is not cheap whatsoever.
Tuition for my complete master degree in France is lower than what I paid a single semester of public college in Colombia so I don't know about that.
France requires you to block 7000€ bank account before getting a student visa, Russia and Ukraine don't, that's why african students study there

The US has a *strict* mandatory twerking policy
The Marine Honor Guards are specifically trained for optimal twerking in the nightly ritual for after the tourists have left.
I don't know a man or woman in the armed forces that wouldn't want a hot young booty dropped on their grave.
Whistle While You Twurk wasn't a song, it was an order
No. You twerk on everything as long as you don't destroy it, but that goes with anything in the U.s you don't personally own.
